TBH I get it. We're always talking this "Essence of Hip-Hop" talk and I'm an old head (40), so I remember the battles of old, but rappers nowadays are a lot more older and wiser than the pioneers. J. Cole is 39 years old, which is more than twice the age of the 17 year old pioneers that made dissing a thing. When you think about it, what good have we ever gotten from rap beef? Remy defeated Nicki, so Nicki retired and Remy didn't put out any music = the fans lose. We lost MC Shan, Ja Rule, Canibus, and a host of other great talent, because someone else won a beef... not to mention all the artists that lost their lives due to that culture. What we all truly want is that Kendrick and Cole collab. Both Kendrick and Cole are fathers, what do they look like writing passionate critiques of each other? Not a popular take, but the culture needs to mature a bit.

@@Shadybiglpac 💯 even in competitive sports, you have the concept of "good sportsmanship", because their have always been adults and mentors that know that wild rivalries can spiral out of control (just look at soccer hooligans, as an example). When you have this crab in the barrel mentality, it robs us of great collab like the Cole/Kendrick album, we lose great artists, AND it promotes snubbing and gatekeeping. The truth is that beef has robbed us of lots of collaborations and good music/art, and even the lives of great artists... but it's just "weak" I guess? Jcole 's apology and some random thoughts.
(While this is post is gonna be looong, I'd recommend you read it throughout, cause I think it says what YOU may be thinking.)
I see a lot of talks about Cole backing out of "Fear" - but to me that's not the case.
I mean, he pulled a triple entendre with the "Stone Temple Pilots" bar and all that. Plus he's hung out with the likes of Daylyt, Soul, Royce, Benny.
So I don't even think it's fear of being lyrically bested, I think it's something much more worse and frustrating.
And you'll unsurprisingly realize that if you've followed Cole his whole career.
Lil Pump basically led a movement to clown this MF, and he still thought himself to be Jesus and "sit down and talk".
Another case is the no name saga..he even made the thing worse by his response -indirectly acknowledging what No Name said??
Did Kendrick say anythin? Why does he feel like he has to dying on hip-hop's cross? to save who? Lol.
Incase you haven't caught it by now -he's too much a Nice guy, and trying to keep that “Humility and peace” image. Which makes zero sense when it comes to a genre like fuckin rap!!!
So I don't think it's fear, rather, naivety, nice guy syndrome and just lack of self respect.
Seriously one of my main grips with Cole has been this nice guy, "humble "persona he keeps puttin on(especially in a genre like hip-hop) which I thought was kinda slowly wearin off with his recent releases.
But did hanging out with Drake made him soft again or what?
On a more personal level, I remember by roommate being the one that got me into Cole.
Now the nigga had a particular scorn for Eminem, and I had a particular scorn for Cole too cause I believed the whole "Cole is boring and overrated" stuff without actually listening. So there was this unspoken competition between us when it comes to our favorites. But he ended up winnin me over to Cole. So before now, I've been grateful for him for introducin me to Cole.
Listenin to Cole these past years has been surreal, like I've been missing a lot. Infact the good on features but bad on albums thing ironically made me like him more cause it reminded of a GOAT of the character -Andre 3k.
And talkin about that, he should from now on just stick to Andre 3k type artistry -try and be an actually great rapper technically.. and definitely stop making claims like “a beef with me is like the BET awards I bet you niggas don't want it"
From Royce(Eminem's and Tariq's only equal) to JID to Bas to Krit to Benny ..now to Daylyt and Soul, he's consistently proved he can either outrap or equal high caliber spitters. I thought he's acquired all the aspects of "rap rap", with only a 10/10 album, and battle rap remaining.
One thing he doesn't realize is that with this, the standards for the Fall off just soared so high.
Just like he's deleting his diss from the aplty named EP, the Fall off might be his true fall off.
So he better come with S+++ work on the Fall off..cause this is def weirdly stewpid lmfao.

