Hello Jan! You can't boot 3.1 with a 3.1.4 ROM because the workbench.library and icon.library are missing in the 3.1.4 ROM. Version 3.1 expects this libraries to be in the boot ROM. Regards, Thomas
Wasn't aware of that when I got the 3.1.4 ROM. There's a workaround for it (making a 1MB KickROM) that I'm going to look into. Otherwise it's going to be incompatible with many older disks.
Good to know. My attempts of resurrecting an old 2000 (after fixing water damage) went exactly nowhere because of that. And i thought i did s-th wrong :/
@@JanBeta But it should be possible to extract the libraries from the 3.1 ROM and put them on the 3.1 Workbench drive. Or maybe try to copy the two libraries from 3.1.4. For me I have decided to stick with 3.1.4 and not use any software that does not work with that rom version. The old 3.1 makes problems in so many cases, like cf-card compatibility, big disks, IDE to Sata adapters do not work correctly and many more. All that is fixed with 3.1.4.
Can you just copy the workbench.library and icon.library Libs folder on the floppy's that boot in a workbench and so, so that you do not have that problem, i have also updated the ROM of my Amiga 500+ to 3.1.4 ROM?
I started with the commodore 64 in the early 80's and then upgraded to an Amiga 500. Got rid of all of it in the late 90's. I loved the commodore stuff and never understood while they weren't more popular. The 64 and ami500 was my youth. Lately, I have been watching this channel and adrian black's and decided to try and get the one machine I always wanted. The Amiga 2000. I just checked ebay and all I can say is WOW. I guess I waited too long. I should have picked up a c64 and Amiga a few years ago when they were sanely priced. It took 30 years but the Amiga is finally popular :-) and I wont/cant pay that much money for one. Looks like I am just another old c64/amiga user who will have to make do with a Raspberry Pi. love your vids, jan.
I love this comment! I remember my first i386 computer (upgrade from my 8088 computer around 1986 or 1987) and the "massive" 120mb hard drive UPGRADE that I got when I bought it. 80MB was standard. I swear at the time I thought that that 120mb drive would last forever... That was even running original windows too. Now we download that fast. :-) Hey, thanks for making me smile today! Buddy
The Workbench library and the icon library no longer reside on the Kickstart ROMs, that's why it didn't work. In fact Workbench 3.1.4 copies them on the HDD/Flash during the installation process. That doesn't happen with 3.1, which takes for granted those libraries are in ROM. A quick solution would be copying your 3.1.4 installation from the HDD to the Compact Flash, and there you have it! ;-)
That'll make a lot of older disks incompatible. I wasn't aware of that when I got the 3.1.4 ROM. :/ There are workarounds I think, I'm going to look into that. More Amiga fiddling ahead! :)
@@JanBeta I have got through any incompatibility so far. Also 3.1.4 can handle everything from the older to the newest stuff. If you really want to stick to older Amiga OSs, then just copy those two libraries (from aminet) over to the Hard Drive and add a couple of assign to the startup-sequence.
Great work Jan! Love to see you working on the Amigas! Might get a Buddha IDE interface at some point! Been playing around with various RAM cards and accelerators, it seems that the Zorro stuff can be hit and miss regards compatibility. The extra RAM you have in there - what board are you using for that?
Yes, Memory Master 1.1, shown it a bit more up close in the last Amiga video. I ordered some more RAM ICs for it as well, to get to the full 8MB (I miscounted how many I needed last time and only got it to 6MB, d'oh!). Also just watching your new A2000 video while answering comments. (I probably should pay more attention to the video though... ;))
its worth updating the firmware of the card from the icomp website, helps with larger hard drives :) doh, just seen you did that! lol if you want to make the empty hard drive icon match the workbench one do this: copy dh0: disk.info dh1: disk.info then reboot.
Haha, yes, albeit I only updated when I wanted to get the CF card working (which didn't work at all previously). I'll definitely do some more cosmetics at some point. Glad I got the large partition working at all now. :)
All the channels I watch are sponsored by PCB way now! Awesome work guys keep people like Jan doing what they love so we can all learn from it and enjoy the journey too!
Yes, they are very generous and do a lot of sponsorships even for us smaller channels and tinkerers. (Plus, I'd recommend them even if they didn't pay me for it.)
PCBway is awesome. (if they want to sponsor me too i will gladly show it!) the only problem with that is the large block size will make it so any small amiga file will use the max block size, even if its 4k it uses 32.. . but with all that space, f it
Yes, I'm definitely going to fiddle with block sizes and partitions a bit more. This was kind of a proof of concept and I'm glad that such a large partition works at all in the good old Amiga. ;)
Woo-hoo! Well done! I'm clearly not up to date with my Amiga modding, sadly. I would love to get a CF card going in my original A1200 -- I'll add this to projects list. Another great series.
@@JanBeta Yeah, I have had my A1200 torn apart for a while in order to do a recap, but I am slow to getting around to it. I also have a known-compatible Transcend brand 8GB CF card and a plain IDE-to-CF adapter ready to go.
I was considering that but I kind of like the hard disk whirring sound while the Amiga is running. That's why I didn't go with the CF card alone, too. ;)
Do you really need a power connector on the CF adapter? I have a CF card adapter on a 2.5in cable from the terrible fire and theres no external power connector. I bought a rear panel 3.5in IDE to CF adapter to use with a Buddha IDE card. The CF adapter has a floppy disk type of power connector. I don't think this needs external power does it? Surely its powered from the IDE ribbon cable as the 2.5in adapter is?
Why do you need power for the CF adapter? Won't it work without external power? I ask because I have a 2.5in CF adapter plugged into a Terrible Fire accelerator and theres no additional power connector.
Another solution: just set the disk up with OS 1.3. In 512 bytes per block. Calculate with the help of all your software how great every partition must be. Under OS 1.3 you must set all the data into a mountlist. But watch out. For the Workbench the kickstart ROM reserve for every 500 MB 75 kilobyte of ChipRam. The other partitions as Work or extern diskdrives going into fastram. In the mountlist you can set also the wanted buffers. Every buffer on the Amiga has 512 bytes standard. Working with SSD or CF is also possible under OS 1.3 but then must all the data under 488 bytes per block. OFS format. ( Is equal to ISO format. ) Then update OS 1.3 to your most wanted OS. ( I'am sorry for my bad English )
It is not easy, but in my situation i use a very old setuptool for to build up massive partitions. It is the HDToolbox of the A590 HD (1989) setup. And the 1.3 Format command is much much better then the one from kick and OS 2 and 3 and up. With the format from 1.3 even big partitions on memorycards and SSD's can be formatted in lowlevel format, if there's enough ChipRAM is available. So on the Amiga 2000 you need at least 1 MB of ChipRAM for to do this.
Hey Jan! thanks for a nice video as usual! I just bought a Buddha and a cf adapter similar to yours or if not the exact same. I do have a question. Did you leave the jumper OPEN on the Buddha for the IDE connector that goes to the CF card adapter ?
Man that was a lot to get it going and there is still an issue with workbenches, there must be a lack of some in one of them that causes it not to work, sadly my Amiga knowledge above 1.3 is limited but that sounds right somehow after all I hear about newer versions. The Jan Beta Way is best way!
Some commenters pointed out that Hyperion left out icon.library and workbench.library from the new Kickstart ROM (to have more room for other fixes) so it needs them on disk to boot the GUI. Which is kind of unfortunate, because some older Workbench disks are not going to work without copying these files to them. :/
