@Drew Ariel I keep seeing this bullshit about some bullshitter hacking some bullshit account, and the same bullshit reply saying the bullshit looks promising, will you please go away with your bullshit!
i think this case does not humiliate audi r8 but it definitly shows what Renault "Sport" can do. Renault Sport is not a Renault. There are some guy fan of German cars but i want to inform them in my county mercedes sells cars with renault 1.6 diesel engine and bmw sells cars with 1.6 gasoline peugeot engines.
So a Renault that cost 50.000€ is almost as fast as a Audi that Cost 170.000€ ... not bad (and even if they are slick tire they cost lest thant the R8 road tyre lol )
Very interesting match up. I knew it would come down to the length of the straights. If the Audi was allowed to stretch its legs then it would win, if the course had shorter straights then the Clio would take it with its sticky tires and race car handling. Luckily this track has a great balance of straights and twisties to make this a very close battle! I'd love to see more comparisons like this. Great job, Evo!
+mazin2892 The biggest part of the handlings in a car comes from the tires not from the downforce and i know that from interviews with Formula 1 aerodynamics engineers they said that and also i've noticed that on my car when i've changed tires !!
Downforce is just a mutliplier on the tyre grip. [ Traction force ] = ( weight + downforce ) * tyre friction coefficient, where friction coefficient is a function of tyre temperature and slip angle
Wow...that was much closer of a time than I would have thought! It's amazing how horsepower doesn't do a whole lot when the track is relatively short and there's lots of tight turns, at that point it's all about suspension, tires, and weight. This really shows what stripping an extra thousand pounds out of a car will do for it's performance as well. Nice Video!
Well, apart from slicks, the biggest reason Clio was so close is because R8 is too damn heavy, especially for a car made of aluminum and CF. Though Clio is a bit heavy for a stripped-out hatch, too, should've been 900-950 kilos.
Man let me tell you, I drove the Audi R8 4.2 v8 on a driving experience and the manual gator was shocking, I stepped out of that straight into a Gallardo 5.0 v10 and it had flappy paddles, my god what a difference! The gator on the R8 is completely aluminum which probably explains the sound, not covered by a leather sleeve like a regular car for example, very clunky and not to my taste, I found it awkward to use
Henry 01 here is me kiddie crying "NO UR WRANG!!!!" You will understand one day that ferraris, lambos and the likes are not at your reach, once you get your driving license son
Renault cars are not the best for taking corners quickly. And if it is as you say that Ferraris and Lamborghinis are not at my reach they're still not the best at taking corners.Caterhams are far better.Ariel Atom is far better, aswell as Radicals. And the BAC Mono.Seat Leon Cupra 280 is far better.
Interesting video, with this long straight i wouldn´t have thought the clio to do the same time. again proves what wheight is very very essential on track use.
Reminds me of a day at Blyton when a crappy stripped out cheap and cheerful Clio 172 on slicks was one of the quickest cars on track and it was worth eff all (no offence to the owners).
Reminds me of a day I had at brands hatch in a crappy stripped out Clio 182 with race suspension and Brembo brakes on slicks, it cost as much as the so called performance cars that were a lot slower. The best bit was a lad who raced go carts in a stripped out Saxo on slicks his dad had found in a local bin, was faster than all of us !! £1000 spent and free talent!!
It is V10 plus he special optioned it out with a 6 speed manual...that's why Mr. Meaden is the man. Keep in mind the Clio is outweighed by 300+ KGs also. Do the math that's a ton of horsepower gained back, then couple it with slicks. Awesome vid would love to see more of the driver window view where we can see the wheel movements more first person views would be excellent. Thanks again for very cool compare
Tires alone,no, with serious suspension mods, a massive weight reduction and race components all over added to the slicks, the car becomes a supercar killer
haha indeed, Blyton massively favours small agile cars. Even my little 1.6 Caterham can show itself as one of the fastest things out there, with huge power cars struggling to wriggle round the tight little circuit. Its on my my favourite "small car" tracks, along with cadwell. Big power, take it to Donington or even Croft, you'll soon see that audi flex its muscle a bit more convincingly.
