Update -- I really don't paint only with natural light anymore. I think that was a bit of a "purest" or "romantic" idea. I now use a combo of natural and artificial light so I have more consistent light throughout the day.

Great video, really enjoyed it. My studio is a fifth of yours I think, but I'm not complaining -- I've spent years painting from my kitchen! My biggest struggle at the moment is that I paint in a variety of media -- watercolours, acrylics, alcohol inks, acrylic inks and oils. I'd love to have a different station for each media (one day!!) but my studio is tiny. I find it gets messy and chaotic very quickly because of this problem, all the different media falling over each other. And a chaotic space leads to a chaotic mind, at least in my case. And yes, I also have an ironing board and bookshelf in my studio, as well as lots of textiles paraphernalia for when I was a creative embroidery student! Goodness, its sounding worse and worse as I type! I need an interior designer to help me out I think!
Thank you so much for this video. Don’t worry, you seem like a lovely person! Would mind doing a more in depth video telling us how you store your artworks? That would be really interesting! Thank you.

thanks. I too searched and searched for a video like this and could not find it so I made one myself. lol. Also check out my "30 Artist Tips" video....it continues many of the same themes.
Hi Zoe, I'm in total agreement with your comments. I LOVE Chases' considered and deliberate approach to his studio layout. I am, alas, so indolent and disorganised I could never accomplish. Quindi, I'm sure we both would/could develop further in our creativity by following his example. May I recommend researching a couple of vid. to you which may help your studio success; the English artists : F. Bacon and L Freud!
@@bencellini4200 Yes. Check the pix of Bacon's studio. Then check the art !!!! Everybody is different and has different needs. Chase's art is beautiful, but I'd feel trapped and choked in such a stark environment.
It's funny to me that you expressed concern about your personality on the video. Before I saw your comment, I was wondering how I could comment on this very thing without sounding stalkery. Lol I thought your personality and the way you presented the information was the best part! You seemed genuine, and avoided the irritating music and over the top enthusiasm that some others use. Good information. I'd love to see more videos, maybe of how you work? Thanks!
I'm a big fan of architecture and have a lot of architect friends. My career really took off when Gensler in LA sponsored a huge 40 painting solo show in 2008 (when they are at their Santa Monica location). At the opening, attended by 500+, two art dealers offered me representation. I still work with both of them today.
This may be one of the best videos I've ever seen on UA-cam. Listening to you describe your art studio and everything you've built that is highly functional is a master class in design, function, lighting, color neutrality, ventilation and organization. You are inspiring to me as I'm daydreaming about building a workshop. Thank you for taking the time to film and share this.
I am redoing the insulation and drywall in my studio, which means I had to move out completely. So now I get to re-think the lighting and what I’m going to bring back in. I really appreciate your tips! It never occurred to me to go all white. I’m going to have to ponder that one. I have wheels on almost everything. I love having rolling carts filled with different types of supplies so I can roll them up to my work area, depending on what I’m doing at the time. One is all of my colored pencils and current sketchbooks, for example. IKEA used to sell the best little clip on lights with really long cords. I’m glad I stocked up because I can’t find them anymore. So useful. And I’m going to create a book from my art. Great idea. Shutterfly often has discounts on little photo books.

Wow, those are such kind and flattering words! thank you. In May I'm doing another "artist tips" sort of video which will be the last of that sort. Very practical and informative. I am 75 and have never really ever had a studio for my art. I am currently retired and living in Estonia, converting our old barn into my studio. My wife will be retiring next year and I have to move my art out of the house in order to escape the vacuum cleaner. Your tips and comments have been a big help. Sir your art studio is just so amazing, I loved the way you explained every single details of the essentials. This was the best video on studio essentials I've found so far. I especially loved the view outside your studio, it is so calm and relaxing.
Oh Chase, you did a fine job with this tour - I felt as if I was in the room with you and you were talking to me like a good friend! In a few months, after my roommate leaves, I plan to transfer my small corner art studio (currently in my bedroom) into the second master suite. I’m so excited because now I will have most everything in one bigger room with good lighting and a bathroom!