I think this mixtape was actually thrown together pretty quick. He's been saying a little lately/over the past year or two (paraphrasing), "I should just release all my music regardless of quality cus it came from me and its me". I think this mixtape was one of those cases and from a technical standpoint, this is probably some of J Cole's best rapping (slight contradiction lol), but I do feel like there's no real direction or story being told with the bars, hence I don't feel like this is some of his best work lyrically. Technically, fantastic... lyrically, not so sure, which leads back to my idea of this being thrown together quite quickly. We still have It's A Boy and The Fall Off. I think it was Ives that was asked what his favourite Cole album is, and he said The Fall Off. I believe that the Cole's technical and lyrical abilities will shine brightest on those two albums (I hope). I refuse to believe any rapper can have 6 iterations of an album, and by the time we get to hear it, it's mid 😂 I'm a bigger Kendrick fan than Cole, but I really hope J Cole's last two projects are classics. I think a lot of people looking at this from a young man's perspective. You got to remember who j Cole is as a person. He doesn't really like confrontation. And I know it surprising given what industry he's in, but he doesn't want to fight someone. He said that in the song twice that he didn't want to fight Kendrick and that people been hunting him down and begging him for a toxic reply which is why he didn't even create such a heavy diss track is because he didn't want to do it to begin with and that it's just not was right in his spirit. And one unfortunate thing about hip hop is the community loves toxic behavior. And for Cole this right here was just enough to make him realize this is not something that he wants to do cuz it doesn't sit right with him. The fact that he even put negativity out in the world for him I respect him for it.

I don't. I'm an old man and I know that true wisdom is keeping your mouth shut in the first place, and if you do choose to talk, back up your words. Thats true hip hop, thsts real. Cole wants the benefits of the beef with none of the work and effort that it takes. Its weak and honestly I respect him a lot less than I would have if he would have kept his mouth shut.
A giant doesn't need to move unless provoked and he just proved that "arms too short" Kendrick provoked him to write an entire track, after one or two bars. And then "U N O" Cole backs off before he even gets a response.
This is weak. No way to spin this one.

I think it’s so stupid that people are upset that J Cole “apologized” and that he’s not “Big 3” for it. Him and Kendrick used to have a pretty close relationship and I really don’t think anything happened between them that caused them to fall out. It seems that Cole probably understands that he doesn’t need to choose sides in this “Hip Hop War” thing going on and that he’s just a dude trynna make great music. These dudes for the most part going at it over a female for the most part which has nothing to do with Cole.

He is already a top 3 and his legacy in the rap game is already sealed, and he did all of that without constant dissing or beefing with anyone. That just tell us the kind of artist he is, and if diss rap is not on him then it is for the best he doesn’t indulge further
After all no matter how good bars J cole may have againts Kendrick, the youtube critics are still going to gass up Kendrick so why bother giving it your all to a un winnable battle and then losing a friend in the end? ( ex: Fantano and. His constant Kendrick meat ridding).

Tbh I think Cole is making a pretty smart move here. He responds to Kendrick with a “warning shot” (even though he basically said everything he could possibly diss Kendrick about and some of it was even false like the bars about Kendrick’s discography. He knows he can’t go toe to toe with Kendrick in a rap beef ( just compare the bars in Kendricks like that verse and the bars in 7 minute drill and the fact that Cole’s “paying homage” bars are just him biting other more skilled rappers bars), so he apologises to Kendrick as a way to back out of the beef before Kendrick has a chance to respond. If Kendrick responds now he will look like the petty one and Cole will take the moral high ground. So apologising is a win win for Cole since his fans think he bodied Kendrick with 7 minute drill ( even though he had a full song and Kendrick only had a verse which was mainly targeted at drake in the first place) and he gets the promotion for the fall off ( whether good or bad promotion is promotion). Fair play to Cole he gets to save face.

He has been very open about supporting both drake and Kendrick. It was obvious he didn't have any real beef with either. Real fans saw this coming from a mile away. He has a pure heart.
