I just found out that this bassline was played by Mike Watson. I first thought that it was played by Rutger Gunnarsson (who is a huge influence for me as a bass player myself) because of the slides. A nice bassline tho, especially those "staccato-fills".
Greetings from Germany and keep the ABBA-songs coming, I love the bass work on them.
Where did you see that? Wikipedia did not specify who actually played on this track. To be honest, I find it hard to tell the difference between Mike Watson's and Rutger Gunnarsson's bass-lines sometimes. Thanks and take care.
On the first recording of the song Rutger was on bass, but after Benny had added the synthesizer staccato the bass was re-recorded by Mike on March 27, 1979.
Sorry to hear about your neighbor. The world needs more like him. A true treasure. Bless you for helping him out through the years.
Thank you. John was a good man and a WWII veteran... a man from another time and it was a blessing to have him as our neighbor for so many years.
Very nice cover Troy. Very detailed and busy, as usual with ABBA. Thank you ;-)
I never really was that big of an ABBA fan till I got on your channel. I was maybe 5 or 7 when they were big in the 70’s and loved the music then but as with growing up you taste in music changes which mine went to Kiss , Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath then my top favorite RUSH and IRON MAIDEN but after subscribing to your channel I have been blown away by how some of these pop bands of certain eras had some of the most amazing and mind blowing bass lines. I have a new appreciation for these bands now looking past the stereotype bs. Thanks for opening an old dogs mind and you just proved you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. ✌🏻my brother and teacher
I'm glad I had some part in bringing you around. Sounds like we had very similar influences.
First off...in keeping with the the theme of Mother, I'm hoping your Mom is doing better these days Troy! You mentioned previously that she was "experiencing difficulties". I loved meeting your Mom last year on the video you posted of you two having a chat! Sending Positive Vibes towards you all especially during your Nor' Easter that seems to have blanketed much of the East Coast today. I'm sending condolences too in regards to your friend John and his passing. I have no doubt he LOVED being taken care of by you, your Bride Lynn and her brother as well. Death affects everyone differently. My way of dealing with the grieving part is to be Thankful to have Shared The Air with them and memories help as well. Cheers From Ohio and Stay Strong!
Yes, Mom is ok, but her overall quality of life is not terribly good. She rarely gets out of the house and has few visitors. If it were not for Covid, we'd definitely be doing more with her, but she's got to be extremely careful due to her underlying medical conditions. We didn't do too bad, with 5" or so. And the snow was nice and light. It was strange how he went. We were actually expecting him to return home and the next think we knew, he'd passed. As I mentioned, he had stomach cancer and kept it to himself, so he went out on his own terms. His daughter only found out after his death. Thanks and take care.
Always Loved Benny and Bjorn for the amazing bass lines they created in their music. Epic. You play everything so effortlessly. You're truly a master, well done ;)
Bloody marvellous! Well done that man.
@@TJH3113 Have I? Must have been some time ago I reckon. Its a picture of my left hand. I was born pretty much without one, I'm guessing it was Thalidomide but we can't be sure.
Anyway, if I may. Here's a video of ME playing. . . The track is called "Jabba The Hutt." Its an original instrumental I wrote sometime ago. The musicians on here are all from the Internet. UK and USA alike. None of us have ever met but I was very pleased with how it turned out.
We all keep in touch on Facebook. Hope you like it.

This is a great underrated ABBA song.... probably because it wasn't sung by one of the girls, but one of the few 'guitar riff' driven ABBA songs... as far as ABBA bass lines goes this sounds like it's one of the slightly easier ones to play? It's a great song and a great bass cover of it - I think I might learn it myself - great playing
It was a lot of fun to play and was, in some ways, easier than some of the more sophisticatedly arranged songs, but it had its own moments that had me struggling.
I remember that song. Nice job!
I barely remembered it when I was searching through their catalog for something to learn. Thanks!
Very nice job!! As you know I'm a huge fan of all your covers. For your next ABBA Cover, PLEASE consider and give it a listen to "If It Wasn't For The Nights". One of the best, and most underrated, ABBA song. The bass is so funky and cool!
Always cool bass line on ABBA! Nice playing ! cheers frm Quebec city :)
I’m sorry about your friend, Troy. I hope his family irons out the wrinkles and sanity covers you again.
You’re the best, my friend. You are absolutely the best. Thank you.
Thanks Tommy. John was a great man and lived a wonderful life. There's not much to be sorry about.
Cracking bass line Troy, 👌 one of my favourite ABBA songs along with Voulez Voux ..
Sorry to hear about your neighbour ..
Wow so fluid and your staccato is flawless!! Such a fun song.
@@TJH3113 Lol!! I love the song but it always sounded more like a Cheap Trick song to me.
@@EnergyAndLightAwakening I could definitely hear a little Cheap Trick in there.
ABBA! Thanks Troy - great cover as always. Condolences for your neighbour's passing.
Holy cow what a crazy active bass line! Really awesome cover though and that tone is awesome!
Sorry to hear you're having neighbor troubles and it was good to hear that you took care of that elderly gentleman for so long. I have elderly neighbors on either side of me. There's not a lot I can do for them other than clear the snow from their driveways and sidewalks. I have a small snow thrower so it doesn't take a tremendous amount of time or effort, but they appreciate it.
Thanks!
It's not so terrible. It's just a bit jarring, going from 17 years of peace and tranquility, to a bit of chaos. I'm sure it will level off. There were times I was cursing the world out there at 3:00 in the morning clearing the driveways before going to work. I'd do ours, our neighbor's, and Lynn's brother's around the corner. That Ariens we bought when we first moved into the house has never let me down and, as much as I hate to admit it, I've never changed the oil or had it serviced. I think that, after a certain point, if something has been neglected and is still working that you are better off just letting things be.