Yeah but at Blyton park, big cars just don't work. I was there this week in both a 420R Caterham and a current M3 Competition Pack running around 550hp, and the BMW felt like an enormous boat around such a small track. It has no real long straights and its hard to get any real speed up in a huge power car. Go to donington park, and the time gap would be hugely in favour of the audi. This isn't a power track, it's a handling track. Sadly this doesn't prove much, just that a small car on a small track is better than a big car on a small track.
Was all ready to contribute to the slicks vs. road tyre argument, but considering the power, weight and drivetrain differences, and how damned close they were in time, I think this was actually a good test.

Jacob Todd Nope, standard and only official option for the V10 Pluis is the 7-speed double clutch transmission. Only if you ask they put the manual transmission in the Plus
Jacob Todd You are right, when they released the new R8 V10 Plus the manual transmission was standard and the 7-speed S-Tronic was an option. But only 1 out of 13 R8 is ordered with the manual one so Audi set the S-Tronic as standard. And yes, it is right, you are still able to get the lovely manual gearbox, if you ask for it. I really hope, that Audi will this offer this Option for the new generation of R8 and hopefully they also keep the real handbrake.
SaKuLification I completely agree with the handbrake! I don't want some shitty little button to hold my car, I'd much rather have a big lever to pull and impress girls with. ;-)
would be interesting to see if the V10 Audi can pull the same figures with the Clio's bigger brother, the road version 2019 Megane Trophy 300, £31,000 new and I bet that would still lap faster than the Audi..
I don't know why so many of these car vlogs insist on keeping the camera on the presenter. I would much rather have a view looking out forward as he dives or the car from the outside as it is driven around the track. This is about the cars right? I can still listen... or tune the presenter out as the case may be!
Moi ioM When they do those kind of tests, they have avarage lap time. They don't just do one. I could also tell you that the renaut lap could be perfect and the audis with a lot of human mistakes. You don't know that. But anyway. Think about something else. The V10 plus, has the double clutch gear box and not the 6 speed manual. Do you know how faster the double clutch can go from one gear to an other, than you doing it with the hand? More than 0.1... (for every single time). And I;m closing with this. Rue said race cars always gonna wind road cars. AND IN THIS TIME IT DIDN'T. I don't care why and how. It just didn't my friend. And that's what I was commenting!!! Have a nice day.
So many comments about the manual transmission. As far as I know officially you only get the 7-speed double clutch gearbox in the Plus, but if you ask, Audi will put the manual 6-speed in the car
Would just love to point out that the Continental Sport Contacts on the V10+ are complete garbage for track work when it comes to setting lap times. Car needs at least Michelin Pilot Super Sports or the other P Zeros on which the other R8's come with. Any road legal track tire or aggressive summer tire would've made a significant impact on the R8 here, opening the gap even more so.
I own a normal Clio Phase II 1.4 L 100HP 5 doors model 2003-4 i bought it brand new in April 2nd 2004 : It's a nice car for everyday use and also for long distances it doesn't tire me driving it :-) Now about this video to be honest i was expecting Audi to win but i got surprised . Of course the Clio is a race car and has race settings from the other hand Audi ir a road car and although it has more power is also heavier and that's why it lost the battle !! It's an awesome car and more goodlooking than Clio but also both are tottaly different cars !! Yet it is pretty much true that european supercars are too much overrated they are much - much more expensive that what they offer unlike Japanese and American cars yet i'm not saying that european supercars are not good they are just too much expensive !! Personally i'm a fun of Vettes and especially for the new c7 zo6 and also i'm a fun of Godzillas -Nissan GT-Rs .Those cars in relation to european supercars offer so many things without costing too much :-)
Well for relevance I think i quite clearly portrays what a huge difference there is between race cars and fast road cars. Many know this already but hey is there not also a lot commenting going on where it´s all about the horse power and so forth. And one must also admit that these two cars despite them being so different came quite close on lap time.
