Bit about injector flow causing carbon build up isn’t correct. Fsi is direct injection so fuel goes straight into the cylinder instead of the intake. In non direct injection engine the fuel keeps the valves clean, in direct injection you don’t get that. Carbon build up is caused by contaminants in air from PCV and EGR systems. It is a problem in direct injection engines though, not just the s6 and not just Audi.
Agreed - Anything you add to the fuel will have exactly zero effect on the valve carbon deposits. The fuel never interacts with the backs of the valves the way it does in non-direct injected engines. Any kind of fuel additive is basically just snake oil. You need an air intake-based cleaner like CRC 05319 GDI IVD Intake Valve & Turbo Cleaner. There are a ton of videos on here about how to to it. Follow the instructions on the can. It's very easy. I've done it on both of my vehicles. It definitely works but you'll swear you have destroyed your engine after you do it. SUPER SMOKEY AND RUNS TERRIBLY FOR A FEW MINUTES! The easiest way to wedge your gas pedal (read instructions on can) is to put your seat all the way back, cut a stick long enough to reach the pedal, then scoot your seat forward to wedge the stick. Even easier with power seats. A quick blip of the seat switch makes it easy to give it just a little more gas. I would like to mention for everyone who is watching: I own a 2009 Audi S6, bought it from my roommate for $10k who bought it from a projects guy in Oceanside, CA, where it spent most of its life. I've owned it for almost a year now, and just ticked it over to the 100,000 mi mark. I've ran into all of the issues the guy mentions here- I have replaced all coils/plugs, replaced the intake manifold with the JHM Motorsport option, which I highly recommend (it has Audi's 2nd version, metal flaps instead of plastic ones, helping the issue.) I've also replaced the high-pressure fuel pumps. This was all done by a shop- I have done the oil myself 4 times by now, and also replaced the alternator belt (called the accessory belt) also by myself, without taking the radiator frame completely off. Altogether roughly $4-5k in overall preventative maintenance. The misfiring and unhealthy power characteristics is exactly what symptoms will surface from these issues, I can confirm from my ownership experience. The only thing he didn't mention that I feel like is important to know about the S6's maintenance which I will have to get done on mine: is the upper oil pan. Most oil leaks from this car are not a huge concern and are likely not an extremely expensive fix, but the upper oil pan from what I've been told requires an engine-out service. Other things I will need to have done: Windshield washer pump is not working, the left headlight intermittently doesn't work ("Dipped left headlight"), excessive camber wear (very likely upper control arms), and front pads/rotors. I will also probably want to look at the timing chains if I have that engine-out service done. Other than that, it is running and working perfectly. I daily drove it for 3 weeks when my friend borrowed my Acura, and have put nearly 10k miles on it since I owned it. I put 91-octane in it every single time, and I do max it on occasion. And YES, I do plan to put a louder exhaust on mine. If you do buy one of these cars, also buy some sort of OBD scanning tool that reads VW/Audi's VAGCOM protocol. I recommend OBDEleven, I bought a pro-version reader from ebay for $50. It is a NECESSITY. When test-driving it, try the three different trans modes. I use D for cruising, S for fun, and I rarely use the manual mode... pretty much just to hear the engine on a downshift if I want. If you're seeking a quick manual shift paddle-shift car, you will likely not want this car. If you're afraid of the maintenance: I bought $21 rear brake pads from O' Reilly's and replaced them myself in 2 hours. I replaced the alternator belt(a $17 part) in about 5 hours, a long time but I was constantly googling and being careful with taking stuff apart. I'm sure that's how long book time is, which would have been $600 in labor if I took it to a shop. The oil can be done in just under an hour once you know how to do it. YES, there are more expensive repairs you will want a shop to do, such as the intake manifold and any engine out service. But if you are a sharp car owner, and you have a VAGCOM reader, you'd be surprised how much money you can save. He mentions the E60 M5, a car I also adore... the Inline-5 and V10 engine note I've always loved and the functionality/sportiness of a sedan. I would love to drive an E60 M5 someday, no doubt... but of the two, the S6 is the car I would OWN.
I'll throw out there that one other common issue is leaking cam phaser seals. Very quick and easy to DIY. Check those first if you are dripping oil. It drips back and can make it look like a leaking oil pan gasket. It's hard to see without being under it on a lift, but the cam seals can be seen under the hood, or at least felt by hand if you reach back there.

Have had an 08 S6 for two years. In that time, I’ve replaced: the intake manifold, oxygen sensors(twice), replaced the Air injection pump, and did a carbon cleanup. I love this car, it’s been a bit expensive, but worth it IMO.

