    Brad, the hammer is indicative of a cobblers hammer on display at a museum in Bend Oregon. Don't remember the date they had on theirs, but had to have come across with the settlers in the 1800's or so. Great finds, wish we were able to detect where I live without being hassled by the local gestapo.

      Ray C. My thought too. Farriers don't use a claw to remove nails. They use a pliers type tool, at least modern ones do.

    • @MrJento
      @MrJento 4 роки тому

      burrichgrrl57 you are correct. That is a cobblers hammer. The claw being used to turn a clasp rather than pull a nail. A farriers hammer is similar in that it is small. Usually about 10-12 ounces. But its claw is narrow and somewhat pointed. The cobblers claw is broad and square.
      The farrier drives a nail through the pritchel holes in the shoe at an angle through the wall of the hoof so as to avoid the quick of the hoof. The nail exits the hoof wall about an inch above the sole. The hammer is reversed and the point of the nail “wrung-off” with a twist and pull motion to form a clasp. The hammer face is then used to close and tighten the clasp pulling the shoe firmly to the hoof. Removal involved cutting the clasp with a small chisel edged tool called....a clasp cutter! Then the farriers pincers pulled the shoe clasp less nails and all off the hoof.

    Your hammer is a very early iron cobblers hammer. The square profile and flat heavy claw is the tell. It was used to build up leather heels on shoes. The heel was a stack of leather “slugs” nailed tightly together. The cobblers nail was more like a long thin stout wire. It had no formed head nor a point and was square in cross section. The hammer claw was used to twist a small J-hook on the end of the nail. Called a “clasp”. As in to clasp a nail. This served as the head. The leather slugs were pierced with an awl and stacked on the nails. The hammer drove the slugs down tight. Then the sole blank was added. The claw again turned a clasp and the nail was driven down rolling the clasp in and making a tight solid heel attached to a sole. On heavy shoes the sole layers and the upper might also be nailed together. Nails being more durable than stitched welt construction. Fine shoes (slippers) were stitched. Common shoes (clogs) were nailed. In the 1880’s hob-nails came into use. Your hammer predates those.

    Gets you thinking about how the cufflinks ended up so far apart, maybe one fell off the shirt and the other stayed on until the person walked across the property where it fell off and was found 250 years later. Amazing stuff, thanks for taking us on the journey, it’s worth the monthly donation.
