the level of detail and animations for zooming in on important things in this video was very impressive. Also the pacing was very engaging and i never felt a lull. Very very well done. Thanks for making such a great vid :)
I appreciate that you respond to peoples comments and questions. I learn a lot from your responses. Most UA-camrs ignore the comment section. Your videos are well done.
Such an engaging and pleasant review. You called out and showed so many practical situations with both cameras. Best review of these cameras hands-down. Thank you!

I kinda stopped on the GoPro carousel at hero 9 and never really had an interest in 360 cameras till this X3. I did hold off to see if Gopro was releasing a new 360 so when that was a no I bought the X3 and glad I did. I am really impressed with it.
@@matovako Don't know if I'm lucky or careful but I haven't damaged mine yet....knock wood. Although I have been using those lens covers and they do take away from the video slightly.
I have a question: Could you potentially test these products with users with darker skin tones? The presence of better details in deep shadows is what persuaded my decision to purchase the Fusion over the Insta 2.
@@anythinggarage you mean max? It’s 399 if you buy from GoPro.com directly with a subscription for GoPro. The subscription is 60/yr after that but you can cancel anytime. The subscription lets you replace your GoPros for a replacement fee in case of damage.
I bought the original -360- GoPro Fusion and the workflow sucks so much! I regret buying it and it still has shit support compared to the max. I wish i could go back in time and return it.
⚡👏🏼👏🏼⚡ *Great comparison video!!* I'm actually surprised at some of the differences, I expected the Max to do better than it did but maybe because I was thinkin of the One X2, not the newest X3.
Thanks buddy! You’re not alone in thinking that because until now comparisons I’ve seen have used a tripod. On a tripod, max IS better. But unless you’re shooting a virtual tour, for me the 3rd person view is more important and so is ease of use.
You are absolutely right but have you noticed that as China has become more prosperous, its citizens have become more educated and there are more freedoms? That is the long term solution to defeating tyrannical regimes.
Interestingly enough, check out the headlines about protests against zero Covid in China. Compare those protests with tiananmen massacre. That’s what I’m talking about. That’s how to spread democracy through prosperity not wars.
The X3 looks really cool. I’ve been using the MAX for a couple years now mainly filming theme park attractions at Disney World and most recently Disneyland while pairing with a Zoom H3VR microphone for spatial audio. I find the best results for low light is to set the min/max iso to 100/1600 and set the EV to -2. I’ve posted a couple 360 videos recently in low light with the MAX (I.e. It’s a Small World Holiday at night and Haunted Mansion Holiday) using these settings. Love your videos and they are always very informative!
Hi Matt. Fyi many theme parks including Disneyland have banned selfie sticks. As for low light capability, the best one is one RS 1-inch 360. See low light samples in my review here: ua-cam.com/video/5C2HjoQpaH8/v-deo.html
Здравствуйте, а почему на селфи палке есть искажения и видно начало палки? Можно ли улучшить этот момент? Я на других обзорах видел что палку не видно, только тень от палки. Может специальная нужна палка?
There is a bit of distortion in the selfie stick test shots because I am using two cameras side by side on a bracket. If I am shooting normally with one camera then there is no issue. You can see in the end part where I am talking to the camera on a unicycle. That one was shot with only one camera so there is no distortion.
@@360vroomers да точно, сейчас пересмотрел, спасибо за ответ. Ещё один вопрос если не трудно, даже два вопроса, обычная палка становится не видимой? И как крепился микрофон, это специальный крепеж?