It's a twin turbo.... makes the same HP stock as the V10 but allows for tuning and turbo upgrades that allow insane power gains. You CANT do anything to make the V10 faster. A twin turbo V6 on the other hand, just a stage 2 tune will gain 130hp+ and turbo upgrades with stage 3 file will produce 800+ hp.
@@imob9657 you absolutely can do things to make the V10 faster- my auto mechanic said he was able to figure out how to unlock hidden RS6 features in the car's ECU, such as fuel enrichment, which by itself will beef a few dozen more HP in the high rev ranges. Computer mods alone I'm sure can harness hundreds of HP just by itself, and I'm not exaggerating. The main reason it's not done is because of how ridiculous the engine packaging is... a lot of serious mods or even minor ones would require several hours of labor and extensive computer knowledge to tear the car apart, and make sure the car's computer doesn't freak out. Not just with newer cars but the reason car modders adore smaller engines is because of the turbos, ECU mods are typically less annoying and there's less at stake when things go wrong (10 coil packs versus 6). There's also a lot more part sharing with cars in that range, the S6's gearbox is only shared with other executive sedans and I dont think a beefier gearbox or manual swap has been tried. The 4F platform S6 is a tough car to work on. But given enough money and expertise- someone could absolutely get a lot more HP out of the motor. But I honestly will want to leave it mostly as is- because the way Audi set it up is to make sure it lasts and doesn't grenade itself. Its plenty fast and a thrill to drive as it is, it just needs to be LOUDER...!
@@Medessec he is lying to you. Very few mechanics know how to code ECU and write tunes. You don't just find hidden stuff in the ECU you have to unlock it and rewrite the software.
Nicely done and covers most of the bases. The one potential mind melter that you failed to mention are the timing chain tensioners. While the V10 hasn't suffered as badly as the 04-06 4.2 V8s they do still suffer failures sometimes. The repair cost to that is nothing short of staggering.... hmmm... do I want to fix the timing on my V10 Audi S6 or buy a small island in the tropics? ;-) Steering column control module failures were also an issue on the C6 A6/S6 line. Only other comment (which has been covered by others) is that the driving style doesn't impact your carbon build up. It's the fact that the injectors don't wash over the valves to keep them clean. A catch can might help prolong the service intervals although a nicely functioning stock PCV system doesn't do a terrible job. The water / meth injection into the air intake path sounds plausible to me if starting on a freshly de-carboned engine. I'd be hesitant on a high mileage car as I don't want any of the carbon deposits going through the system and potentially causing other issues.
Good video, only misleading comments are about driving the car hard, this will not reduce carbon buildup. I've got 125K on my 2008, I bought it with 40K eight years ago. These cars are a blast to drive and make great sounds. JHM is the shop that has paid some attention to this platform, have some good mods available.
a 35-50 dollar oil catch can kit is all you need to fix carbon build up. i have a passat with an fsi engine, and ive never had to worry about the carbon build up problem on the intake valves, as long as i had the catch can installed
I just happened upon this video as I was looking for information on issues that these cars have. I know the 4.2l V8 cars have their tensioner, chain, chain-guide issues so I figured this car wouldn't be any different. My father wants a cool, non-flashy car with some power to drive daily and the S6 fits his needs and wants. The newer ones are either trashed or they're still super expensive. I think your video convinced me to find him a clean C6 S6. Thank you for the time and effort you put into this video for us looking for these niche cars.

Most everything he says is correct. Bought car on the cheap at 75k four years ago and first thing I did was miltek exhaust. At 85k had to replace bushings, control arms, rotors. At 95k really got into the engine. Had to replace some vacuum lines, water pump, had “fluid migration” = coolant was leaking onto wiring harness and traveling ECwU turned out ok which was the main thing, replaced some o rings near the valley, did a carbon clean, and swapped for some aftermarket lambo headers. Rough start and idle went smooth as a cucumber and felt like a completely new car. To this dudes point nothing to major but even the smallest of things can cost a shit ton. Note: my S6 is not my daily just the date night and country road fun car.

When you mess with a C6 S6 or A6, you will be in for headaches due to the electrical problems this car always seems to have. Your dash will light up with warnings out of the blue. Tail light warnings, when they work, Emergency Brake warning, yet it works perfectly fine.