I also like to have a mirror hung opposite where I usually work so I can look at the artwork backwards, it really helps me notice things from a fresh perspective
Hey Chase, I’m a full time artist from New York City for 10 years now and in the city it is such a luxury to have some space to work with, to have high ceilings that sometimes I have to mix everything together like personal/art/office all in one space and sometimes it’s just a mess and it is such a relief to see that it’s possible to have all of these things organized and separated to actually have a view of the mountains to actually have a storage nearby and to have a natural light . I know that being a painter is a crazy ton of work and you go through evolutions of the work space. Thank you so much for spending your time to share your amazing studio it is extremely well organized !!

Thank you again for all you do to help us new artist have a wonderful day.
@@cliffdariff74 in a way that's exactly what I tried to say by saying there is an emptiness. of course there are marvelous things out there in life that can fill our souls and they do it, for sure. Maybe you got confused because of the use of the word "sadly", no sadness in this regard, I used the word as an intensifier. I just tried to say that, in my mind, (I'm not an erudite) there is a kind of vacuum, existential emptiness I feel personally on life and has nothing to do with depression or anything like that, but for a strange reason (again, not from an erudite) art... Art suits perfectly and can take a life to plenitude. Of course we have to feel relatively ok about our lives in general before expecting art, or anything alike for that matter, to give us a purpose. Sorry if I can't explain further, English is not my mother tongue.
Wonderful again, thank you Chase! 💖 I had one of the tables built the exact size of a ping pong table, and painted it blue. I use it for art, and when tired, we play table tennis on it. 😀
Hi Chase. Just wanted to say, you have the BEST, informational videos for artist. You provide ideas for functionality, as well as for business. Thank you!
Hello, your video was so helpful. I was stuggling with a cluttered studio and not creating but now I will be able to make a lot of changes. Thank you so much for your guidance! Hugs from Montana
Well thought out space, especially the white easels and rolling tables. Best of all the video lead me to your paintings on your website!!! I will go back again and again. Now if I can just expand the little painting area in my bedroom. Thanks.
Thank you so much for your generous tips on studio organization! I need to reorganize my modest home studio to accommodate a series of larger work and your videos are making me excited to optimize my space. Love how creatively you modify existing materials to meet your needs. Instant sub!
Thank you very much, I really like the way you've organised the space. I'm starting to reorganise everything in my studio and I've found lots of good ideas. I also like putting labels on all the drawers and storage boxes, it saves a lot of time and peace of mind.
Thank you for this video! It's fantastic. My husband recently mentioned that we need to build a studio for me. So I'm greedily soaking up all this great information, watched your 30 tips video first. My studio will likely only be 10 x 12 so thank you for the put everything on casters idea. Visual noise can be a distraction so limiting content to art supplies and painting everything white may really help me as well. Thanks again.
Chase, I met an artist in Provincetown, MA who stored his paintings in a similar fashion as you, but set up in such a way that he could turn them as in pages in a book.
Thank you for this video. You've addressed many issues I've not even considered. Maybe I've missed it, but have you ever done a video on how you finish off your paintings to get them ready for sale? Also, do you frame them? No worries about not smiling in your video. You still seem very relaxed and many of us appreciate your sincerity in trying to help others. I thoroughly enjoyed the video and will rewatch it again when it comes time to set up my studio. Thanks again.
Karla --- I used to frame a lot but I find framing problematic.... they would often get damaged by galleries. Now I leave that to the buyer of the work. I do paint the sides gray to get rid of the bight white of the gesso on the sides. Glad you enjoyed the video. I'm going to do another one of general artist tips in about a month.
Hi Chase. Your studio setup is excellent. Very spacious and organized. It is luxury to create a studio of this size. I am still searching the option to store my oil paintings. Best wishes. Rajiv Desai
I appreciate so much your walking through your studio speaking to the whys and what nots. I am actually at this moment organizing my studio at home which is a shared space shelf and furniture wise. I am excited to see everything on wheels as that’s what I’ve created all except my table which I now want on wheels as well. I also am storing canvases and papers in the same room which is all I can do for now finding a place for everything will be my challenge . You have given me many great ideas, so thank you!
I'm so glad the video was helpful for you Denise. When I had a small apartment I turned the little bedroom into my studio and slept where the kitchen table should have been..... it all evolves. Keep at it!
