She want to experience a different life than what she's seen here and if you can't accept that, you've chosen to lose your daughter. Not the other way around. That's 1 thing that gets me about the Amish community. They say they're more pious & they think their way of life is better but they have the habit of shunning people over the smallest things when they should be supportive of their family members and neighbors regardless. They shun mentally ill people, people who have struggled with their faith, kids who leave the Amish community, and expect that to make them want to come back or change their ways. It's shitty to do to people.
So glad to see someone else make this comment! I saw the actual episode and it gets my blood boiling. The Amish want to demonize us for every little thing we do but yet they are no better. When your parents raised you in a controlling environment, you have no idea how much it becomes hard to make a choice about something. You constantly worry what your family would think, feel guilty like you're doing something wrong because you didn't got a permission, or simply afraid until you're told to so something. It's toxic.
it's literally that bad, people don't get it. I immediately married a guy that made me ask permission to eat or pee. eventually I had great friends that helped me get out and become knowledgeable, and it took lots of therapy and counseling for me to understand codependency. I still struggle to stay away from that
There's absolutely nothing wrong with "worrying about what your family thinks". It's usually known as your conscious that you developed thanks to one's upbringing. Not all parents are great, but in this day and age discipline is sadly known as "controlling". What you are saying is typical of a narcissistic personality, and it is prevalent in modern times. You need to Google: "relationship with your mother" and"relationship with your father".
@@aribrahim1898 wrong. I grew up with a army grandfather. Army dad. Navy. Mom Discipline is perfectly fine. Wonderful even. The controlling these folks are talking about. Is not Discipline. Here. First hand as i live in a rural area where the Amish are very prevalent.
When I lived near an Amish community, in PA, our Walmart had a hitching post, in the parking lot, so the Amish could park their Horse and Buggy. I don't believe that they've never been in a grocery store. They ran their own stores too. I used to shop at an Amish run grocery all the time.
No see you have that wrong just grouping Amish people together. There are multiple different sects one of which is the Mennonite which are allowed to shop in grocery stores and what not. When I was a teenager I worked at walmart and saw them all the time, they even have check books. Some sects stay away from all machinery but other Amish people believe they can use tractors and cars as long as they are painted black and there is no shiny metal or chrome type fixtures on them and they need to have non rubber tires. It is weird stuff figuring out the differences between them but these girls seem to be from an old Amish traditional community that is the most strict type.
No, she’s correct. Amish still have to shop in stores for things they cannot make or grow themselves. I currently live in an area in northern Pennsylvania where there are a lot of Amish. And I grew up next to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where there is a huge Amish community. The Mennonites are different. They go from strict to mainstream. Our neighbors were Mennonite where I grew up, and they were just like everyone else on the block. And a lot of the kids I went to school with were Mennonite, also. For a lot of them it was no different than being Methodist or Lutheran. There are still some old school Mennonites that wear caps and paint their car bumpers black etc. But they are dwindling.
In some amish cultures they celebrate a holiday called Rumspringa where before you turn into a full adult you can have three weeks - months to experience the english world at the end youre supposed to return to the amish and its supposed to prove your your faith to the culture and in the end its really up to the person to decide whether they stay or not i hope you see this!!
I actually went on a buggy ride that the Amish give in Pennsylvania. We got to see all the farm land and the driver explained a lot about their community. He also said that he actually left the Amish community for about 20 years, and then eventually came back because he missed the simplicity. It was a very interesting story to hear about.

it doesn't even take that much space! You got 10 square feet of empty space (don't lie to me, yes you do)? Then you have space for 8-10 fully grown tomato plants, or a mix of tomatoes and peppers or whatever. Is that space indoors? 5 gallon buckets are cheap af... take one, put a couple inches of gravel in it, then lay down some screen over the gravel and fill the rest with dirt. Slap a tomato or pepper plant in that bitch and you're set. Just water it when the soil starts drying out a bit (you can let the soil in hot peppers dry a little, gives you hotter peppers) and you will literally have more than you can eat by yourself. There is literally no excuse not to have at least one edible plant in or around your house.

There’s a lot of cultural issues in America regarding heritage because people were discriminated and segregated based on ancestry unless they were English. Since the Amish were Dutch based and the rest of the US was mostly English at the time they referred to everyone else as the English and the name stuck and basically means outsider to them.
Many non English speakers that reside in the American continent refer to English speakers as "The English". It's just how it is. It's a way to denote that you're an English native speaker and so, you are of a different culture than they are.

