    I remember hearing somewhere, in a MrRhexx video iirc, that Tiamat had a harem of 5 dragons, one of each of the main chromatic colors, and would as a result occationally lay eggs that would result in dragons with multiple heads, which she would promptly devour. The lair effect of making natural water remove curses is fascinating. I kind of want to have a scenario where the dragon observes and approves of pilgrims making the trek, drinking from a spring to remove curses, and leaving offerings. A generation later, he finds out that the pilgrimage has become a business model for jerks - they conceal the way, and guide people who pay. Rumor has it they ambush non-paying pilgrims, and possibly even help spread curses to drum up business. The dragon would be displeased, and would ask the PCs to please investigate the matter before it gets so bad the dragon has to get involved personally, and no one really wants that.

      The lair stuff had me thinking about a King who, desiring the benefits a nearby Platinum lair would provide his city, strove to create the deepest, most inaccessible dungeon possible, right there in the center of the city. He made it 100 floors deep, 1000 feet on each side. He filled it with traps both mundane and magical, ranging in difficulty from the most obvious set-ups to downright unfair. The layout was a labyrinth, laden with shortcuts that didn't always lead forward, and twisting on itself in ways only possible through powerful spacial magic. And he imported Goodly beasts of many descriptions, building a thriving dungeon ecosystem unrepentantly hostile to the undead, the fiendish, and the unworthy. At it's center was a grand lair, appointed in the finest silks and golds, fit for ten kings. He did everything in his power to make the dungeon a true test of every kind of mettle, and set complicated mechanisms in the walls which could be manipulated from a control room in the center. Then, he sent out a call, inviting young Platinum dragons seeking home to his city, if only they would stay there and let their energies seep into his wells and streets.
      His plan worked.
      Now, a hundred years later, the king's great grandson faces an unjust war. His brother, the vile Prince Agister, has bought a claim to the throne in blood and coin, and presses it with an army of bandits and orcs. The rightful King fears Agister may just be stronger than he can provide, not without killing his kingdom in the very act of saving it, and so he offers a party of adventurers a quest - to enter the Platinum Labyrinth, and seek out Grunwald, the Platinum Dragon at the center, who has not been seen since moving in. The dungeon has aged, and many of it's internal wells dried up, but those that still sate thirst cure the many curses layered in those empty halls.
      What's more, Agister has also sent forth a party of his own, a team of assassins. The party now must race down the 100 floors of the Platinum Labyrinth, facing more and more dreadful threats as they go, hounded by the forces of evil, if they want to save the kingdom from Agister's black gloved fist. They can't be sure that Grunwald is even still in the dungeon, but it is the only hope they have... And some strange force seems to be happy to keep things fair, even when the forces of darkness use dirty tricks. Could this too be the influence of the dragon, a blessing of fortune? Or is it simply a deeper, crueler trick by something malevolent?

    I love how the existence of these platinum dragons explains subtly why we never *see* good chromatic dragons. Because if they were so good in nature to over come the expected behaviors of their sub species, then they'd ascend! I've always subscribed to the idea that there *can* be good in any typically evil creature, so having reasons why the "myth" that a species is exclusively evil came to be, is always awesome.
    Edit: also as a plot hook, I imagine that Tiamat would *really* hate her chromatic dragons being converted to Bahamut's side.

      We even know for a fact that evil and good are not inherent, even in the lore of the Forgotten Realms. The fact that angels CAN become fallen proves this. These good and evil labels are meant to be descriptive, not prescriptive. Even for beings who presumably are physical manifestations of a realm of evil, like Devils, are not necessarily evil at an individual level.

    • @rubyriches
      @rubyriches 2 місяці тому +1

      Evil beings can inadvertently or to cover their intentions, do good but ultimately some fictionally & in reality are ungood for everyone not them & thus are evil by nature vs evil by race or usual racical action or belief.

      The idea of a fallen platinum.
      Where the ascension ritual was distribed gives an interesting chance for this.
      A curse hitting a dragon at that moment or
      The mists of the dread lands stealing the dragon in the midst of the rite.....
      Perhaps a evil dragon attempted the rite.... Thinking it had hid its misdeeds and it's repentance was already enough....
      In essence a hypocrite dragon. But it's darkness and repeated attempts got it cursed by bahamut instead and sent to the shadowfells.
      Possibly in it's own domain of dread as a false platinum/shadow dragon.

