I left Asmara in 1964 after being transferred from Kagnew Station to Germany. This presentation brings back so many great experiences in the city and the country. Many of the famous buildings and roads seem unchanged. As an 18yo I had so many false ideas what Asmara and Africa would be like. I was so surprised the moment I arrived how wrong I was. Asmara was a slice of Italy and Africa in a modern city. The people were incredibly friendly and helpful. I bought a motorcycle so I could tour the country and what I found was life changing from the local religions, customs, food and history. I traveled alone and never had any problems. I was approached multiple times and invited into peoples homes and offered hospitality. When my bike broke down once a truck driver stopped and helped me load my bike and took me to a local mechanic, then invited me to meet his family. The city was safe, clean and was an incredible fusion of Eritrean and Italian foods, architecture and customs. May Eritrea find its way to freedom and prosperity.
Unfortunately this how Eritrea at all treated her people those who lifted to find better life but when you get it you back to miss your home land to come as someone has not been in this land before everything changed even your family even your nigbhers your friends.. I left it at 2005 till now I'm living with hope to back and I'm sure it's not that place I left it but I have to back and live my childhood life alone
@I remember when the vote for independence took place in the 90’s that Eritrea would prosper and grow as it had many resources lacking in other newly independent countries. It is a shame that the government became a totalitarian state and deprived its people of a bright future. Governments come and go, but the people will be there and when the time comes for change, I pray they have a voice in their future. I can only look back to what I saw and felt at the time when I was 18yo. I hope you find your peace and place with the world.

I'm so glad I found this. My family lived there 2001-2002, and haven't been back since foreign residents were originally... invited to leave. Such a special place and such truly wonderful people. Deep love for Eritrea. I hope it works for me to be able to nostalgically visit some day. :)
The government need to spend money to renovate to those all old buildings in Massawa and let to foreign investors to bring back the economy as simple as that.
I just love Asmara. It is a very beautiful city with a really special charm. It exudes history in all of its city scapes. A beautiful blend of Eritrean culture and Italian colonial past. The Eritrean music in the background is so beautiful. I want to visit!!!
I flew into Asmara airport in August 1972 and left 16 months later in December 1973. The exterior of the airport looks the same but inside is totally different. I also noticed none of those big building were there when I was. The Fiat building is the same and I remember the old ROMA building. The part showing Asmara Downtown looked very familiar and I married a beautiful Italian girl in that church in November 1973 and walked down those steps with my new wife. I can also say that those big palm trees were somewhat smaller as well. The one thing I did notice as well is that when I was there 47 years ago not as many people were walking around in Jeans and Tennis shoes. I have no idea who the statue is of cause it was not there. I remember the bottle factory but I never visited there or the old Bus company. I drove the road to Massawa more times than I could count. I remember driving down at least 2 times a month or more through the clouds and making those crazy turns we called Switch Backs. I believe the old railroad was still running back in my days there but I never road on it. The old railroad bridge is in pretty bad shape and we never saw those big groups of Baboons either and the dry river bed is the same. It's sad to see what war and possibly corruption has done to this beautiful city but the Red Sea is still beautiful. There are a lot of new unoccupied apartment buildings and Emperor Halie Selassie's Palace was absolutely beautiful back then. I spent many full nights with my friends on those beautiful beaches. At 13:27 as you are crossing the bridge I can just start to see what we called the TTU building which was the US Military recreation center and spent many a weekend at that building and now it is called the Dahlak Hotel. I also noticed one huge difference from my time in Asmara and that is the traffic and amount of cars. I did notice that most of the drivers are still bad as they just pull out in front of anyone else. I thankyou so much for this great visit and wish you could visit the old US Military Post we called Kagnew Station up on the hill in Asmara. I loved my time there and I also wish to say how sorry I am if my Country did anything bad to your way of life.
Thank you for watching the video. Your great experience and memory of Eritrea are amazing. I am originally from Ethiopia, and this was my first trip to Eritrea. Thanks for the visit.. Was very enjoyable. The war scars still remain but in time will be erased. Eritreans are wonderful humans. They have amazing memories. We would go to the club on Kagnew and have 10 or more people and the waiters would take everyone's orders and never write them down. Then place each person's order at the proper place without making any mistakes. I was dumbfounded. Miss my Eritrean friends whom I met there during my 2 1/2 years and I was one of the last 5 Army personnel to leave. One of my friends walked from downtown Asmara all the way to the airport to see us off.. She was banging on the window at the airport because she wasn't allowed in. We looked around and she was waving and crying. Hurt my heart so bad. I'm still sad.

Fleischsalat und Grillbuletten!
Taking pride in a colonial project that suppressed its people and treated them like subhumans is nothing to be proud of.

Mr. Anjo sorry, that you don't like the video. I am not a professional videographer nor editor. The footage was captured by iPhone 11 pro max, and I tried my best to show the country's beauty. Maybe if you are a professional videographer or storyteller, let me know or point me out where I can see your work to learn more about it. Anyway, thank you for watching.
It was really stupid of Ethiopia allowing Asmara to separate

Ethiopia didnt allow them to separate tplf (which is an antiethiopian party which held pepower in Ethiopia through force f0r 30 years) did
Eritrea is in the same state Ethiopia left it at if not worse atleast Ethiopia even under 30 years of evil leaders ship and destructive system like federalism achieved huge progress and is considered one of the fastest growing nations on earth if Ethiopia could get a port aloje thats enough the rest of eritrea is a burden same goes for many regions of Ethiopia itself they leach of Ethiopia then talk like contributed to the country.
They didn't lol they were defeated.
It’s really stupid for you think that Ethiopia allowed Eritrea to be an independent country.
they fought for their liberty for more than 30yrs and they earned it.
