I love how he shares real and thorough answers to questions, rather than a sort of 'press version' that is short and to the point. Sooo interesting to hear his process.

Absolutely love him pulling back the curtains and bearing it all here. Aaron is the real deal.

Though I am not a musician, I probably share neurologic similarities with many. So I appreciate Aaron acknowledging that musicians can be seriously hurt by ruthless reviews. I've always been aware that the people who produce art, and the people who review it, are serving fundamentally different roles, even though their roles intersect. The former creates something to engage with emotionally, and the latter creates something to engage with intellectually. This sometimes creates a discordance of purpose.
At this point in my life, I've come to the conclusion that the best role of any reviewer, professional or otherwise, is to offer their thoughts on the music, allowing for their own tastes. The more learned critics can offer insights into the nuts and bolts of the music; chord progressions, influences, and so forth. But IMO, there really is no good reason for anyone to offer a devastating review, because music is inherently subjective.
The extent to which the major labels have historically pressed artists to make their work "more commercial" is well known and wildly criticized. That influence has waned considerably. These days, I think I can argue that a greater pressure to conform is being placed on musicians by internet pundits who think if an artist makes music which is not to their taste, it is objectively bad. Changes in style will gain some listeners and lose others -- I've seen artists I follow go in a direction that doesn't resonate with me, and it can feel like a bummer, but that's my taste. But I've also lost interest in artists because it felt to me like they kept making the same album over and over. One way or another, I'd rather see musicians feel free to try stuff out, and work with whoever they please, than to have to worry about kowtowing to either labels or pundits.

Aaron reminds me how I felt when I was 16 and I remember I also found hope through making music

I think some people who preordered physical copies have already received them but the album isn't actually out until Friday, might want to tweak the intro read although it'll be correct in a few days so who cares I guess. Love the podcast!

I don't like either of the last two The National albums. I get the feeling they are done and no one really wants to admit it. The National, who I've adored for 18 years, are starting to become Coldplay. The music is so soft with Bryan's drums so far buried in the mix. Aaron seems more interested in Taylor Swift than the National. It was a good run while it lasted.