I have a short commute, so it doesn't allow me much time to rev, so I think I need to take it out for longer drives now and then to give it some rev's. Useful threads to include as well! @@jy5960 Actually, I found an issue with it that I couldn't diagnose and the seller had no ability to rectify either. It had a weird miss happening when I rev'd it out over 5300 rpm--it would actually stutter and miss, then would be fine higher in the rev range. It happened fairly often, and I didn't have the funds or the patience to pursue the cause. If it hadn't been for that, I would definitely have kept it, because the car is amazing. I have not read of this issue anywhere on the forums, so it appears to have been unique to this car. I'm still driving my old D2 S8, just passed 300K km and still running strong. Good luck with your car, and make sure to test it out through the whole rev range just to be sure.
My 2010 Toyota Sequoia had an intake manifold issue similar to this which required the entire thing to be replaced. Like this It didn't "kill" the car, but essentially it drove in limp mode and couldn't get above 40 mph. Getting it fixed was about $2800. Now, Toyota being Toyota, issued a TSB and warranty extension on it and would replace it for free on any vehicle under 10 years old and under 150k miles. Good luck getting Audi to offer up something like that on a known problem issue.
I have an obsession with v10s and idk why. I'm still debating on buying my dream car a 2010 m6 with the last year of the v10 but damn the maintenance is killer.
Some good info here but also some nonsense. The whole chat about winding the engine out do that the larger amount of fuel can clean the intake valves? These engines aren't port injection... The fuel isn't introduced before the back of the intake valve, they are direct injection, the fuel nozzle is inside the cylinder. This is exactly why carbon build up happens to begin with. No matter how hard you drive it the fuel isn't going to magically find its way out of the combustion chamber to clean the back of the intake valves.

Another thing to watch for is the transmission, the 400 lb•ft torque absolutely kills the old 6-speed step-tronic transmission if you launch it too much, other than that this car is pretty much bulletproof. I’m looking to sell mine in 5-6 months because I want to move up to a S7.
Got myself one of these for a pretty good price. It has a new OEM intake manifold, and timing chains. Just need to fix the darn oil+coolant leaks and it should last me a good while. Only got 73k miles on the whole car.
So this is much more reliable than the M5? I love the sound and performance of the V10 but I the constant horror stories and credit card suicide trying to keep them running scares the ish out of me 😟
Significantly more reliable than an E60 M5, yes. I wouldn’t even consider an E60 unless I had $4000-6500 worth of repair/preventative maintenance funds. Whereas a well maintained S6 is typically free of such eye wateringly expensive maintenance items.
Nice video but remember its a v10 so it will drink alot of fuel. Its not a economy car so be prepared to pay for fuel abit more often than you would on a regular car.
Actually seafoam works if done properly , drop 1/4 in the oil crank , half or full bottle in fuel tank and the run a bottle in the vacuum lines . I had 2013 s4 always this kind of maintenance since I bought it , till the end is when I sold it at 95k miles .. I did this routine every 10k miles and always added half a bottle in the fuel tank every oil change . ( I did this on all three of my vehicles ) a mini cooper which is know for high carbon clean up , my s4 and my Honda s2000 . This routine added to your normal interval maintenance will help alot in the long run . It will actually save you alot more going to the shop and doing a walnut blaster ( although a walnut blaster is a very well know solution ) doing this specific routine will help prevent the build up . To also add my s4 was high modified and we all know highly modified vehicles will have the most carbon build up. Never looked back at adding seafoam to all my vehicles .
Nice video, however your theory of carbon build up is incorrect. Instead of the strength of the fuel spray causing/removing carbon build up, it is actually temperatures that either allow for or reduce oxidation of the carbon. I'd recommend watching engineering explained latest video about carbon build up. Otherwise, great video!
I'm very close to buying the 08 or 09 S8. Did the engine get better in that last model yr? I know the 07 was the first yr for the V10 and normally the kinks have to be worked out.
I had a retainer pin drop from the intake and get caught on the back of one of the valves, and another catch a bunch of plastic on the back of another valve. I'd say I got lucky, flap delete is a must on these cars

This definitely isn’t a great first car truthfully, unless you have a LOT of disposable income if/when it needs something or you have serious mechanical skills and access to a lift.
Others may steer you away from an S6 in general but I think that’s a steal. Budget some money for future maintenance with an independent shop that knows them well, and enjoy. I’d go for it.
The Mercedes M272 (V6 350) and M273 (V8 550) have this same intake manifold issue, there are replacement billet flaps you can buy for bout $160 rather than buying a a brand new intake manifold (anywhere between $500-$750) is there no metal option to replace the plastic flaps with on these Audi's?
I haven’t been able to find anyone that has done so, nor replacement flaps you can purchase for the S6. If that was an option I doubt anyone would be buying the JHM manifolds or OEM replacements. Just another example of there being a minimal amount of aftermarket support for them.

Great video. Next one should be about all of the benefits we've gleaned from switching to the full JHM suite. Regarding carbon buildup, there's a solution, but the company that produces the solution hasn't been great with marketing. Hopefully we can remedy that and let the car world know we exist.
I don’t care what you say or what anyone else says the Tiptronic Transmissions on these cars are absolute garbage and when they break you’re looking at 5 to 6K minimum to get it done if you want to get it done 100% correctly from a shop certified to work on Audis you’re looking at $7000 minimum
By "when" you must mean "if"? Ran one up to like 185,000 miles without a hiccup, sold it operating flawlessly. Haven't heard of many cases whatsoever about transmission failures. Seems to have even less issues than the later DSGs lol.