    This came at the perfect time for me. I'm running a game right now where the party has been touched by entities from the Far Realm that are attempting to twist them into suitable vessels so they may enter the material plane, and I was already planning on having an enclave of Oath of the Watchers paladins run by a dragon being a major focal point in the story as far as fighting back against that influence. My original plan was to use a silver dragon, but now I've got the idea in my head that this dragon may have had a part in sealing away these Far Realm gods in the past, and due to their heroism, were ascended to a platinum dragon. Add in the fact that most of the party already have less than moral inclinations, and there's some real sauce there for potential character growth.
    Plus, I already put the lair/enclave at the top of the tallest mountain in the region, so even that lines up perfectly.

    I actually created a whole reason why Bahumet in a world is called ‘The’ Platinum Dragon. Long story short, he’s called that because he’s literally the last of his kind. The rest of his kin were killed because they were the most powerful of the metallics, and the soon to be Tiamat of that world wanted her reign to be unopposed. Unfortunately for her, Bahumet was the biggest and strongest of his kin and had a kindred with mortals which put him in a unique position to not only survive but lead the charge against her.

The two platinum elders were resummoned upon his binding and the party effectively had to beg them to sacrifice themselves once more to reunite the two aspects of the platinum God. I'm losing a lot of context but the party of 6 ended at lvl20 and faught both statblocks of tiamat the final blow being the "rust" dragon born sorc ripping themselves out of avernis and piercing her body, when asked what the player would do with their act of slaying a God they replied "I eat her heart". One way I see the Platinum Dragon being placed is a scenario where the divinity and influence of Bahamut and the Platinum Dragons do not originally exist in the scenario; As an example I use the most famous RPG scenario here in Brazil called "Tormenta 20". In it I would say that the Bahamut discovered this new scenario and with the luck of Tiamat not knowing about it. So he decides to leave a Platinum dragon egg in this new world and the most powerful wizards felt this and the characters are sent to find and protect this platinum dragon before it is found by the villains of that world and destroyed.

    Not gonna lie I went into this one expecting to heavily dislike the concept as I thought a race of platinum dragons would detract from how cool it was for Bahamut to be the only one. That being said, I absolutely loved this one. The idea of Bahamut and Xymor being the same along with Lendys and Tamara reminds me of a fantasy version of the Christian Trinity (which regardless of your religion is a neat concept to draw from), and keeping that in mind platinum dragons attaching themselves to mortal kingdoms makes me think of them as the literal embodiment of the divine right of (good) kings. I started out expecting this to be interesting but not for my game table and now I’m brimming with ways I plan on incorporating platinum dragons in my homebrew campaign setting. Very well done!

    I am certainly glad to have had this video. I have a Forgotten Realms writing project, and one of the characters is a Kobold from a tribe that follows a Silver Dragon who in turn is dedicated to Tamara. The dragon, at least when last heard from (his trail of of good deeds and new temples breaks off a few years ago) seeks to restore Tamara to life and power.
    Meanwhile, I also plan for the Kobold character to eventually be transformed into a Platinum Kobold and raised to divinity by Asgorath.
    Anyway, I am very grateful for those snippets from Ed, and am pleased to say that, except for the detail of it being Bahamut who raises dragons to Platinum, everything Josiah proposes for Platinum Dragons fits fine with my own ideas.

  • @HenriFaust
    @HenriFaust 10 місяців тому +3

    I think it needs to be more clear that something funny is going on near the lair, even when the platinum dragon isn't taking active measures against someone. The lair needs another, or perhaps an upscaled, regional effect, like speeded healing, empowered turning, heightened spells from a specific school, or even something that's just cosmetic (maybe aasimar, celestial, or draconic creatures are born like a bolt out of the blue there). Making the surroundings semi-divinely morphic to tie in with the godly aspect of the platinum dragon would also work, or perhaps the surroundings reflect whatever Bahamut is doing to his own home plane, but in subdued form.

    Peak editing, DD 👌🏽 (That isn't to say this is where you peak; I can't wait to see how far you'll go and what you'll be doing next 😁)
    So many thoughts on this one and this comment box is too small to fit them all. Here are two that stood out to me the most for sharing:
    - What if the antagonist platinum dragon was a Dracolich that Bahamut ascended as punishment, thus casting off its lichhood? 😂 The party is trying to stop it from switching back somehow. (And maybe Bahamut was correct in having this ex-lich face the party: this is what allows it to recognize the errors of its past and becomes content with its new sheen.)
    - I could easily see the "tapestry" of good deeds actually being etched or tattooed into the platinum dragon's scales, fins, or crest...so when it slithers or flies, the events or deeds come to life in some kind of enchanted way and portray what it's done.
    Thanks, as always! 👏🏽 And it's so cool you got to talk to Ed Greenwood!

