I'm not here to debate against your thoughts about the movie. I just wanted to quote your statement here "LJP known for his quirks. For mixing elements of pop culture, faith, religion, folklore, philosophy, nature and the place of mankind" . I would like to say that this movie had all that in a quite different way. For example: To talk about the folklore and religion. Lets look at this: The hindu symbolism conveyed in the movie is...the ultimate face off in the end suggests that it is a face off between the lord shiva vs lord muruga(who is the son of lord shiva). We can understand this in the movie itself where one of the female characters calls valiban as "mayilvaaganan", which means that the god who travels in peacock. The only God who travels in peacock is Lord muruga. In the mythology, lord muruga fights with Lord shiva and goddess Parvati and leaves the home and stays in the mountain. Likewise, in the movie Valiban is living without his parents, not because of his own anger but because of the age old vengeance of aiyanaar(who is also a protector god by the way). And the joker like character played by Danish sait is purely an alter ego figure of Aiyanaar who is having the vengeance inside but couldn't express it and finally when aiyanaar comes out of his skin in the end, he kills his alter ego. Likewise, the philosophy of mankind is expressed beautifully in the third act where we get to know that there is no place is more lonelier than being at the top. And to talk about the quirks, The machine gun you were talking about..the director meant to keep it in a farcical level like many other such things in the movie. All i want to say is that the movie had all the LJP touches. But i can understand that it didn't connect well with you. May be he can come up with more accessible art next time!!

Wow! Gr8 observation n connect to Muruga.. Yes, the father figure is more of Shiva.. And the alter ego part of Danish n it was evident in the last act with his face juxtaposing with Aayinaar

Becoz this movie breaks all cinematic grammer, something you haven't seen before, which need a mindset that time to accept. Instead of calling it a cult movie after 5-10 years, after repeat watching. Go and enjoy in big screen before it goes out..

Beyond the main plot of the film I felt "Malaikottai Valiban" was also a journey of the growth of our popular form of entertainment... If the first scene is reminiscent of ancient plays where the clown first appears and narrates the story (the very first frame of the film was reminiscent of a stage)... then the horse is lost. The part that tells the story of the warrior has the appearance of a satire... From there, the film travels to the shadowy pavkoot (Yarat? Nan Devi) and the North Indian Nautanki (the song scene in "Ezhimala Kota") and when it reaches Mangad Kalari, the film shifts to the vibrancy of the Great Indian Circus. The fight choreography and the structure of the show is like that of a circus...
Then the film takes on the look of late 70s Bollywood movies (including a direct tribute to the "Mehbooba" song from Sholay) when it goes to Ampathur Kota... Then when it reaches Thirchenthur Pooram, it's a heady mix of 80s Tamil film narratives and Shakespearean tragedies' character creations... in the post climax. The film ends with a hint of a superhuman character in the VFX/AI era...

The Animal post credits shot aptly summarizes Lijo's intent with this film. It's everything Lijo promised it to be - a superhero spaghetti western fairy tale, but in his own auteuristic anti-establishment way. He even lets go of traditional screenwriting structure, opting for an episodic narrative. He introduces an internal conflict for Vaaliban AFTER the so called climax. As a screenwriter, it is super exciting and eye-opening for me to see the norms challenged, and I accept it because it's LJP doing it with conviction. For the average film goer however, these things clearly may not be seen as merits.

The biggest mistake that Malayalees make is that their perspectives and jugdements are built on such aberration, losing their discernment to understand what's good or bad. After Jallikattu
I've decided to watch the movie that comes with the name Lijo Jose, I should watch it on the big screen.
After Malaikottai valibhan, I'm still not changing the decision coz more than any story, I want to enjoy what a wonderful light and sound show it is.
By saying it is a light and sound show, I don't degrade his movie making sense but how much I love the movie making.
When I saw Nanpagal nerathu mayakkam, I could enjoy the staging and of course the philosophy of the movie
In malaikottai vaaliban i enjoy the staging to a greater extent, but the Philosophy or the way in which it was told is not great. It felt plain.
Even for the first half of the movie I thought it must be a western and the movie had the visual aesthetics of a western movie. But after the victory at the Malaikottai, I didn't understand the point of the movie for sometime, till I got to know about the drama that brewed up, which was planted well but was too instant
Once the real story was narrated by aasaan, I was happy, at last something quirky is happening
But 2 seconds later I hated that, the particular thing gonna happen and I'm gonna be irritated on seeing it.
    Exactly it happened

Why are the reviewers hating this film ...it's very surprising ... first of all ...I cannot understand the hype created by youtubers and critics ... it is an LJP film , what are people expecting .... His only Commercial film is AMEN ....all other films of his are non commercial.... I can understand the normal audience hating it ... I personally went to the film with open mind with zero expectation and it blew my mind ... It is basically a Amar Chitra Kadha or one of those stories your grandparents would tell you ... Go for that mindset ...not for A MohanLal mass flick

Its not a prank. This is wat Lijo does. Thts exactly wat he is. He doesn't make movies for the audiences' expectations or presumptions. Even not to tht of an LJP "fan". Tht unpredictable way of filmmaking/ storytelling is his signature. So, comparing a single movie of LJP wid an another LJP movie itself wont work out. Everything v felt dissatisfied about in this film is by design. If u follow LJP movies, then thts the factor u shud have noticed to the least. So, u either like it or dislike it. Nothing else.