Luckily Audi picked it up for her and fixed it under warranty. I didn’t have that luxury. I didn’t even get my transmission fixed tbh. Once I called around an got some quotes I was floored. All I needed was simple little sensor replaced, that was it, and for it to cost that much just seemed like a massive scam. So I sold it for close to what I paid for it. Great car for the first 3 months.
Found one for sale down the road for $14,000 with 121,xxx miles on it. I’ll have to check the car fax a bit more with it having 20 ish service reports and I think 2 owners. What would you say? Something to look at or stay away from?
That sounds like a fair/average price as long as it’s in good shape. Nice that’s it’s only had two owners as well. I’d avoid any S6/8 that’s been passed around too many times lol. I’d also have a PPI done at an Audi shop that knows the V10 well and if it checks out, go for it.

The carbon build up section is incorrect and completely misleading. infact driving these cars hard could actually cause MORE carbon build up. The carbon buildup is from the pcv and egr system contaminants on the back side of the valve because there is no fuel to wash them away as fuel is squirted directly into the combustion chamber. Driving hard creates more crankcase ventilation therefore more blowby into the intake manifold. The Audi pcv system isn't too bad but they need to be run warm. This is the same for most direct injection engines. Short regular trips is the absolute killer.
Bought a 3.2 FSI Cabriolet. Didnt know the intake was broken when I bought it. Am still on the hunt for a second hand one. If your buying one of these make SURE the unit has been replaced and save yourself the hassle!!!

I drive only Audis all my life, and this one is the best buy ever. I didn't even know what i bought until I started living with it, never even seen V10 before. In 3 years repaired - 1 injector, 1 spark plug, cabine ventilator, 1 xsenon balast and cleaned carbon inside the engine. It does not brake, just drive it normal ( it's not a race car ) and it will go 1M miles 100%. Many people say that those models of Audi S6 and S8 are the last good cars that audi made. My wife has an Audi A4 2.0tdi 2016- with that shit every month something is wrong, and the driving is terrible. oh, and: don't buy with bang&olufsen and ceramics brake and you will be ok, those are brutally expensive. Every service you need 11,5L of oil, oil filter and 2 bigass air filters and you are good to go for 30k km :)))

You have no idea about FSI engines. There is NO fuel being sprayed on the top of the valves. Hence DIRECT INJECTION. Please learn the basics before posing as a subject matter expert.

I had a 2007 S6 , Loved it, loved the sound , but the transmission was always its downfall. Sluggish at times denying down shifts, but sometimes it was ok. Very slow gear changes in manual mode. After I sold it I purchased a 2011 Audi A8L 4.2L and absolutely love it. Yes it has less HP, but I swear it feels faster with its zf8 speed trans and of course superior ride quality as the S6 was very over sprung in stock form. Next car in my sites is a 2015 A8L 4.0T soon. The 4.0T is a absolute beast and very underrated in HP by Audi. Few mods and you can easily beat a stock 2015 S8.
Very long. Sold our last one with 186,000 miles and it was running beautifully. Never had any big issues. Wasn’t babied or anything either, we had fun with it.
these engine have carbon issues because its a direct injected engine, there for the fuel is sprayed into the cylinder not threw the intake port as in the majority of older cars, get your information correct before you post a video about a major purchase
To my knowledge it’s FAR less common than on the early 4.2 V8s. The last time I was researching that topic it was difficult to even find many documented cases of them failing.

