My father used wood ash in the 80’s in liquid form and watered the vegetable garden with it. He also poured his cold jasmine tea into house plants. I got my father’s green thumb and have camp fires just so I can have ash.
I find composting grass clippings & fall leaves with wood ash really helps to break them down.
Like you did without and with wood ash and seems faster?
@@xaviercruz4763 Yup. The pile decreases in size faster which allows me to put even more on the pile. It's a good way to start decomp but don't mix ash into an active pile, it may react against the microbes and earthworms every bit as much as it does the plant fiber.
Trivial Info: Wood ash contains a form of lye very similar to the active ingredient in cleaning products used to unclog toilets & drain pipes.
We have a wood stove for the winters here. Good hard wood.
I use woodash instead of salt on our driveway and sidewalk after we've had any snowfall.
I also spread it at about that ratio around my plants and grass in the front yard and the gardens in the back.
Blueberries are in raised beds at the higher end of our sloped yard and off in the corner on their own to keep them separate from everybody else.
I love ALL MIgardener videos!
Luke, thank you. Have a fabulous weekend!😊🎉
I use hardwood white ash as a dusting against insects, particularly good for flea beetles. So, yeah I get a two for one, extra nutrients and insect control.
Really? Thank you! Flea beatles are a real problem for me. Diatomaceous earth (dt) gets expensive.
I had flea beetles for the first time last year- good to know!
Timing can be quite good..i was doing some.. digging for information on this yesterday! Lemow thank you!
i don't use wood ash but I'm grateful for this knowledge, thank you.
Yes, please. Thank you.
Thanks Luke. I have been dumping ashes from the wood stove in my garden area for some time. Maybe I should stop. But for now I am looking for a redhead with anchor tattoo.
I used to throw the wood ash from our wood stove on my larger garden in the winter but guess that wasn't the best. I now use our pine needles for organic material that seems ok. I never used wood ash on my blueberries so I'm glad after hearing this as it was hard enough getting the Ph down low enough.
I literally have that exact same fire pit. My favorite thing about it; it has a bunch of stars of David. Looks pretty cool
I've used wood ash for most of my life, great stuff if used with a little wisdom and insights. Thanks Luke for this video!
Luke, thanks for all the great info! You always bring it 150%!❤ Also do I need it if I’m starting a new Greenstalk?
Keep an eye out after big storms. Blown over tree branches everywhere! Free wood ash!
Good information , thanks :)
Used some yesterday
I used the ash from my fire on the peach trees this year. It looks like I'll have a good crop this year!
Our first garden was started on a spot where someone had dumped many buckets of wood ash from their wood stove (we didnt initially know that).
Needless to say, don't do that. We spent a huge amount of time and resources trying to ammend the soil, it never did work well. Finally, I just moved the garden to a different location.
My husband learned that lesson the hard way before we met. He dumped a pile of grill ash in a corner of his yard, and it killed everything. The following year somehow some poison ivy decided to take up residence in that spot. 😮
Hes always concerned when I use our wood stove ash in our yard. "Remember, not too much, now"
Thanks!
If I can make compost in my garden in a couple of months, it doesn’t make sense that it would take a million years to make wood ash.
I use it on the lilac and raspberries.
I do put a bit of fireplace ash into my compost bins, maybe 2 very thin layers per cubic meter bin per year. So far that hasn't had a negative effect on my blueberries, tomatoes, or potatoes. But this video made it clear that I need to test my soil PH...thanks. 💚
Love watching videos I just ordered a bunch of seeds from you lol I'm so excited to have a garden again after over 10 years of not growing a thing
I JUST MADE MY FIRST PURCHASE FROM A VIDEO FROM UA-cam! And the first time I’ve bought seeds that weren’t from a big box store (which I had 0 success germinating out of hundreds) or from Amazon (trying to germinate pole brand with still 0 success). I got some broccoli and purple cauliflower and hope it’s not to late to grow. Dangit! I should’ve gotten some pole beans in case this second pack I got doesn’t germinate (on day 3). Anyway! Excited!
A list of wood ash loving plants would be nice☺ We burn tree trimmings, weeds, large garden refuge, grass would that be good amendment ash?
I'd say everything is good but the weeds.
Ashtastic~
I use actual charcole from burning logs. I keep the pieces that look easy to break and i put it in like perlight i think the channels are a perfect home for microbes and springtails and the like.
I put it around my lilacs and lavender and a little in my compost pile. I have used it to spread around the base of some plants such as hosta and lettuce along with eggshells and pine needles to deter pests. I’m not sure if thats 100% effective or if it just makes me feel better trying to utilize my free resources.
True !
I knew that wood ash was a good fertilizer but i havent taken the time to do the reserch on what makes it good. Thankfully this was posted in time before i just added a bunch of it to my garden beds "just beacuse" lol. I have alot of fires since theres aleays sticks and tree limbs to cut down and burn around where I live.