I finally found this video. I don't think there is any other video out there with such genuine information. I have been searching for this info and found most of what I want on your channel. Thank you so much Chase, honestly. Also, I love how simply and humbly you share your experience and tips and tricks. I am preparing my art studio now, and I am so excited.
What a wonderful studio tutorial, Chase! I'm in process of moving my wee Atelier from a 7-8' "dining nook" to the 10 × 10' end of my living room, and appreciate these helpful tips. I'm grateful to have a large easel, a gift from a friend who studied it up before passing it on, as it had a tendency to drop! (Thankfully it's been steady for me!)
Mr. Langford, I just stumbled across your UA-cam video, Creating a Great Art Studio, and am thrilled! Thank you for such detailed and essential information. I'm still working at an 8-5 job (it feeds my art!) but am making plans to paint full time. I'm prepping my home studio to make this leap within one year. Your ideas have stimulated my thinking, especially for necessary , functional furniture. THANK YOU!
Thank you, Chase. Though I’ve been painting for years, we just moved into a house that provides a dedicated studio space. (about 500 sq feet!) Your thoughts have been really helpful. My challenge is budgeting for flat files. :)
Thank you for this, I really like your all-white, I'd like that too - and good light, plus I need QUIET: I live in a rented place too near centre of town with no noise (or temperature) insulation and it's exhausting hearing neighbours, road works, everyone's garden work, plumbing, cars & trucks, shouting, I live in France so men playing boules too CLACK-CLACK - sometimes until 1a.m. ... Huge admiration for the things you've made or changed and wheels = yes, so long as they don't move too easily just by nudging/using them. I love your work and it's really interesting to see your studio = thank you very much, I'm so envious of it: mine is chaos and because of my brain injury I can't organise it properly!
Hi Jenny. My gosh your place sounds challenging. Can you play some soft music to help distract from the mayhem outside? You can get wheels that have a locking mechanism to keep them fixed in place when you desire. Best wishes to you.
May I suggest ear plugs or wifi headphones...I found that I got used to the earplugs quickly. Once I'm in the zone, I don't notice them. I used to have to use the earplugs because I lived in a busy household.
@@wwcreations1 thank you for your reply. I use earplugs every night (they hurt my ears = maybe I need expensive moulded-to-my-ears ones?) but can still hear way too much: since my brain injury my hearing has become very acute. My head is super-sensitive too (and injured neck) and I think I'd have big trouble wearing headphones and would feel cut off in case there was something I needed to hear like the telephone. But I'm glad they work for you, personally I really need to live in a noise & temperature-insulated flat (the walls+ here aren't built properly and temperature varies between 6C and 33C!) and in a quiet area.
Great tip with the cups holder! However most other tips are geared towards a large studio, my space is only 9 x 7 feet LW and 7 ft high. Oh and wheels on everything is great too, thanks 👍
Hi, thanks for all of the tips! When it comes to easels, since I’m currently looking for one, I wonder if you might know how much of the extra width of the canvas or panel can stick out from the sides when placed on the easel, without it losing its grip. The easel I have in mind is the Mabef M07, a medium easel, which has a canvas holder of about 60 centimeters long. I wonder if it can take canvases or panels almost twice its size in width. Thank you!
I'm a bit of a daredevil and have had 9 foot wide (274 cm) canvases on a medium size easel like the one you mentioned. But I do have a larger easel I use most of the time. Hope this helps.
Thank you Chase - I appreciate how organized and functional your studio is - mine is much tighter since I have less space to work with - perhaps one day I might get to a bigger and more productive space - thanks for sharing
Most artists usually need more space, myself included. You saw my studio neat and tidy for the shoot, not when I've got multiple projects in full gear. But I am most grateful for what I have and have been able to make it "bigger" with some of the strategies I mentioned in the film. Best wishes to you!
Sir, You have no idea how helpful your video has been for me, now I can "attack" my studio and rearrange everything as I am returning after 7 years of absence in painting. Thank you very much. God bless.
I've been looking for ideas to help with my setup and your video is the best I've found. I'm fortunate enough to be able to use a spare bedroom in my house for painting and this was a big help. Very good advice on only having things in the room to use for painting. You know where everything is, and you're less distracted. Thank you..
