I have similar interests as yours in terms of choosing the locations. I have been to such locations in my hatchback and now upgrading to Thar to go that extra mile. Less crowd and more of nature is what drives us insane.. Soul filling treats..

Bro if someone will Continuously drive the vehicle in lower gears ie first or 2nd its obvious that your vehicle gonna consume a lot of fuel coz these are the most powerful gears of vehicle hence they consume more
Even we as a audience not connected with this trip. Reason 1 is Its about place there is not much to see in UK as compared to Spiti and Leh not much adventure. I would suggest you to do Spiti, Zanskar, Kargil and Leh then go to last village Demchok in this vehicle.
This place is last village to Pindari glacier foot track. This guys are very hospitable. Give good food n comfortable stay, it was an excelent off roading.
You should also explore sikkim valleys 😀 .. amazing beaty
Deep grooves tyres and engaging 4x4, driving on muddy terrain using low gear and high rpm, does bring your mileage down drastically. I do understand your concern on ground clearance but other than that it is a more capable vehicle (in this price category) and so should not worry about fuel consumption. I mean you don't want to be like that stuck Bolero 😉
This is not the first time I engaged 4x4. There were situations where I kept the 4x4 on for 100s of kms in snow and the results were not that bad. This vehicle is very inefficient and this was ok if it was as capable.

I always carry 2 Jerry cans (40 litres) filled from Shell only. Mine is BS-4 and gives 10 km/litre in highways. Tapping the low end torque of Gurkha comes at a price. No chamatkari in that. May check whether the bolts fastening gearbox with propeller shaft has become loose or not. In my case mileage increased drastically after those bolts were tightened.
Regarding low GC the island Gurkha of Andaman has nicely hinted that it might have been done to lower SUV tax. The bash plate can be safely rewelded 2" above thus solving low GC problem. 75 profile tyre is a must (about 1" lift).

You may not know, I had no bash plate and my tires were 245/75R16 from starting which I changed later due to tire performance, it was still troublesome. The GC increase with a tire which is 1 inch bigger will be half an inch (as you get radius increase as extra gc not diameter). The control arms are just around 180mm which still doesn't reache 200mm after those tires. If you drive on soft grounds you are fine with anything, if you are on rocks mostly this will still be difficult. 10 on highways is very poor too and we should never quote highway mileage of such vehicles bcz there are better vehicles available if are just using these on highways. And lastly if it is really done to save vehicle tax, I highly doubt about the decision makers at force, they ruined this vehicle beyond imagination. I am just sharing my thoughts and findings with fellow viewers and people are just stuck with that 75 section tire and modifying bash plate, thats not the solution as I had that at first place before delivery.
@@acurioussoul9840 9.8 km/l (with AC on highway) to 11.6 km/l (without AC on highway). For me also it was a learning experience. I was alarmed when I noticed that highway mileage is dropping towards 8 km/l. Then one fine day my vehicle was stalled. It was found that 3 out of 4 bolts fastening propeller shaft with gear box have fallen out and there is no transmission of mechanical energy to rear wheels. Those bolts were probably loose for a long time as I was frequently experiencing loss of transmission issues. After rectifying the issue I, as well as the Force dealer, are also pleasantly surprised to see my mileage soaring to 11 and above (highway without AC). With full AC on also mileage never dropped below 9.5. Factory specified highway mileage is 10 km/l. Regarding offroading mileage, I never bothered to calculate. As it is known that Gurkha will guzzle diesel in order to provide the low end torque and full potential of 2.6 litre engine.
I am not a technical guy but taming this temperamental beast (Gurkha, BS-4) compelled me to learn some basics. Now I always ensure that those bolts and also the bolts below suspensions are properly tightened. Also for reliable, smooth engine performance I now stick to Shell only and avoid Indian Oil bunks.
Bottom line is mileage conscious persons don't deserve Gurkha.
P.S. Skilled support for Gurkha is a rarity. Not many know the appropriate wheel alignment settings of Gurkha, especially the caster & camber. Most just leave after adjusting the toe. Proper alignment also boosted mileage.
@@DCVExpeditions I appreciate you taking time to answer me. I cannot comment on BS-6 version but with my BS-4 I have not faced so much issues like you in my 4 years of handling. I have traversed Eastern Himalayas of Arunachal Pradesh - Tawang, Sangetsar Lake, Shergaon, Eagle Nest Sanctuary, Walong, Mechuka, Parshuram Kund, Namdapha; then Sandakphu in West Bengal; and also remote areas of Nagaland like Dzukhou, Ruzazho, Longkhum. Did not face much GC issue. May be rocks there are softer then in Western Himalayas. Only issue I faced is bad quality diesel in the hills (kerosene mixed). That is why I always carry 40 litres fuel. Misfiring issue has been resolved after I switched to Shell Oil (but not readily available in North East). Gurkha performed extremely well in handling slush (almost half wheel sunk in red viscous mud) in the Garbhanga Forest trail of Assam even with factory default H/T tyres.
I knew the package (pros & cons) before purchasing. I was told that factory default mileage is 10 km/l and calculations will fail once I engage 4x4 or constantly engage low gears (as is the case in hills/mountains). I accepted the package to fulfill my passion.
Bottom-line: this beast is not for the typical mileage conscious "kitna deti hai" mindset bearing people. No offence but I am also sharing my thoughts & feelings in this open forum. Jai hind...

