14:55 lovely use of the Central ident fading into the Blockbusters intro - I’ve always thought that was genius work from Central. That must have been 1987/8?
Good to see the end cap for the 1994 season of Blockbusters, which was on Sky, not ITV. Notice how it says (37:00) “A Central Programme”, not “a Central production for ITV [or even Sky, as it should have been here]”.
@Rene: I am not sure what year that was but, I think it was before 87 as the logo was changed slightly by that time too became known as "The Cake" with the symbol being in blocks with a the rainbow bit blocked also. This one still looks like the older logo so its a lot earlier than 87. Central wasn't the only region to do that blending stuff, Yorkshire TV's logo would morph into the 3 2 1 titles, and London Weekend TV morphed into Russel Harty's titles also.
Granting Carlton an ITV licence back in 1991 was a terrible mistake. The ITC should've disqualified them on quality grounds and not only Thames would've stayed but Central would've been saved from Carlton's awful branding.
True, but then it's probably likely that Granada would have bought it instead. Regardless the brand would have disappeared, it's all Maggie Thatchers fault for bringing the Broadcasting Act 1990 in and allowing consolidation of the network ownership
Even though I live in London the Central logo always has great memories. Family Fortunes, Bullseye, Auf Wiedersehen Pet, Woof, Palace Hill, Emus World to name a few. Absolutely despised Carlton in London and also ruined Central
Central is one of more diferenciables ITV franchises, since the adoption of the cake logo in 1985 they have much interesting variations with differents textures, forms and colours, the ATV's reestruction give very results to the company
Sonic the Hedgehog was debut in 1981. Miles Tails Powder was debut in 1982. Amy Rose was debut in 1984. Knuckles the Echidna was debut in 1987. Rouge the Bat was debut in 1989. Espio the Chameleon was debut in 1992. Mina Mongoose was debut in 1994. Rotor the Walrus was debut in 1986. Nicole the Holo-Lynx was debut in 1990.
7:02 I recognise that little snippet, but can't put my finger on it. I much preferred the 9th logo, but being very young when it was introduced it was my first. In the early 90's, on my way to school, I used to pass a truck with this logo on it. Possibly an old OB vehicle that had been sold off and never repainted. I always used to think how much better it was
Interesting story behind Central's name. I'm not far from their old Lenton Lane, Nottingham studios (Central East before they moved from up near their Temp base near Ikea in Giltbrook... Building is still there along with stage 7, part of Nottingham University), apparently someone had the idea of registering variants of Central television, in order to profit from the potential sale of said name rights, so in order to get around this, Central's official name was Central Independent Television.
The 1985 introduction of the Cake really made Central professional compared to the utter embarrassment it came on air with in 1982. But god it became utterly ridiculous how many variations of the logo were made. Saying that it’s a shame the current management of ITV would demand a rebrand
You are literally not watching sonic videos you are literally watching on ITV company that literally purchased by a no longer existing company so this means you’re not watching a sonic video and you are meant to play sonic after watching it
1:10:00 This Central Video Cake Logo Is Taking From The 1991 The Video Collection UK VHS Release Of Rosie And Jim The Original Series Volume 4 Butterflies And Other Stories. Thanks Mate. X❤
Black and white ATV logo was one of my first tv memories growing up in Coventry. My aunty worked for Central in Brum when it started. I can tell I stopped watching tv around 1985 cos I don’t recognise the idents after that 😂
@Reylan Avila Agua Alter Official YT 2nd channel: Whenever one of the older programmes from the archives was broadcast, it would have a "Central Presents" bumper on it first before the old ATV ident. This would happen for the educational children's programme, Stop Look Listen, Tiswas, The Muppet Show, and the Crossroads soap. Central wasn't an actual ITV franchise change, it was a rebrand. Because the IBA [ Independent Broadcasting Authority ] wanted ATV to concentrate on being Midlands based, and if they didn't comply they would be replaced, so they renamed themselves Central Television [ full name Central Independent Television ]and gave their Elstree Studios to the BBC and had two studios in Birmingham and Nottingham serving both East and West Midlands areas. So technically they were the same company in retrospect but with a different outlook, name and ident.
Curious to know, why did Central advertise Channel 4 programmes during certain periods? Surely they'd want people to stay on ITV for revenue? Or was it different back then?
At the time, both ITV and Channel 4 where run by the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA). This was changed with the broadcasting act of 1990 which replaced the IBA with the ITC who did not run Channel 4 and let companies buy up franchises (which is why Carlton took over)
I'm practically next door to East Mids Airport, so obviously served first by Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham (West Mids) in the very early days (Can still connect to this now), and Waltham, Leicestershire (East Mids). Another interesting thing, at a push, we could also get YTV from the Sheffield area.

9th logo, the solid globe with the rainbow edge was the best logo.
Ah, the days of different regional logos, the good days of ITV.
Animators: So how many variations of the Cake ident do you want?
Central: *YES*
Miss these idents, the extended one on 52 minutes which got played when there was technical problems is great.

They did similar with the 2nd series of Auf Wiedersehen Pet. The Central Ident turned into a Roulette wheel ball that Dennis was losing money at.
that logo was used in 1983
i grew up in Leicestershire in the 80s and only ever knew the Central idents... i wish i was around to see the ATV ones 😊
Interesting :-)
There was some programmes in 1980s in Leicestershire which had the ATV logo but can’t remember what now

Growing up in Stoke, this is why ‘central’ was my first word
Central set the bar so high when it comes to jingles and animation that it was difficult for the other ITV stations to compete.
Thank you for the memories of good old central