Very nice ideas Chase. I like the brillant light in the studio. My last studio was similar with light on 3 sides coming into the studio for painting. I now paint in the basement, so not too inspiring. I organize all my paintings into the series they fall into and by size, so you can find them quickly. I like the idea of stamping the canvas. I have a small COA that I just glue to the back with acrylic paint once I make a sale.
I hope you have good lighting in the basement. It's really worth having an electrician install lots of fixtures. I misspoke in the video. The lumens for my lights is 1100, not 1000. Best wishes to you.
I'm wheel crazy.... so empowering to change the configuration of your studio at a moments notice. Glad you liked the video Beverly. I have another one on here called "Artist Tips"
Thank you for sharing. What a wonderful space! I certainly understand the need for privacy and wish I could stop unwanted intrusions. When I'm painting it's difficult to get back to that place in my mind after an interruption.
I'm working in my studio organization since june, but absolutely nothing was enough, and everything kept messy. But now I really realize how much stuff I have! I need to take some distractions NOW!
Fantastic studio and gorgeous paintings! I love the white on everything too but I believe the glare from it would skew colours too much and believe in a grey neutral, matte wall, palette and equipment.
oh..... all gray, that's probably a good idea. Thanks for sharing that. White gives me the most ambient light but I can see how gray is a great way to go too.
great space, I rather enjoyed the cleanliness and organization of it. I dont have my own space right now and I dream of making a space. seeing yours being so thought out really helps encourage me to get my own space and make it my own.
Great well thought out video, really clever functional pieces you have come up with, thank you so much for taking the time to share these ideas with us, I really appreciate it and will be incorporating as much as I can into my own space. Loved your studio!
Thanks very useful tips and i like the pure white and blankness to let those ideas come forward, practicality is a must and open storage so that materials are at hand. I appreciate :) Happy New Year
@@ChaseLangfordArtist Thank u! Moving back to the UK very soon after 4 years in Italy so full of inspiration and passion. Wish u a fulfilling year too :)
A handy thing to use with oil paint especially is a piece of transparent glass. you put it over a white surface so you can see a bit through the color - makes it easier especially when youre mixing a lot of similar colors, and you aren't creating much waste this way either
So many great ideas! Thank you for sharing! My little 10’x10’ room could certainly benefit from a few of them... I might actually enjoy spending time in there! Thanks!😊
What a wonderfully informative video, thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I admire how organised you are, and how much thought has obviously gone into your set up - i imagine having everything customised so perfectly for your preferences and working style allows you to focus on painting without distraction. Thank you again for all you do to help us new artist have a wonderful day.
There is an emptiness in the soul that sadly nothing can fill, except Art
Yes! And music.
Huh?...harsh and narrow thought. A partner, a child, a commitment to some purpose.... art is ony one part of a whole life.
Great video, packed with relevant useful information. Your meticulously clean white space is beautiful. Thank you for all of the ideas.
Wonderful again, thank you Chase! 💖 I had one of the tables built the exact size of a ping pong table, and painted it blue. I use it for art, and when tired, we play table tennis on it. 😀
Sounds great!
Thank you Chase, very helpful! Your studio is amazing!
Hi Chase. Just wanted to say, you have the BEST, informational videos for artist. You provide ideas for functionality, as well as for business. Thank you!
I appreciate that!
Cup holder, brilliant!
Hello, your video was so helpful. I was stuggling with a cluttered studio and not creating but now I will be able to make a lot of changes. Thank you so much for your guidance! Hugs from Montana
Awesome! needless clutter = bad! lol. It's so important to be mindful and tale command of your studio space. I'm thrilled this was helpful.
Excellent video. I am planning an art studio, which will be an extension to my house. This has given me many excellent ideas.
awesome. check out my other video on this topic. look in my channel.
Chase, I met an artist in Provincetown, MA who stored his paintings in a similar fashion as you, but set up in such a way that he could turn them as in pages in a book.
oh yes, that's a really nice way to do it. Some galleries have that kind of set up.
Brilliant film showing fixtures and fittings very cleverly adapted. So helpful. Thanks ! 👍🏼👏🏻
Thanks Sam. Good light is vital. Cheers!
