George McGinnis grew up in Indianapolis not Minniapolis .He is a legend in Indiana. High school ,IU and Pacers.

Thank you for this. As an avid basketball fan I appreciate the talent each of these players brought to the game and to fans. They deserve recognition and our appreciation. I saw Tex Winter in one of the photos. He was someone I admired very much as an assistant coach with the Lakers and a mentor to one of the greatest coaches of the game, Phil Jackson.
Well done, much respect.

Chris Ford wasn't the first player to hit a 3 pointer. It was an ABA player. Chris Ford was the first in the nba.
Actually, the minor major league AMERICAN BASKETBALL LEAGUE which operated during ‘61-62 and had future NBA’ers DICK BARNETT, CONNIE HAWKINS, and BILL BRIDGES, etc. playing, and which tried to sign JERRY LUCAS, with BILL SHARMAN also in his first pro hoops head coaching slot…
not only featured a three-point shot, but had a pretty famous owner named…
GEORGE STEINBRENNER who owned the CLEVELAND PIPERS..
The first BLACK AMERICAN HEAD COACH OF A MAJOR-ish league pro team coached that CLEVELAND team.. his name was JOHN MCCLENDON..who before that ABL turn won several NAIA NATIONAL titles during segregation years in the JIM CROW south.
Many of those NAIA squads had major college talent and future great pros on their rosters..
In addition, the 18 feet wide free throw lane used by the ABL was bigger than the then-12 footer width used by the NBA. Today, in the NBA the lane including hashmarks for standing before each shot, is 16 feet wide, changed from 12 shortly after the ABL folded..
The ABL also used a 30 second shot clock..
THE ABA did, too.
The ABA came along in 1967..
The ABL was the true pioneer..

Damn. I feel old. Had I chosen to attend Villanova on a basketball scholarship, I would have been Chris Ford's teammate. That '71 team only played 6 guys on a rotation basis yet they were able to make it to the finals against UCLA. . the perennial champs in Wooden's era. I've often wondered about my decision.
I remember Ryan Minor for his baseball career at Oklahoma. I believe he was the winning pitcher in the College World Series against Ga Tech in '94 . This was before the present format in which the winning team has to win 2 of 3. Ga Tech was loaded. Jason Varitek, Nomar Garciaparra and Jay Payton were stars on that team but they fell short to Minor and the Sooners who won a single game championship. He passed away far too soon.
Wow, The Greyhound Walter Davis of Phoenix passed?? He was one of MJ's favorite players along with David Thompson. Also a Carolina Tarheel. RIP Mr. Davis

McGinnis lived in Indianapolis, IN. He played HS ball at Geo Washington, where in 1969 he led them to a state championship and an undefeated season.
He and Steve Downing were absolutely amazing as HS players

I didn't know Walter Davis had passed. I remember seeing him in a restaurant in Denver a few years ago. He was at the table over from mine and still looked sleek and good. He just had a smooth manner about him.
RIP to all of those players and individuals who made a contribution to the game of basketball.Notice that a lot of these players were multi sport athletes? I don’t know why this is not encouraged more with today’s athletes.
I still remember coming home from school one day, in 1970, Lakers vs NY Knicks. Willis Reed came out limping. Think it was game 7. Somehow, Reed willed his team to winning that game, don't remember much else except that one particular moment when he came out to still play, think he originally was not supposed to play. The rest is history, one tough hombre.
Willis Reed, I would read him and Spencer Haywood, in the Sports Illustrated JR. He taught me how to enjoy reading.

Walter Davis; Rookie of the Year and NBA Allstar. Had one of the sweetest jump shots ever. It always looked like it was going in. Suns game announcer, Al McCoy, nick named him, Sweet D., because his shooting motion was smooth. They barely moved the net when the ball went through it. RIP Sweet D.

The Greyhound, say it isn't so. He was so smooth. I also miss George McGinnis and Willis Reed. Willis's walk into the Garden after he had injured his hip to play against Wilt still gives me chills. George "Big Mac" McGinnis had this one handed push shot. His hands were so huge. I used to always argue with my friend about who was better Maurice Lucas, Elvin Hayes, or George McGinnis. I liked Big Mac. He carried Philadelphia on his shoulders for a while. May they all rest in peace.
Walter Davis was also known for the Velvet touch and sweet D. When played for the Phoenix Suns. And yes he ran like a greyhound.

Makes me think of Dennis Johnson/Celtic! I love the sport & played too! I had to finally let it go in my mid 40’s! Had a young buck land on my right shoulder with his elbow! Couldn’t raise my arm over my head for nearly a month! Some play rougher than normal… especially when they’re playing older skilled players! “They think they have something to prove!?” Lol!
One thing he admitted to me later was…. He said you can really shoot the basketball very good way outside!!! When I left high school, they started the 3 point shot! We had players on our team would have had a field day with 3pt shooting!😅