Thanks a lot for your excellent review. I was wondering which one choose and obviously, for my use, your review give me the answer : it's a go for insta 360 with no doubt ! But I have a remaining question before purchasing. As you probably already know, there is no main gain between X2 and X3 in term of video quality. So next step is to find a comparison between X2 and X3 as you did ! Thanks again. ;)
Hi Maeva. Sorry for the delayed reply. yes, I agree that X2 and X3 are almost the same for image quality. The main advantage of X3 is the convenience of a very large touchscreen. BTW if you are into shooting underwater, pls check back here on August 3 for a new product that may be of interest to you.
my use for these type of cameras is surfing/foiling. The GoProMax has a much smaller profile it feels smaller when held using a boom or handle while surfing. all the arguments made for X3 are relevant, hopefully GoPro comes out with Max2 and solves a lot of these challenges.
I have BOTH. The one thing that is questionable about the Max is the way the 2 lenses are placed. Because at close range. The stitching looks cut off. This is when i attach the max on my helmet.
It’s because gopro max (and fusion) use traditional lens and sensor setups. Ricoh Theta and Insta360 use a folded optical path that enables them to put the sensor beside the lens instead of behind the lens. With the sensors out of the way, the lenses on theta and insta360 can be placed back to back for smoother stitching.
I've had a terrible year with the GoPro MAx, support was terrible, their "refresh" program took almost 2 months. Lens scratched again the day I got it back. The good lens is starting to scratch and I always use the covers. The clear lens protectors for filming are terrible, scratch easy and completely distort video. The battery swells up and no longer usable after roughly a year.
Sorry to hear that. Re the lens protectors that’s true for lens protectors of almost any brand including insta360. However x3 has a way of protecting the lens that is not possible on other cameras. See here ua-cam.com/video/V5EWMTzL6Y0/v-deo.html
I see the camera circling the subject but where is the camera? Is it held by someone else or on a drone? I'm interested in filming myself on my motorcycle but fail to comprehend how the camera functions.
Hi I was shooting all by myself. 360 cameras like the x3 can create an invisible flying camera effect. You can learn more about that in this beginners’ guide ua-cam.com/video/yrHcprg8HPE/v-deo.html
Thanks for the excellent review of both cameras. I am steering more towards the insta360 X3 camera. I think any overheating issues are less with the insta360 and they don't get quite as hot as the GoPro's. I really like the 360 view mode of the Insta360. Still looking at more videos on the action cameras. Note: I do not have any action cameras at this time. I didn't like the overheating problems of the GoPro's. I do long 30-60 minute video shoots. Do you think the Insta360 X3 is good for long video shoots?? Do you have a video on how long it takes to download videos from the Insta360 X3 to say my PC for editing??? Unrelated question: I don't know how you ride that unicycle and at fast speeds and feel safe riding it. You are amazing on that Unicycle. You ever feel uncomfortable riding that unicycle?? Thank you and take care.
Hi dathyr1! First of all, I’m really sorry for the late reply. Somehow I didn’t see your comment before. As for recording long videos, it is possible to record an hour long video on X3 as long as the weather is not very hot. But there are caveats: 1. After 30 mins, x3 has to write its cache to the micro sd card. So after 30 mins, there is a gap of around 10 or 15 seconds before it starts a new recording. 2. 360 videos take up a lot of space. A 60-min video would be huge. Maybe 64gb or something? 3. Most people don’t want to watch a 60 min video of anything. If you will edit it to cut it to a more normal length, it could be time-consuming. Download speed depends on your micro sd card reader. Ideally you should use usb 3.0 reader in a usb 3.0 slot on your PC As for the electric unicycle, I feel it is safer than a skateboard although it is more dangerous than a bicycle. I make sure to wear full protection at higher riding speeds. But it is fun and practical for short commutes (3 miles or less). Some people ride it on even longer trips but personally for longer distances I prefer to drive a car. 😊
If the weather is up to 78F and you use a fast micro sd card such as sandisk extreme pro (red and black) or sandisk extreme (red and gold) at 5.7k then i don’t experience overheating. Overheating is more likely if you use a slow micro sd card, or shoot in warm or hot weather or shoot in slow motion (eg 3k100 fps).
How do you think they would do (or have you ever tested) in a condition of engine vibration? Say around 2500 - 3000 rpm. Our older GoPros (Hero 4) don't do well, and the newer Hero 10 does much better. I was wondering about 360 video, either out of camera or run through software. Thanks! You make very useful videos!
This review certainly tips the scale in favor of the x3. II’m curious what that balance might look like if I factor in being able to see the screen (user interface for me mode, etc) without reading glasses. I struggle with reading the digital display on small electronics.
makes a lot of difference when you use X3 with flat (log) color profile as well, but for most cases I also use Standard because of better noise reduction and more natural look
@@360vroomers didn't know about the removal of the LUT but as I'm grading in Davinci with other LUTS no real issue for me. Very nice test and greetings from Germany!
Can I use the x3 or gopro without a computer? More specifically I only use my iPhone and iPad but not sure if I can utilize these cameras without a laptop
You can but if you want to view, edit and share on your phone, X3 is TEN TIMES better than gopro max. Seriously. Way easier and way more powerful. Max is frustrating to use on a phone. I even have trouble just trying to connect to my phone.