Ive been scooping the ashes from my pit directly into my compost so ill definitely have to test the PH before I use it.
Ill be growing alot of tomatoes and brassicas this year so hopfully my ingnoance will be forgiven and will correct itself before its too late.
Is it possible to amend just a small portion of my small garden without affecting my acidic loving plants planted in the same bed just a couple feet away?
I was planning on using woodash for my root crops this year. I always get horrible germination and little to no growth with beets, carrots, radishes.... good idea or no?
I dump ash from both my charcoal grill and pellet grill to this patch of ground I used for planting flowers and it seems to work well. I don't use charcoals that has accelerant mixed into them though, most folks who grill a fair bit know not to use those because they leave a bad smell on your food.
I find that 1 quart of dry wood ash that hasn't been wet for a 3x3 area works well. I use it in my 3,000 sqft garden on all my plants and never had an issue. Remember plants adjust the ph to there liking , that's what the rhizosphere is for
On calm wind days I take my tree fall sticks and burn such. 24 hours later I scatter the dust if the wind remains calm. The dust is applied to the full garden compost pile that overwinters as deep mulch.
This is so Solar-Punk! Wisdom of the ancestors for the health of the future. Lets GROW!!!!
How about old ash piles? I have access to piles that are 5 years old. Would they be worth spreading?
When we had a wood stove I used the ash in my garden all the time.
(1) Ash is too a fantastic insulator. While seeming to be cool it might contain hot embers--for days after combustion took place. Best practice is to place it and some liquid in a bucket, together, well-mixed, to create a slurry. (2) Someone will correct me with better numbers, but, if ash is ~ 0-1-3 +calcium, and urine might be ~ 18-2-5, they're a complimentary pairing. Municipal codes might prohibit either or both from being used; this is not an encouragement to violate. (3) Over time, everything seems to tend towards neutral. That is, both a compost pile and the soil itself have some capability to buffer the initial alkaline spike at application. If you're worried about pH, plan ahead. (4) If you don't know, with certainty, that only solid wood was burned--not treated, not painted, not plywood, etc.--avoid the ash. It's just not worth it...
Good one. Best. Paul.
I have a pellet stove in my greenhouse would the ash from that work just the same?
Hi Luke! Can i use the stuff that falls from a chimney cleaning? Chimney sweep asked if i want to keep it for the garden but don't know if i should.
Wouldn’t that have creosote in it?
@@emkn1479Absolutely & fine for the garden.
Never been first to watch until now!
Would it be advisable or not to just throw wood ash into our compost as opposed to a straight application?
Good Question!
I sprinkle a layer into mine as I build the pile up.
Thank you for this. Most of the videos I have watched have told people to add wood ash to the garden with no cautions. My soil is highly alkaline and no way will I add wood ash to it. I have to add the nutrients to the soil.
I burn all they time. We have a lot of trees around & plenty of leaves. But we also add in any cardboard or paper products. All of the wood ash from my fire pit goes onto my compost pile & it’s turned constantly by the chickens.
What about using black walnut ash
I'm pretty confused, here in Idaho we grow beautiful potatoes because our soil is so alkaline. We can NOT grow blueberries. I think you might be wrong about the soil on those two plants needing the same thing.
Luke,
Just curious--which is more nutrient rich, wood ash or volcanic ash? 🤔
do you mean Volcanic Soot or ash created by lava when it burns things?
QUESTION. Is it good in a compost bin?
It is not. In a cubic yard of compost, you shouldn't use more than a tuna can's volume of ash.
is that the same as bio char?
Thanks I might of just messed up I sprinkled it the yard where I’m planting flowers
Call a local greenhouse and ask them .
I've sprinkled it in my garden for the past few years during the winter, then mix into the soil prior to planting in the springtime. My garden produces very well.
I'm careful about only wood & non shiney paper/cardboard going into the woodstove.
I suspect that you have only benefited your soil!
Thanks
Can you mix it with sulfur to neutralize alkalinity?
I have a wood stove and use ash on my garden. But too much is Not good! And if using old wood boards and such then the ash goes in the dumpster.
@migardener, what about biochar? Does it have the same alkalinity as ash?
Not really, but biochar will absorb many nutrients from the soil if added before being pre-charged.
@@harshalshah4685 oh, you mean like in a bad way? Natural Amendments are not my strong suit.
Do you think wood ash in compost layering is okay??? This year I’ve had issues with animals in my compost so I was hoping to use ash to cover the scraps from my house compost materials
If you cover your scraps with a layer of soil ir compost it helps deter their little sniffers from finding it.. I have 2- 3 walled piles and haven't had any issues. I also sprinkle wood ash into the layers of compost.
@@5points7019 thank you!!!
I wonder if the ash from the pellet stove is ok?
@MIgardener, this is a nice video as a how to turn soils more alkaline, have you done a video on how to increase acidity in the soil naturally? if not, i foresee that being the next video? Lol
Or is it as simple as using sulfur?
