i think like you said, the conflict for vi became personal the second silco killed vander. her joining the enforcers is also very personal as i think the only reason she joined them is for cait, since cait is the only person vi has, so shes looking at it from a very personal perspective. it makes sense since shes been isolated for the past 6 years, she doesnt really feel like she has any connection even to the people of her past, or a community, except for cait. i also think the reason why vi wants to go after jinx is because deep down she doesnt want to kill jinx. when it came down to it, vi stopped caitlyn from taking the shot even thought over the past 3 episodes weve seen cait get the perfect shot in every instance. even when she shot jinx's finger off, it was deliberate. i also think cait doesnt want to kill jinx either, which is why she brings vi with her- because she knew vi would stop her and she did. caitlyn is overcome by grief and incredibly conflicted and irrational. i actually dont think ambessa will have trouble controlling her- i think caitlyn, in the state shes in, is very easily controllable and is seeking any kind of direction and ambessa is giving her just that- a clear target for her anger in the midst of all the chaos. cait is unsure of how to fill the hole her mother left, and how to step up in her role, and ambessa will direct her. also, like you mentioned its hard not to think of the current conflict going on in the world right now and relate it to the show. thanks for nuanced discussion as always, looking forward for the next two acts!
Agree with everything except Caitlyn not wanting to kill Jinx, I think the show has made it very clear she does. She was kidnapped and forced to watch a mentaly unstable murder kill her Mother. While also knowing that she had the opportunity to prevent it from ever happening. What kind of garbage daughter would not want to kill her Mother's murder ?
@@Venerable-nv9sk if caitlyn wants to kill Jinx, the wanted poster of Jinx would be dead or alive. But we can see the rat says topside wants jinx alive. Just an inside.
Personally, the fragile mental state that Caitlyn is in right now does make her malleable and vulnerable to outside influence that contributes to her goal to kill jinx. However, Caitlyn is a smart woman and has bucket loads of empathy, as seen throughout Season 1. I don't know how, but I reckon Caitlyns blind rage will wear off, and she'll come about her wits again when she realises what Ambessas intentions were all along, inevitably turning on her. This is just a theory of mine and I personally love Caitlyn heal-turn this season as it gave me chills. However, I would be even more satisfied to see her unmask Ambessa for who she truly is and redeem herself.
"This is your home, this is your family." I think to some degree, Vi feels almost like she was betrayed by the undercity as well as Jinx?? They both changed so much while she was in prison dreaming of getting back to them, becoming versions of themselves she didn't recognize, more dangerous and less caring and worst of all loyal to Silco, the monster who took her family away from her. She complained to the brothel worker back in episode 5 of season 1 about how no one even tried to fight Silco during his rise and immediately after this attacked Sevika, calling her a traitor. And I think there's almost a hope that if she gets rid of Jinx and the generals who worked for Silco, she might be able to preserve some part of the sister and the city she has nostalgically clung onto? Or at least shatter the funhouse mirror versions of them that are constantly haunting and mocking her
I think Vi is heavily motivated by guilt, for "creating" Jinx, for Cait losing her mom. I think Cait kind of exploited that by asking her to join the enforcers despite the compromising position it puts her in. Cait very much so wants Vi to prove she's "one of the good ones." Ambessa also uses Cait's rage and need for justice to facilitate the war with the Underground. I think that's a major theme in the first act: leveraging other people's need for rectification to get them to do what you want.
