      They are a remarkable bunch in this Urban Worm Bag!! This may have been the annual accidental start to building a hot compost pile in one of my outdoor bins, especially with that air gap and obstruction I created with the fry holder!! I'll bring out the frozen water bottles if I see the temps going up! Thanks so much for all your support Joe!!🪱🪱🪱

    Seeing the results of a 30-day interval between feedings is so interesting. I somehow always end up coming back to my systems in far less time 👍🏻 If the plan is to return to this systems in only 15 days next time, then I wonder if there'll be leftovers still....

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  4 місяці тому +2

      That is a good question...what is the turning point for these worms, 15 days, 21 days? 30 days seems to be a castings bonanza but I'm probably losing some efficiency by not refeeding when they have just a little bit more food left. My goal is to get closer to a 10 day to two week interval with my outdoor bins to keep my eye on the temperatures and off gassing...We'll see if I can keep that up, but I'm no AV when it comes to methodical consistency of feedings!! I need to go back and watch your most recent spreadsheet video for motivation!! Thanks so much for dropping by to watch AV!!🪱🪱🪱

      Yep, I'm going for 15 days from now on 😂 Just gotta make sure life doesn't get in the way!! Funny you should mention the temp sensors...I just checked on it and I may have created a little hot compost in there with the air gaps above and below the dog dish looking cardboard I put in there! Great feeding Patrick! I like being able to put some larger bedding items in the bin like tp rolls and paper towel rolls to see how the worms and the bin break them down. I can’t remember if you said this before, do you know about how many gallons the Urban Worm Bag is?

    • @Vermicompost

      Thank you Rick!! The UWB is 32.32 gallons or 122 liters or 5.3 cubic feet at max capacity and I think I'm somewhere around 1/2 to 2/3rds loaded. It is definitely easier to load more stuff in my UWB than my 20 gallon fabric pot Outdoor Worm Bin which is usually maxed out at half full and normally running at the 1/4th to 1/3rd capacity level. My Outdoor Worm Bin used to be my "beast mode" worm bin, but this UWB far surpasses that!! I hope that helps!! Thanks so much for stopping by Rick!!🪱🪱🪱

    I’d love to know more about your mosquito dunks! I have fruit flies and/or gnats that I just can’t seem to get rid of in my very very small bin.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  4 місяці тому

      Check out this link to read more in depth what they are: amzn.to/42KDtM0 Here is a dunk version I use in my 55 gallon rain barrel: amzn.to/42Br4Kf Basically they are a biological way to control mosquitoes by preventing the larvae from developing into flying insects. The active biological agent is a bacteria that feeds on a certain stage of the mosquitoes life cycle...but it does the same thing for gnats and fruit flies. So bottom line, it is a long term solution to any gnat or fruit fly problem in your bins. In the short term, you'll want to take a vacuum cleaner and stick the attachment for cleaning corners in the bin to suck out all the adult flies each day for about a week. In the meantime any eggs or larvae that are in your bin will die or not be able to turn into flying insects. This prevents them from completing their life cycle and eliminates your problem. All you have to do is put a scoop full of granules in some water that you then spray onto the surface of your worm bins. Just continue to periodically mist them with this solution once a months or every couple weeks at first. One 20 pack of dunks is practically a lifetime supply for me. I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching Matthew!!🪱🪱🪱

    Are you still trying to build up worm population from giving you son worms 6 mos ago? Or did you take more out since then? I feel like your bag should already be at max worms unless you took a lot out recently.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  4 місяці тому

      That is a great point...what is the carrying capacity of a continuous flow bin whose volume is constantly changing??!? My son was the last benefactor of worms from my UWB, but since the volume is down from my last harvest, and some came out in the harvest, and it is summer time now, I think I can bring the volume up which may indicate to the worms that there is more space to multiply. Just a theory, but let me know what you think as I do more videos throughout the summer...do the hands full of castings look more dense with worms now versus later in the summer? That will be the ultimate test...because I can't contemplate counting them like I've done in my Tiny Worm Bin: ua-cam.com/video/uH3xPs9T5s0/v-deo.html so I'll never know for absolute certain! Thanks so much for watching and for your long time support of our channel!!🪱🪱🪱

    I put a whole pineapple 🍍 Top 5 days ago into my bin I didn't chop up the leaves I just buried it in the castings and cardboard. I'm curious how long it's going to take for them to break it down.
    I toss some mosquito bits into the bin every now and then. Very effective against gnats. Totally safe for worms.

    How do you make that spray for the nats?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  4 місяці тому +1

      I just put the mosquito dunks: amzn.to/42KDtM0 in my rain barrel to keep the mosquitos from reproducing, then use that same water in my spray bottle. I had one commenter mention that they just put some granules directly in their worm bins and it works. The bacteria that disrupts the life cycle of the mosquitos also does the same for gnats. So it doesn't kill gnats but prevents them from reproducing. It is a long term solution, so you may want to vacuum the gnats out in the short run. I hope that helps!! Thanks so much for watching Jeff!!🪱🪱🪱

    They really chowed down! My coffee grounds mold so fast! I just fed mine yesterday and lots of activity. Plus the pill bug population is up and they are major helping the worms out. And had small snail show up. I am really aging the harvested castings long term so those critters are gone. I did see some blue worms too. Their eggs survived the deep freeze last winter!

Pill bugs are the one critter I have never seen in my bins. I used to see them alot growing up in FL but I just don't see them down here much anymore. Sounds like you have lots of great castings!! 😂🤣😂 I had to do some sneaky editing because my head and the microphone kept popping into view! The top of the UWB comes up to my mid thigh so I really have to bend over and down for long periods of time when I'm filming...which is why my hands pop in and out so much, so I can take breaks. Believe it or not I think you might be at the right height for a UWB in your scooter. I could do the whole feeding sitting down in a chair...but it depends on the height of the material within. Even with an armpit sitting right on the side, I don't think you, nor I, could reach to the bottom. I've got a lot of suggestions, and I'm contemplating putting it on cinder blocks for easier filming and harvesting! I should keep more of Autumn's sighs and grumbling when I dump all these food scraps in...she's always telling me "that's enough!!" Hopefully the worms come up and eat right out of the cardboard dish I served it up in!! Thanks so much for watching Sandra!!🪱🪱🪱

I know I have a regular wheelchair that is the same height as a chair and I can't even reach the kitchen sink to turn it on! I got hold of Steve Churchill and asked him to discuss harvest options for people like me. He told me he would get back to me, but didn't. I understand he's busy and I represent a very, very small market segment. I've seen people run their UWB far deeper than yours is currently filled, so maybe that's an option for better accessibility? But my little bus bins- sorta like washing up bowls or that size ish, are perfect, can stack them in themsels or one forward one side wards then forwards etc for air flow.
      I also find they are easy to work on at a table, at a laptop table or a lap tray…. And I can get 6 for £10/$20 ish.
