What's the difference? The TVR / TWR Story

  • A few weeks ago I was driving along the motorway in Britain and saw a van with TVR on the side of it might have been TWR, and it went by so quickly that I missed it, but it got me thinking about both TVR and TWR, and you’ve asked for videos about both of these car companies in the past so I thought it might be fun to a mashup where I go through the histories of both TVR and TWR together, sort of chronologically. So, let's find out together where TVR got its name, what the heck happened with the Russian investment in the 2000s and what happened to TWR.

I was surprised that you didn't mention Peter Wheeler, who owned TVR during the 1990s and was responsible for the Griffith and Chimaera, probably the high point in TVR's history.

TWR's Australian operation was brought by Holden, but the same entity was later brought back by the family, now known as the Walkinshaw Group. It has a large factory at Clayton, Victoria employing 700 people converting cars(mostly pickups) and running motor racing teams in Australia and Europe. Tom Walkinshaw's sons run the company today.

I was in the engine shop at TWR back in 1985 building the Jaguar XJR-6 Group C engine. quite a culture shock after finishing an apprenticeship at a Triumph Stag specialist.
I had the rare privilege to not only drive a road going Group A Rover SD1 Vitesse with next seasons twin plenum race engine in it but also Toms own heavily modified XJS 6.1.
Tom and TWR were repsonsible for so much in top level motorsport and prestige motor cars. The Metro 6R4 engine was developed there (a later form going on to replace the V12 Jaguar engine in the XJ220); under the skin the XJ8/DB7 was evolved by TWR from the XJS; the so called 'Dream Team' in F1 who ultimately ended up at Ferrari with Michael Schumacher was formed by Walkinshaw during his Benetton and Arrows time; the Arrows A23 in its various incarnations became one of the longest running chassis in modern F1 history.
the big lesson from my time there was "its not how good you are, its how good you cheat"

  • @johnyossarian1135

A team up between these two in the 90s would have been mental. The Cerebera would have probably made it to le mans in some form, arrows might have had something better than the Yamaha and Hart lumps in the back of the car (no disrespect to Brian Hart, Gary Anderson said he's a lovely and talented man but the engines in the arrows cars weren't great) and with Peter Wheelers dog around they would have been able to bounce back from losing John Barnard as a designer. A TVR GT squad run by people who know more than a bunch of blokes who love speed would have boosted sales and having a tangible product would have given TWR a boost as well. Don't know how the prost situation would have gone down in this alternate timeline though since that was a moneypit no matter what

Excellent show as always! One thing that I wanted to mention, however, is regarding your PSA about blood pressure. I have struggled with high blood pressure most of my adult life. I've also struggled with my weight. However, even after I lost a massive amount of weight and my blood pressure temporarily dropped, it ended up going back up anyway. In addition to being a certified car nut, I also love cycling.
I think a big part of that is simply because riding a bike is kind of like the exercise equivalent of driving. I've made a commitment to myself to ride at least 30 miles a week even when the weather gets bad in the wintertime. Given that that is my goal, I do try to double it whenever possible increasing.
My level of cardiovascular fitness by riding my bike has paid massive dividends in my blood pressure over just the few months I've been doing it. I have been riding since May. So in only about 3 months, my doctor had to reduce my blood pressure medicine from the second highest dose to the lowest dose. I'm hoping that in a few more months of riding, I'll be able to completely get off of blood pressure medicine entirely.
My blood pressure with no medicine right now is only in the borderline high range, which is better than it has been since I was 17. I'm 49 now.
I just wanted to add to that because we all live very hectic lives, and sometimes we don't realize the importance of moving around. I'm not a fitness Guru or expert by any stretch of the imagination. But we do tend to live a sedentary lifestyle with our cars and home delivery and all that kind of stuff, especially with all the hours we have to work just to make ends meet anymore.
I'm also somebody who hates exercise. I never got the endorphin rush or the runner's high or anything like that when I would exercise before, but riding a bike is so different. At least for me, this is the exercise that works! I'm actually excited to go for a bike ride every evening around my neighborhood, and on weekends, I take longer rides on the bike trail. I just want to encourage everybody to get moving some way in any way that you enjoy. It makes you feel so much better it makes you sleep so much better it reduces if not completely eliminating the stress and anxiety of everyday life and it really can help to lower your blood pressure and extend your Healthy Life.
I know this is way off topic for an automotive video, but I want more of us Car Guys to survive long enough to be a burden on the system we have spent our entire lives paying into.

A great video and appreciate the PSA at the end. On a side note; one big nail in the TVR coffin (remember, it's not the cough that carries you off, it's the coffin they carry you off in) was the 1999 introduction of the Porsche Boxster. More capable, safer, and with the Porsche shield as its agent, the Boxster cast a spotlight on the exceedingly crude nature of the contemporary TVR Griffith, Chimaera, and Cerbera.

The doctor informed me that I was in hypertensive crisis and had the highest blood pressure he’d ever seen. After much medication and lifestyle changes it had come down but too late unfortunately. I have since experienced the unfortunate situation of having a major artery start an internal dissection, the most common cause of which is prolonged high blood pressure.

I love a lot of your content and this TVR/TWR mashup was certainly an interesting concept.
My only consistent feedback about your videos is that spending a little more time researching pronunciation would be great. Sometimes you get it spot on (e.g. Patrick Le Quemant) but Cerbera and Ebbw Vale shouldn't have taken too much effort to get right. Similarly with Giorgietto Giugiaro I seem to recall you always get his first name spot on then give us nothing like his last name.
Keep up the good work though. This is just a reflection to help to make some great videos even better.

Interesting video. I was amused with the connection between TVR and TWR as I wondered where you would find one. The TWR story about what happened to the XJR-14 (Mazda, Porsche) and the XJR-15 (Nissan) I had never heard before, amazing! Where I was in 2021 to get the Jab you had to have your blood pressure tested along with other routine things. I too was high, higher than yours but I had expected it since it runs in both my parents history. They gave me some pills and it dropped in a couple of days to borderline okay.

As a Cerbera (Surbera 😉) owner, also surprised Peter Wheeler didn't get a higher profile, without him TVR would have died in the eighties, but entertaining non the less, thank you.

Hello, great video. However, I think that there was an even faster TVR model than the Typhon, at least theoretically. It was called the Cerbera Speed 12, a 1000hp GT1 race car for the road. It wasn't really a production car, but one example does exist.

Since I was „adjusted“ to 130/80 all is fine, never had a headache since. So, yes, you‘re spot on, go and check.

For many TVR owners, Trevor Wilkinson was the genesis of the company but Peter Wheeler was the Moses who led the company to the promised land. The cars made under his ownership were mostly simply brilliant. I'm amazed he's not name checked!
And the most powerful and fastest TVR was the Speed 12, one of which (W112BHG) was road going. I chased it up a runway in my Chimaera and almost got out at 120mph because it was going away so fast, I thought I must have stopped.
