How old you say you was? Thirteen in 1989? I wouldn't figure someone with your wit and wisdom of repair to be one minute under sixty! Keep the repair hits coming, and remember to clean off new acquisition in this day and age of COVID19!

I enjoy your videos and your no nonsense approach. I also have had nightmare E-Bay sellers with stupid packing, damaged machines, etc. Fortunately, they are few and far between. I don't buy on E-Bay anymore because the sellers have gone insane. I saw a blank cassette tape listed for $500 two days ago! I said "I'm out of here, there's no intelligent life on E-Bay". These sellers will eventually destroy E-Bay with their absurd expectations.

True story... Just serviced a decent Sony CD clock radio, cleaned the optics, ran it for hours, etc and it's ready for photos and listing. Average sold price is $35 to $40 area (it's a nice model) - the only one listed now is by some wingnut for $229. I worked at Radio Shack back in the 1970's (I know, strike 2 against me!!!) when Realistic audio is big and actually quite good. Yet I see these dreamers asking crazy money for a nothing special Realistic receiver. Sometimes it's a Foster built unit (the best ones and some are worth top dollar) and sometimes it's an older Hitachi built unit (never sounded good - pre-1975) or a real sh_t box Pioneer from the early 1970's which were Allied carry-overs. Some fool has a QTA-753 quad listed (Hitachi) marked down to $109. I have one like it here - no hurry as I'd be glad to pull $29 out of it. Restored.

Alan Maier I have a little Realistic STA-64 receiver from '77 and I think it's made by Foster. It's not a bad receiver at all. I used to enjoy going in RS, until the early '90's and they have been going down the toilet every since. Now, about all they are good for is selling cell phones. When I was a kid in the '80's and '90's, the employees usually knew their product and could help you.

radiotvphononut Indeed I remember it well. I worked at Radio Shack when that receiver was current. Around 1974, Tandy discontinued every Hitachi built receiver and switched to Foster for nearly all models. There was even a new TOTL Hitachi built receiver that never made the catalog, but every store received at least one. Honestly the Hitachi ones were reliable and well built, but they did not sound good. My first receiver was a Realistic STA-75, just a little older than the STA-64. I'd buy one out of nostalgia, but the eBay prices are crazy on it.

+clydesight A blank cassette for $500? That is nuts. Blank TDK cassettes are still sold at Walgreen's. You can buy a 5 pack of 90 minute tapes for $6.95. I probably have a few blank tapes in a drawer somewhere.

+radiotvphononut My first stereo in 1973 started with a very basic 30 watt component amp that Radio Shack sold for $29. It was just a small box about the size of a TV digital converter box. It had 4 hard rubber knobs on it. On/Off/Volume. Bass. Treble. Function. That and a $38 BSR turntable and you had yourself a decent system We used to construct the speakers cabinets in high school wood shop. The school supplied the wood so all we had to do was find some speakers somewhere. Even though I had much nicer systems in later years I don't think any of them made me as happy as that one did.

You had a rant, ebay sellers are terrible... I had items not arriving, asked the seller for advice and he told me i would lose a case if i contacted paypal, he offered me the same items as half price replacements. I did open a case, won it and had my money back. I had others that never send the item :( other sellers go out and package items to be picked up by courier... I pay them extra for materials and time without them asking. That is just me i guess :)

I've both bought and sold on eBay... I've had good sellers and bad sellers. I remember one guy who packed a turntable very much like your seller did there -- just tossed in a box with no packing material. Only the turntable I bought was a much more delicate piece, and it was totally destroyed by the time I received it. Needless to say, that idiot got negative feedback from me.
Whenever I sell something on eBay, I always take pictures and/or video (if I feel video is necessary to convey the item's condition and/or quality). Then I package it *properly* and make sure it's ready to be shipped *immediately* upon receipt of payment. I *always* get it to the shipper (or have it picked up by the shipper) on the *first* business day after I have received payment. The seller you dealt with obviously didn't do any of that.
But I've shied away from selling on eBay -- their fees are too high, and they've been leaning harder and harder on sellers; screwing them over more and more. It's ridiculous. It *used* to be a great place to go to buy and sell stuff. Now I only use it as a last resort.