Several years ago I read that ash was acidic, but you’re saying it isn’t. Our soil would benefit from it if you’re right, as our soil is generally acidic. We have 2 fireplace inserts and live in the middle of the woods, so wood is more plentiful than we can burn. I keep learning something new with every video of yours I watch.
All plants have a rhizosphere that adjusts the ph according to there liking. If your growing organic and not using petroleum based fertilizers adding 1 quart of wood ash for every 3x3 area would be fine. You would have to add boatloads of wood ash for it to cause issues. Nature doesn't adjust the soil ph , it's all about checks and balances so to speak
@@italianwiseguy4658 thank you for the ratio info! I never know how much is too much sometimes. I try to do as much organically these days as I can.
I usually just add the wood ash to my compost and mix it in.
Luke is perfect
I was thinking about dusting our lawn with wood ash. Thoughts anyone?
💚💚💚
would use wood ash as a pest dust on cabbage
No. It will burn the leaves. Just around the base of the plant.
How does azomite compare to wood ash?
Azomite is not alkaline. So you can't really overdo it.
We burn cardboard… I’m guessing that isn’t helpful?! Our burn barrel is full of it and I’ve been curious.
It is my understanding that simple cardboard is ok. If there is plastic tape or colored paper, I wouldn't use it.
Radish like wood ash?
Creation stance here.
👍🏼
I put ash around my bananas every year and they stay healthy, grow lots of pups and produce bananas that are incredible.
How thick do you spread the ash?
What about ash from a charcoal grill?
Luke mentioned that. Only use if just straight charcoal with no lighter fluid.
You can take distilled white vinegar and water solution, stir into the wood ash to alter the high pH down.
Just do it outside and AWAY from your doors and windows. Mixing the solution and ash creates ammonia gas. STRONG odor too.
After you get the pH where you want it, let it dry and crunch it up for easier application.
3:45 it would look amazing if u stained the wooden fence black.
😂😂😂 Great video.
My wood ash goes into my compost.
DISCLAIMER: Do NOT burn your trash.
Could I use my pellet stove ash??
What is the "glue" that holds the pellets together?
Don’t forget the liquid gold.
I throw ash and char in my compost.
What about cardboard?
Lol, I knew a redheaded woman with an anchor on her shoulder 😅😅😅
what are those 3 white tubes behind you in the video.
Looks like 3 sections of house gutters or PVC pipe. Plants like strawberries do well in "gutter pots"
Make soap 🧼 using water of wood ash .. and aloe and lard 😂🎉
And then infuse with your Favourite herbs 🌿 and things like extracts
I have chocolate 🍫 mint
👣 😂🎉
Her Mother’s Day is coming ! 💋 😫🫶🏽😬😹
I never catch Luke's videos right when they post.
It’s ok. UA-cam will still let u see them. 😂
WELCOME!
Not saying to just shovel it on, but if worried about ph then why not just raise the ph: put a good pinch of sulphur in the ash bucket, take a whiz in it, water it down and mix. Can't you just drizzle that over garden?
oh there is the old tiny house that he was going to build
2 if you're lucky! LOL
Kind of reminds me of like nuclear energy. Tiny amounts with so much power
Redheads with anchor tattoos!
Really? That had me laughing for half an hour. 😂
Sugar as well, cellulose it a sugar we cant digest.
I make my own charcoal, i turn it to biochar for gardening.
I try things in my yard/ garden... if it works, Great, if not, something else goes in. Earth is earth, plants like it or not. I grow what I eat. God Help Me.
I think I put too many red headed women in my raised beds
make sure youre up wind...
That red headed anchor tattoo analogy was in very bad taste. How are they all going to go to the bathroom at the same time if you consolidate them into one room without proper accommodations???!
It's all so complicated to me
I have been exposed to a lot of Asbestos, & at 62, I am still alive. maybe the lead paint in my life was okay too... I never had a bicycle helmet, & my first job I drove a 10 speed to & from, to, no helmet. 5 years... kids are too pampered, & you know, all this human condition, all of it, is just getting started for what is really to come. I love you videos. Thank you, so very much :-)
And, nope. Not looking for Land Before Time propaganda.
I only date redheads with anchor tats.
.....I don't think Anchor Tatoos are as popular among red headed women as Luke thinks they are....
Someone commented the earth is only 6k years old and UA-cam deleted it? Why u suppose that is?! 😂😂
UA-cam: Tsk tsk! We can't have those bible believers spreading their beliefs!
Luke disagreed with the comment
@@JMJMeshel Luke wouldn’t delete a comment like that
@@5points7019 I personally believe the Bible was made by or hijacked by a certain tribe we’re not allowed to talk abt.
Because its a fricken garden video and those zealots should have educated themselves. YT actually did a very good thing. Poor Luke didn’t need this nonsense.
