Wow brother they are both just as good as the other to me, and your voice sounds great. I just bought the MXL R144 bc I am a po man on a budget, but the mic will make recording my Blues guitar songs much more fun, Thanks for your review.
Damn, that r144 really brought out the great low end in your voice but the neumann had all the presence. Mixed together they probably complement each other well but I favored the ribbon
I prefer the MXL. It sounds like it's going to be more flexible to eq than the Neumann which sounds great on its own but might be a hassle to deal with if your room isn't treated well. I could hear your room in your voice. That MXL is way more forgiving and I guess you can eq the same sound outta it as the Neumann
I preferred the MXL R144. They both sounded good, but I thought the Neumann sounded a bit aggressive and nasal-like. What I like about the R144 was how neutral it is. By today's standards it sounds dark but I think that's just because we are accustomed to very bright vocals. That being said, I think the R144 with just a small boost somewhere in the upper mids would sound perfect. This mic really flatters your voice!
Agree! I felt the Neuman was artificial sounding even digital. Weird. Would be easy to scale back in post. I wonder how well the R144 would fair in post with an eq boost in the upper mids.
I have to go with the TLM by Neumann 103. I just ordered the MXL R144 today and waiting on it to arrive sometime next week! I already own 2 MXL 990's and they're great for the money I spent. Good job Rev.
I don't have any context for your channel, and I don't even know if you make videos anymore. As far as the microphones go, I always tend to like ribbon microphones, because they have a certain smoothness to the sound that I find uniquely superior. Both mics sound 'good enough'. Honestly, the weak link in this particular video is your electronic piano sound. I think even a free software sampler piano sound would make such an improvement that comparing the two microphones is pointless.
I was so excited to try my mxl 144. However, it doesn't work. I hooked it up to my new zoom q8n 4k and it doesn't make a sound at all. And no, i didn't use phantom power. I turned the gain up to 10 and nothing. Am I doing something wrong? or is it just a lemon?
I have a MXL R144 that I use for vocals. Out of the box it can sound dark but add a touch of EQ and it shines while maintaining a full bottom. I do however think the Neumann sounded more articulate in this case. But don't let that sway you from the MXL as it can deliver that same articulation.
Despite the quality difference of the two mics, I think the placement of the MXL R144 seems a bit off center, so that your voice is more directed to the center of the Neumann. May be that's what makes the R144 a little bit muddy than it should.
I was ready to write the same... Should be better to place the mics side by side with you singing in the center. I love all kind of Neumann and I love ribbon mics. Is impressive how this cheap mic R144 is a good one, he is simply a marvel!!!
The MXL144 is very dark mic, and the sound of it lost in the mix that i don't like. The TLM102 sounds very good and clear with your voice. Don't use agressive noise gate it's makes you difficult to listen. Thanks for demonstration) Like and subscribe.
I think I prefer the Neumann for this particular application, although the MXL sounds nice. It would be interesting to hear the MXL on instrumentals though, particularly piano.
You need to give yourself more credit with your singing. It's lovely. In general I like ribbon microphones, my only concern is their figure-eight pattern and how they pick up from the rear. From what I've heard the Sterling ST170 ribbon microphone also sounds pretty good.
if just singing, will a good dynamic mic works? Like Senheisser e935 about $100 also? lol 😂 Budget-wise I can only get one, something to bring in stage and record at home. Or I can invest $100 for home recording condenser, and just use an ordinary mic whatever is available in church. thanks This video, the TLM is really clear & crisp.
I have used dynamic mics doing some demos. It just really depends on the council you’re going for.by the way I used a Shure sm57 to fo an entire recording. Vocal, drums, etc…
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah I heard good comments about how versatile SM57 is, hope I can try one day. Almost got the Shure 545s but swiped by higher auction bid. I guess sm57 is the next most identical to that.
The Neumann is a cardio patterned mic with a frequency range of 20hz to 20khz. Maximum speed is 143 db. The MXL R144 is a ribbon mic theat has very smooth mid range. It is a figure 8 mic. And it also has a high Spl capability. So it could capture just about any sound source. Drums horns guitars especially vocals. Hope this helps!

TLM 102. Fits the contour of your vocal tone

Thanks for commenting. I like both for different reasons. And it probably depends on the song on which one I would choose.

Thanks for subscribing. I got the MXL 770 at Christmas and it’s now one of my favorite mics. …. I have some more videos coming out soon. Stay tuned
@@recordingwithrev3496 man that's awesome! Glad to hear that. can't wait for the other videos. God bless

Praise God, lovely voice you have. Loved how you shared your faith together with your mic review

Hi. Mine worked right out of the box. It does need more gain. But it worked fine. So send it back and get another one.

I actually Like the MXL. Especially on smooth songs.

Hi thanks for your response. I will re-record and see if that makes a difference.

Thank you so much.👍🏾
picking up from the rear I think is a feature

Hey Rev. Tell us about the specs of the two mics.