@@ourcrazystupidpodcast When you guys say that you don't feel that the show has been critical of Heimerdinger, what you're really saying is that you don't feel as though he's been chastised for his culpability to the numerous issues that have happened under his watch. Because the show has been pretty overt in it's criticism and scrutiny of the man, his disposition and the consequences of his actions. He's been critical of himself too. He's the first person on the entire show to be self-reflective and attempt to make changes for the betterment of the Undercity. Think about it for a second. Heimerdinger got ousted from the council directly because of his shortcomings and lack of leadership. His inability to be forthcoming about his past experiences with mages help foster Jayce and Viktor's drive ot fast track Hex-Tech. His obliviousness to the back-handed politicking going around him in the Medard's opera house was a scathing visual indictment of his naivete and complacency. The scene was to evoke the image of Nero fiddling while Rome burned. There was his rejection when he went down into the Undercity and saw first hand how his ineffective leadership help facilitate those horrid conditions. So, it isn't that the show isn't critical of his character, because the show IS critical of his character, other characters are critical of his character and he's critical of himself. It sounds to me like you're looking for someone to outright rebuke and then hold him to account for his role in the instability. But, isn't that what Jayce did when he voted to have him ousted from the council? And saying that the people of Zaun don't have enough "rage" toward Piltover is wild work at it's peak. Lest you forget that the entire story opens in the aftermath of a failed revolution in which Powder and Violet's parents were killed on that bridge? And it's arguable that things were nowhere near as bad then for the citizenry as they are in the 7 year period in which the brunt of the events of the show take place. Yeah, people are mad. But I'm not sure what you're looking for at present. Remember about less than 1/3 of the population during the American revolution was fired up enough to participate. Zaun is in chaos, without leadership, direction or even the means to revolt... for now. But that's gonna change and you're going to get your wish. That's not a spoiler. If you've been paying close attention to the images during the opening it should be fairly obvious what's ahead.
My thoughts on Caitlyn are that she is genuinely an opposite of jinx when it comes to rage and grief, jinx becomes extremely scattered mentally, while cait(like in the first episode) becomes singularly focused on the cause of her pain. Also you’re right about Vi it is jarring, however when your sister shoots off WMD’s and kills lots of people i think everyone will react differently!! LOVE THE PODCAST!!!!
Oh I just found the perfect podcast! Thank you algorithm! (for once) Y’all are discussing the same exact thoughts I had while watching act one especially w Caitlyn. I would side eye certain things she would say during season 1 and it’s fascinating to see the show sort of address that just because she felt something for this one Zaunite doesn’t mean that her bias didn’t go away completely. So, im interested to see what the writers are cooking up for her character and I hope they handle it well considering the current times. Vi is my favorite character is Arcane so to see her become a cop wasn’t it for me😭 but it seems she’s conflicted and confused and the guilt doesn’t help with that. So im excited to see where her character goes w all these conflicting feelings. Yall are discussing the politics of one of my fav shows which i feel a lot of ppl glance by in the show, so Im glad to see this season put it in people’s faces and Im happy yall are discussing it. It's surreal that Caitlyn, one of the most understanding and peace seeking up-sider is seen like that. Ex: In the middle of all the sadness, anger and hate that comes from losing a Mother in the way that she did she had the presence of mind to make it clear that the attack was made by a single deranged individual (Jinx) and that they should not flood the undercity with cops as retaliation.
So glad to see someone else draw the parallels between the show and the conflict that shall not be named. I'm a political science major and made the connection instantly while watching the new episodes. I love the discussions you have on the podcast!
I think we gotta remember that Caitlyn’s “desire” to help Zaun from S1 was only to spite her mother. The second her mother died, it was game over for Zaun and she hopped straight back into her home of privilege. She was always going to have the protection of Piltover no matter what, and unfortunately Vi had moments of being naive in believing Caitlyn was ever truly on their side.
Also, idk about everyone else but Heimerdinger heavily reminds me of Yoda: small, old, cute little creature that ignores a bigger problem within only to get completely screwed in the end, and nobody really criticizes them 😭
On the topic of Caitlyn, I will point out that in the council scene following Cassandra's funeral, she STILL argues that they shouldn't send an army of enforcers into Zaun because there are good people down there who would get hurt. It's only after the chembaron's attack on the memorial that we see the first signs of anger or disdain toward someone other than Jinx. Even then, the scope of her anger seems mostly to extend to "Jinx + Silco's chembarons and their soldiers." They aren't the "good people." OBVIOUSLY "good people" would never work for someone like that, right?? It makes me wonder if her arc next Saturday is going to be her still trying to protect the "good people," but her list of who counts as that continues to get smaller and smaller as opposition grows in the undercity and Ambessa whispers in her ear
Can’t believe it took for season 2 for people to finally realize VI is a sell out, she never cared about anyone she just wanted revenge. She was in jail didn’t know who was still alive or not but you know what she did know whatever’s going on it’s Silko’s fault. Comfortably overlooking that silko is a byproduct of piltovers cruelty he wouldn’t exist if not for their actions making them work in mines with basically no oxygen. Something yall skipped over your right the people in the lanes don’t have anger for their oppressors and silko knew that, life for them had gotten better and people got complacent I’m not saying he’s some great leader all I’m saying is he knew who he was fighting with and what he was fighting for and he had to make decisions to insure a future because majority of the people were fine with the harsh treatment they were receiving before silko took control of the enforcers
In my pov, Caitlyn isn't originally xenophobic since we can see her trying to get out from her mom's reach. But she didn't realise peace doesn't come free. When she lost her mother, with rage and grief, she continued this circle of violence that she disagrees in s1. Also hating, dehumanising undercity is not unfamiliar to her because she's surrounded by the most privileged brackets of this privileged city. I am pretty sure that, she will regain her original self, will eventually learn the feelings of zaun people who lost their dear ones to the enforcers but can only seek peace with topside. Especially, she will learn to understand how Ekko felt. I don't think Vi, who is kidnapped by the underling of silco and prisoned about six years in stillwater will consider undercity which is once ruled by silco and his people as a home. So i am not surprised or disappointed by her becoming enforcer. For Vi, it's not a place that's home, it's people.