    I could see this being an amazing plot hook for a Yellow Dragon. Either you are helping a dragon ascend by doing a good deed, and what better than killing the one dragon type no other dragons like.
    Or for the good side of things maybe a yellow dragon is sick of being outcasted from/hunted by all other dragons, all because their ancestors didn’t help during the war against Giants, so they want to prove to the world that they aren’t just sit around and hide away in isolation by ascending into a Platinum Dragon.

    I do think that in the case of the platinum dragon as a chosen of Bahamut, it cannot be anything other than Lawful Good. No “typically” as we see monster stats lately, because it is anointed by Bahamut due to its actions and morals. If that changes at any point, I think it would be appropriate that the dragon would be stripped of its status and revert back to its original typing.

    I had an idea a while ago for a campaign where the players have found an egg which hatches under their care, and out comes a platinum dragon. They then get chased by multiple factions who want the dragon, but through visions have been warned that they are the ones who must bring it to Celestia. Unfortunately, something is interfering with planar travel to Celestia, so they have to get a spelljammer and set off into the astral sea, searching for keys that will allow them access. Once there, Celestia is in ruins and Bahamut is nowhere to be found. They must battle their way through hordes of fiends to find the BBEG, defeat him, and bring the baby platinum dragon to the peak, where it will transform back into Bahamut himself. I haven’t fleshed out all the details, but I think it sounds interesting for a high-level campaign.

    With the platinum dragons lore, it just takes me to God of War (2018~2023) message "We Must Be Better".
    Also, a plot hook. A platinum dragon requests a party to look for old hoard locations of a particularly old nasty, vile dragon. They hope to right their previous sins, and redistribute/reperate the denizens/tribal people they acquired it from, or give it up as charity. Rewards could be a semi-ascension akin to platinum dragon, or some of its body parts (gruesome, I know, but it could heal it quickly) specific knowledge written down from its past deeds, etc

    Back in 4E, I started a homebrew campaign that featured Bahamut heavily (or his servants at least). "The Platinum Dragon" was more a title than a descriptor, similar to how other gods had titles like "The Lord of Battle", "The Fisher King", "The Lady of the Swarm", "The White Death", etc. So there was plenty of room for other platinum dragons, and I took advantage of this to turn his servants (based on the seven gold wyrms) into platinum dragons. As they were essentially his version of an angel and practically demigods, they became platinum dragons when he invested them with his power to serve him. Of the three that appeared in the campaign, two were formerly gold and one was formerly bronze.

    Tainting a Platinum Dragon ritual creates a Lead Dragon.
    Heavy; toxic; base/lowly; false/dishonest; tarnished brilliance; hoards evidence of its just (read: tyrannical) rulership.
    Two breath weapons: one bestows a random condition on creatures that fail their saving throw, and the other does poison damage that ignores poison resistance and lowers maximum hit points by half the damage dealt.
    Just a thought.

    I like how one needs to ascend to become a platinum dragon. It reminds me of the old Dragonborn of Bahamut race from 3.5.
    It was a race that wasn't born, but "reborn". Basically any humanoid race could become a platinum scaled dargonborn but they had to be first chosen by Bahamut then go through a lengthy ritual where they would become an egg. They would then hatch as a dragonborn.

    • @mattmoseley6429
      @mattmoseley6429 10 місяців тому

      I had the exact same though as Ed brought up the ascension. I felt like it could literally be the same ritual. Also i don'[t know it it is the official cannon now but there was a retroactive theory that posed that the 4e/5e dragonborn from abeir started as a corruption of those eggs by tiamat cultist. Before that those 3e platinum dragonborn are sterile and the Cromatic corruption inadvertently made the abeir dragonborn able to reproduce, hence why 4e dragonborn were all chromatic (except for some of characters in the novels). That was then retconned and let metallic dragonborn arise as half-dragon/sorcerous lineage descendants kinda like the bg3 incorrect character creation dragonborn flavor-text. there is also the other rationale of them being made by asgotrath/io long ago in abeir to be servants/ soldiers for dragon kind. I think that latter one is the 5e explanation but may have been a mid 4e era retcon.