Debating on which one to get. I like the x3 but not sure if it’ll hold up for what I want to use it for. Plus it looks like it sticks out more than the GoPro and might snag on something. I would use it primarily my motorcycle rides, but also my military Airborne jumps. Thoughts?
Hey there Walrus! Many people use Insta360 X3 for motorcycles and skydiving so it should be ok. Max would be ok too. Both are just as fragile as the other (like other 360 cameras they have bulging lenses on both sides). Both have optional lens protectors although max’s lens protectors are clip ons that are easier to remove but also easier to dislodge. X3 uses adhesive stick ons that are secure but you can only use them a few times. Whether you use x3 or max, pls use only original lens protectors. Cheap 3rd party protectors will make stitching much worse.
What're the odds that the random video I clicked to watch a comparison video of these two was filmed in my hometown lmfao. I was like no way is that MBMS in the intro clips
gopro is really nice in daylight, but i found that using insta360 cameras in low light being a lot better. Also the software of instal360 is super easy to use on a phone. ill be getting that x3 very soon. ive used a Go2 for over a year now and its great!
Excellent review! I use an Insta360 X3 to record flights in a small airplane, and it is a great camera, have had excellent results. But it has a serious problem with HEAT - it heats a lot, and sometimes it turns off. I had to put a fan on the airplane panel to be able to do the work between starting the motor until taking off, as while on land the cabin is hotter - in less than 10 minutes it turns off. Usually during flight there is some ventilation and it works well, but today it turned of during landing because of heat (we are in winter now where I live - there was some heat, but nothing excessive). Also, the HDR does not work so well - first I cannot use the HDR mode because it heats even more the camera (manual alerts about it). And the normal 360 video mode does not work well when the camera is placed in the midlle of cabin having part of the image at lower light (passengers and panel) and part with more light (external view) - usually external view is overexposed and we can see nothing (the only way was to put it attached near the windshield, but it limitates a lot its use, when I want get the panel as well). Besides these uisues, I like very much the camera. Now I want to buy another one to record external views simultaneously (that is why I'm seeing this review!), but I was thinking about the GoPro Max as an option for the heat problem - but this video pushes it towards the Insta360... (there is a POV lock that locks the view for whole flight with the plane, that I use a lot - I don' know how it is with the GoPro) (Insta360 does a fantastic job stabilizing with the horizon, regrdless how much turbulence we have - and does a smooth move when the plane is turning)
Thanks and sorry to hear about your overheating issues. The first thing to check is your micro sd card. Are you using Sandisk extreme pro or extreme or Insta360 brand micro sd cards. Re external views in a car, see tip 1 of this video: ua-cam.com/video/0QqDo7WfGDs/v-deo.html
1.) Every time i shoot 8k do I need to remove the SD card and transfer it on to my tablet. or is download button option able to transfer the full 8k? and if not, how to make it download the full 8k video. 2.) Can I produce 8k videos with just the insta 360 app on Android or do i need to use Insta studio for mac/dekstop? 3.) is motion nd on by default? 4.) Whats thr best settings for indoor 8k 360. like for a house party? 5.) what is this "in camera stiching? should i set in on or off
1. It depends whether you want a 360 video where the viewer can look around freely, or a reframed non-360 video. You can only get 8k for a 360 video. In a reframed non-360 video, the max export resolution is 4k. 2. A high end phone can export 4k but not 8k. If you want 8k, you need to edit on desktop and export as a 360 video. 3. Motion ND is activated by default if you use timeshift. Anyway you can turn it off. 4. Shoot 24fps and keep it mounted rather than handheld. 5. This is for photos. If you want to stitch your photos on 3rd party software like ptgui, turn it off. Otherwise turn it on. I hope this helps.
I have seen a lot of tests on other youtube channels and NO ONE showed such a big problem with sharpness of GoPro. So I can presume either you have a problem with your GoPro 12 or you made it on purpose to show how Insta is good and GoPro is bad.
I ipso jure. I specified that I put both cameras to the lowest sharpness setting. Then later when comparing x3 hdr video, I used lowest sharpness for x3 hdr while using maximum sharpness for max. X3 was still sharper. I suspect that this is because most UA-camrs compared x3 and max on monopods or held vertically, whereas I used a selfie stick and the cameras were horizontal. As I showed, when the cameras are vertical, max is sharper. But when the cameras are in a horizontal position like on a selfie stick, then x3 is sharper. That is a test I haven’t seen anyone else do, but it is how most 360 shooters use their cameras.
Hi nemesis8518! For the shots that used the sound from the x3, yes they were all with the Rode attached. When you say exclusion distance do you mean minimum stitching distance? It was able to stitch 16 inches along the stitch line with some distortion.
Great video. I originally got the insta 360, but it wouldn't connect to the phone. After contacting support and still not being able to use the camera I returned it an and got the go pro max. Hopefully they got that glitch figured out.
360 cameras can be held upright like a regular camera, whether you are shooting in 360 or in single lens mode. The only exception is that the X3 has another mode called "Me Mode" where the X3 uses the bottom half of both lenses, so you have to aim the bottom of the camera at yourself with the selfie stick. If you hold the selfie stick upright, then me mode would show your legs and feet. I hope that clarifies. If not pls let me know.
That's a really detailed review with the simplest language for amateurs like me. Insta360 x3 really beats the gooro max. It's time to GoPro launch the max 2. The older model isn't the better choice now.
It looks like the INSTA is a better overall camera, but, I still think that the GOPRO is a more user friendly and better served with cheaper accessories and software. I am still deciding though, after seeing your video, I will buy one of the two this weekend. Thanks for the great video.
What an intelligent review! ty I've heard that a big downside of the Insta 360 is that the lens scratches way too easily...anyone have any thoughts about this problem? When is an updated new version of the Insta 360 coming out?
What helmet are you wearing? I need one with a visor for riding into the sun when it's low on the horizon. Working on ways to shoot with a long selfie stick and my X3 on my ebike. Thanks for making this video.
Thanks! The one I wore with a visor works very well -- quiet, comfortable, looks cool, and has a tinted visor. amzn.to/3AP8a6B If you are vlogging on your ebike, I suggest having your face visible. The one I like is the Demon FR Link, which is more affordable than similar helmets and has a removable chinbar. amzn.to/3VmJWIY Let me know if you have any questions!
Thank you for the review! I just ordered the x3 based on your review! By the way, I wanted to use this for playing tennis, I think you said in your video, these are usually used on a selfie stick, so the camera isnt really vertically oriented? How would I set this up with a tripod during playing tennis for the best 360 video? Thank you again!
