The problem was in the output voltage capacitors of the charger, and when you injected voltage from your powersupply, the damaged capacitors were charged at the output voltage of the machine’s charger, so the charger returned to work, but if you left it for a while without power, the malfunction will return. Those damaged capacitors must be replaced. Thank you.
If you look closely from 0:49, you will see after rocking the switch a few times the status led actually comes on. The switch might not get used in the shop it come from and is always on, maybe bad internal contacts in the switch 🤷♂️
@@rossphillipson3413 oh yeah, at the last times he rocks it it actually comes on, haven't noticed it until I rewatched it. good call there. but even so those 11.3v don't seem right to me lol
Low, fluctuating voltage on the output (11.2V and fluctuating) also points to damaged output capacitors, although, they had no visible marks or issues. Worth investigating/replacing.
My first ever electrical repair was my mother's hair dryer, when I was about 10 years old. It did not heat up and the fan did not run. I opened the case (not having a clue what I was doing), gave it a severe looking at, blew out some dust and screwed it back together. Lo and behold, it worked and continued to work for another 20 years! That was the day I realised I had magic fingers! 🤣🤣🤣

I had the same effect with a bluray player. At the customers house it was not working. I brought it home, took it apart and started measuring. The thing worked. I gave back. Two months later customer said it's not working. I took it home, took it apart and it worked. I resoldered most connections and for now it is working .... :)
Hi Sorin, the simplest and safest way to to open those kind of boxes is to use gasoline on the joint part which will weaken the plastic and melt the glue. and after 30 sec you can open it by your bare hands and without tools. 🙂
A few years back at work, we had a ceiling mounted data projector in the main school hall that was dead. We had to get our scaffold tower to get to it. My boss was about to spend £2,000+ to replace it as it's a very high lumens model that projects on to a very large screen on the stage. I said before you send off the order for a replacement let me take a look... well I opened it up, took it all apart and had a good look around and could see nothing wrong so I put it all back together, plugged it in and low and behold! It was working again and I had done nothing other than take it apart and put it back together again! It went back up the scaffolding tower, connected back up to the ceiling bracket and it has been fine ever since!!
I would definitely have done a few test prints to ensure the PSU was outputting sufficient power to drive the thermal head, but agree the switch seemed to have been the primary issue. Whilst the device was open its worth taking out the printer board to inspect the switch and for dust/dirt underneath.
I have had so many jobs where I had to fix something fully functional lol I usually will hold it for a day or so if I can to thoroughly test it and make sure that there's nothing wrong with it.
I work at a rather small company and we have a couple of these laying around in the storage. The repair is definitely more expensive than getting one from classifieds.
I think i saw a few bad solder joints... 8:30 at least the middle pin of the transistor, if not all three 8:32 the big one looks cracked to me 8:46 the soldering straight below the 'R22' marking looks bad, the one left to the marking also... In this case i would resolder the through hole components to be on the safe side.
When he says Dial Up port what he is really saying is RJ11 port - when you are Sorin (and my) age you'll remember first seeing these ports with Dial-Up Internet so that's what guys like us will always call them instead of RJ11 which of course can be used for anything you want an not just Dial-Up Internet!
You're not the only one ;). I have calls from garages, even private customers which are all electronics repairs as we're the only electronics repair shop in our area. So, we have even now 4moms Mamaroo ;) in repair.
I put little IPA alcohol on the middle where the bonding is. Wait 2-3min. After that i cut / hit the 4 corners with paper knife. Usually the adapter gets open nice and i can glue it back lice factory.
I think you missed something this time. Sure, the caps are the usual suspects but: The 5th time you flip the switch ( video time 0:54 ) you can see the green led turning on, and the red light light start flashing. Then, you flip the switch one more time (6th time) and the same thing happens again: the green light turns on, and the red light light starts flashing. You just fail to notice because your bench lights are very bright. I believe that you have a dirty switch. It needs some good old loving contact spray. My second guess it that you have a dry solder under the switch. Of course you could check the caps with an ECR meter but in this case i believe that there is no need to replace them. As always, I enjoy your videos! PS as @dreaso suggested, since you already cracked opened the PSU case, you could resolder the through hole components. Its a one-minute job.
I got some weird stuff for repair. Usually the customers don't want to pay the big buck for specialized service repair. They come to us hoping to pay 10 cents. They should always have a backup in case the main printer fails but they are too cheap to have one a s a backup. Looks like all over the world customers are the same.
Refuse to repair see how they beg you for help, say drop on you knees for a discount etc. Watch the sheep in action. You can offer free vaccines with unknown content too.
@@juliusvalentinas Hahaha, don't worry, that's exactly what I do pretty often. It may about broken copper wire inside the cord. if a device not working i always check the power cable first, then adaptor output value without any cable moving. You can catch the broken wire while problem live. But if you move the cables, copper wires may start to connection and you cant catch it beacuse of plastic coats.
The boxes, like this, I opens using the hummer. Position of the box should be the same as on video, when you using the screwdriver. better to do it on the flore or heavy stable surface.
Weird intermittent fault maybe? I'd replace the startup cap typically 47 or 33uf 25v and just give it him back. Customer is the best tester. (and the worst)
I fix stuff like this all the time. Customer says Xyz is not working. I show up and ask the customer show me what isn't working and like magic its fixed. its the positive energy we give off. or the device knows I'm not afraid to bring the Hammer out.
Of course, to begin with I do NOT like receiving "unknown" devices... if a customer arrives with something of this type I go and see it (courtesy), I tell him to call or go to the authorized service center of that brand. ...generally, the client gets upset (angry) when I tell him this; Then I promise to review it, let you know that there are no schematic diagrams and that I have no spare parts for your unusual device. Finally I ask for 10 days for the review WITHOUT obligation but with the understanding that you will pay minimally for the diagnosis. Alone I reflect and tell myself that it is an "opportunity" to learn something new and how curiosity always kills me! I'll have to stay a little longer at the end of the day. Greetings.
the best way to open glued power supplies is to use a big knife, place it across the middle glued section and hit it with a wood hammer, like the one for meat. it will perfectly crack open. the "dial up port" is actually a cash drawer kick port. ive been repairing cash registers/epos since 1979 to test it, put an 57mm roll in it, then press and hold the feed button while you turn the main power on (it will perform a self test) dry joints on the rocker switch are common - as are the output capacitors on the power supply - (these cause the printing to be feint) trust me - it will be back (my money is on the output capacitors on the psu) you also didnt test the print
Feint print could also be the thermal head, after replacement print darkness is back to normal. In these cases do you still think there could be a capacitor issue?
It is a weakness and consumption of the output capacitor. But this capacitor was afraid that you would take it out in a brutal way, as you do to others like it, so it returned to work again, lol.😂

Ask the owner how he tested it before he brought it for repair? My guess is he tried different outlets but never checked the cable going into the printer. I am guilty of always doing the brue force repair only to find out that I forgot to check the fuse first or even switch on the thing. Or worse, to even test the outlet for power.
This is the perfect job for the customer who doesn't want to pay a lot. 😊

I second you on that, plus the voltage at 11.32v its a bit low for a smps 12V IMO... definitely something wrong with the psu I would say
