Taylor: let's write one of the most depressing songs of my career and name it ' HaPpiNeSs'
There are a lot of Gatsby references in this song! "I hope she'll be a beautiful fool" is a direct reference of Daisy at the end of the book where she was talking about her daughter; because Daisy was somewhat smart enough in the era where women were mistreated, so she became unhappy and she wished her daughter would be a fool to not see the problems in society. "Green light of forgiveness" refers to the iconic flickering green light that symbolizes Gatsby's yearning for Daisy. The word "reinvention" as Gatsby is all about American dream, and "great divide" about West Egg and East Egg division... As a language major, she got me geeking out with this album omg.
Happiness is written like a poem. Taylor is really a gifted genius songwriter.
This song was the last song she wrote before the album release. Literally like the same week. It's about her friend Abigail who went through a divorce.

this is lyrically one of my favourites on this album if not my fav, I love so many lines like "after giving you the best I've had tell me what to give after that all you want from me now is the *green light of forgiveness* , you haven't met *the new me* yet and *I think she'll give you that* " the "honey when I'm above the trees I see it for what it is " it's just like hey when I am seeing it from where I'm staying I'll curse your name and everything but when I look at it all from an external point of view I see it for what it is and then she proceeded to explain how they both screwed up at some point. And the truth is in most relationships there isn't necessarily a bad person, we just stop seeing eye to eye or we grow in different directions and the letting go when it's not working anymore becomes very very hard.
Honestly, I don't think there was anyone in the wrong in the relationship. It sounds like a good relationship that lasted for several years and sadly ended. Both are heartbroken, in pain, they both hurt each other, but not purposefully. It's easy to try to paint their past as a bad versus good, but the reality was it was really good for a while until it wasn't anymore. So there was happiness there, but there will be happiness in the future too.
you know what, if there's 10 minutes version of 'happiness', i'm gonna love it no doubt.
This is one of her best songs ever. I see it as a continuation to My Tears Ricochet. The pain is real and palpable but it doesn’t erase the good times and the memories we have made with her from the beginning of her career. I cry every time I listen to this song.
This is my absolute favorite song of hers and I love EVERYTHING this woman does. This song got me through a breakup this year and have always loved her deep, poetic lyrics. A brilliant writer. ❤️

I think My Tears Ricochet and Happiness belong together. They can be seen as fictional stories or as about her old record label. The seven years in heaven are her seven albums before she got a new record deal. What amazes me still is that My Tears Ricochet was the fist song she wrote for Folklore and Happiness was the last for Evermore. So much groth. Like you said. :)
Just a few songs off Folklore and Evermore are about her personal life. Like Invisible String or Long Story Short. Most of them fit in more than one setting and I really like that about these albums. There is so much room for interpretation. :)
I heard that happiness was about Taylor’s close friend going through a divorce/ended relationship. However it’s interesting the different perspectives people hear