Hey Christian congrats on the x3! If you will use this for a tennis video, put the camera from where you want to see the perspective. For example, if you want the perspective of a referee, then you would put the camera on a high tripod beside the net, near where the referee’s head would be. If you want the perspective of the audience then you would put the x3 on a tripod where the audience would be etc. One note of caution is that if the ball hits the camera, it could topple over and get scratched. So I strongly recommend getting sandbags for the tripod if it is in a location where it could get hit. I hope this helps!
Hi what stitching issue are you encountering? In insta360 studio there are several settings for stitching. If you let me know your stitching issue I can suggest which setting you can try.
Thank you very much! Glad it was helpful! Btw Insta360 has a new camera called x4 and I also compared it to x3 and gopro max here: ua-cam.com/video/K4GSfKt0Dik/v-deo.html
About the horizon levelling / horizon lock, I find it odd that the X3 doesn't have it when it is listed in its functions on their website. Are you sure it doesn't have it?
Hi Dan. Sorry I wasn’t clear. X3 does have horizon leveling. What I meant was the tilt (not the rotation). In normal flowstate stabilization mode, the tilt will be totally level just like GoPro max. But in addition, you can use tracking or me mode to make it so that the subject stays in the middle. Max doesn’t have that option although you can do it manually (with many key frames).
I always inclined towards gopro, but got disappointed several years ago after they shut down support for gopro studio and switched to subscription model.. I don't like paying constantly regardless of amount.. Regardless, decision was made and I am now proud owner of X3. Have a look at your videos, decision is a no brainer.
I have mixed feelings about the subscription. I don’t like posting every year but at least the protection plan covers all my GoPro cameras. Congrats on getting the x3!
I don't know how the X3 fairs when compared to the One R, but the One R turned out to be a paperweight for me with Insta360 not giving me any support. That put me off of every Insta360 camera for life. I don't know how well GoPro supports their customers when you need it, but I find that this is increasingly a consideration when choosing a camera: first reliability, then support.
@@360vroomers It came with different colour balances on each side of the 360 module to the point of being unusable, and Insta360 did not give me a solution and they wanted me to ship the camera back to China at my expense. Also the camera froze constantly and I had a hard time getting any length of video out of it. Colour problem aside, I did not think the image quality was particularly good.
@@damianc8551 that sucks. The good news is that the issue with difference in color between lenses was solved a long, long time ago. I’ve seen a few units that were truly defective. Not sure which one you have unless I see a sample. Did you buy from insta360 directly or through a reseller? You might want to try a firmware update to see if it fixes your issues. Need to charge it and connect to the insta360 app. Then under settings look for about insta360 and tap on it.
A great detailed share. GoPro seems to be on shaky ground going forward. They don't instill a lot of confidence in their users' hearts and minds. Over the years, since I got my first GoPro, a Hero3, I have been accustomed to let-downs. I wonder how Insta360 users feel about their experience. One thing, it is a shame Kodak never became a contender. They had the talent inside, the Kodak Ivory Tower management could never accept the obsoletion of film.
Thanks! Max is 3 yrs old now. I hope they will release its successor in 2023. GoPro has the capability to leapfrog insta360 based on hardware. But for software they lag far behind insta360. Speaking of insta360, I think they have excellent support in terms of releasing constant updates, usually every month. And the updates often add significant capabilities, such as the cool skyswap effecf. Their customer service is not as good as GoPro’s imho but it’s still decent. And if you use my affiliate link to buy their camera and encounter a problem with their customer service, I can intervene for you.
I've been so disappointed with my old GoPros. Problem after problem. I have the One X2 now and it's been fantastic! The reliability is no comparison. With GoPro, I was always worried about whether I would have usable footage at the end of the day. With Insta360 I don't even think about it.
Hi Oloveak! Great question. If you just want the absolute best video quality then it is the 1-inch 360 right now. Here is my review: ua-cam.com/video/5C2HjoQpaH8/v-deo.html It costs more but it has the best video quality for 360 cameras.
Thanks andrecoxa! FYI X3 also has single lens mode. In fact, it has some single lens modes that Max doesn't have: Me Mode (3rd person view) and bullet time mode (slow motion me mode). Technically these use both lenses, but they use only the inside half of each lens, so they are like virtual "single lens" modes.
@@360vroomers Thank you very much for the reply! My biggest use for the single lens mode with the GPM is filming my daughter, especially in water, without worrying about how or if I rotate the camera etc. I wonder if I can get a similar or even better experience in that scenario with the x3 modes you mentioned. I would highly appreciate your input with this. (FYI, I also use the 360 features of the GPM for a 360 output, so that will definitely be an improved experience from what I've seen.)
@@andrecoxa hi Andre! Me mode and bullet time are designed for shooting selfies. If you are in the shot then yes they can help. If you are not in the shot, another option is to let your daughter hold the selfie stick 😃
Very interested in this camera. Currently using GoPro but wanting to expand into 360. Does anyone know if the file types are compatible to switch between the two during editing?
Hey there wanderingadventures! Yes you can absolutely include videos from x3, gopro, or other cameras in the same video. X3 shoots 360 videos but most people reframe the 360 videos as non-360 videos. The advantages are: unlimited stabilization, 3rd person view, and the ability to keyframe camera movements cinematically. The easiest way to reframe a 360 video is to use insta360 app viewfinder mode which enables you to move your phone around like a camera. This tutorial shows you how (it’s for one r but the steps are the same): ua-cam.com/video/yrHcprg8HPE/v-deo.htmlsi=E5LI_gL8stSSuhSh
Hi I believe it is the lens design. Max prioritized the middle of the lens so it has higher resolution in the middle. But this same design means it has less resolution toward the edge which is what is needed for 3rd person view. This is not possible to change with firmware.
Very Interesting Mic. GOPRO MAX is getting a bit too old now compare to Insta360 X3. X3 all the way for me 👍 In 2022/23 who will buy a GOPRO MAX..? Let's wait for GOPRO MAX 2 😊
Can you load the GoPro video files into the Insta software and vice versa, like is there anything about the files that lock it to one particular software only etc? Can you track the gorpo image for stabilisation within the X3 software for example?
Hi Jaxson. One issue is that GoPro can only export 5.7k 360 videos in cineform, which is not compatible with insta360 software. If you export in 4k as h264 or h265 then yes the insta360 software can open it (for now).
Thanks Kyle. It originally started out as a simple one-scene comparison. Then I thought, what about this..? So I shot some more. Then I thought again what about this…? All in all, I spent more than 10 days doing that, discarding a lot of previous footage 😂 I’m glad you liked the video!

