Ah, the impossible freshness of youth, mixed with the promise of the new-fangled electronic kit. Simmons’ extra-exaggerated marketing idea that somehow these would ‘replace’ acoustic drums was so wildly off the mark as to be comical. They should have concentrated on the much better idea that they could be functionally completely different from acoustic drums - as different as a Rhodes electric piano is from a Steinway Grand. But in the right context, the Rhodes beats the Grand. And eventually it became such that any pad could generate any sound, or combinations of sounds, at any time. Not too shabby. #billbrufordsearthworks
It is absolutely refreshing to hear an interviewer ask Music questions. Bill seems thrilled to share and give the tour.
It does seem that Leslie Judd knew her way around a drum kit.
She is indeed a skilled interviewer !!! (this is wonderful)
Yes he is - a nice deep voice and pretty English accent plus he speaks readily, without yyyyms or eeeems, without abusing "you know" repetition or lengthy pauses. You can immediately tell a really intelligent speaker.
This is wonderful; Bill is so pleasant, polite and patient, but the interviewer clearly isn't some ditz that got the job based solely on her looks. She asks pertinent questions, and Bill answers clearly and simply, so that we, the tech geeks in the audience, can understand. 😀😀😀
TV time.
The legendary Lesley Judd.
I worked on a different episode of MicroLive in the 1980's and met Mac and Lesley Judd. They were both genuinely interested in what they were presenting, and were knowledgable and asked intelligent questions during their interviews. They were a delight to work with.
It amazes me how she knows the terms for drumming when interviewing you! Some might these days not know what they're even asking about but she definitely did her research!
That was Lesley Judd, former Blue Peter presenter. She knew her stuff 🙂
I noticed that too. The interviewer was very, very good.
Fox News would do better.
Lesley was married at the time to Anthony Relph who was a drummer
@@ChrisHopkinsBass There you go then! Didn't know that. 🙂
So amazing to see Simmons' interviewed! Thank you, Bill!
I just got a Roland electronic kit and as much as I appreciate the realistic acoustic sounds it has, what I really want is that classic Simmons sound from those 80’s crimson albums!
"The sound storage can be anywhere between 8 to 32 kilobytes". One and a half megabytes of ROM in total! :-)
_"What are you going to use it for?"_
_"Games, and stuff."_
HA!
/ Software used to be written in as few commands as absolutely necessary... Economy was the rule. We've long since moved past the necessity for such economy but from programmings birth, right up until very recently, bloated convoluted software was an absolute sin
Bill was not only a brilliant drummer but one ahead of his time. I was lucky enough to go to one of his Simmons drum clinics in NY and was thoroughly impressed
Thank you for this Bill! My first bit of Simmons kit was a white SDS1 round about the same time as this. It had the E-Prom socket built right into it that you could swap out for any sound in the Simmons library. I still have it to this day!
Fantastic! I met my hero Dr. William S. Bruford PhD once at Yoshi's, Oakland, California almost 20yrs ago???? - it was an Earthworks concert. The night's performance was recorded and released as a CD and I can hear myself doing "Bravo!" in one track as it fades. I like to amuse myself by considering myself a recording artist (hey heh!), having appeared in one of Bill's records! The track ends right after my contribution - that Bravo! So, I like to think my performance was rather acceptable to Bill. Thanks loads Bill, it's a great honor! I have a large collection of your music, and UK debut album (1978) is my desert island album.
Nice. I met Allan for the second time in my life at Yoshi's in 2007. We talked for about 15 minutes, he told me about his divorce and how his wife took his studio, and how he had been afraid to go out in public, i could kinda tell that he had been cajoled to play out. I cofounded his semi-official facebook group, The Unreal Allan holdsworth, but I quit facebook last year, and no longer listen to fusion music...
Great interview! Very articulate and entertaining as always.
Fantastic clip! Cheers Mr. B. 👍
this chick knows more about drums than any interviewer I've ever heard.
I'll let you in on a little secret: Most interviewers are given a list of questions to ask from the person being interviewed. Shows like this in particular are largely scripted.
