The shader pen tip is the workhorse of pyrography. 90% or more of every pyrography project I've created uses a shader pen tip. I have 4 main burn methods that I use: circular motion, uniform strokes, pull-away strokes, and zigzags. Those names are mentioned on a regular basis in my tutorials. This video will not only explains those terms, but also show how they are created. In addition I will cover ways to alter the darkness levels of your burning without adjusting the heat. This is covered in the chapter called control darkness.
I have been doing pyrography for three years, and only just discovered your tutorials. They are the best I have ever seen! I'm basically self-taught, and you have resolved many of the difficulties I have encountered, primarily burning realistic animal fur and scenic backgrounds. Your explanations and demonstrations are very clear and easy to follow, and I'm eager to watch all the tutorials you offer. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful talent!
Thank you for the awesome comment! I'm glad that my videos are helpful. Scenic backgrounds is something I need to work on. I generally avoid it and just zoom in on the animal instead. I hope that you are enjoying Pyrography. I have to tell you that you've chosen a wonderful hobby! Granted I might be a little biased. :) Thank you again for the wonderful comment! Brenda
Hi Gerald, wow. That is very high praise. Thank you. Pyrography is a lot of fun and I'm enjoying myself. It keeps me busy and I feel productive. Plus I continue to learn more about the artform, so I can't complain about that! :) Thanks again for the wonderful comment!
Your instructions are always really good Brenda. Many people state their video is a tutorial when in fact they have little to no instructions. Yours is an example of how to do them right.
Hi Carol. thank you for the wonderful comment! I hope that you will like your Colwood and that it will provide many years of trouble-free burning like mine has.
Hi Wanda, Welcome to the exciting artform called pyrography! I hope you will love it as much as I do. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave a nice comment!
Just started pyrography (to try and use it in combination with wood turning) and have discovered your UA-cam channel. Very, very useful. Great explanations and your work is tremendous.
You are a blessing to me. I'm learning how... I'm off to a good start but your Videos are Done in a way that I can understand it, which is so appreciated!!
....you are VERY good at this.... I need to get a good setup to get started into this.... I like to think i wasnt horrible when i was just using an old soldering iron...... But this.... This is a WHOLE other world then where i ever thought was possible for me.... I must reach this level of skill these examples are pure raw and amazing!!! Keep up the great work!!!
Hi, thank you. I tried a soldering iron once and absolutely hated it. It didn't have a temperature control on it, so that was a large reason for my dislike. Pyrography is a fun artform and I hope you will enjoy it a lot!
@@PyrographyMadeEasy yes i agree it is very featureless and lack of control i just would wave it to kinda help with temperatures.... But this is the budget option that i already had to get started but will be saving for a nice actual unit... Just not sure what one haha. Thank you for the response and great content!
You do not need a fancy burner to get amazing results, but I do think a temperature control is a must. Minisa Pyrography uses a craft burner and she creates fantastic work. Craft burners with a temperature control are a LOT cheaper than the wire tip type of burner like I use. Wire tips are just more convenient as they are easier to switch out tips and the warm up / cool down time is considerably less.
I have been subscribed to your channel for about a year and it’s wonderful, but I never watch the tutorial on different strokes before. That is amazing it’s going to help me so much. Thank you thank you Brenda.

Really loved the video. Thank you for sharing. Richy.
Hi Richy, thank you very much for the compliments. You do awesome work with spoon shaders, so I wouldn't think that you'd need to waste your time with another pen tip. Heck, you're the reason I bought a spoon shader, but I couldn't tell where I was burning so quit using it.

I’m so glad I found your tutorial I haven’t done pyrography for a very long time but still have my original pen, over 35 years old. I’m going to take it up again. I’m a Botanical and wildlife artist...in watercolour, now inspired again to do this. I wondered if you thought my pyrograph pen would be ok, I only have two nibs which are just bent wire in a loop. Should I go for something more up to date and if so how have they changed please?
Hi Linda, Wow. Watercolors are not an easy medium to work in. At least I don't think they are. I say try your pen. What's the worst that will happen? It doesn't work. I watch a number of different pyrography artists out there and it seems like every one of them uses a different type of pen. About the only thing I think is really important to have is a temperature control on the unit. I've watched artist like Minisa Pyrography create amazing art using a "craft" style burner than has the solid metal tips. She has a temperature control version, so she can get a wider range of colors. The craft style burners are fairly inexpensive to purchase especially compared to what I'm using; or any of the big brands out there like Razor tip, Optima, etc. I don't know if I really answered your question. If you do decide you need to upgrade or want information on different types of burners, I'd highly recommend checking out Valarie Connell's channel - Drawing with fire - as she has done a burner review on almost every brand of burner ever made. Brenda I am very glad that you were nice enough to post your tutorials on UA-cam for dummies like me to learn. Thank you so much., I just purchased an Optima ! machine but haven't used it yet. Have you used other machines or just the Colewood? If you have some info on the optima1 I'd appreciate it. also, do you prefer the rigid tips or replaceable ones? Thank you . Ken Mazikowski
Hi Ken, Congratulations on purchasing a burner, but tsk, tsk for not using it yet! :) I have only used a Colwood. My friend and fellow pyrographer, Val (Burning with Fire), uses an Optima and has done several burner reviews. Quite truthfully, I don't think the type of burner matters. Minisa Pyrography uses a Walnut Hollow craft/soldering iron burner and creates amazing artwork with it. Instead, it is just a matter using your burner and getting familiar with it. I'd recommend picking some simple design that interests you and start burning. As for rigid (fixed tip) vs replaceable I don't have much experience with the fixed tip. I've heard that the fixed tip is suppose to produce a more consistent temp output, but I haven't experienced any problems like that with the replaceable ones. I did buy a fixed tip pen set, but other than trying it out for a few minutes and deciding I couldn't tell a difference, I haven't played with it since. Mostly because it doesn't fit in my pen tip holder that I keep my by burner. Hopefully my ramblings helped with your questions. Let me take a moment to welcome you to the exciting artform of pyrography! I really hope that you will love it. Brenda
Hi Sharon, thank you very much. I was a little difficult when I created this one as I had to sit down and really think about what I'm doing. I hope I was able to provide useful information. Brenda
Hi Bob, the shader I'm using in this video is not very wide. It's only 1/8 inch wide by 1/4 inch long (0.31 x 0.63 cm). One option / idea is to modify an existing pen tip. For example if you have a writer pen tip maybe the end and be hammered to a thin disk that resembles what I use.
Hi Kriti, I buy my pen tips from Colwood directly: woodburning.com/ There are several online retail stores that sell Colwood too, but I don't have any experience with them to be able to tell you if one is better than the other. Hope the link helps. Brenda
I'm using Colwood Super Pro II machine. The pen is the J shader by Colwood. Both the machine and pen tip can be purchased directly from Colwood at woodburning.com
Gracias. I use a Colwood Super Pro II. It can be bought on Colwood's website: woodburning.com)