1300 rupees worth of Adblu run for 12000 kms. So its around 10 paisa per km. Difference in running cost is 8 rupee per km vs 13 rupee per km. So a single trip of 2000 kms will give you difference of 10000 rupees in fuel costs. And if we want to finish that Adblu and will drive 12000 kms in trips, it will be 60000 rupees worth of extra fuel.

Quite surprised with such low fuel economy, as force engines are generally quite efficient, fortuner and endeavour 3.2 to easily give 9-10 in off-road expedition and 12-13 easily while crusing @100 on highway.

There are many factors for this vehicle to be guzzling fuel like anything, higher CC, curb weight is more than that of Thar about 200kgs I guess, just a little less aerodynamic due to its big size + roof rack, AM Tyres + on snow you'd brake more in mud you'd accelerate more it's glide stop (I'm not talking about black ice situation there one would act similar to mud stuck) vs stuck struggle environment, if stuck on vehicle and tyres mud will be heavier than ice and we get to know about their amount when after the trip we get these vehicles washed IMO good part is this vehicle will do better on higher altitudes due to higher CC as more oxygen and fuel can burn providing optimum power and its weight is good in a sense that the sheet is thicker, height is better for daily use as you'd not feel crammed. I like both Thar and Gurkha they have different styles overall.
gurkha actually needs an engine change .. a 2 litre turbo diesel engine is the best for such vehicles which should generate 140 bhp and 300-350nm torque

Bhai at this point sachme exchange karna consider karlo , gurkha doesnt serve the purpose it should optimally, not a serious offroader with low hanging control arms at 180-170mm, little to no fuel efficiency and less articulation and overall lack of refinement for me kills this, i dont speak this as a thar owner but as an offroading enthusiast myself. I mean even a v6 mercedes g350d would give a better mileage than 56litres of fuel in 70-80 kms
Maybe the 1 key start thing in minus temprature got it sold for you as you had troubles with bulldozer in snow but i think something much better is out there for you like v cross, hilux or something else. With 4 doors and still is practical offroad

Force motors needs to employ more quality control engineers . They should learn from Mahindra , Mahindra almost overnight took over the full Volvo quality control team. That is the reason that the product quality has improved by leaps and bounds. It is time that force motors did something instead of just fooling the ardent fans of Gurkha, you simply cannot sell a vehicle because it's engine is reliable, a vehicle on a whole has to deliver. Sad show force motors.
But you also seem to forget the revenue for r&d at mahindras disposal apart from cars mahindra is the biggest tractor seller in the world, force barely makes sales and is cash starved for r&d and hiring experts obviously comes at big costs. Its just making do with what it has at this point

I think the major reasons to end this trip includes sad performance and capabiliities of Gurkha in this terrain. The Fuel consumption is really shocking. But, the place is really beautiful and not a tourist place according to me.
