The new banknotes look great, but now there's gonna be even more cash micro-managing... I had my own share of this with some JR ticket machines not accepting the new 500 yen coin (which was issued in November 2021 according to BOJ website) and I was there late 2023/2024.

Small businesses do not want to incur the cost of ticket machines.
Japan may also be going cashless.