I've suffered similar experiences like this with some of "eBay's finest" sellers. One instance that I have commented to radiotvphononut before about involved a beautiful Pioneer PL-112D that was reduced to bits and pieces because the seller was an "expert packer". Nothing was tied down, minimalist packing and you can guess what that heavy aluminum platter did when it came loose. Now, I either return it or if I can still use it I refuse to give any kind of Feedback or go full negative. eBay does a really CRAPPY job policing it's sellers sometimes. Then, in other situations they get downright stupid with the decent ones. Point being, buy on eBay at your own risk, expecting the worst but hoping for the best.

Leave the ****** seller negative feedback! And while the dent is unfortunate, I am relieved that the poor packaging was confined to this Califone (which are built like tanks and can probably withstand a drop from a 5 story building) and it can be repaired without too much trouble. Imagine if seller happened to give you a rare early 50s bakelite Zenith, Philco or Motorola 3-channel portable instead - the whole thing would be too far damaged even for parts!

I had a brief brush with E-Bay, tried to bid on an old Beta VCR but got beaten by a higher bid(of course) but I'm not a fan of PayPal. I'd much prefer to pay for something by money order, the old fashioned tried and true method! My membership lapsed about a month ago, I haven't even so much as looked at E-Bay ever since.

Hey Radiotvphononut I really enjoy your videos and I'm sorry you're having so much trouble with shipping damage. I am one of the few left in Louisiana working as a TV repairman. Today its all about taking a 3 year old LED set apart and replacing the LED strips all because when a person buys one the manufacturer has the backlights set to full brightness. People never bother to go into the picture menu and run down the LED backlight level so they just are short lived oh well it keeps me busy. I can disassemble up to a 75" but 80" and bigger is too much for two rubber dent pullers to handle. When I first started doing LED replacements it was a great challenge but after about a few thousand I can talk about fishing and repairing at the same time

That seller is a loser. I've had the time issues with ebay sellers. When the seller lists the item, it should be ready to ship. Ridiculous to have to wait 3 weeks for an item. It's almost a pig in a poke with ebay sellers. I had an item that wasn't packed well at all and was damaged. I filed a claim anyway and received a refund. If you don't want the record that bad, you could give it a shot!

Always been Hillbilly Sellers on Ebay, and always will be. Even worse now with sellers trying to get astronomical prices for stuff that doesn't even work. I switched over to Amazon. Amazon is very, very strict. No Hillbillies allowed. No overcharging for postage. Silly handling fees not allowed. Used packing material and boxes not allowed. As a matter of fact, the package you received would have been enough for Amazon to automatically suspend the sellers account without any type of warning at all.

Hey radiotvphononut. There was an Elvis Presley album I once ordered off of ebay. It was titled "Always On My Mind". It was on purple vinyl. When I received it, it arrived with the record not in the album cover which also arrived with the record. Not only that but, the record itself was actually warped. I was pretty upset about it. So, I sent it back to the person who mailed the record & cover to me. And thankfully I got refunded for that record album. What do you think about that?

I asked a seller for partial refund after receiving a player all broken, but they would not budge. I stated they leave me no choice but to leave a negative. I left a negative, soon after, eBay removed it & sent ME a violation of terms, citing I threatened a negative. They said: "You need to say "Appropriate Feedback" in correspondence", or the eBay robots will cite you as the bad guy. Also if the seller refunds your money & still want the item, you're out of luck too.

According to the failed packaging, it had no newspaper, no bubble wrap and no popcorn foamed package piece. I don't like the way eBay sellers felt greedy. I bought stuff of eBay like a reel-to-reel tape, an 8-track tape, an 8mm movie for my projector and others and got a positive feedback. I recently got two blank 8-track tapes from Capitol Records and a 10 1/2 in. Reel-To-Reel tape which is ginormous, so I transferred it into 2 7 in. Reels separately to fill up the tape.

  • @Musicradio77Network

Nice rant! I enjoyed buying things from eBay, and it's not that bad. Last month, I've won some of the bids on getting more reel-to-reel tapes and more 8mm cartoons for my collection, and one of the item has listed as unpaid when the case was opened and they closed it and one of the seller blocked me for no reason. PayPal refused to make payment for 3 days. I don't know the issue with that one. All I can do is contact one of those sellers to get a payment as of late. I have eBay, Amazon and Etsy, all three of my accounts to buy or purchase items, but I have to be aware of these sellers when I can get many of the items that I don't have.