Yeah they do but they are slower than todays coupes and supersaloons so people don't buy them also they have facelifted and look almost identical to the v10
I think that the driver found it easier to get close to the best possible time in the audi than in the clio, I think with someone with more experience behind the wheel of the clio they would have actually been faster than they would in the audi
Damien W Indeed. There is a power difference, but also many hundred kilos of weight, slicks, race suspension and so forth. The Clio - once at speed - can keep the pace through corners much better, where the R8 need the extra hp to get back the lost time in the corners. Two very different ways of driving fast, and I'm amazed by both cars. I just wished Audi would make a gt3 style version of the R8. Imagine having the V8 with less hp, but more characteristic note and power delivery. Add to that the open-gated manual, pushrod suspension, roll cage and a stripped out interior bringing weight down to about 1200 kg. Even with road legal tires that thing would eat other super cars for breakfast, and be more driver focused with the manual transmission, race suspension and low weight. Power is only needed to the point where you can actually use it, rather than spin the wheels all the time.
What is the process called at 3:10 Why is it important to go from 5th to 4th then 3rd? Why not just 5th to 3rd directly while still performing the required rev matching?
What are you talking about? He shifted from 5th to 4th then 3rd. Are you trying to say a sequential gearbox cannot go from 5th to 3rd? I have seen people do that and their car didn't just BLOW UP.
i just watched the video, he probably did it to keep the transmission in one piece. This car is NOT a sequential, but a sequential can ONLY move one up/down. high tech ones have computers that shift for you so it appears to skip gears however it still shifts sequentially, its just automated. sorry for the confusion, I didn't really watch the clip before I answered but my explanation of sequential was right.
+supercooled I think he did it that way at least in part because it's a fun challenge to do two instead of just one. I certainly go one at a time for that reason, from time to time.
+supercooled Well downshifting is used to slow the car faster combined with the brakes... I THINK.... but I myself during hard breaking would just go from 5th to 2nd for example... and don't do each gear, which is just impossible to do that fast
So do I. I figured there was a reason or benefit to do it in sequence but there are instances where I will get up to speed on the highway in 4th and just throw it in 6th rather than doing it chronologically.
cool video but everyone knows if you pit a supercar against a smaller, normally weaker car that has been gutted, tuned and on semi slicks then there won't be much of a difference in times.
Purpose built? That car is 90% stock. It has different suspension, tires, gearbox, a slight tunining on the engine, and that's about it. And the stripped out parts of the interior are changed out for a roll cage, which kinda weighs almost as much as all the parts taken out, since this race version still weighs over 1200 kg's on the track. It's incredible that a car that has more than twice the power to weight ratio is not any faster.
What's incredible is that a supercar costing well over £100,000 couldn't beat a little French hatchback with some slicks, a new gearbox and half the horsepower
derbigpr500 ummm, its not road legal, its got slick tyres, its got a sequential gearbox, its got ZF race shocks so hard that your filings would fall out if you ran over a pebble. Its sole purpose is to be as fast as possible round a track and has zero use for anything else. Renault purpose build them to order for use in a race series. I expected it to be way faster than an R8 not even running semi-slicks Pilot Sport Cups.
M3Conv same here, i was actually shocked by the R8 being faster running normal road tires. really really impressive. what an amazing chassis, what an amazing generation of super sportscars!
No it's an article I read when it came out, if I wanted to waste time I'd go looking for articles on how great Aldi erm I mean Audi are, I imagine the articles are very difficult to find 😂
Nice now pick up a victoria's secret super model in that clio... They will probobly just laugh at you. Yes yes clio is faster car around corners but people ain't buy R8 for track, it's also a status symbol of i got money bitches. Remove all those nice comfy seats and put in low weight racing seats, remove all the dash and trims and covers of interior just like in clio. I bet the R8 will do under 1 min.