Entirely incorrect. Compared to quite a few other Audi’s the V10 is far more reliable. Let alone 100,000 miles trouble free, I have personal experience with one that went from 115,000 to 178,000 (sold then, likely over 200k now with new owner), without a hiccup. Fluid changes and brakes, otherwise $0.00 invested. Basic maintenance and carbon buildup is the name of the game on these. It’s not a B5 S4 lol.
Heavy and huge amounts of drivetrain loss. Fun and special daily drivers but plenty of faster cars out there. Keep in mind a lot of them rolling around are probably down huge amounts of power because few people maintain them properly lol (carbon buildup).
The maintenance of the car makes a huge difference. Most owners picking them up these days don't maintain them properly. carbon buildup and other issues cause a big loss in power. Follow the instructions on the can. It's very easy. I've done it on both of my vehicles. It definitely works but you'll swear you have destroyed your engine after you do it. SUPER SMOKEY AND RUNS TERRIBLY FOR A FEW MINUTES! The easiest way to wedge your gas pedal (read instructions on can) is to put your seat all the way back, cut a stick long enough to reach the pedal, then scoot your seat forward to wedge the stick. Even easier with power seats. A quick blip of the seat switch makes it easy to give it just a little more gas. I would like to mention for everyone who is watching:
I own a 2009 Audi S6, bought it from my roommate for $10k who bought it from a projects guy in Oceanside, CA, where it spent most of its life. I've owned it for almost a year now, and just ticked it over to the 100,000 mi mark. I've ran into all of the issues the guy mentions here- I have replaced all coils/plugs, replaced the intake manifold with the JHM Motorsport option, which I highly recommend (it has Audi's 2nd version, metal flaps instead of plastic ones, helping the issue.) I've also replaced the high-pressure fuel pumps. This was all done by a shop- I have done the oil myself 4 times by now, and also replaced the alternator belt (called the accessory belt) also by myself, without taking the radiator frame completely off. Altogether roughly $4-5k in overall preventative maintenance. The misfiring and unhealthy power characteristics is exactly what symptoms will surface from these issues, I can confirm from my ownership experience. The only thing he didn't mention that I feel like is important to know about the S6's maintenance which I will have to get done on mine: is the upper oil pan. Most oil leaks from this car are not a huge concern and are likely not an extremely expensive fix, but the upper oil pan from what I've been told requires an engine-out service.
Other things I will need to have done: Windshield washer pump is not working, the left headlight intermittently doesn't work ("Dipped left headlight"), excessive camber wear (very likely upper control arms), and front pads/rotors. I will also probably want to look at the timing chains if I have that engine-out service done. Other than that, it is running and working perfectly. I daily drove it for 3 weeks when my friend borrowed my Acura, and have put nearly 10k miles on it since I owned it. I put 91-octane in it every single time, and I do max it on occasion. And YES, I do plan to put a louder exhaust on mine.
If you do buy one of these cars, also buy some sort of OBD scanning tool that reads VW/Audi's VAGCOM protocol. I recommend OBDEleven, I bought a pro-version reader from ebay for $50. It is a NECESSITY. When test-driving it, try the three different trans modes. I use D for cruising, S for fun, and I rarely use the manual mode... pretty much just to hear the engine on a downshift if I want. If you're seeking a quick manual shift paddle-shift car, you will likely not want this car.
If you're afraid of the maintenance: I bought $21 rear brake pads from O' Reilly's and replaced them myself in 2 hours. I replaced the alternator belt(a $17 part) in about 5 hours, a long time but I was constantly googling and being careful with taking stuff apart. I'm sure that's how long book time is, which would have been $600 in labor if I took it to a shop. The oil can be done in just under an hour once you know how to do it. YES, there are more expensive repairs you will want a shop to do, such as the intake manifold and any engine out service. But if you are a sharp car owner, and you have a VAGCOM reader, you'd be surprised how much money you can save. He mentions the E60 M5, a car I also adore... the Inline-5 and V10 engine note I've always loved and the functionality/sportiness of a sedan. I would love to drive an E60 M5 someday, no doubt... but of the two, the S6 is the car I would OWN.
I'll throw out there that one other common issue is leaking cam phaser seals. Very quick and easy to DIY. Check those first if you are dripping oil. It drips back and can make it look like a leaking oil pan gasket. It's hard to see without being under it on a lift, but the cam seals can be seen under the hood, or at least felt by hand if you reach back there.

Have had an 08 S6 for two years. In that time, I’ve replaced: the intake manifold, oxygen sensors(twice), replaced the Air injection pump, and did a carbon cleanup. I love this car, it’s been a bit expensive, but worth it IMO.

It's a twin turbo.... makes the same HP stock as the V10 but allows for tuning and turbo upgrades that allow insane power gains. You CANT do anything to make the V10 faster. A twin turbo V6 on the other hand, just a stage 2 tune will gain 130hp+ and turbo upgrades with stage 3 file will produce 800+ hp.

