I love how Aang accomplished his mission because he IS the last Airbender and that it means that he's the only one who is carrying with the ideologies and traditions of air nomads 💜

YES! So many ppl think this part of the finale is kinda silly or is only there because they couldn't show Aang slaughter him to kids or smth, and I understand the desire to see war criminal dictator get killed, but while the 1st episode showed that the {imperialistic regime of the} Fire Nation failed to get rid of the Last Airbender physically, the last episode also shows that they failed to get rid of his people's culture and philosophy, it lives on through him too. Ozai says his ppl were weak and didnt deserve to live in this world and Aang defeats him while staying true to his people's teachings.

A little side note that you might like. At 40:57 , Aang produced five simultaneous fire blasts, which in s1 ep8, Shyu (the fire sage), said only a fully realized avatar could do.
That was the writer's subtle way of telling us Aang became one

Great call back! While editing I also noticed Aang went in and out of the avatar state pretty much at will after the fight ended (like a flash) when he was flooding the land to put out the fire. Roku did the same kind of thing when fighting Sozin.

Personally, I'm really glad Aang stood by his beliefs and ended Ozai's reign in his own way, not just because those beliefs were taught to him, but because they were him. He out of all characters encompassed empathy, kindness and forgiveness like no other. I can imagine what an isolating feeling it must have been sometimes, especially during a time of violence, cruelty and war. Being made to believe that murder is the answer to everything, and from every side of the conflict, too. Purposefully killing someone would have been so out of character for him, even for the greater good, and I think it would have haunted him for life. More trauma added to the horrors he already experienced. But in the end, Aang had unbendable spirit, and that's the best trait an Avatar can have.
I love revisiting the show through different reactions, but I gotta say, yours were exquisite. You always had great insight and thoughts about the culture, philosophy and plot of Avatar. It's been such a pleasure watching you, and you have a great laugh. If you're gonna watch Legend of Korra at some point, I will be definitely be here for that. I love the sequel just as much, and its a fantastic addition to the Avatar universe. Thank you for this journey

2:16 this moment gets looked over often but it’s probably one of the most beautiful thing ever. Toph did not know how to sand bend which led to Appa being taken away. So the fact that now she can create that masterpiece of a sand castle means she trained and made sure she mastered sand bending so that something like that would never happen again. Love that. Toph is the greatest

In a show full of great voice acting, Grey DeLisle in these episodes as Azula really stands out as being top tier voice acting. The animation for her is also quite good, especially how they show how differently she stands and fights while becoming unhinged. I always feel bad for Azula by the end of the show. She's only 14, and while she was the favored child she definitely suffered emotional abuse from Ozai. Ozai treated his first born son and heir as worthless and eventually burned and disowned him all because he wasn't an amazing Fire Bender and because Ozai perceived him as weak. If Azula showed anything other than perfection, how would Ozai treat her as the second child? That must be an unimaginable amount of pressure for a child to be under.

The character development and the payoff is a masterclass of writing. I agree you just need to take in the final battle, your reaction isn't necessary, It's just that good. Probably somewhat of an exaggeration. I've heard that before but I've never seen her actually say she was accessing her past trauma and most of her recordings were done alone with just like 2 people needed for the sound work and what not. And she hasn't really seen any of the series and Dante recently watched the series because he hadn't seen it either and so did Michaela Jill Murphy (Toph). She has said she was in tears at times during recordings but never that she was accessing her personal traumas.