I don't know where these girls are from but in Lancaster county PA it isn't uncommon to see old order Amish people in stores like Walmart, and they regularly both do business with the English so they are well aware of things like groceries and stuff in these stores even if they don't buy them. I feel like so much of this show must be staged. Amish people also will not shun their children if they leave the community before they are baptized, you are only shunned if you leave the community after baptism. Amish are anabaptists who do not get baptized until they are adults, so they make a conscious choice to join the church. Some Amish communities have a period called Rumspringa where a lot of the rules are relaxed a bit until they commit to baptism, basically their adolescence. I don't know if these girls are supposed to have been baptized already or not.
I live in NWPA and see amish and mennonites a lot, but from my personal observation, it's usually adult amish men and women. Maybe they are too young to have traveled with the adults before this. She want to experience a different life than what she's seen here and if you can't accept that, you've chosen to lose your daughter. Not the other way around.
Army dad. Navy. Mom
Discipline is perfectly fine. Wonderful even. The controlling these folks are talking about. Is not Discipline. Here. This is the definition of Discipline and controlling. :
the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience.
"a lack of proper parental and school discipline"
Control :the power to influence or direct people's behavior or the course of events.
"the whole operation is under the control of a production manager"
Bonus. narcissism :
selfishness, involving a sense of entitlement, a lack of empathy, and a need for admiration, as characterizing a personality type.
@@adamvraden7915 Are you talking about your own family when describing "controlling"?

@@aribrahim1898 no. My family wasn't controlling. They saved me. I was saying. That the amish are often controlling in ways that are baffling. I am all for discipline. And hard work.
But they are dwindling.

it doesn't even take that much space! Amish are of German decent usually and they call everyone not them in America the English.

I call homesteading being frugal. Sure you can spend a lot of money on having cows for no reason lol but you can definitely save tons if you do it correctly.
I homestead and work a normal job in a city 45 minutes away. We have chickens, bare land, and solitude, but also rely on society for some needs. Still not gon get a cow tho lol, too expensive.
Where I live, we got farmers markets where you can sell your goods. In my state they legalized it where you can sell anything out of your garden or anything you grew agriculturally.
The Amish language is so interesting. I am German and I actually understand most of it. It sounds like a mixture of German Platt-Deutsch, which is a Dialect, and English.
platt is actually not a dialect, it's its own language!
Amish and Mennonites speak Pennsylvania Dutch, which is based on pfälzisch dialects. There are surprisingly many people who speak some kind of German in the Us and Canada.

Wait until they hear how much an entire plot of LAND costs. No, wait until they hear about how much a whole COW costs. Wait, feed and water?? Money too. Labour? Oh my gaaawwd.

I also live near an amish community and they shop at walmart all the time.
I live in NWPA and see amish and mennonites a lot, but from my personal observation, it's usually adult amish men and women. Maybe they are too young to have traveled with the adults before this. I can see the young ladies being stuck at home doing what their family deem is appropriate "chores or jobs or w/e" While the parents go and handle the business dealings and stuff outside. While also "shielding" The kids from the sinful outside world and ways. I don't know. Just my theory on it, with my limited knowledge.
@@jimjam4082 That’s certainly not the experience I’ve had with the Amish in the Pennsylvania area. Go to a Target on any weekend night and the teens are hanging out there, go play mini golf and they’re there, go into the stores or fast food places they’re all over the place… many of them will help out at their parents businesses, like farm stands or food counters or small shops. Like I said, maybe the Amish community these girls come from is more sheltered, but it hasn’t been my experience that the Amish stay this ridiculously sheltered.
I agree. Amish here most definitely know about groceries. They buy food in all the same places as English. Many here own Bent & Dent discount grocery shops where they buy truckloads of damaged or recently outdated food from local Walmarts.

I'm going to amend that statement: "Guilt and DELUSION are the glue that holds dysfunctional families together."
I had to go through something similar when I left Mormonism. You’re made to feel like you’re tearing your family apart, there is a lot of guilt and shame...I feel for that girl.
Im just saying, if you are outcasted for leaving or questioning, you may be in a cult.
As an LDS person, it breaks my heart that your family treated you that way. I have multiple siblings that have left the church and my family is fully supportive of them doing what they think is best for them. They are happy and that's what matters. Sure, it makes me sad because I believe in the teachings of the church, but I'm glad to see them happy at the same time.
Roseanne’s mom sounds like she gets it, but also needs to make Roseanne know of the overall consequences. Saying that Rose can visit, you can tell she loves her daughter unconditionally and acts as a real parent should.

"Why wouldn't you just get a cow and milk the cow?"
Buying a chicken to get a "free" egg a day is already pushing it, but a cow?!
actually chickens are insanely cheap and its getting quite popular to get them. atleast where I live in the california high desert. a cow however, is absurd.
If you want a cow to produce milk, I guess you're going to have to get another one that's male. And then, be prepared to welcome your third baby one. 👀

@@louis5668 ah, you meant it *literally.* In that case, no, we're not doing those things and we're not lazy for doing our jobs. You can be self sufficient in Australia. Lots of people live off the grid in outer suburbs. Solar, batteries, veggie patch, fruit trees etc...

After I injured my arm working on the ambulance lifting, well, large ass people up a zillion stairs, I had to go to the doctor. He said I needed a cortisone injection in my arm.