I like the idea of using two sets of bookshelves with a board on top for a table. Great ideas!
the top board was a one inch thick 48 x 96 sheet of good grade plywood then I had to trim it down a bit.
Great space. Thanks for all the great ideas.
Rajiv Desai
Hey i am you 1000th subscriber. Really. By the way love and support from India
Oh wow, thanks for letting me know, I would have missed that milestone.
Keep at it!
Oh, I LOVE all the great ideas you've shown us. I definitely plan to utilize a few Thank you for sharing your studio.
Wow, thank you!
Your very organized. Great tips, TVs.
Loved the paint cup holder you made. What a great idea!
it's the little things that can really help. glad you liked the holder, I was worried I was geeking out. lol. keep painting!
You mentioned all the issues I've run into - wheels not rolling smooth enough, constantly moving things around. Thanks for sharing your space with us.
Glad to help
What a wonderful studio tutorial, Chase! I'm in process of moving my wee Atelier from a 7-8' "dining nook" to the 10 × 10' end of my living room, and appreciate these helpful tips. I'm grateful to have a large easel, a gift from a friend who studied it up before passing it on, as it had a tendency to drop! (Thankfully it's been steady for me!)
a good easel is hard to find. ;-)
Thank you very much for the openness and all the important information!
Thank you for sharing this video. Very detailed, and I love your professional set up!
Practical indeed but very cold/clinical vibe. Thanks for the tips 🌈
THANK YOU!
Hey Patty - you are welcome. Look on my channel for a newer video much like this one.
Thank you, Chase. Though I’ve been painting for years, we just moved into a house that provides a dedicated studio space. (about 500 sq feet!) Your thoughts have been really helpful. My challenge is budgeting for flat files. :)
I got my flat file used for a bargain..... look on Craigs List.
Very interesting and helpful, inspiring. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Some brilliant ideas! Thanks for all the tips and the studio tour! 🎨
Any time!
Such great suggestions Chase! Wonderful educational video.
Wow! Thank you for that look into your studio. I love the cups board! I'm going to buy casters and put everything on wheels!
wheels all the way! lol
Great studio, and a lovely tour with quality information for other artists!
Can't wait to have such a dedicated studio for art making myself.
Glad you think this will be helpful.
Great tip with the cups holder! However most other tips are geared towards a large studio, my space is only 9 x 7 feet LW and 7 ft high. Oh and wheels on everything is great too, thanks 👍
My take away is to think of FUNCTION and FOCUSED on ART creation. Less is more. Feeling inspired. Thank you.
Absolutely! well said!
Excellent advice, thanks for the tour!
Mona -- you are most welcome.
So helpful. Thanks for posting!
A well-thought-out studio. Thank you for sharing! xox
Any time!
@@ChaseLangfordArtist Thank you for your answer, very sweet. This definitely helps.
Thank you very much for sharing your time and space with us.
Wow! So much good info here! What a refreshing video! Your art is amazing too! Thank you for sharing.
You are so welcome!
God bless.
glad it was helpful. Good for you that you are getting back in the studio.
I've been looking for ideas to help with my setup and your video is the best I've found. I'm fortunate enough to be able to use a spare bedroom in my house for painting and this was a big help. Very good advice on only having things in the room to use for painting. You know where everything is, and you're less distracted. Thank you..
Good to hear. I haven another video on my channel that is the follow up to this one.
I am incrediLBY critical and cynical, generally but this was an EXCCELLENT video! Thank you.
lol...... hey Paul.... thanks.... so nice of you to say. I have another one on here called "Artist Tips" ...cheers
A fascinating video Chase. Your ideas will be very helpful and useful. Thanks for sharing. Regards, JB.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I like the idea of customizing the shelves and storage depending on your art and methods. Probably worth spending time to make all that. thanks Chase!
Hey Kevin -- It is so empowering and gratifying (and practical!!) to make sure everything is geared toward making the most of your studio.
Great tour, and fantastic set up! I love seeing the works in progress, and how yoú´re working with light. Looking forward to seeing more of your vids.
thanks. I have a new studio that has lots of cool custom shelving and a paint cart that I will be sharing soon...
