Glaciers and ice caps only exist when the Earth is in an icehouse climate mode. Which it mostly is not, when you look back over hundreds of millions of years.

@ famous martian winds, wasn't that just a movie thing? The author himself apparently wrote: In reality, Mars' atmosphere is 1/200th the density of Earth's. So while they do get 150 km/hr sandstorms, the inertia behind them - because their air is so thin - it would feel like a gentle breeze on Earth.

No, we are actually moving closer and closer to the sun due to the slight imperfection of our speed and velocity in contrast to the sun. Yes, the sun is losing mass, but we will have burnt away long before the sun dies. The loss of the mass of the sun does not create a big enough attraction loss for our planet to stay in a stable orbit or to even cause deviation away from it.

What puzzles me is the Earth is so far from the sun it is like a tiny dot miles away from a football yet if we move a small distance on this tiny dot the temperature changes, at such a vast distance the temperature should not change.
Well, the slow drift away from the sun may save us, as the sun will continue to grow hotter and hotter while we drift farther and farther.
Who's us? The time frame that this happens in is so long. Humans will not exist. Either from death or evolution.
@@Roderickdl Well, I could argue that the process of us drifting away from the sun while it grows hotter is a constant process, so we are experiencing it as of right now.
@@ie2428 First, in a billion or so years the sun will be to hot for Earth's current orbit to support "intelligent" life. And that would be before the Sun becomes a red giant.
Second, at the rate of the expansion of the orbit as stated in the video, 1 cm a year, in a billion years Earth's orbit will be only 6,000 or so miles larger. The moon is 239,000 miles or so from the Earth. 6,000 miles will make no difference.
@@Roderickdl Everything you said I am already aware of. The problem with your statement is that you forgot to factor in how the loss of mass from the sun will affect our drift. The more mass the sun loses, the faster we will drift away. As the sun ages, its loss of mass will accelerate, especially during the red giant stage. It is actually believed in the scientific community that the Earth could save itself from the sun because it would have drifted far enough from the sun to have avoided being engulfed.
@@Roderickdl While you are correct that the current wildly excepted estimate is 1 billion years or so, you fail to consider the specific circumstances that could occur, allowing life to persist on.