Nobody seems to see the only relevant point here: it looks like he's having more fun with the Clio. And it costs a quarter of the audi. If I had lots of money id get like a M3 for everyday use and a little racer like this one for the weekend. Id still have change for lots of tires sets. Heck I'm sure you'd have more fun with the m3 than the r8 on the road or track anyway
Bring back the Clio V6
Ash 928 give it a blistering dual clutch option too

Clearly you are not a driver joao 🙈🤷♂️
Renault Sport/Alpine forever ! ^^ and more it is less expensive than a supercar for more fun on track...
Wow. I was expecting the Clio to be fast, but not that close. That's impressive.

it's to balance the 500+hp of the R8 and it's super car too, the clio only 322hp however it is a race car.
Its 220 hp actually. 322hp is the difference between those two

I baffled by the laptime Clio made. Can slick-tyres really add 300HP to your lap times?
Tires alone,no, with serious suspension mods, a massive weight reduction and race components all over added to the slicks, the car becomes a supercar killer
No, it can't. It's about weight, brakes, suspension, gear box, handling and tyres. Just putting slicks on a 200 wouldn't have the same effect.
So the AWD R8 is terrible in cornering?
no you go and slap slicks on the R8 and see what happens
Greatly depends on track configuration. Not long ago saw the video where audi a1 Quattro beats Godzilla In the rain on track (sutcliffe, autocar).
Great video, blimey though you've slimmed down Dickie! Well done bloke!

That the Clio with 322hp less than the R8 just "looses" with one second ;)
I've been cross-shopping these two cars. After this video I can now make a better informed decision. Thanks EVO
That Clio was tripod-ing all over the place!
***** If it's not too much trouble, could you post the time of both cars together at the end? Thanks
The manual gearbox on the R8 looks sublime!
That's not the V10 plus. V10 plus has double clutch gearbox.
Standard is manual, the S - tronic is an option.
Jacob Todd Nope, standard and only official option for the V10 Pluis is the 7-speed double clutch transmission. Only if you ask they put the manual transmission in the Plus
There you go then, you can get a manual in the top R8. :-)
Jacob Todd
You are right, when they released the new R8 V10 Plus the manual transmission was standard and the 7-speed S-Tronic was an option.
I can still listen... or tune the presenter out as the case may be!
you look in good shape Dickie, keep it up!
Dickie Meaden has been on a serious weight loss programme! Kudos.
that clio is massive
Race car always gonna win vs road car despite the big hp gap,if only the road Clio was a bit like this instead of that Golf Gti bullshit type hatch.
Well it lost in this one. By only 0,1sec, but it lost.
Moi ioM
When they do those kind of tests, they have avarage lap time.
Why did the timer for the Clio start at 1 second and not 0 seconds?
I really like that you can order even the R8 plus with a manual gearbox
quite like these types of videos! F430 challenge car VS speciale next!
So many comments about the manual transmission. As far as I know officially you only get the 7-speed double clutch gearbox in the Plus, but if you ask, Audi will put the manual 6-speed in the car
It's all about power to weight ratio my friends
Would just love to point out that the Continental Sport Contacts on the V10+ are complete garbage for track work when it comes to setting lap times. Car needs at least Michelin Pilot Super Sports or the other P Zeros on which the other R8's come with. Any road legal track tire or aggressive summer tire would've made a significant impact on the R8 here, opening the gap even more so.
I own a normal Clio Phase II 1.4 L 100HP 5 doors model 2003-4 i bought it brand new in April 2nd 2004 :
It's a nice car for everyday use and also for long distances it doesn't tire me driving it :-)
Now about this video to be honest i was expecting Audi to win but i got surprised .
Personally i'm a fun of Vettes and especially for the new c7 zo6 and also i'm a fun of Godzillas -Nissan GT-Rs .Those cars in relation to european supercars offer so many things without costing too much :-)
on
What clock is the guy wearing? Hope anybody knows
got to love hot hatches :)
You should show a drag race in every video!
This guys a good driver
Manual in a V10 Plus???
