  • When you tell a story, especially when that story is about a real person or event, you’re in an incredible position of power -- to interpret that story and share it beyond yourself. Of course, with that power comes an immense responsibility, to both the subject of the story and the time and place you’re telling the story. In Sammi Cannold’s talk, she shares how her experience researching a new production of Evita and a conversation with Eva Perón’s nurse and confidant taught her to feel the weight of a storyteller’s responsibility. Sammi Cannold is a director who is one of Forbes Magazine's 30 Under 30 in Hollywood & Entertainment, class of 2019. This fall, she will be directing a new production of Evita at New York City Center and this winter, she will be directing Celine Song's Endlings Off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop after having helmed the world premiere at the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) and having developed the piece at Playwrights Realm and the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center. Other recent credits include Ragtime on Ellis Island and Violet on a moving bus at the A.R.T. Recent associate director credits include the Broadway production of Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 (dir. Rachel Chavkin). Sammi has also served as an Artistic Fellow at the A.R.T., a member of Cirque du Soleil's Creative Cognoscenti, and a Sundance Institute Fellow. She holds a B.A. from Stanford University ('15) and an M.A. from Harvard University ('16). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I saw this wonderful production on opening night. Her directorial decisions were thought-provoking, refreshing and much appreciated by my friends and me. Now that I’ve watched this TED talk I must see it again, thus I just bought tkts for this Saturday, and I’m bringing other friends along because this show shouldn’t be missed.

Thank you so much for this talk. Even as a child watching the film with Madonna I felt Eva’s assault by men and media as something world spread. Even as a child it was evident. It’s heartening and reassuring to hear Eva’s story earnestly and from the female perspective. Tone is everything.
    Thank you

Wonderful & insightful! Thank you so much for this, and your re-imagining of Evita. Wish we lived closer, so that we could see this show. I was a singer/dancer who was injured in a production of the musical, it has since held a piece of my heart.

I saw your production last week on the 21st,2019. It was phenomenal. The entire cast and production was astoundingly good. It made me admire EVITA even more and after watching this more still.

I really think the film version achieves the level is responsibility that ms.cannold is talking about. It's underrated for sure.

There's no actual evidence that Eva and Magaldi ever met. In the musical they meet again, but at that point Magaldi had been dead for six years. It's taken now as more likely that Eva went to Buenos Aires with her mother, who took her around the theatrical agents looking for work.

Thank you, Miss Cannold. You have really helped clense Evita's name from the unfortunate and misinterpreted version of book of hate by poorly-spirited Mary Main, in which the musical is inspired on. If you want some more material, please take a look at Jose Pablo Feinmann's script for 1996 "Eva Perón" Argentinean film (at the time of Evita, by Parker).

Cleanse??? The entire point of the musical is a political commentary on how ruthless extremist fascist dictators will inevitably fall regardless of the empty promises made by the living human piece of propaganda that was the fame hungry Evita Peron.

Great speech but very surprised she pays so little recognition to the impact of the film on the public perception and knowledge of Eva Peron.

How can you so grossly misunderstand the point of the piece as the literal director???

Funny that she doesn’t mention this entire production was a vanity project produced and financed by her parents.

She must be careful to always consider the text the most important thing: not real life or history.