Sad to see masterpiece like Malaikkotte Vaaliban being disgraced and bombed in theatres and by so called ‘reviewers’ alike . Reviewers should actually be educating their audience by promoting original movies like this . Instead they prefer to suggest those Template movies like KGF and Baahubali . Once this movie is out of the theatres , I am sure this will be revered as a classic , mark my words.

      2) there's nothing wrong with 'template' movies like kgf or bahubali. Ofcourse you're free to dislike it and can express your views, but slotting them all under some bracket that somehow suggests them as 'inferior' is wrong, imo
      3) I don't know what you mean by 'original' movie. LJP has self confessed that this is a mashup of a lot of movies he's loved since he was a child, and that he himself believes there's nothing 'original' in this world

while i watching malaikottai valiban i thought it is all about the journey of a warrior with his two friends. when valiban reached the malaikottai i thought he is so far practicing to defeat those Portuguese rulers. After valiban defeating those malaikottai rulers i thought its going to be a happy ending movie but at the last twenty minutes every character in the movie got changed thats really worked for me because valiban repeatative dialogue is "what you seen is not true and from now on what you see is true".The movie also moving like that. At the last minute where its end like son is so far practicing to defeat his father is blew my mind. What i am trying to say is when we reached the end of the movie if we connect those dots in backwards its a different movie now. Its a different experience thats what i expected from lijo jose.

    *Liked the movie, Conditions apply.*
Felt that the movie had enough issues especially in the screenwriting and storty telling especially in the first half. I was not able to connect to the characters especially Valiban's till the end of the scenes in Red. Also few times I appreciated the technical brilliance of the movie, which I personally feel is not a good aspect in your first watch because i am not fully emersed into the experience.
But still, the visuals are one of the best I had seen in the recent time, even making me remember legendary movies of Akira Kurasawa and modern classics like The Northman.
Also after the color turns Yellow, I was hooked. This might be considered, by popular standards, too late to get the audience attached to the characters, but I surprisingly felt it refreshing.

I love how lovers of the movie and LJP ate trying to safeguard their interpretation of the film. I'm an LJP fan too since his first films. This may still flop and we'll have Animal, Fighter and other crass cinema become mega hits and that's just the way many Indias work.
    This is my interpretation :
I think most of LJP movies have a subliminal undertone of how food, culture, language work in our world through an engaging narrative that plays out in a story.
    Angamaly - Anger through food
Ee Ma Yu - Grief through extreme animosity and chaos
    Jalikattu - Greed through Frenzy
All visceral. All OST wise and cinematography wise brilliant.
    Nanpakkal -
Here it's visceral with beautiful visuals and ost stay with you. Story plays out okay. Interesting setup.
Alienation through rebirth. No sense or place of belonging. And Tamil and Malayalam as languages and states through that. So it must have hit home. But as an outsider, alienation could be setup and played out better, emotionally. I'm not sure.
    Mallikottai Valiban -
Through this film, LJP is showing how India, whatever version of it's culture was, it's language was uprooted multiple times. Including lord Mcklaulay who screws it up around 1800s by bringing in English too.
The interval scene plays out like the 1857 uprising. Read more about Lord McCaullay screw ups from 1830-1860s and you will know.
And Valiban is actually a metaphor for Tamil /Sanskrit whatever you want to call it or the combination of culture that makes up India. Hence "truth that cannot be seen".
The end or somewhere close to end is what is becoming of the country through the death of it's people, breaking of countries, the extreme Hindu fanaticism etc.
And the part 2 is where old India clashes with new India. It's old Sanskrit+ Tamil + whatever other languages that made up India vs the new screwed up India or vice versa whichever way you look at it.
It's the Indian freedom struggle before english came, during and post and what happened to it's language, culture and how do we move ahead.
Hence Valiban breaking free is also freedom from the English. Signified by chains, doves flying, uprising etc etc. even the brother and the girlfriend dying like how Gandhi was shot in a sea of orange/yellow/potential fanatics.
And here Betrayal/Treachery plays out as strongest emotion.
PS: i could be completely wrong about this, but that's what i could sense even from the farcical machine gun plot.
