  • COMING TO YOUR HOME FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON. Celebrate with us as we present a special holiday concert, livestreamed from the Ordway Concert Hall. Enjoy an evening featuring selections by Richard Rodgers, Irving Berlin, Joni Mitchell, Jeremy Messersmith, Miguel Bernal Jiménez, and more, starring past participants of Minnesota Opera’s Resident Artist and Project Opera training programs.
For our family celebrating Hanukkah, we offer “Light One Candle”, originally written and performed by the group Peter, Paul & Mary. Its lyrics of hope and justice are understandably underscored by a dark and painful history we hope never to repeat, and calls us to remember our devotion to each other even in the darkest of times to come.
Music and lyrics by Peter Yarrow
    Performed by:
    Liv Redpath, soprano
    Zoie Reams, mezzo-soprano
    Daniel Montenegro, tenor
    Thomas Glass, baritone
    Joseph Li, Arranger / Pianist

Strange that a song written in 1982 rings so true.

    Everything about this is awful
    1. I thought the first guy just messed up the lyrics, but when they say justice and peace will prevail I realized they changed the lyrics to be less problematic. So I’m sorry Peter, Paul, and Mary are too problematic for you. “The Terrible sacrifice justice and freedom demand” literally implies its terrible, but that it’s necessary for justice and freedom. It’s a beautiful and powerful lyric, it should not have been changed. Adding peace to “justice will somehow prevail” is not what they intended to relay. You’ve changed the meaning completely. How is justice and peace a burden? Awful change.
    2. This is a song about Jewish suffering, and the hope that God will provide us with our justice and freedom. It’s not about anyone else. Not only was this not reflected in this performance, it’s almost mocking it. Clapping and smiling during “Don’t let the light go out” seriously????
    3. The social distancing also looks stupid. They did virtually nothing with the blocking besides clapping and smiling like complete morons during the creedal cry to not let the menorah light go out.
