  • Seeing through walls is no longer the stuff of science fiction! From light field cameras to super slow motion, we're able to grab more information from our digital images than ever before. This next generation of camera technology is going to give us what amounts to extra sensory perception.
We want to know your thoughts. What do you think is more important - having a camera that has all these amazing capabilities, or your sense of privacy? Leave us a comment and tell us what you think!

Silicon crystals heated to high tempetatures and aligned just right let you see through walls without anything held up to the naked eye, even through steel walls.
It's an old school technology called ...

      It's not possible.
I mean, sure... you could say _"to do it legally"_ you need a license... but a lot of that technology is now home-brewable, so legislation is not likely to be effective.
Home-brewable privacy busters include microwave 'through-wall' imaging, internal audio/video bugs, remote/external laser-based bugs and even hacked IoT. Curtains are particularly interesting as they provide almost zero privacy. Lenses exist to 'reverse' door spyholes.. Cameras and mics exist that are so thin they can go through cracks... they can be fed in from next door, through roofing, or from beneath your house. Optical bugs can be snaked in through plumbing from anywhere... the water mains... the sewer... open grey-water downpipes. And entering a persons home covertly to black-bag the place is usually so easy it's not even funny..
I know this, because my group HAS many such tools. We deploy them against large corporations as part of our full-spectrum penetration testing... and we're around 98% effective at ultimately cracking them wide open. The attacker always has the advantage.
But who cares? If you carry a smartphone, then clearly privacy really isn't that important to you - convenience trumps it.
This will sound like a strange statement, but... if you travel more than 3 miles to work (or take the underground) - I could potentially compromise your smartphone, within just a few days. And, when I say 'compromise' ... I mean a fully breached device that lets me watch/hear you even when you think you've turned it off. And, that's in addition to all the privacy breaching you do voluntarily, via apps.
Even better... I can trick ALL the devices in your home, into connecting to a rogue wi-fi point in a parked car down the street. Simply by emulating your SSID whilst transmitting a frequency-hopping frame kill on your original channel. You'd be surprised just how easy it is to then profile all the programs checking for updates (or bearing vulnerabilities) and install a rootkit on your system - and your AV won't even whimper.
But it's not all high-tech. For example, using relatively simple techniques I could call a person... and start a chain of events during which they would voluntarily give me their passwords and security questions, for their online banking. EVEN if they follow all the best security practices... in fact, ESPECIALLY if they do. And I won't even have to ask! : ) The truth is, you really don't need cutting edge technology to destroy someones security and privacy... and you don't have to rely on them being stupid. This works just as well (or even better) on paranoid lifelong security specialists.
The truth is, much your privacy is already gone by voluntary agreement. But...
.... attract the attention of the state - or of a motivated malicious actor - and you can kiss any remaining notion of security goodbye.
Legislation really doesn't do much. In fact, most of this stuff is already legislated against... or is covered by prior law.

A camera using helicenes would function in UV, visible, and IR ranges, have a constant resolution of around 3 Megapixels/micrometer^2, and a stack of helicene layers between graphene sheets seeing in sixteen different frequencies of light ranging from UV to IR would only be ten nanometers in height. [n]helicene consists of n ortho-linked benzene rings. So it's a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that is a nanospring that absorbs a specific frequency of light. If I was a robot, this is what I would use for vision. :P

I live in 'housing', and I know someone is in my attic. The attic door is in a different apt that is joined to all apts. This makes it clear how they know the exact room I'm in. They are watching only me. if I have another family member to come in the room with me to listen, then the intruder is very very quite.

  • @krazeone8216

My downstairs neighbor is spying on me with some kind of camera and I am so upset that my family's privacy is being violated. Everyone doesn't believe me and every time I try to explain to someone I get told there is no way. Well I set up a recording device that only does audio and it was in my room and it was recording of me and my wife being intimate. Well I checked the recording and for some reason i picked up the downstairs neighbors talking about and laughing and making all kinds of embarrassing comments about us. The were clearly describing what it was that we were doing and they said my name and wife's name more than once. So I know for a fact and still have the proof that they were indeed watching us through the walls or the floor. And since then I have been doing things on purpose to see if they can see what it is that I'm doing and sure enough they do. The building is really old so all the walls and floors are thin but in my room there was no way they could have seen me not even through my windows so they do have some type of new or modified device that allows them to spy on me.

I would rather think he can either hear you or if he knows visual details then he has some hidden camera installed somewhere. Cameras that can see through walls are kinda non-existent. And if they do exist, I doubt some douchebag can get his hands on one so he can spy on his neighbor's day to day activity.

  • @garychap8384
    @garychap8384 Рік тому +1

We can already see people, through walls, by using microwave imaging... and that's far simpler and cheaper. In fact, you can even homebrew this stuff.
It's already being used in military contexts alongside ground-penetrating radio systems that can detect movements in tunnels or ducts - a la, the movie "Aliens". They recently caught a Russian saboteur team using tunnels to sneak into Bakhmut, detected them enroute and blew the tunnels - all using relatively simple ground penetrating motion sensing.
Truth is, if I wanted to - I could headshot my next door neighbour through the wall, from my bedroom. This is where we're at now ; )

See thru walls ? Rudimentary put. We have tinkered doing it with sound waves. An old ultrasound machine or any device that puts out vibrations where aspects can be modified. Then use a decoder that can decipher how the waves bounce off objects on the other side. Still an experimental toy but it has promise. We are having a challenge with feedback & echo. RF emitters in the Ka or V-bands may hold more promise..

Well actually the camera that captures photons takes about 5-10 to take the "slow motion" shot. Single light of light is shot though the coke bottle thousands of times. The camera takes a photo each time with a nano second more delay than the previous shot. Then the photos is combined into one film, but the whole process takes hours including post processing. So yes, unless you are driving like a granny the camera system for a car will not work.

Privacy. Even though its well established that privacy is a joke in america. Although, there has to be a counter to this type of tech. Something like putting wallpaper with one side aluminum foil and the other side a nice design on all your walls. Something to that effect.

What do I ask for when I want to buy these features? Who sells them? I don't really need photon but if I wanted to buy it how much and where? I think privacy is important but so do I believe home security is more important for me, I am not into spying on other people, but seeing around the corner, capturing a blur might have helped arrest my assailant during a home invasion.

    Privacy,
when we think about it, however the technology is more important the moment we make the decision whether to buy/use it. :)

Privacy is very important to keep, in America. There needs to be laws that put technology in a place where it is used wisely, with a court order, and stays with in the confines of not going against the U.S. Constitution, when the suspect is not guilty at the time of search. Innocent until proven guilty, in a court of law.

I would prefer my privacy. If government perfects a system like this there will never be privacy in your home vehicle anywhere