Got bit very badly several years ago by a seller that didn't know to tie the tonearm down, put in adequate packing or remove the counter weight from the tone arm on a Pioneer PL-112D turntable. It came off in transit and broke the tonearm right at the swivel mount then proceeded on to break the plastic dust cover in several places. When I opened the box there was very little salvageable of the turntable outside of the base, platter and motor. It took forever to get a refund from the seller and I had to get eBay involved before he finally gave in and refunded my money. I was fortunate enough to find another PL-112D and in conversation with the seller told him what had happened, minus the name. He assured me that he would never ship anything in a condition that it might get damaged and he was right! I have had that turntable now for several years and it still looks and plays like the day it was built. It all depends on the attitude of the seller and whether or not they are just looking for a fast buck.

I just purchased a device, which was listed as "working". It was working alright, but delivered complete with badly leaked batteries, something spilled in the keypad, and thrown loosely in the nearest size priority mail box. It was only $5 minus the exact shipping, so I had fun cleaning out the mess, resoldering the battery compartment wire that was corroded. So he/she got 2 star DSRs for the unstated condition issues though.

I try never to buy electronics on ebay, for just this reason.I was lucky enough to score a 1959 Magnavox Concert Grand for $150,on my otherwise very overpriced local Craigslist. Those of you who know what a Concert Grand is,know just what an incredible deal this is.The problem was,the previous owner had replaced the record changer with a lower end Voice of Music from 1957.So it was off to ebay.I found a replacement record changer of the right model for a decent price, and did a Buy It Now.As with your Califone,my changer took six weeks to arrive, from West Virginia to New Mexico. When it came it was in the largest Priority Mail box, with no packing material, other than a couple of newspaper sections laid flat on the top,and very little tape. The box was crushed about a third of the way down, but there was enough of a cushion of air to prevent the changer from being broken.Good thing those Collaros are built like a tank.I left neutral feedback, and never heard from the seller.

The metal speaker grille is bent along an edge, which indicates that a "fair degree of inertia" would have been necessary to have inflicted the damage present. There should be some retort possible - other than negative feedback. Ebay should, and must include a category for "quality of packing and shipment", possibly separating the category from the "ebay seller's rating", which is a joke to begin with.

I have bought a lot of items on Ebay since 2005. Most people have the decency to send a message to you informing you of their planned shipping date, usually within 3-4 days. It really irritates me when careless sellers cant be bothered to ship within 3 days or at all without having to open a claim. I bought a beautiful late 40's white Belmont tube radio with no cracks on the cabinet.Due to sloppy packing and one postcard sized piece of bubblewrap; the radio arrived with the cabinet broken in shards of about 12 pieces.two tubes smashed and scattered in the box. I was very upset. The seller had affordable radios but could care less about what happened to them in transit to others.this was probably what happened to you. Definately give them bad feedback due to their own stupidity and negligence. You will be protecting honest people like yourself and others from such an experience.

I read a lot of the other comments on this after watching your video.
I think I might have it worse than most. Your machine, being a durable school type player got off lucky. I have had the occasional miracle with inadequate to no packing come through mostly unscathed, but more typical would be some packing and the player coming through with multiple dents in the wood, in the case of a changer, spindle gouging its way through the top cover from the inside and or bent/ broken off, case joints unglued, wood splitting, plastic cases cracked and broken, hinges and latches mangled or broken, motor mounts broken, internal heavy parts like transformer mounts bent, broken or dislodged tubes from their sockets, countless little screws and brackets wandering around the inside of the case.
This is a composite, but I have seen one or more of these problems on almost everything I have gotten from eBay. Rarely do I get something perfect that has also survived shipping. I blame both inadequate packing and the shippers. When I sell something I try to pack to prevent damage in the imagined scenario of a 40 pound item being tossed / dropped 10' onto a concrete floor, on a corner. Which I am sure all carriers do especially with items marked fragile this side up.