@@TJH3113 I had a big 5HP 2 stage Ariens when I lived in WI. When you get snow by the foot, and sometimes for days in a row, you need a machine that does most of the work! The single stage snow thrower I have now is good enough for Pittsburgh 😅
Happy New Year Troy!!! I hope your wife and you are coping OK with these winter storms hitting you.❄️☃️🌨
I just read the description and feel like I know you a little. I think you'd be a great neighbor.
Very nice of you to say, but you might think differently if you heard me cursing at the top of my lungs at 3:00 in your driveway.
@@TJH3113 Seems valid but considering myself a good neighbor I dint see that happening.
You are an amazing bass player that has helped me learn how to play the bass more proficient. Thanks brother. Peace.
Thanks so much for the very kind words, Timothy. I greatly appreciate them. Take care!
Great song chance man. Such a fun song and a great bass line. Man this guy came up with some awesome bass lines. Well played too Troy as always.
Dang! This bass-line is a bit involved, isn't it? Gotta love it! Well done, Troy!
It's been a long time since I listened to that with such pleasure. Thank you. I listened to Jethro Tull's "Inside" and thought the bass line interesting and pretty cool . I wondered if you had heard it. But the clincher in the lyrics was mention of coffee! So I guess the song is yours. All the best!
I'm glad to hear that Geoff. I'm not familiar with that Tull song, but will try to check it out. Take care!
Nice tone in this bass nailed it as always! Can't figure out what bassguitar it is👌🏻
Thanks a lot. It’s a Spector Pulse. I will usually make a note of what I’m playing in the text area beneath the video.
I wasn’t a fan of that finish in photos, but it looks nice in this video. What is your opinion of it? Always wanted a Spector, but being a lefty my options are limited, but it is available in this finish as a lefty.
The finish would not have been my first choice either, but it does come in Grey as well. I think it's a great bass. I do a bit of a review of it in my "That's Really Super, Supergirl" video, if you are interested.
When you're not recording for videos do you ever use an amp and monitors/stereo speakers? I've tried for years to use headphones/mixer and could never find a way that was not distracting. And sorry about your friend.
Actually, since I started recording more directly, I have not really used an amp or my computer speakers to play through and rely entirely on my headphones. Thank you.
All of these ABBA covers are really coming in handy right about now! I'm playing bass in the band for my school's Momma Mia musical and I have to learn all the songs by next week, and I'm not the greatest at reading some of the charts. Thank you as always for the excellent covers!
Awesome! So many great songs. Don't get too hung up on the details... just hit those money notes! Thanks! Take care and good luck!
Nice! What do you use for your transmitter to your wireless headphones?
Thanks Matt. These headphones are actually wired. I'm not sure how a wireless model would work with my setup (just about all of the newer model Bose headphones are wireless), so I actually bought another set of these off of eBay, just in case
Troy, I'd like to recommend Iron Maiden's Prodigal Son. It's an excellent bass line, and not the typical excessively quick songs from Steve.
My brain?! I thought your mom was going to play bass. "Does your mother know bass cover?"
Did you review this Bass? I would like to hear what the bridge pick-up soloed sounds like....
I have not reviewed it as part of my "collection" videos, but I did something on it on an XTC video not too very long ago. This was before I had the modifications done on it. I should say that it does not feature either p/u soloed, because I never do that.
Question regarding your right hand technique or rather the way you raise your right arm so high .. I have noticed on several videos that you play that certain way . Is it something you are used to or just a comfortable way of plucking the notes .. how high or low do you strap your bass ?
Your last question almost answered your first question. I believe my right arm position is my body's way of trying to maintaining the posture I would have if I were standing. I don't think my wrist likes much bend in it when I play, so, depending on the bass, my shoulder may be raised higher or lower. There are a few basses where I can almost rest my arm on it and keep my wrist pretty straight. I used to wear my bass fairly high. Thanks for the great question.
Troy, I've been watching your bass covers for a minute now, and I'm wondering if you have any tips for getting that pattern down cleanly where you alternate playing, say, an eighth note on the E string and then play the same note on the D string as two sixteenth notes. I'm not sure if I'm explaining it incredibly well, but you can sort of see what I mean by what you're playing at around 1:05. Thanks!
Hi Jay. It might be tough to explain here, but I am employing, what I refer to as "triplets". If you look in my "Bass Tutorials" playlist, I try to explain them in the first part of my YYZ tutorial. It's a little more difficult to employ that technique when playing octaves (as I'm doing in this song), but it's the same principle... you just need to jump over one string.
@@TJH3113 Thanks Troy, I'm not sure why I didn't catch on that they were triplets -- in hindsight its rather obvious. I practiced following your cover of Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, and I've gotten the technique down pretty comfortably. Thanks for the inspiration!
I’d never really appreciated how important the bass was in ABBA…there’s a lot going on!
I’ve never heard this song and I don’t listen to ABBA, to me this song’s chorus melody sounds like Your Mother Should by the Beatles and the bass sounds like it’s from some 1980s Japanese anime sci-fi film.
I had the pleasure of meeting the original bass player who played on that track. He was playing for The Abba Concert a tribute act out of Sweden. Very nice humble gentleman who was still playing his White Fender Jazz,(early 70's) he used on the track ! Great pop bass lines : ) Nice job !
It was probably Mike Watson then? Very cool! Thanks James!
Rutger Gunnarsson played bass on Volez vouz!