@@imob9657 you absolutely can do things to make the V10 faster- my auto mechanic said he was able to figure out how to unlock hidden RS6 features in the car's ECU, such as fuel enrichment, which by itself will beef a few dozen more HP in the high rev ranges. Computer mods alone I'm sure can harness hundreds of HP just by itself, and I'm not exaggerating. The main reason it's not done is because of how ridiculous the engine packaging is... a lot of serious mods or even minor ones would require several hours of labor and extensive computer knowledge to tear the car apart, and make sure the car's computer doesn't freak out. Not just with newer cars but the reason car modders adore smaller engines is because of the turbos, ECU mods are typically less annoying and there's less at stake when things go wrong (10 coil packs versus 6). There's also a lot more part sharing with cars in that range, the S6's gearbox is only shared with other executive sedans and I dont think a beefier gearbox or manual swap has been tried. The 4F platform S6 is a tough car to work on. But given enough money and expertise- someone could absolutely get a lot more HP out of the motor. But I honestly will want to leave it mostly as is- because the way Audi set it up is to make sure it lasts and doesn't grenade itself. Its plenty fast and a thrill to drive as it is, it just needs to be LOUDER...!
@@Medessec he is lying to you. Very few mechanics know how to code ECU and write tunes. You don't just find hidden stuff in the ECU you have to unlock it and rewrite the software.
Nicely done and covers most of the bases. The one potential mind melter that you failed to mention are the timing chain tensioners. While the V10 hasn't suffered as badly as the 04-06 4.2 V8s they do still suffer failures sometimes. The repair cost to that is nothing short of staggering.... hmmm... do I want to fix the timing on my V10 Audi S6 or buy a small island in the tropics? ;-) Steering column control module failures were also an issue on the C6 A6/S6 line.
Only other comment (which has been covered by others) is that the driving style doesn't impact your carbon build up. It's the fact that the injectors don't wash over the valves to keep them clean. A catch can might help prolong the service intervals although a nicely functioning stock PCV system doesn't do a terrible job. The water / meth injection into the air intake path sounds plausible to me if starting on a freshly de-carboned engine. I'd be hesitant on a high mileage car as I don't want any of the carbon deposits going through the system and potentially causing other issues.

Good video, only misleading comments are about driving the car hard, this will not reduce carbon buildup. I've got 125K on my 2008, I bought it with 40K eight years ago. These cars are a blast to drive and make great sounds. JHM is the shop that has paid some attention to this platform, have some good mods available.
a 35-50 dollar oil catch can kit is all you need to fix carbon build up. i have a passat with an fsi engine, and ive never had to worry about the carbon build up problem on the intake valves, as long as i had the catch can installed

I just happened upon this video as I was looking for information on issues that these cars have. I know the 4.2l V8 cars have their tensioner, chain, chain-guide issues so I figured this car wouldn't be any different. My father wants a cool, non-flashy car with some power to drive daily and the S6 fits his needs and wants. The newer ones are either trashed or they're still super expensive. I think your video convinced me to find him a clean C6 S6. Thank you for the time and effort you put into this video for us looking for these niche cars.

Most everything he says is correct. Bought car on the cheap at 75k four years ago and first thing I did was miltek exhaust. At 85k had to replace bushings, control arms, rotors. At 95k really got into the engine. Had to replace some vacuum lines, water pump, had “fluid migration” = coolant was leaking onto wiring harness and traveling ECwU turned out ok which was the main thing, replaced some o rings near the valley, did a carbon clean, and swapped for some aftermarket lambo headers. Rough start and idle went smooth as a cucumber and felt like a completely new car. To this dudes point nothing to major but even the smallest of things can cost a shit ton.
Note: my S6 is not my daily just the date night and country road fun car.

When you mess with a C6 S6 or A6, you will be in for headaches due to the electrical problems this car always seems to have. Your dash will light up with warnings out of the blue. Tail light warnings, when they work, Emergency Brake warning, yet it works perfectly fine.

Thanks, very informative! I just bought a 2008 S8, and had some initial concerns about reliability. Mine is very low mileage (@ 40K miles), so I'm not sure how much it actually got driven. I have a short commute, so it doesn't allow me much time to rev, so I think I need to take it out for longer drives now and then to give it some rev's. Useful threads to include as well! @@jy5960 Actually, I found an issue with it that I couldn't diagnose and the seller had no ability to rectify either. It had a weird miss happening when I rev'd it out over 5300 rpm--it would actually stutter and miss, then would be fine higher in the rev range. It happened fairly often, and I didn't have the funds or the patience to pursue the cause. If it hadn't been for that, I would definitely have kept it, because the car is amazing. I have not read of this issue anywhere on the forums, so it appears to have been unique to this car. I'm still driving my old D2 S8, just passed 300K km and still running strong. Good luck with your car, and make sure to test it out through the whole rev range just to be sure.
My 2010 Toyota Sequoia had an intake manifold issue similar to this which required the entire thing to be replaced. Like this It didn't "kill" the car, but essentially it drove in limp mode and couldn't get above 40 mph. Getting it fixed was about $2800. Now, Toyota being Toyota, issued a TSB and warranty extension on it and would replace it for free on any vehicle under 10 years old and under 150k miles. Good luck getting Audi to offer up something like that on a known problem issue.
I have an obsession with v10s and idk why. I'm still debating on buying my dream car a 2010 m6 with the last year of the v10 but damn the maintenance is killer.

Some good info here but also some nonsense. The whole chat about winding the engine out do that the larger amount of fuel can clean the intake valves? These engines aren't port injection... The fuel isn't introduced before the back of the intake valve, they are direct injection, the fuel nozzle is inside the cylinder. This is exactly why carbon build up happens to begin with. No matter how hard you drive it the fuel isn't going to magically find its way out of the combustion chamber to clean the back of the intake valves.

