I grew up a few towns over from where the spy’s actually came ashore in real life, in Winter Harbor, Maine. They would have gotten on with their mission just fine if an old lady didn’t see them come ashore and call the authorities. The German spy’s were tracked from Maine to New York where they were caught and arrested.

I know submarines are "The SIlent Service" but this is ripping the arse out of it. The bits in Boxhead are fine as I can read the subtitles, but I can hardly hear the bits in English! Other than that, great upload and many thanks.
By this stage of the war of the atlantic U boats could not stay on the surface for long, they would be detected very by radio message, also the flying boats did not miss their targets as they dropped 3 depth charges at about 30 degrees to the sub, certain kill.
Yeah but in this sequence the Sunderland used a mix of torpedos and depth charges somehow. Very odd loadout, but allied torpedos were notoriously shit. In comparison, like in earlier parts of this show, the uboats do have duds and various failures with torpedos, but even those were working better than allied torpedos and they made those very reliable after two or three years of R&D into the war. In 1943, the german torpedos worked good.
As for being spotted in the Atlantic, that was not always the case but Enigma was cracked several times so at this point they would get triangulated more or less, yes, but not everywhere. The Atlantic is pretty vast and not all parts were covered with aircrafts, but most of it yes. That said they also started to improve the Metox RWR at this point towards the Naxos and Tunis later on. It was not often useful but it would give heads up information if an aircraft equipped with a radar was a few kilometers away to dive asap.

How is it lol. He was clearly a major character and the captain. They had to explain what happened to him. Haufman was a good commander. He did things that command wanted. No more no less. Wasn't going win a knight cross with that but wasn't going get court marshalled

A sad fact is, that if a ship got shot down in a convoi, the others weren’t allowed to hold on and take the people on theire boat, because the risk that they will get shot down to was to high.
Uboat captains often went back to save sailors, give supplies or directions. Until an infamous incident when an uboat painted a red cross on its conning tower and got destroyed by an allied bomber aircraft, and the aircrew got rewarded for the sinking despite the uboat's signaling that they were not combative and converted themselves as a hospital ship. At this point, Dönitz ordered to stop helping or picking up survivors and so most of the time captains stopped doing that, unless they were absolutely sure they could provide help without consequences. Otherwise yes, convoys couldn't stop, had to zig zag and accelerate out of dodge if attacked. That said warships could save sailors after a while but even then it's not guaranteed. Boat airplanes like the Short Sunderland could do it too.

I am super confused! I saw the Das Boot series and while it looks like the same plot it was different. This has some of the characters I saw as well as some different ones. Was there two series? Or maybe this is a continuation of the original series?

Those were inflated so it didn't take that much space although they only had one per uboat if I'm correct.

I speak German... so I can look at both languages...
The original film Das Boot, I first watched it in German, with English subtitles. I thought it was great that way. The crew was always under tension and me not being able to understand exactly what they were saying in German added to my own sense of uncertainty, trying to keep up. I watched the English dubbed version later and didn't enjoy it as much though that's my only language.
Somebody please tell me this series is on Dvd and where. This is an excellent series.

Yeah no this series is too much fake drama for me. I still watch because I don't judge before watching but the subplots, people beating each other for some reason and betrayals, it's nonsense and not that well written. This is way too much of a Netflix typical scenario and directing. You can watch any shows these days, they all have the same copypaste artificial betrayals, deaths, subplots, even when they go bathing next to the uboat they have to make a jumpy situation with an aircraft attack and it's tasteless at this point. Why not actually make it a wholesome moment for a change where they have fun and share the moment together? I guess it will cater to the modern audience which wants boom bang kaboom action every minute because they can't enjoy lengthy humane moments. Fun fact: that's exactly what nazi propaganda did and the americans took inspiration on this to make their movies. So much shit blowing up, so much violence that it will brainwash the audience into liking it.