Hey there hazelnut49! If you want simplicity and the convenience of an easier interface, go for x3. If you want versatility (convert from 360 to GoPro-like action cam) and upgradeability, I recommend RS or RS 1-inch 360. The latter is if you want the absolute best image quality.
@@hazelnut49 Insta360 X3 is definitely a LOT more popular. I believe it's because it costs less and is more convenient. Not only that but X3 profit margin is higher than RS. But I'm 99% sure Insta360 will continue to develop RS because their goal is to overtake gopro and the RS is a formidable 2-in-1 weapon in that war.
@@hazelnut49 yes I think insta360 will continue to create new lens modules for RS. Right now I don’t think there is a new 1inch sensor available but if there is a new Sony 1inch with a significant improvement, I think we’ll see a new 1 inch mod and 1 inch 360 mod.

The short answer is not really imho. Although x3 and max will be able to record and even track a player, the issue is that it is too far away to from the players to have good resolution for either camera. Couple of options: 1. You can get an action cam instead, such as dji action 3 or 4 or hero 11, which have much more detail than a 360 camera. Dji action 3 has very good battery life. Hero 11 has excellent image quality but is known for suddenly stopping in the middle of recording. 2. You can get two or three action cams to cover different parts of the field. This will put each one closer to the action and provide more detail. You can use a tentaclesync or similar device to make it easy to sync the videos. 3. You may want to try Veo or Hudl which are designed to do what you want.
@@360vroomers okay thank you! I also forgot to mention that I won’t be recording on a full sized 11v11 field. The games I’m recording are on small sided fields, like 3v3 and 6v6. I’m currently using my iPhone 13 Pro Max and have the video setting to 4K60fps and it looks great but the phone dies really fast and gets too hot in the sun and stops recording! So now having that info, do you still recommend an action camera?
@@mr.charizard9232 in that case, x3 or max can do the job. But an action cam will still be much more detailed because it has many more pixels per degree field of view. Dji Action 3 has excellent endurance. I heard action 4 has less endurance.
No contest from watching the comparison. Curious if you have gotten or plan on getting the Insta360 one rs 1-inch 360. I'd love to see a comparison between that and the Insta360 X3
I'm really torn. Need a second action camera and was exploring 360. I know not a lot of people care about this (and I don't blame them) but I hate the fact there are so many permissions required for the Insta360 app and your camera is very gimped without the app. GoPro would require some app usage as well but based on country of origin/privacy laws.. there's one I heavily prefer. Still torn, hardware wise, like the Insta360 X3 better, but being someone who is more security conscious, I almost want to choose the Max despite thinking its the poorer choice! Would it be that bad? Or perhaps just get a non 360 Go Pro.
The only time you absolutely need the app is to activate it. After activating you can delete the app if you wish. The only thing you’ll need is the desktop app for stitching the videos. Another thing is you can log out of the app so that any data they have is not traced to you. The app will still work. All companies these days are tracking us anyway so personally I’ve given up on the idea of preserving privacy. 😔
@@360vroomers Wow appreciate the quick response! Yeah definitely everyone is tracking so I guess if you still try to care (lol) you just try to set some boundaries to try to have some control :D. Mine was where a company based out of lol. (apologies or the long-ish comment!).. but I'm intrigued! I had read that after activating, the desktop app is limited - but.. as you mentioned, it seems I can just stitch, and then do post in my editor of choice? That's.. not bad at all. My more major concern though is that I heard that if I don't use the phone app, I lose access to some settings/camera settings? I imagine I'd lose some of the "AI editing" tools on the app but again, we can edit in post. Are you aware of any "game changing" camera/shooting settings that I'd be missing out by not having the phone app/companion? Lastly, I know that the Insta360 has that feature that "centers" you, is that something we can replicate in post too? I feel like a chump for even considering a GO Pro 360 Max in 2023..but it seemed to be the only competitor lol. if I can get the X3 and feel somewhat comfortable with using it.... Subbed and liked by the way. The fact that you engage with your viewers (and seeing below, I'm not the only one) is awesome to see.
@@cayanhr thank you very much for the sub and like! You can definitely change almost any setting on the x3 screen without the app. Features that are only on the mobile app: live streaming, viewfinder mode (reframe your video by moving your phone around like a virtual camera) and ai effects as you said (eg sky swap, energy surge, clone trail, etc). If you don’t need those features, you can use insta360 studio desktop app to batch stitch videos or to batch reframe and export (which is what I do usually). Re centering subject, you can definitely do that on the desktop app. There are 3 ways: me mode, tracking, and auto frame. I demo’d those 3 ways in this video starting at around 03:15 of the video) here: ua-cam.com/video/E6hnp9gDUU0/v-deo.html Let me know if you have any questions!
Great review,……but…….The one comparison test I’d really like to see that never gets done is an aggressive surface water immersion test to mimic surfing, windsurfing, kiteboarding, wakeboarding, foiling, waterskiing, etc. So not a slow immersion test to a certain water depth, rather repeatedly slamming the cameras into water at high speed but at shallow depth to see whether they really keep the water out!! Those official waterproof ratings are useless under these real life use conditions. Thanks!!
Thanks targadave! Unfortunately I’m a poor swimmer so I can’t really test those 😅. The best I can do is belly flop with it in a swimming pool. 😂. Gotta wait til we have access to a hotel ☺️
@@360vroomers No swimming ability required at all! For example you could take camera attached to a thin line a drop it into the water repeatedly from a fixed height of say 10 m’, simulating impact at high speed. Or maybe you spray the cameras with a high speed stream of water from a garden hose from different angles for a fixed time. Maybe there is another better way to run the test, but you get the idea. GoPro’s founder, Nick Woodman, has always been an avid surfer. I know he always intended his action cams to work specifically in that sort of water environment. It was never about the camera working specifically as a dive camera substitute, but more as a surface camera that could survive repeated aggressive dunkings!
Hi Elijah. Insta360 mobile app and insta360 studio (the desktop app) are both free. But you need an insta360 camera to get all the features of insta360 studio. And some features of the mobile app (such as some special effects) only work with newer insta360 cameras.
i bought insta 360x6, and looks like i did it very fast, and now im suffering with this camera. Im cycling a lot at night, and looks like i chose a wrong camera for that. Would you mind to show a video with a best action camera for night? not only around shops but also with only 1 or 2 flashlights on a bicycle?
Hi remaster. When you say you bought the wrong camera, what problems are you encountering? Let me know and then I can suggest a camera for you or a change in technique.