Another thing to watch for is the transmission, the 400 lb•ft torque absolutely kills the old 6-speed step-tronic transmission if you launch it too much, other than that this car is pretty much bulletproof. I’m looking to sell mine in 5-6 months because I want to move up to a S7.

Got myself one of these for a pretty good price. It has a new OEM intake manifold, and timing chains. Just need to fix the darn oil+coolant leaks and it should last me a good while. Only got 73k miles on the whole car.

So this is much more reliable than the M5? I love the sound and performance of the V10 but I the constant horror stories and credit card suicide trying to keep them running scares the ish out of me 😟
Significantly more reliable than an E60 M5, yes. I wouldn’t even consider an E60 unless I had $4000-6500 worth of repair/preventative maintenance funds. Whereas a well maintained S6 is typically free of such eye wateringly expensive maintenance items.

Nice video but remember its a v10 so it will drink alot of fuel. Its not a economy car so be prepared to pay for fuel abit more often than you would on a regular car.
Actually seafoam works if done properly , drop 1/4 in the oil crank , half or full bottle in fuel tank and the run a bottle in the vacuum lines .
I had 2013 s4 always this kind of maintenance since I bought it , till the end is when I sold it at 95k miles .. I did this routine every 10k miles and always added half a bottle in the fuel tank every oil change . ( I did this on all three of my vehicles ) a mini cooper which is know for high carbon clean up , my s4 and my Honda s2000 . This routine added to your normal interval maintenance will help alot in the long run . It will actually save you alot more going to the shop and doing a walnut blaster ( although a walnut blaster is a very well know solution ) doing this specific routine will help prevent the build up . To also add my s4 was high modified and we all know highly modified vehicles will have the most carbon build up. Never looked back at adding seafoam to all my vehicles .

Nice video, however your theory of carbon build up is incorrect. Instead of the strength of the fuel spray causing/removing carbon build up, it is actually temperatures that either allow for or reduce oxidation of the carbon. I'd recommend watching engineering explained latest video about carbon build up. Otherwise, great video!

I'm very close to buying the 08 or 09 S8. Did the engine get better in that last model yr? I know the 07 was the first yr for the V10 and normally the kinks have to be worked out.

I had a retainer pin drop from the intake and get caught on the back of one of the valves, and another catch a bunch of plastic on the back of another valve. I'd say I got lucky, flap delete is a must on these cars

Others may steer you away from an S6 in general but I think that’s a steal. Budget some money for future maintenance with an independent shop that knows them well, and enjoy. I’d go for it.

They are an older set of Breytons, unsure of the specific model but they are 19s with 265 section tires square stance.
The Mercedes M272 (V6 350) and M273 (V8 550) have this same intake manifold issue, there are replacement billet flaps you can buy for bout $160 rather than buying a a brand new intake manifold (anywhere between $500-$750) is there no metal option to replace the plastic flaps with on these Audi's?
I haven’t been able to find anyone that has done so, nor replacement flaps you can purchase for the S6. If that was an option I doubt anyone would be buying the JHM manifolds or OEM replacements. Just another example of there being a minimal amount of aftermarket support for them.

I don’t care what you say or what anyone else says the Tiptronic Transmissions on these cars are absolute garbage and when they break you’re looking at 5 to 6K minimum to get it done if you want to get it done 100% correctly from a shop certified to work on Audis you’re looking at $7000 minimum
By "when" you must mean "if"? Ran one up to like 185,000 miles without a hiccup, sold it operating flawlessly. Haven't heard of many cases whatsoever about transmission failures. Seems to have even less issues than the later DSGs lol.

Luckily Audi picked it up for her and fixed it under warranty. I didn’t have that luxury. I didn’t even get my transmission fixed tbh. Once I called around an got some quotes I was floored. All I needed was simple little sensor replaced, that was it, and for it to cost that much just seemed like a massive scam. So I sold it for close to what I paid for it. Great car for the first 3 months.

That sounds like a fair/average price as long as it’s in good shape. Nice that’s it’s only had two owners as well. I’d avoid any S6/8 that’s been passed around too many times lol. I’d also have a PPI done at an Audi shop that knows the V10 well and if it checks out, go for it.

The carbon build up section is incorrect and completely misleading.
infact driving these cars hard could actually cause MORE carbon build up.
The carbon buildup is from the pcv and egr system contaminants on the back side of the valve because there is no fuel to wash them away
as fuel is squirted directly into the combustion chamber.
Driving hard creates more crankcase ventilation therefore more blowby into the intake manifold.
The Audi pcv system isn't too bad but they need to be run warm.
This is the same for most direct injection engines.
Short regular trips is the absolute killer.
Bought a 3.2 FSI Cabriolet. Didnt know the intake was broken when I bought it. Am still on the hunt for a second hand one. If your buying one of these make SURE the unit has been replaced and save yourself the hassle!!!