Thanks, Chase! Everything on wheels, fans, LED lighting...great info!
I'm wheel crazy.... so empowering to change the configuration of your studio at a moments notice. Glad you liked the video Beverly. I have another one on here called "Artist Tips"
I am trying to do a small studio for my son in the garage, it is really amazing view of your studio!
Wonderful! Look for my other video like this on my channel.
Oh such a wonderful space! I really love your paint cart and was the solution I was looking for. Thank you!
fantastic! glad this was helpful.
Thank you for sharing. What a wonderful space! I certainly understand the need for privacy and wish I could stop unwanted intrusions. When I'm painting it's difficult to get back to that place in my mind after an interruption.
yep...... I hear ya!
Fantastic video Chase!! Very inspiring and has given me great ideas for my home studio. I love your comment on functional purity.
Jude -- I'm so happy to hear this.
Thank you for sharing 💚 IM loving your space.. Great lighting for sure
Thank you for such an informative video... I love the simplicity and clarity in your studio!
Thanks for watching!
I'm working in my studio organization since june, but absolutely nothing was enough, and everything kept messy. But now I really realize how much stuff I have! I need to take some distractions NOW!
sounds good.
Thank you for your thoughtful walk through of your studio & some if your working process. Much appreciated!
Elizabeth -- you are most welcome. More to come!
I'm happy to hear the video encouraged you.
I am happy to find you lots of useful information , thank you .
Lots of good advice, many thx Chase
Some wonderful ideas! Thanks Chase!
I learned a lot about what I will do when I design my studio in my garage! Thank you
Great to hear!
Great well thought out video, really clever functional pieces you have come up with, thank you so much for taking the time to share these ideas with us, I really appreciate it and will be incorporating as much as I can into my own space. Loved your studio!
ZG -- thanks so much! cheers to you.
Thanks very useful tips and i like the pure white and blankness to let those ideas come forward, practicality is a must and open storage so that materials are at hand. I appreciate :) Happy New Year
Thanks Stacy-Ann. Hope the new year your ideas come forth with abundance.
@@ChaseLangfordArtist Thank u! Moving back to the UK very soon after 4 years in Italy so full of inspiration and passion. Wish u a fulfilling year too :)
Those first sentences are essential!
A handy thing to use with oil paint especially is a piece of transparent glass. you put it over a white surface so you can see a bit through the color - makes it easier especially when youre mixing a lot of similar colors, and you aren't creating much waste this way either
that's a great idea, especially with darker colors. thanks!
@@ChaseLangfordArtist you’re welcome! Enjoy:)
So many great ideas! Thank you for sharing! My little 10’x10’ room could certainly benefit from a few of them... I might actually enjoy spending time in there! Thanks!😊
Hooray!
That was a great tour of your studio and your really strong design thinking. Many thanks. Deb
Thanks so much!
What a wonderfully informative video, thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I admire how organised you are, and how much thought has obviously gone into your set up - i imagine having everything customised so perfectly for your preferences and working style allows you to focus on painting without distraction. I love the idea of getting a book of your paintings made, it would have never occurred to me! Many thank i have subscribed to your channel. Megan
I use Blurb.com for my books but there's lots of companies that offer this service. So look around at all the choices.
@@ChaseLangfordArtist That's great. I didn't know one could do that. Thanks.
Thank you mr chase . Grate video
Thank you! There are so many craft room ideas, but We paint, sew, draw, quilt,.... I needed ideas on the painting side of things and this really helped. We are looking for a house with a daylight basement with good light and a sink area nearby. Fingers crossed
You are so welcome!
Great video! Thank you for all your amazing tips!
Thank you! This really helps me to figure out to figure out how create a studio within my small "Live/Work" loft apartment. Who needs a living room, anyway :)
my first studio was my entire bedroom in my tiny apartment in Santa Monica. I slept where the small dining table should have been.
Thank you, Mr. Langford. I’m also a painter and graphic artist and just found myself being a great admirer of your work. There’s something about you that genuinely inspires me.
Your studio carries that pure and simple vibe that I often struggled to find. Good to know you’re out there! Keep up the great work!
thanks for the kind words. best wishes and keep painting....