How well does the Insta360 X3 perform indoors for real estate videos? I'm interested in filming real estate agents and myself conducting a home showing. I would mount the X3 on a selfie stick to record us as we walk around the home. I would think the X3's multi-cam abilities would be great to reframe several angles and create B-roll. I would also attach a Rode Go II mic for audio. How good is the video quality indoors or would the 1" RS 360 sensor be better? Thanks :)
For indoors where light is sometimes not super bright, X3 performs well but if you want the absolute best quality, 1-inch 360 is even better in low light.
Interesting comparison. When will you upload the full size samples ? Viewing 360 in 2160p in youtube does probably not reflect actual quality of footage, so I'm wondering if quality looks really better with 5.7k an dalso wondering on end result in my Oculus Quest 2..
by the way, looking on internet, I see that UA-cam doesn't accept anymore movies with res higher than 4k, so if you could share your video on a google drive or onedrive or whatever, it would b egreat.
Glad I found your channel!! 🎉 Which camera would be better for filming while driving? Can you do a comparison between the two cameras showing how they perform recording scenery driving?
Thanks Pamela! Sorry for the delayed reply. If you are going to be shooting while driving, I assume the camera will be on a tripod, in a somewhat vertical position. In that case, I think gopro max will have better image quality than x3.
@@revaequitas gopro max has better in-camera audio. But if you are in a cockpit it might be really loud (is it a helicopter for example)? So my guess is that the sound might be unusable. If you will be talking, you will need to record a voiceover or you will need an external microphone. Max cannot use external mic but X3 can.
@@360vroomers Thanks for the response. It is a helicopter and most people use a line-in for this usage on regular GoPro cameras. I don’t think there is an option to do that with these 360 cameras. How about the image quality? Maybe even the RS but I haven’t researched that yet.
@@revaequitas x3 and RS both have optional mic input. The inputs use 3.5mm jack. X3 will have more worry-free stitching in a tight environment such as a heli cockpit.
Could you pleased uptate the sample files of both cameras. I’m really want to try to editing that source on my iPhone. I am going to buy a 360 cam for my tiktok daily vlog and i’m deciding between Gopro Max and Insta360 one x2 because in my country Vietnam are the same price. Thank you so much for the review ❤
Thanks again Mic. I have them both but use the X3 more with the 3m selfie stick because it is lighter (when Mountain biking or Gravel riding). But to be honest I am still impressed by the quality the GoPro Max produce for a camera that is already 3 years old. Hope GoPro will release the GoPro Max2 soon and see what they did improve ;-)
Hi Paladinbr. Between these two, the X3. The max is more detailed only directly in front or directly behind the camera. However, if your purpose is to read license plates (i.e. maximize detail), I would get a non-360 camera because they have far more detail, e.g. GoPro Hero 11. But if you want one that is 360, then the most detailed one is 1-inch 360 ($799).
@@360vroomers Thanks. It gets complicated trying to find something that strikes the balance of sufficient resolution to read plates, visibility forward and aft of the bike, and budget. More notes for the comparison. Appreciate it.
@@360vroomers I'll check it out, thanks. Right now I'm leaning towards a UK company named Techalogic. 1080P fore and aft and a helmet cam at 2k. Enough runtime for 2 days of round trip commuting with plenty of buffer. Combined cost for all 3 with extra brackets is less than the cost of either the 360 x3 or the gopro. I'll see how well they work out
HDR is practical but looks very artificial, i actually prefer the gopro with flat colors, it's also important not to be confused by details vs sharpness, the Gopro seems to use a low sharpness setting out of the box, but the insta360 uses a high sharpness setting out of the box but again i prefer softer more natural looking image than overprocessed, thank you for the video
Thanks Mathieu. I’m glad this video helped you make a decision. As for sharpness settings, both x3 and max were set to low, except for the hdr video vs max where I mentioned that I tried setting max to the highest sharpness and x3 to the lowest sharpness. But the x3 still came out more detailed.
@@MathieuTechMoto yes if used with a selfie stick (horizontal or diagonal) x3 is more detailed. If you shoot with a tripod (vertical) then max is more detailed.

