Your reasons to live in BGC are spot on and the rent for your condo is very reasonable. My idea of retirement does not include living in the province just because other people "think" it's cheaper, IT IS NOT when you factor in convenience/ life style. Best of luck with your move.

Exactly, I'm like our host, I would find living in the jungle an absolute horror. I won't live anywhere in the Philippines except in a high-rise upper floor condo or apartment.
I really like his place, too bad for me that I'm still months away from moving. But that rent is so low I should snap it up as a "second home" and feel like a big shot.

I spent 6 months in Baguio. Had a nice studio apartment right by city bus/ Jeepney terminal. GREAT weather and didn’t need AC and rarely even a fan. Everything was walkable because of the terrific and very inexpensive transportation system everywhere there. Great food across street with many nice restaurants close and a really beautiful city. Kind of in between province life and BGC life. My ENTIRE monthly cost including nice food (always ate out) transportation, utilities etc was less than your rent. I’ll be back in BGC and Tagaytay for awhile next month. There are so many options in the Philippines….

I just paid $500k for a 2 bedroom, 5th floor ( current rescue trucks/ equipment cannot save you above 5th floor) at Mandani Bay, Mandaue, Cebu City. The trick to living in the Phillywilly is to SNOWBIRD. I have multiple residences in Florida to take advantage of the hunting/fishing seasons there. I cannot grasp why people would sell everything they have and move here permanently. When the negatives of the Philippines ( too many to list) get to me, I go back home and decompress. When I start missing the beautiful morenas here, I come back to my condo in Cebu.

BKK / Thailand: Alternating with Da Nang (and potentially with another destination such as Penang / Malaysia) to beat the enforcement of the tax regulations (monthly state pension funds wired to a bank account in Thailand are now subject to tax if you stay more than 180 days in the country - tbc with a tax lawyer to get the very latest update).
