With over 3.7 million miles under its belt, the American road network is currently the most extensive in the world. One figure gives an idea of its immensity: 14% of the world's roads are in the USA. This vast network includes the world's widest highway, the Katy Freeway. Located near Houston, Texas, it has 26 traffic lanes.
The East Los Angeles freeway interchange is also a good example of the density of traffic in the USA. Only 3 miles from downtown, it is recognized as the busiest freeway interchange in the world.
And yet, although this immense network of freeways seems to be working well, it is now threatened by major financial issues and that's what we will see in this new episode of Looking 4.

"Why America;s Highways are Dying" = intriguing title, but completely ignored in the apparently 100% pro highway and urban sprawl message.

Yeah ending with "it is beautiful and well maintained," almost seems like the opposite message we got in the beginning, and also opposite to anyones lived experience with our highway system.

Imagine if this money was put into passenger rail instead!

indeed! the lack of balance due to the dominance of the car and how expensive it makes life. and so much more: cars and smartphones equal more anti-social behaviour. I am often saddened by what I feel traversing my city. The lack of normal human socialbility is always present and causes all kinds of problems.

This we need a world class passenger rail system. Something that makes Japan and Switzerland look up to US.

Exactly. There needs to be a push for high speed trains that will take you all over the country I promise you if there was more push for Clean buses and trains that run great people wouldn’t mind getting rid of their cars.

The positive conclusion of this video contradicts the headline. I learned that federal interstate road taxes are not keeping up with the cost to maintain, and the obvious solution is for congress to increase the tax rate. Good photos, but the message was clunky.

The maintenance issue is related to the federal gas tax not being raised for a long time. Some states are adding a road tax for electric cars, because the additional weight contributes to road damage.

I've been back and forth across this country many times, there isn't a section of highway the Toyota Land Cruiser can't handle :)

little funfact: the interstate system was inspired by the German Autobahn. The Autobahn system apperantly even helped the Allies defeat Germany in WW2

If the state and federal government hadn't spent the tax revenue on other things instead of maintenance and rebuilding we would not have as big a problem as we have now

  • @GainingDespair
    @GainingDespair Місяць тому

See the problem isn't with the roads, it's with the repairs.
Why do the right job, when you could send 2 folks with a shovel and repair the fix for the next 30 years? I can't be the only one to see bad roads, than them to repair it, only for it to very quickly end up in a worse condition than it started in.

This is the point I stopped watching: 0:54 "... when the United States began to build Interstate highways shortly after the end of the first world war." If you can't even get the basic facts right, how are viewers supposed to believe anything else you say?

  • @bobsingh7949

I remember coming back from spending 6 months in the English and Welsh countryside to a North American city and I was shocked by the road networks and traffic. It just seemed weird, strange, and lonely and not all a world that would last. This impression was a purely intuitive reaction.
I think what shocked me and worried me was that the landscape was dominated by one system of getting around and the infrastructure needed to support it. And you can observe the dominant infrastructure in the way people treat each other and behave; they lack the ability to be still and present. They are always somewhere else.....

So the title says highways are dying but the video actually concludes that it's "going strong". Absolute trash click bait content

bland script worthy of AI, without knowledgeably addressing the hard topics or even its own video title. Typically inoffensive tv dinner resembling hotel artwork. Waste of time.