Hi Calvincarlo8494. Because Insta360 has been on a very aggressive release schedule, I'm guessing within the next few months. I'm just speculating.
@@360vroomers I really hope so!
I kinda stopped on the GoPro carousel at hero 9 and never really had an interest in 360 cameras till this X3. I did hold off to see if Gopro was releasing a new 360 so when that was a no I bought the X3 and glad I did. I am really impressed with it.

Ok no problem I will try and post a link to samples.
with gopro, did you save the material in Mov, or in prores? Judging by the quality in mp4, and then the quality drops significantly
The x3 is impressive but I really like my max for audio and the look of the gopro. I'm holding out on the max 2 !
Yes Iikewise especially the colors. I hope gopro releases max 2 soon
Even though the Max was released 3 years before the X3, it's really impressive it can still challenge modern 360 cameras.
Absolutely. It’s still one of the best. In fact I’m wondering if that’s why GoPro has held off on max 2.
Had a GoPro for years. Know what I’ll buy to replace it.
But why is it 499.99 at bestbuy? If it was normally 399.99 3 years ago?

*Great comparison video!!*
I'm actually surprised at some of the differences, I expected the Max to do better than it did but maybe because I was thinkin of the One X2, not the newest X3.
Thanks buddy! You’re not alone in thinking that because until now comparisons I’ve seen have used a tripod. On a tripod, max IS better. But unless you’re shooting a virtual tour, for me the 3rd person view is more important and so is ease of use.
The GoPro Max really holds up well for an older camera, but I still prefer the new X3. Great comparison video Mic, and thanks for sharing.
Insta360 is made by a dictator country. Pour money to dictatorship, you will lose freedom!!!
Thanks buddy! And thanks for sharing your low light settings!
this is the exact reason i would get a 360 camera, do you feel you should get the insta 360 or are you happy with the max?

One of the best comparison videos I've ever seen, and I watch a lot of tech videos. On my way to get the Insta360, also awesome stair ride!
Thanks Clobby! I’m glad you found it helpful!
my use for these type of cameras is surfing/foiling. The GoProMax has a much smaller profile it feels smaller when held using a boom or handle while surfing. all the arguments made for X3 are relevant, hopefully GoPro comes out with Max2 and solves a lot of these challenges.
Yes I really hope they do release a max2.
Which one do you use the most ? I was thinking of getting th Max to use in single lens mode due to it's horizon balancing
Hi Mathieu. I usually use Insta360 Me Mode or the regular 360 video mode. I use them mostly because I want the 3rd person view with minimal work. 🙂
Great video, learnt a lot and still contemplating on whether I’m (also) getting an Insta360.
Thanks! Do you have Max now? What would you want to be better?
Thank you and take care.
how often would u say the x3 encounter overheating issue? thats quite a turn down for me, but the software and sharpness really attracts me
Ideally you should use usb 3.0 reader in a usb 3.0 slot on your PC
As for the electric unicycle, I feel it is safer than a skateboard although it is more dangerous than a bicycle.
Thanks I’ll try it. Is it for a motorcycle? Our only internal combustion vehicle is a v6 minivan 😅
Yes, assuming you know how to grade video (insta360 removed their LUT from their website). I thought it might be unfair if I used x3’s log mode.
@@360vroomers didn't know about the removal of the LUT but as I'm grading in Davinci with other LUTS no real issue for me. Very nice test and greetings from Germany!

When the shots are from above or far away and you're holding something in your hand that is not a selfie stick, what is it?
Hi Micha. Do you have a time stamp so I can know what you mean exactly? It might be one of my long monopods but I’m not sure.
Thanks, great review! I’ve been looking at the X3 for trail hiking. I see you have the Rode mic awesome!
We’re all the videos shot with the Rode side mic attached?
What is the exclusion distance? 12” ?
Hi nemesis8518! For the shots that used the sound from the x3, yes they were all with the Rode attached. When you say exclusion distance do you mean minimum stitching distance? It was able to stitch 16 inches along the stitch line with some distortion.