Apparently at the time of the interview, she (Lesley Judd, well known TV presenter in the 70s and 80s) was married to a drummer. So she was not only very capable in terms of her TV experience, but almost certainly had a reasonable understanding of the subject matter.
@@GodmanchesterGoblin Lesley Judd did not marry Anthony Relph until several years after this was filmed. Or were you referring to one of her previous husbands?
@@rockets4kids Apologies. Obviously I was not fully aware of the chronology.
@@GodmanchesterGoblin No need to apologize. She certainly could be an excellent drummer herself. My point is that a good presenter of this type does not need deep background on the subject matter in order to put on a good program.
I still like Simmons and electronic drums ever since! Thanks to you!
"Like Bill, I was slogging around the country in various unknown groups." 😄
I was fortunate to have access to one of these years ago. Beast of a machine.
Thanks for unloading all of these, Bill. I read your biography and was pretty upset when I finished it and realized you never finished the Union MSG story! Could you please let us know how it ended? Fitting that I ask as a comment on this video. :)
Definitely alongside the acoustic kit, but somehow, nice on its own if one knows how to play it like you do.
one of the greatest rock drummers
'which you're leaning on...' polite telling off lol. Love it .
I remember watching this at the time. Excellent.
Very well done. Bravo!
wow....38 years ago! The year I graduated from High School! UGH!
Great to see Bill and Dave Simmons, for me he is considered the father of the electronic drums, both extremely talented in their fields.
I use a lot of Simmons gear back in the 80:S, used to have SDS-8, SDS-9 but sold it long time ago, I only kept the SDSV kit and TMI (Trigger to MIDI Interface).
Wow, I remember this show, but not this segment (I was 10!). Great stuff.
Bill. While I'm not a drummer (guitarist), still, your work has been enormously influential on me. Cheers!
It's quite possible I watched this at the time as I saw a lot of those shows back then. Ian McNaught-Davis did a few about computers that featured the BBC Micro I had. Now I'm getting into drumming and have a basic electronic kit, but the Simmons must have blown a few minds back then. Great to see Lesley Judd knowing her stuff. Bill was on the cutting edge. I bet 1.5MB of storage cost a fortune back then, but each sample these days might be bigger than that.
I feel old, I was born in 84.
spectacular 80s shirt on Bill here.
I love this vintage kind of electronic drums
That was just delicious - more!!!
So rad to see the gods just joshing about. Epic-casual
I remember watching this at the time. The only thing I could ever afford though was the SpecDrum for the ZX spectrum. (Reviewed by Fred Harris on this show)
Those pads were hard rubber, unlike the mesh heads we have today. I know the main complaint about the early days of Simmons drums was that it caused many wrist injuries due to the unforgiving pads.
One and a half megabytes! Not just one, one and a half! Gosh! 😄
i like the way the simmons sdsv sounds, wish i could afford one
Absolument bravo for her...Bill is gréât of course !
The mixer brain I had. You could bend the pitch of the toms . Sounds even expensive kits don't make
"I think we should terminate our relationship right here."
Awesome
Even Gregg Allman utilized electronic kit for his big come back.
Genius!
The interviewer seems well-prepared and interested. Had she been an American she'd have asked inane questions and then spilled coffee on Bill's kit - causing fireworks & explosions etc.
THIS MAN HAS ANOTHER HIDDEN HAND...HE AMAZES !
There is still a place for electronic and acoustic gear to combine well in any kit.
Whenever I see hear these I think Tomas Dolby & Def Leppard. Would love to get my hands on a Simmons on reverb. So damn expensive tho
It's quite funny to see that todays music gear still runs on 50 year old tech.
Kilobytes, and megabytes, words you don't often hear anymore. They really had to keep their code base to a minimum to allow for more functionality.
Lovely, lovely?
I love the way he chose the stripper as a piece of music.
Is this Lesley Judd?
Yes.
Is that Lesley Judd post Blue Peter? Yes it is! Microlive - a long forgotten BBC nerd fest!
Ok, the drums are cool, but big up that bloke's dog impersonation!
Hey, get off my pad!!!
1.5mb. that probably cost a bomb lol
I hate those sounds by themselves., better to mix it up with acoustic.
In retrospect, pretty gawd awful,
Good lord those sound terrible.