i don't know all the details of how Ebay works, but I'd think they could set it up so that you sent the payment to them and they wouldn't release the money to the seller until they received a tracking number. The moron who sent that record player isn't hard to figure out. The reason he didn't send it initially is because he wanted to see if anybody complained. If nobody complains he keeps the money and the record player. My cousin whose a degenerate gambler does the same thing. • @rdm.2558

Yea, you're talking about 'fulfillment by Amazon'. This is where brand sellers are able to have their inventory shipped to Amazons warehouses, stored there, and Amazon employees do all the work. The sellers never see or touch the item once an order is placed. I agree, the inside packing leaves a little to be desired, and boxes sized better. However, all of the items are brand new and shipped in their original retail boxes which pretty much secure the item to start with. So claims are few.
To avoid the ludicrous shipping and handling fees Ebay sellers charge, Amazon determines your shipping based on item size and weight. It is written in cement. Nearly every time, what Amazon charges is only half of the actual shipping, and the seller is responsible for the actual, full amount. This is why a 9 pound item on Amazon costs $8 to ship while Ebay sellers charge $18 to $30.
The Free Shipping (Prime) is only available to sellers using Fulfillment by Amazon. Even though the shipping is Free to buyers, the sellers account is charged the actual amount of the shipping. So, somebody does pay.

Really, Amazon charges the seller? Wow! I buy stuff from Am that says sold by Am, and not packed worth a sh*t, boxes 10 times the size what is really needed. I spend so much time shopping around to save a few dollars that my time becomes worth very little, but I like the hunt

"Sold by Amazon", yes, they do have their own retail market. They are pretty smart about it, too. Let's assume you're a new retail seller. Let's assume you and 7 other guys across the country decide to introduce a brand new chrome plated widget never before seen. If during the first several months you guys sell 250,000 of these widgets, Amazon will jump in, buy 10,000, undercut your price, and drop all of you so far down the rankings that only the most seasoned buyers will know how to find you.
"Fulfilled by Amazon" is different. See, you can have all of your widgets shipped to an Amazon warehouse. Once sold, Amazon puts it in an oversized box with little packing material (like you said) and mails it. You never touch your widget. However, you are charged the full amount of postage AND a small fee for the amount storage space that widget took up in the warehouse.
Regardless the faults, in the end, the buyer is the big winner. Either Free or Very Low shipping. Amazon will not allow price gouging like you see on Ebay.

Don't buy things prone to breakage. That's my rule. My other rule is, don't buy something so homely that you'll never be able to resell it. Third rule is, always follow the first two rules. -------- I'll bet that record player had that wow and flutter when it left the factory in 1967.

All I can tell you is my items are profession packed. Many times an unscrupulous buyer files a claim " not as described " eBay makes me take it back and then I get an empty box in the mail. One time I got a box of pee gravel instead of a carburetor

Brian Smith Concerning sending this record player back - I'd have to pay the return shipping, as well as likely eat the shipping that I paid to have it shipped to me in the first place. By the time that was all said and done, I still wouldn't come out on top and I'd have no record player. It's easier just to fix the thing and never do any business with that seller again. Also, I don't sell on ebay because of all the "buyer protection" crap. The last thing I need is to sell an item, think it's a done deal, and then have a dishonest buyer file a bogus claim against me. That would result in ebay snatching money away from me and forcing me to accept a return that could very well end up being a box of rocks. As for me, I'm not a dishonest buyer and all I expect out of ebay sellers is some effort in packing, as well as prompt shipment. Pretty much anything I buy through ebay is bought with the assumption that it will need a full restoration.

It annoys me when sellers write "THIS WAY UP, FRAGILE" on their packaging. By doing so they're trying to offload some of their responsibility for packing correctly onto the handlers.
Any time I pack something I do it based on the assumption (certainty) that the item will spend some of its time upside down, it'll be shaken and possibly dropped.
The example is among the worst I've seen but someone once sent me a Rega turntable and a pair of speakers in a box exactly the same size as the contents. In his message to me he said "of course I've packed it well". Naturally he blamed the carriers for the damage. Fuckwit.

they might think twice next time. i see there 100 percent is now in the 60 percent range. with so few sales it is going to take a long while to drag that into the 90s, if infact anyone buys as they see such a low percentage. terrible seller deserves not to sell.
