    I made a spindle with 3 dollar tree “dowels”, a jar lid, a marker lid, and a random plastic hook I found on my kitchen table.!

    I'm making one now, and because you mentioned the shiny side of the CD is bright I spray painted the shiny CD side black, and this really cool effect happened where you see a thin line of rainbow light! Soooo cool! Wanted to share so others can do it too.

    Thank you for your video, I've been spinning since I was 21yrs old, I'm no 60yrs old. I like to spin most fibre, although I do like corridale wool, but Johnson and johnsons cotton wool is also nice to spin, you can by it on line. You said camel wool is really scratchy, it shouldn't be, I've spun camel wool and it's been delightfully soft and light but just like with alpaca etc, you really need to mix it with wool because it has no spring to it. I've also spun microfiber, I got some waste from a weaving factory, this waste usually becomes toy filling, and it spun beautifully. Your videos are enjoyable to watch thank you. Cheers from Tasmania!

    The Salish Indians of British Columbia actually had a breed of dog they raised specifically for their fur. They'd sheer them like sheep and weave the fur into clothing or rugs and tapestries to line their longhouses. They'd even mix the fur with plant fibers of various types for further structure. The dog went extinct when sheep were introduced to the region because sheep were easier to raise.

      We only learned about this recently! They really were fascinating dogs. Thanks so much for sharing!

    I vaguely knew how to make/use a drop spindle but wasn't sure exactly and this video was extremely helpful for filling in the gaps. I've got a ton of superfine yarn from unraveling ugly old sweaters and 6 bags of roving my sister got me because she saw those awful blankets that would rather die than make lol. Now I can finally get around to spinning and plying it all into something useful and my husband can't complain about me buying more yarn. All around win!

    This is so cool! I've never seen spinning before, but I've always wondered how it was done. I have this fantasy that one day I'm going to wake up in the 1800s and will have to figure out how to do everything I've always taken for granted. :) It's nice to add a basic knowledge of spinning to my mental repertoire! Lol. :)

    Thank you for an informative video. I’m a guy who like’s actually doing history. Ta drop spindle is a very old technology to turn fibers into twisted cord to knit with and weave with. Again thank you.

    I was new to spinning and yes I was given so much fleece and alpaca ... so I have been skirting sorting washing dying carding spinning...and a bit of felting too. So, I have a wheel but lately I thought a drop spindle would be so portable to take out with me and spin so thank you for the awesome 'how to' with making the drop spindle.. Easy.. Cheers! PS.. I laughed about the beginners Art Yarn.. I tried to go back and do yarn like that and yes it was so hard to replicate.

    Thank you for mentioning what type of wool to use, I’ve watched so many videos that just tell how to spin and I’ve been using angora, I didn’t even realize that angora is really difficult for beginners hahaha

    From the tool to spinning, you make that look easy but I know it is also a challenge. We take so much for granted having everything made for us.

      Thanks for your comment Linda! And Faith insists it's actually easier than she made it look. Apparently slow-mo spinning is trickier than just letting it spin!

    It's a good idea to use a jeweller's drill to pre-drill a hole in the top of the dowel for the cup hook; otherwise the dowel is much more likely to split. Also, I follow Abbey Franquemont's advice (queen of spindling!) and spin my own leader to get started.

    So I made my own spindle years ago but mostly spin cotton from medicine bottles. I suck though and I've heard cotton is hard to spin. Really I just don't spin often enough but it's very zen.

    Thanks for the video. With all these comments about spinning dog hair, I was wondering: Could a person shave their head and crochet a wig?

    • @rachelmartin3574
      @rachelmartin3574 2 роки тому

      A shocking number of people do, though human hair has it's own shaft which differs from person to person far more. It isn't something many have interest in, but for more info check out how full-human hair wigs are crafted and you'll see for yourself.

    I make my own spindles from components purchased at Lee Valley stores. They work better than my more expensive spindles. You can read more in this blog post: chezlizzie.blogspot.com/2015/10/peak-colour-and-better-spindle.html . I think the toy wheel works so well as a whorl because all its weight is in the outer rim.
