  • Hey folks so in this video we are going to take a rack and pinion out of a GM vehicle that came equipped with The legendary 3.8 V6 in it this procedure should be the same on Buick Oldsmobile and Pontiac models that have the 3.8 and quite possibly many other front wheel drive general motors vehicles.
This is a how to video on how to remove or this is the video on how to install the rack and pinion, To save time I only wrote one description for the installation video and the removal video please don’t think too bad of me LOL this is a lot a lot of work!!! And even though I know not too many people are going to be working on these automobiles any longer I was doing the work and I felt like my video described it much better than the other videos that I seen on UA-cam so hopefully you will think the same thing as well.
Automobile manufacturers actually only make 4 to 7 different model cars but they may have up to 15 different names and styles for them underneath the sheet metal the vehicles are often identical they do this to continuously make profits and making more of one part is much easier than making fewer of several different parts.

I haven't yet done this but this video has been way more helpful than any of the videos I have watched for replacing the rack and pinion. I've had quite a fit trying to get the old one removed. Thank you so much for posting this video!!

Gotta do this and Lower Control Arms too. Any advantage or disadvantage to 1st taking out LCA's then Rack , installing new rack and in the end installing new LCA's? I also got the engine support Bar, so that save me from having to jack down the H frame?

The part you are showing at 13:20 - 14:40, getting the stub shaft onto the intermediate shaft - I am having a very difficult time doing. The stub shaft appears to be aligned and going in, but only the very end of the stub shaft is going in. I followed some of your tips that you showed here, like trying to spread the intermediate shaft end, and trying to use a pry bar to get the intermediate shaft slip yoke to go downwards. Nothing I try seems to work. Do you have any suggestions? This is on an older Buick Century than you are working on - it is the generation before this one. However the steering rack removal / installation appears to be similar.

Get it spread apart better it will slide right in. Is it possible that the knuckle is a little bit different like the three prong knuckle? It might be that your steering wheel is turned to the wrong location if it is or your steering wheel has a different spline set up. Double check to make sure the two pieces aren’t different…. That last one right there might be the reason.

@@sharpcarco I did figure this out. What worked was, I stuck a large screwdriver in the metal slot on the end of the intermediate shaft and worked it back and forth, and ever so slowly, less than a millimeter at a time, worked it onto the stub shaft. I did this from under the hood as opposed to in the wheel well. Every other part of this job I did from below the car. I didn't have a helper, so this was the best way. It took a good while but it finally worked. It's a tight fit between the intermediate shaft and the stub shaft. There's no good way to press or pull down on the intermediate shaft knuckle. You're near the brake lines, so if you pry the wrong way you'll hit the brake lines. At least on the older generation Buick Century than this one.

Take the knuckle completely off take a screwdriver and put it in between the space and then bang the screwdriver inside there, so it opens up the gap

That white clip pops up at the top it’s kind of like a swing door and then you’re able to pull the fuses out

I’m not certain which one you’re talking about but you may be talking about an inner tire rod tool or a crow foot set they look like wrenches but they’re on short little sockets,
Or I suppose it’s possible you’re talking about line wrenches which actually look like wrenches but they cover the 85% of the nut . They’re the only tools I’ve ever used on rack and pinion’s other than that I don’t know of any tools they make
