- Huntsville, Texas makes for a great weekend getaway from Houston. Located only about an hour north of Houston (depending on the traffic), Huntsville makes for a great day trip or even a full weekend getaway. Here are some of the things you can see and do in Huntsville, Texas.
1. Downtown Huntsville - Downtown Huntsville has a remarkable downtown area with many great shops and restaurants. The Old Town Theatre is also a great attraction in downtown.
2. Sam Houston Memorial Museum - The Sam Houston Memorial Museum goes deep into the life of the legendary Sam Houston. You can learn more about his life and how he helped paved the way to the formation of the Republic of Texas. Outside the museum are many historic buildings including the house which he and his third wife Margaret built.
3. Sam Houston State University - The campus of Sam Houston State University is quite beautiful at all times of the year and is worth a stroll. You can also catch a Bearkats football game there in the fall.
4. Sam Houston Gravesite - The final resting place of Sam Houston can be found over at Oakwood Cemetery just north of downtown.
5. Farmhouse Café & Bakery - For some of the best food in Huntsville, check out the Farmhouse Café & Bakery for some great Texas and southern cooking with made-from-scratch entrees especially the chicken fried steak.
6. Texas Prison Museum - Huntsville is known as the Prison City as there are several prisons in the city area. The Texas Prison Museum is a place to visit to learn more about the history of Texas prisons.
7. Sam Houston Statue - Near the IH-45 freeway is the Sam Houston Statue which looks out at the freeway standing tall at 67 feet into the air. It is worth stopping here either on the way in or out of Huntsville to admire the statue and even snap a selfie.
8. Huntsville State Park - For great outdoor recreation, Huntsville State Park is the place to go. The park offers a lot of camping, fishing, hiking, and swimming in Lake Raven.

Absolutely! I have another freeway video coming out this Thursday! I can see I-69 being completed at some point. It would definitely help international travel between Canada and Mexico.