Hi Barbara, Welcome to the wonderful artform called pyrography! I hope that you'll love it as much as I do. Depending on the type of burner you own, the manufacturer may not make one. I make my own. I have a video the goes over this. Here's a link to the video: ua-cam.com/video/rZQkTHobQPk/v-deo.html The video is broken up into chapters, so it will be easy to find the chapter on bending tips.
Hi Annie, It is probably a combine of too high of heat and too much pressure. I'm leaning more towards high heat. The higher the heat is the easier it is for the pen tip to sink down into the wood. As for hand pressure, try your best to use a super light hand pressure. The goal is to allow the pen to gently touch the surface of the wood and glide over it. The heat will stay more consistent and you'll get better burn results that way. So try turning down the heat and reducing your hand pressure.
I hope it helps. It seems like when you first start pyrography there are so many things to be aware of that it's almost overwhelming. The tendency to use a high heat and firm pressure to "get the job done quickly" is something I think everyone has done. :)
Some concepts or techniques are easier than others to do. With experience some things, like using a light hand pressure, become second nature and you're able to concentrate on the next thing. At least that's how it was for me. Keep at it and I know you'll get there!

A las hobras
Gracias por el comentario. Aplico laca a mis proyectos terminados.
Grazie Brenda, moto utile.
Hi Brenda, I cannot seem to find the same wide shader pen tip that you are using. All we have here (Aust) are narrow tips. Any clues?
Hi Bob,
the shader I'm using in this video is not very wide. It's only 1/8 inch wide by 1/4 inch long (0.31 x 0.63 cm).
One option / idea is to modify an existing pen tip. For example if you have a writer pen tip maybe the end and be hammered to a thin disk that resembles what I use.
@@PyrographyMadeEasy thanks heaps Brenda, will investigate. Cheers
Very beautiful 👍👍👍👍
Thank you
Thank you
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for the comment
Hi.can you please share the onlinelink from where we can buy the woodeburning tool and it’s pintips.
Hi Kriti,
I buy my pen tips from Colwood directly:
woodburning.com/
There are several online retail stores that sell Colwood too, but I don't have any experience with them to be able to tell you if one is better than the other. Hope the link helps.
Brenda
Please tell me, kind of the tip pen wood burning? Where I can buy its?
I'm using Colwood Super Pro II machine. The pen is the J shader by Colwood.
Both the machine and pen tip can be purchased directly from Colwood at woodburning.com
What is the process to prep the hat before burning it. Anything special? Thank you
Here's a video about what I do: ua-cam.com/video/kacA8vvyb_U/v-deo.html
(Thank you. I use a Colwood Super Pro II. It can be bought on Colwood's website: woodburning.com)
Is shading used on a medium or high heat?
The heat setting depends on what I'm doing. Most of the time I use low to medium heat.
High heat I only use if I'm doing a large dark background.
@@PyrographyMadeEasy just found your videos, very informative and helpful.
Glad they are helpful
Super grazie ☺️👍
Ciao Franco,
grazie per il bel commento.
Brenda que tipo de madera utilizas
Hola Carlos,

I am new to Pyrography and can’t find an angled shader nib
Hi Barbara,
Welcome to the wonderful artform called pyrography! I hope that you'll love it as much as I do.
Depending on the type of burner you own, the manufacturer may not make one.
I make my own. I have a video the goes over this. Here's a link to the video: ua-cam.com/video/rZQkTHobQPk/v-deo.html
The video is broken up into chapters, so it will be easy to find the chapter on bending tips.
please, Where Am I buy?
Colwood sells direct. Here's their website:
woodburning.com
Where l bay this things everything completely.
Check with Colwood directly at woodburning.com
I tried this and left marks(dents) on my wood. Am I pressing too hard?
Hi Annie,
It is probably a combine of too high of heat and too much pressure.
Oh thank you so much! I appreciate it so much!!!!
I hope it helps. It seems like when you first start pyrography there are so many things to be aware of that it's almost overwhelming. The tendency to use a high heat and firm pressure to "get the job done quickly" is something I think everyone has done. :)
It helps a lot! I've watched your videos, but I seem to have problems applying it. I think some come out better than others.
Some concepts or techniques are easier than others to do. With experience some things, like using a light hand pressure, become second nature and you're able to concentrate on the next thing. At least that's how it was for me. Keep at it and I know you'll get there!