@@michaelgomez5392 Do not be scared, just don't trust every mechanic with your money, use youtube for diagnose before spending money on repair. I drive only Audis all my life, and this one is the best buy ever. I didn't even know what i bought until I started living with it, never even seen V10 before. In 3 years repaired - 1 injector, 1 spark plug, cabine ventilator, 1 xsenon balast and cleaned carbon inside the engine. It does not brake, just drive it normal ( it's not a race car ) and it will go 1M miles 100%. Many people say that those models of Audi S6 and S8 are the last good cars that audi made. My wife has an Audi A4 2.0tdi 2016- with that shit every month something is wrong, and the driving is terrible. oh, and: don't buy with bang&olufsen and ceramics brake and you will be ok, those are brutally expensive. Every service you need 11,5L of oil, oil filter and 2 bigass air filters and you are good to go for 30k km :)))

You have no idea about FSI engines. There is NO fuel being sprayed on the top of the valves. Hence DIRECT INJECTION. Please learn the basics before posing as a subject matter expert.

So we got a S6 but not the RS6 in America I wonder if our neighbors to the North got the RS6?
I had a 2007 S6 , Loved it, loved the sound , but the transmission was always its downfall. Sluggish at times denying down shifts, but sometimes it was ok. Very slow gear changes in manual mode. After I sold it I purchased a 2011 Audi A8L 4.2L and absolutely love it. Yes it has less HP, but I swear it feels faster with its zf8 speed trans and of course superior ride quality as the S6 was very over sprung in stock form. Next car in my sites is a 2015 A8L 4.0T soon. The 4.0T is a absolute beast and very underrated in HP by Audi. Few mods and you can easily beat a stock 2015 S8.
How long can these engines last
Very long. Sold our last one with 186,000 miles and it was running beautifully. Never had any big issues. Wasn’t babied or anything either, we had fun with it.

these engine have carbon issues because its a direct injected engine, there for the fuel is sprayed into the cylinder not threw the intake port as in the majority of older cars, get your information correct before you post a video about a major purchase

To my knowledge it’s FAR less common than on the early 4.2 V8s. The last time I was researching that topic it was difficult to even find many documented cases of them failing.
Not reliable. 😂 it’s a Audi, and more importantly, it won’t make it to 100,000 problem free. Basically, if you have a lot of cash to put into these things, then it isn’t a problem 💯
Entirely incorrect. Compared to quite a few other Audi’s the V10 is far more reliable. Let alone 100,000 miles trouble free, I have personal experience with one that went from 115,000 to 178,000 (sold then, likely over 200k now with new owner), without a hiccup. Fluid changes and brakes, otherwise $0.00 invested. Basic maintenance and carbon buildup is the name of the game on these. It’s not a B5 S4 lol.
What about the timing chain how long does those last
Looking at an 08 S6 V10 and a 08 cl600 TT V12, which is the better buy for reliability and daily driving?
Oh god don’t get the 600 😂 If the S6 has somewhat steep maintenance the TTV12 will have you selling kidneys. S6 is far easier to maintain.
The intake dont brake , it gets stuck not a expensive fix .

Sounds like carbon buildup causing misfires. Probably needs carbon cleaned and the injectors checked.

i finally bought mine today
My auto G35 pulled on one until 100mph everytime from a 60 roll. They aren’t as quick as I thought they would be.
Heavy and huge amounts of drivetrain loss. Fun and special daily drivers but plenty of faster cars out there. Keep in mind a lot of them rolling around are probably down huge amounts of power because few people maintain them properly lol (carbon buildup).
The maintenance of the car makes a huge difference. Most owners picking them up these days don't maintain them properly. carbon buildup and other issues cause a big loss in power. Also if they have it tuned, exhaust, gutted cats, etc, it makes a huge difference in performance.

Sold our last one with around 180,000 miles, had no issues during our ownership at all. Surprisingly reliable cars.
I owned one and it cost $23,000 in one year in maintenance, I got an aftermarket warranty and sold the car after 12 months, It was ridiculously expensive to fix
That sounds like a lot, but I'm assuming almost everything was replaced or the engine was dropped a couple times.

Every repair is a grand. I can see why they are so cheap.
They have a 20% intake manifold failure rate and that's about it. This engine is bulletproof, carbon build up is not only related to this engine.
meanwhile, ls3 ctsv has none of these problems
A small block Chevy is more reliable than a European V10? Color me shocked. (Just messing with you; CTS-V is a great alternative to a lot of these big German sedans)