What relevance is there on these 2 cars going head to head?? Next week a scania HGV against a mclaren P1.
Somehow I like your suggestion :D
its a bit of fun
Well for relevance I think i quite clearly portrays what a huge difference there is between race cars and fast road cars. Many know this already but hey is there not also a lot commenting going on where it´s all about the horse power and so forth. And one must also admit that these two cars despite them being so different came quite close on lap time.
Actually come to think of it a Scania truck was raced against a Koenigsegg One:1 last year.
Well done mate
You can say whatever you want, it appears that the Clio is WAY more exciting to drive.
Is the Clio RWD or FWD?
does audi still make a v8 r8? i havent seen a non v10 r8 video in years
Yes they do, and IMO they sound better than the V10s
nope
Yeah they do but they are slower than todays coupes and supersaloons so people don't buy them also they have facelifted and look almost identical to the v10
AndrewMacedonia Yes
sam koivisto nah
Is anyone else more shocked that the Audi beat the Clio?
yep. would be good to see a time difference trace.
Renault❤️
What is the process called at 3:10
Why is it important to go from 5th to 4th then 3rd?
Au titre !!! Quelle rapport entre les 2 voiture ???😞😞
The plus only comes with S-Tronic, that is just a V10 with ceramic brakes.
Awesome
the numbers?
Looks like he's having more fun with the Clio. But the stereo must be better in the Audi.
+1 for manual transmission! :D dat clicking gear shifts.
A manual trans! My god! Good to see though I bet the dsg is quicker :-)
I like that you use a Manual in the Audi.
It's pretty to have V10 & all that power with a manual gear box
Quite impressive really, tight track or not.
Incredible that a refined and luxury GT car running standard road tyres can beat a stripped out purpose built race car running on slick tyres.
Totally agree. Those slicks you shouldn't underestimate them...
What's incredible is that a supercar costing well over £100,000 couldn't beat a little French hatchback with some slicks, a new gearbox and half the horsepower
derbigpr500
ummm, its not road legal, its got slick tyres, its got a sequential gearbox, its got ZF race shocks so hard that your filings would fall out if you ran over a pebble.
I can't decide which car is faster before watching result of track time
No it's an article I read when it came out, if I wanted to waste time I'd go looking for articles on how great Aldi erm I mean Audi are, I imagine the articles are very difficult to find 😂
He clearly wasn't even pushing that hard in the Clio. Clio could of easily smashed the R8s time
Renault, put a V6 engine and RWD on the Clio IV. Please, do it!
Oh wow a manual R8, Bout damned time.
Continental tires are the worst! The poor Audi never had a chance.
Why did he keep saying the R8 has 542hp, it has 550hp
I think he's talking brakehorsepower, 550 must be PS measure.
because uk hp and ps are not the same
I believe it is his long term (1 year?) test car, so he should know.
DG754 ok thanks
1 hp/bhp = 1,01387 PS (metric hp)
542 hp/bhp = 550 PS (metric hp)
Apparently that's not the R8 V10 Plus. The only R8 model with a manual gearbox has a 4,2l V8 with 316KW (430HP). Shame on you!
Last time i Saw the R8, it was a propper Sportscar...
put a set of Advan Neova AD08's on that audi (which is still a street tyre) would of smashed the renault. the only thing was the tyres slicks LOL
That clio is just epic.. Bravo RenaultSport ! Btw that R8 is not the Plus
Renault sport is a watered down version of the F1/GT3. They know their shit
Just add slicks and job is done. IMHO
er5400 agreed
Nobody buys an R8 as a status symbol, most non-car people would just mistake it for a TT.
say that to the guy who plays ironman
Leo S.
I'm afraid I don't have his phone number
Nobody seems to see the only relevant point here: it looks like he's having more fun with the Clio. And it costs a quarter of the audi.
If I had lots of money id get like a M3 for everyday use and a little racer like this one for the weekend. Id still have change for lots of tires sets.
Heck I'm sure you'd have more fun with the m3 than the r8 on the road or track anyway
