Great video Alex! This appeared in my Steam featured list, and after your review I'm really tempted.
PS: I 100% agree with you about time constraints in games (I'm hating how it's done in Pathfinder Kingmaker, for instance), and I'm not really fond of these additional "challenges" (I tend to be a completionist and these can spoil a significant fraction of a game for me).

Additional challenges tend to be a (rather poor) excuse to extend the game's running time, but in games like Desperados 3 and Mahokenshi they actually add to the fun factor! (except those that involve time limits),

The visuals are really on point (excluding font), the UI reminds me of Shogun total war2, which is obviously a good thing. Shame I'm really not into card and deck mechanics. Still, mental note added if I ever run out of interesting games to try.

The game shot itself in the foot when it released. It had no ability to save midway through a mission. The Steam community were very critical of that. Eventually the developers managed to implement that feature but sadly I think most people, myself included, have moved on to other games. Perhaps in a sale I might reconsider.

@@YeOldEntertainment Yeah, Gloomhaven certainly does have that "exhausting to play for more than a couple hours at a time" thing (and the weak excuse for a story doesn't help in either case).

@@benl2140 Exactly. In those two respects (and the fact that you use card/card functions to even move through hexagons) they are the same.

I see one of the complaints is that there's no Saves available in the middle of missions. That's a tough one.

You can now, the DLC implemented that. But that would absolutely KILL the fun factor in my opinion. Anyway. You do have it now with the DLC (which also has a mission editor and lots of other goodies).

@@YeOldEntertainment Why would a quality of life feature such as being able to save when you need to turn off the computer be a killing fun factor? What's the difference between pausing the game and leaving the pc on overnight and then continuing the next day, compared to saving that pause... turning off the computer (saving electricity) and then restarting the game the next day. You do know that they implemented the save as a pause/save don't you? Not possible to save scum if that is what you are referring to by killing your fun factor.

    • @YeOldEntertainment

      @@greyroo
Yes , I know they implemented this feature. I specifically said so in the comment you are replying to.
I think the discussion about the lack of a saving whenever-you-want feature is not a quality-of-life issue in this particular case.
I think that this question  “What's the difference between pausing the game and leaving the pc on overnight and then continuing the next day, compared to saving that pause...” is coming from someone who has not played the game.
Missions in Mahokenshi are somewhere between 10ish minutes long in the earlier encounters to 25ish minutes long in later encounters. I think most people can spare 30 to 40 minutes per gaming session whenever they take the time to play a game. I don’t think “saving to continue the next day” is a likely scenario… I think “robbing myself of the consequences of my bad decisions” a.ka. save-scumming is far more likely reason to miss this feature.
In Mahokenshi, your decisions have mid-term implications and even long-term implications. There’s a big difference between half-assing a mission and completing it efficiently. Restoring a saved game to “correct your mistakes” robs you of dealing with the consequences of your bad or less-than-great past decisions. But “tactical course correction” is an important part of the game in Mahokenshi. I would even say it is what makes it exciting!
I was actually a bit shocked to discover (after I made the video) that not being able to save during encounters was a fairly popular criticism of the game. I myself never even thought of saving halfway through an encounter in Mahokenshi. To me, it would be like being able to save in Dark Souls before every fight so that you don't have to fight the bad guys you have already killed again. Yes, these games belong in completely different ballparks, but I think the reason for there not being a save-whenever-you-want feature in both of them is the same. While some people would like to have a save-whenever-you-want-feature in Dark Souls, I think the game's target audience wouldn't. Mahokenshi still has a 7+ score on Steam, and I think this is because the majority of people for whom this game is intended is o.k. with the way it is.

@@YeOldEntertainment You misrepresented what I said. I will reiterate. They implemented a pause/save system, not a system where you can save, play some more, and if it goes belly up revert to a previous save.
You are unable to RELOAD any save, you can only CONTINUE your progress or start all over. You CANNOT save scum. It affects the game in absolutely no way, except it allows the player flexibility to have a quick play and save their progress at any time.
I did have the game when it was released but refunded it as the missions did take me longer than 10 minutes to complete a mission (everyone plays games at their own pace). Anyway we disagree and there is nothing wrong with that. :)

Yeah, I've had it on my wishlist for a while now. The main problem and gripe I have with it though is that it's not on sale. And as currencies are imaginary in value and pulled out of someone's ass, 25$ is quite a lot for me. I'll leave Mahokenshi alone for a few more months and wait for summer sale or sth.