When using either for 360, do I have to tilt the camera or can it work pretty well just being 'upright'?? Thank you.
Thanks Brenowilliam! I’m hoping the max2 will be released this year. We’ll see!
It looks like the INSTA is a better overall camera, but, I still think that the GOPRO is a more user friendly and better served with cheaper accessories and software. I am still deciding though, after seeing your video, I will buy one of the two this weekend. Thanks for the great video.
FYI there’s a new insta360 camera out tomorrow. I will be posting a hands on review!
What an intelligent review! ty
I've heard that a big downside of the Insta 360 is that the lens scratches way too easily...anyone have any thoughts about this problem?
When is an updated new version of the Insta 360 coming out?
Thanks Yowzoe! You rock!
I wish you compared the audio of these with there regular mic such as wind noise the go pro is way better to muffle it
GoPro max has much better in-camera microphone. But x3 has external mic option
Thank you! I do not have to angle the x3 and just have it upright, right?
@@christianbattung2548 right. It can be any angle but vertical is also ok.
Do you have any stitching problems with the x3? Also is there a setting fix or calibration that can be done?
Hi what stitching issue are you encountering? In insta360 studio there are several settings for stitching. If you let me know your stitching issue I can suggest which setting you can try.
Excellent review. Thank you
Thank you very much! Glad it was helpful! Btw Insta360 has a new camera called x4 and I also compared it to x3 and gopro max here:
ua-cam.com/video/K4GSfKt0Dik/v-deo.html
Sorry to hear that. What happened to your one r?
Ok. I got it. Now can u me about durability? I mean quality of both 360 camera. Which is much last longer?
Both have an equally good track record of reliability.
I just want the best picture and video quality which one is the best even if it's not these 2. Advice please
Hi Oloveak! Great question. If you just want the absolute best video quality then it is the 1-inch 360 right now. Here is my review:
ua-cam.com/video/5C2HjoQpaH8/v-deo.html
It costs more but it has the best video quality for 360 cameras.
Excellent comparison. I'm serious considering a move from the GPM, but I have to say I will miss the single lens mode.
@@360vroomers That makes sense, thanks again.
Do either cameras have ability to use to access web apps and have a compartment to start drinks and cereal?
Yes but you have to activate it with unicorn poop. 🙃

Thanks!!!
I'm convinced. I'm definitely getting the Insta360
I’m glad you found it helpful!
Thank you! Why is the single lens mode from the X3 not as good compared to the Max although it is 4K? Can insta fix this with an upgrade?
Hi I believe it is the lens design. Max prioritized the middle of the lens so it has higher resolution in the middle. But this same design means it has less resolution toward the edge which is what is needed for 3rd person view. This is not possible to change with firmware.
Very Interesting Mic. GOPRO MAX is getting a bit too old now compare to Insta360 X3. X3 all the way for me 👍
In 2022/23 who will buy a GOPRO MAX..? Let's wait for GOPRO MAX 2 😊
Yes if they release it I will test again for sure
Can you load the GoPro video files into the Insta software and vice versa, like is there anything about the files that lock it to one particular software only etc? Can you track the gorpo image for stabilisation within the X3 software for example?
Hi Jaxson. One issue is that GoPro can only export 5.7k 360 videos in cineform, which is not compatible with insta360 software. If you export in 4k as h264 or h265 then yes the insta360 software can open it (for now).
this has to be at least 1tb of raw footage before you started cutting
.. what a great job of displaying TWO cameras strengths and weaknesses !
Thanks Kyle. It originally started out as a simple one-scene comparison. Then I thought, what about this..? So I shot some more. Then I thought again what about this…? All in all, I spent more than 10 days doing that, discarding a lot of previous footage 😂 I’m glad you liked the video!

Want to get an instan 360 camera for skiing & hockey. I'm having a hard time choosing between the Insta 360 RS with all the lens options or the X3. Which Insta 360 should I get?
Hey there hazelnut49! If you want simplicity and the convenience of an easier interface, go for x3. If you want versatility (convert from 360 to GoPro-like action cam) and upgradeability, I recommend RS or RS 1-inch 360. The latter is if you want the absolute best image quality.
@@360vroomers thank you. Will the Insta RS still stay relevant? Seams like the X3 is being pushed by 360 more lately.
@@360vroomers cool. Do you for see more one inch lenses or higher quality lenses added to the RS system in the future?
@@hazelnut49 yes I think insta360 will continue to create new lens modules for RS. Right now I don’t think there is a new 1inch sensor available but if there is a new Sony 1inch with a significant improvement, I think we’ll see a new 1 inch mod and 1 inch 360 mod.

Very nice. How do you think to compare the single lens mode with Gopro 11 or DJI action 3? Is it still good enough to go?
Thanks streetsphotography! Wow you must be psychic! See my next video this weekend! The single lens mode can't compete with the quality of the Hero 11 and Action 3, but I'm going to point out what you get in exchange, and you can see for yourself which one you prefer. :D
@@360vroomers Thank you so much. I'm waiting for your next video.
I have the x3, when you edit videos and reframe them I cant seem to keep the quality at 4k. Do I need to edit in adobe for best quality upload?
Would the x3 be great for recording soccer games?
The camera would be on a tripod sitting still in the hot sun recording beside the field?
The short answer is not really imho. Although x3 and max will be able to record and even track a player, the issue is that it is too far away to from the players to have good resolution for either camera. Couple of options:

I demo’d those 3 ways in this video starting at around 03:15 of the video) here: ua-cam.com/video/E6hnp9gDUU0/v-deo.html
Let me know if you have any questions!
I noticed in night mode with and without the X3 had better detail on the close up pavement.
It makes sense because x3 has slightly larger sensor (1/2.0 vs 1/2.3).
Alright I will try that next time
Definitely the review i'd like to see, watersports (windsurfing, wingfoiling, etc.)

Hi Elijah. Insta360 mobile app and insta360 studio (the desktop app) are both free. But you need an insta360 camera to get all the features of insta360 studio. And some features of the mobile app (such as some special effects) only work with newer insta360 cameras.

Which of these would be better for reading license plates after an incident?
Hi Paladinbr. Between these two, the X3. The max is more detailed only directly in front or directly behind the camera. However, if your purpose is to read license plates (i.e. maximize detail), I would get a non-360 camera because they have far more detail, e.g. GoPro Hero 11. But if you want one that is 360, then the most detailed one is 1-inch 360 ($799).
