How to Catch a Butterfly without a net using your hands

- Butterflies are fragile and this technique will undoubtedly rub scales off the wings but does far less damage than using a net which the butterfly flaps against and it tears their wings.
Butterflies do not die from people touching their wings. The butterfly in this video will fly off and continue doing its thing. It only lost some scales from its wings being touched. If the wings are only broken a little, the butterfly will still be able to fly. She will be ok. I saw a Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly just like the one in this video with most of its wings missing and broken off. He still flew around with no problem. So just touching the wings of a butterfly does not hurt it (as long as you do it gently and not harshly). I do it when needed with my own butterflies and moths, and gently grabbing their wings might be necessary when moving them around. I also have to do it sometimes to get the butterflies out of the net for release. Don't worry.
It is a common myth that they die from touching wings. Just gently touching the wings is okay.
@Dewbow134 true
It's not a good way to catch them. you damaged butterfly's wings a lot

It's better than using a net at least.
Arabian Kidz I can't agree. when you catch butterfly in a net it doesn't damage it's wings because butterfly stops moving
@@Стефания-ы7г it does not stop moving it stills move and in the net it's more cramped, they might get their legs stuck in the tiny holes of the net and may break their legs, using hands is just a better alternative to nets
If you grab them by the torso it doesn’t damage them, it’s the best way to catch them
@@arabiankidz6968 or you can just not catch butterflies. If you wanna put them on display you should raise them and wait for them to naturally die. It’s not like they live long.
I gently pinch both wings together, then I put one finger under the butterfly so it can hold on and my thumb on top so I can see it's wings.
I “catch” them with patience. I kinda slowly shove my hand underneath them until they walk on my hand all tho it doesn’t work for every butterfly. Either way I ACTUALLY don’t harm them and I definitely don’t kill them.
sometimes i put water on my hands sometimes they like the water and start drinking it.
I know you cleared this up in the description of the video but you should include this in the video itself: catching butterflies in the way you described will still damage the scales, maybe not as much as other methods (although a butterfly net is usually better especially for smaller butterflies). Therefore people should not go around catching butterflies like this, the only reasons I see to do this is are for research or educating kids, better not to do this as a regular thing or a hobby.
I get so many goosebumps because I feel its legs when I touch a butterfly XD
Just put ur finget on their leg.. they will follow u.. never catch the wings.. it hurts
Butterflies dont feel pain. But that doesnt mean we should all handle them as roughly as this dude lol
Actually they don’t have feelings in their wings. Their wings are like fingernails to them. But if their wing is damaged they will probably die
@@MeekaChannel damaged wings do not "kill" a butterfly all the time. Butterflies can survive with huge chunks of their wings missing. I had a butterfly that emerged from her chrysalis with a missing wing from a deformity, and yet she lived a long time and could even fly short distances! A lot of times, even without a predator attack, butterfly's wings can still crack. I once saw a butterfly that was flying with half of its wings missing and this male Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, despite having half of both of his wings chipped off, he still flew as if nothing ever happened to him. He acted as if his wings were normal. So if the wings are damaged the butterfly can still fly, even with huge chunks missing.😃
@@Kaerikillington What he meant is that it damages the wings, obviously they aren't gonna be screaming in pain
Anyways I love butterfly's and favorite insect so I just catch them and check them and just leave like how their wings design or colour is.
STOP HARMING BUTTERFLIES
It's ok to touch the wings of a butterfly, as long as you do it gently. Just getting a wing/wings a little cracked does not mean the butterfly will die. Butterflies lose scales just by doing the things butterflies do. Emerging from the chrysalis, then every time they flap their wings, scales fall off. And i've seen a butterfly with MOST OF HIS WINGS BROKEN OFF! he flew around the garden as if nothing was wrong. It is misinformation that a butterfly will die if you touch their wings.
What is wrong with this guy just leave it be just let the poor thing go.
He’s literally just picking it up
The wings were already broken in the first place. They lose scales each time they flap their wings, and every butterfly naturally loses scales even in the process of coming out of its chrysalis. The butterfly needs to be in the wild anyway, so it can live longer, and find a mate before it dies.
Idk dude… I just stand still with my arms out in the sun with bright clothes butterfly’s seem to love it. Do not grab butterflies.
Can i add i have been a professional lepidopterist for 40 years.
😢
Only hold at the base of the week next to the body. The postion shown can effect pheromone scales.
But be gentlr as there ears are jn the same location. The butrerfly should not be able to move wings while being held.
Im not sure but i think that butterfly is rare beacause i saw it own a book well dont catch it like that because you might damage the butter flies wings i had a painted lady one time somone injurged it to hold it like that so really dont recommend holding that way
Where do you live? Here in Georgia i see Eastern Tiger swallowtails all the time
One flew to my hand today
You hurt it
The wings were already cracked before the butterfly was caught. Most likely escape the bird attack with broken wings.
I catch so many butterfly
There's a different way that is more safe and does it injure them because when you damage the wings and makes it hard to fly and they cannot recover 🤬
One time I accidentally stepped on a monarch butterfly it was so hurt and that it’s wings cannot be connected back but then a dog came out and ripped its body parts but then another monarch drowned in the water I couldn’t save it because the water is too deep and I couldn’t swim and it’s too far
Most cute beautiful wonderful 😍😍 butterfly 🦋🦋🦋
your not suppose to touch the wings though????
You can touch the wings.
You Can do that
No
Yeah their wings are very fragile and break so easily. I bet this butterflies wing wasn’t already broken. He probably broke it
It's okay to touch the wings. Many people think that if they lose a single scale they will die, when in reality, they lose hundreds of scales during the process of hatching from their chrysalis, and each time they flap their wings, scales also come off. The wings can crack and break from bird attacks, and other Predator attacks. Also if the butterfly ran into a sharp object like a bush, that could do so crack wings. If a butterfly manages to escape from a spiderweb, it possibly could have broken wings. the wings were already broken before the butterfly was caught
I wish it was that eazy
its not good to catch butterfly they get hurt
It's okay. Many people think if they lose a single scale they will die, but they already lose a lot of scales while emerging from their chrysalis, and the wings usually become broken over a period of time. A lot of butterflies managed to escape attacks from birds and other predators, but the birds are left with little pieces of the butterfly's wings and their mouth.
Name Swallowtail Butterfly
Tiger Swallowtail. It said that in the video.

Butterflies are the real deal. Keep catching them. It's fun for you, perhaps less fun for them, but oh well! Creatures be creatures. Humans rule over them.

It is okay to touch the wings, they were already broken. When butterflies survive Predator attacks, they often get out with broken wings. They lose a lot of scales in the process of emerging from their chrysalis, and every time they flap their wings, they lose a lot of scales.🙂
I gently pinch both wings together, then I put one finger under the butterfly so it can hold on and my thumb on top so I can see it's wings.