The premiere of this finale averaged 5.6 million viewers tuning in.
The arrival of the great Melon Lord!!!
8:02 I think that the biggest difference here between Aang and Roku even in this moment is that Roku showed mercy and let the Sozin go. Aang still wants to defeat Ozai and end his reign, he just doesn't want to kill him to do that, but at the same time he has so much raw power and influence that he'd be too dangerous to just try and defeat him in a fight and then let him go. If Aang did the same thing Roku did the war would continue. Aang knows Ozai has to be removed to bring peace but he wants to do it in a way that doesn't involve killing.
The music when Aang is being drawn to the lion turtle is a Buddhist chant. The music without the chant has appeared twice before, both times in Book 1. Once during "The Winter Solstice part 2" when Roku is showing Aang Zhao and the other threats on the island and offers to take over Aang's body, and the other time during "The Siege of the North part 2" right as Aang enters the spirit oasis and merges with the Ocean Spirit.
Interesting thing to note, Bumi did say in "The King of Omashu" that Aang would need Momo's help during his journey.
I think Aang was meaning like directly killing someone, he might have created situations where people died (cutting the balloons, mini avalanche, etc.) but he's never directly killed someone. The only thing I would say Aang has directly killed would be the wasp vulture in "The Desert" that tried to take Momo.
An interesting thing is that the last chakra involved letting go of earthly attachments but Yangchen says the Avatar can never do this because his duty is to the world. I think that Guru Pathik made a mistake because while he did help Aang a lot while opening the other chakras, he was doing more of an airbender thing and not an Avatar thing.
The effects when the Avatars fade away is reminiscent of the element they were born to.
If you notice none of the past Avatars explicitly say "Kill Ozai". Roku: Be decisive, Kyoshi: Only justice will bring peace, Kuruk: You must actively shape your destiny and the destiny of the world, and then the closest is Yangchen: Do whatever it takes to protect the world
20:17 I still find it crazy how well the writers are able to incorporate jokes into such serious moments and yet it doesn't feel forced or really take away from the emotion of those moments. I'd say another example would be Sokka on cactus juice. Didn't take away from the mood of that episode and instead provided a few moments of much needed relief. Really says a lot about the skill of the writers.
There have been several little references to lion turtles throughout the show mostly in statues or other artwork. The two biggest are in "The Library" when they are just looking though various manuscripts they briefly show a very clear drawing of a lion turtle and in "Sokka's Master" Piandao says that Sokka has a heart the size of a lion turtle and twice as strong. The creators said that they had ideas of lion turtles and their backstory within the world all the way back during development of the test pilot. Unfortunately we don't get a lot of that backstory in the series. The idea of it comes both from the idea of the World Turtle in several ancient cultures and from the French creatrure the Tarasque which had the head of a lion and the shell of a turtle
The Old Masters is the only episode that the Ozai appears and Azula does not outside of Aang having a vision of Ozai. Even during "The Storm" when we have the flashback to the Agni Kai, Azula appears standing next to Iroh.
To Azula banishment is merciful. Possibly could have been something she got from Ozai because when Zuko turned during "The Day of Black Sun" Ozai said "Now I see that banishment is far too merciful a punishment for treason".
The two guys having that random conversation in the bomb bay before Sokka dropped them were voiced by the creators themselves.
Zuko managed to survive because he did redirect a lot of the lightning away but wasn't able to get the movement entirely right midair like that which is why he was so impacted by it. It didn't pass through his heart but it passed near his heart rather than through his stomach.
The giant light beam in the sky a nod to when Aang was first released from the iceberg.
48:52 There's a comic called The Search that addresses that. All the comics were made with the creators direction and approval and are canon.
The director of third episode "Into the Inferno" actually won and Annie Award for Best Directing in an Animated Television Production and the music coordinator and sound team were nominated for a Golden Reel for Best Sound Editing in a Television Animation for the final episode "Avatar Aang".
First episode of the series: "The Boy in the Iceberg" Final episode: "Avatar Aang" With the titles alone they were able to summarize Aang's entire journey from a simple boy in an iceberg who never even wanted to be the Avatar to finally accepting his role and bringing peace to the world.
Also the first like spoken in the series (not counting the opening) was "It's" and the last word spoken was "perfect". "It's perfect".
The ending is bittersweet. You never get to watch the series for the first time again. That part of the journey is over, but the love of Avatar and all the rewatches live on. And what a finale to end on too.
A just over 3 years ago Nickelodeon launched a new production company called Avatar Studios directly under the management of the creators Mike and Bryan as the chief creative officers and several other members of the production crew are also returning, and they're already working on new stuff. Another series set after Legend of Korra is planned for release sometime next year and there will also be a movie tied into that series to be released in 2027; October 10, 2025 there will be a movie in theaters with Aang and the team as adults, it's said they will be mid to late 20s-30s; then there will be a movie focusing on Zuko, no official release date but currently expected sometime in 2026; and finally in 2026 and 2027 two spinoff series that we currently have absolutely no info on aside from their existence. They've already confirmed Dante Basco is returning as Zuko in the 2025 movie (and likely the Zuko movie as well) although unfortunately none of the others are returning.
Edit: Something else I forgot to mention is that the last move Aang uses to beat Ozai seems to be one he used against Katara when they were training at the beginning of "The Cave of Two Lovers". The hand movements seem to be the same and the water also worked almost the exact same, a water tendril wrapping up his leg.