First let me say i own and have listened to more kendrick than Drake, my 10 year old daughter loves kendrick and hates drake and thats cause of who shes listened to with me and because of the beef, ive seen him live and havent seen drake, and I've seen mosdef live a half a dozen times who famously said drake isnt hip hop... i used to basically follow him around the western usa in high school and college, one summer i followed the hippie group Phish around along with a bunch of hippie greatful dead following turned phish following people, all because the Roots opened for their tour one year... anyway, i also think good kid mad city is the best album between the two, which is what kendrick is good at, best at really, introspective emotionally empathetic writing. What hes not great at is what i would consider slick written battle rap type writing, which until this battle was always judged as much on how slick your writing was than how hard the disses were, even story of adidon the harshest of tracks, he doesnt just say Drakes insecure with himself or hes white and tries to be black, he talks about his hair not napping enough, he opens it with a wole stars and moon scheme and which are all entendres and a baby splitting the pie, bird man and a kid making him not as rich as he claims, he doesnt just say drakes hiding a kid but sets up a whole canada USA border patrol scheme to do it, and that to me is great writting when writing a diss track. But its just not something kendricks great at, he didnt get a pulitzer for having crazy word play and entendres, and honestly the fact the album damn is the one he won it for and not his first couple albums just shows the influence reputation has. I didnt vote for trump, and if you'd like to hear a similar opinion from a couple Black Americans who i can promise you dislike trump as much as anyone, watch lost in vegas reaction to the beef. I was rooting for kendrick, at the same time i dont want anything he writes to be turned into something far greater than it is because of what a whole lot of people who never once listened to Mr Morale, to be telling eachother how much greater the Kendrick tracks are while youtubers turn poorly connected entendres into the most complex thing ever written... theres going over your head cause somethings extremely complex, theres also going over your head cause you throw a hey hey hey in there with nothing to connect it to Cosby or sleeping with under age girls, and relying on youtubers to connect it and let everyone know for you, all while the entire country says hes winning cause drakes tracks sound to good and it shouldn't but should strictly be about lyrics, then completely change their mind once Not Like Us dropped. Ignoring the conversation with a non existent daughter since they both made shit up, and aknowledging that while he claims he wrote them given his past theres at least a chance he didnt, but if it was drake, he simply wrote in a more slick way, his entendres were very well written and connected and his punchlines were all written in a clever way, not just "I hate you" or "i wish you would die." Even his extremely well written punchline, the A minor bar, was rebuttled by drake with an entire musical note scheme, and drake should get credit for that, and when theres not a victim to point to, those that were came out immediately defending him, well my daughter shouldnt be convinced hes a pedaphile because thats apparently what schools full of kids throughout the country think. Also, when drake was at his highest and kendrick was nobody yet, he not only featured on hiis very first album but he took kendrick on tour with him, to promote his very first album, getting futures music played outside atlanta and the club was more than getting drake played in it, who lets be honest, didnt need it anyway, and rick ross wouldnt have been heard from in at least a decade without the tracks drake featured on, so seeing them all at the same time come after him wasnt fair, thats all....
