I too have a Twintop and acquired a 5 door Astra H wing mirror only to find out they don't swap out. In my case, I just needed the plastic main body (which is interchangeable). You do have to dismantle the assembly so far as removing the circular retaining clip (which is difficult to remove) and will 99% likely split so is useless when reassembling. The retaining clip is what keeps the spring compressed (which is what keeps the moveable part of the assembly "fixed with downward pressure" onto the base plate. Without specialist equipment, re-compressing the spring is incredibly difficult. My solution was to use a pop rivet inserted between the spring and the spindle of the main body and hammered it into place which created enough pressure to retain the spring's compression.
At the part where you need to trim "tooth", did you tried to pull out that metal part from plastic? Factory somehow pull it in without breaking anything, so you can pull it out without any damage? A have GTC (Opel edition of 3 door Astra h, idk how it calls at Vaux), plan to do that to my car but power folding mirrors are so rare to any type of Astra, specially to 3 doors...
I do understand your idea, but what good will do that? The aluminium part of 5 door Astra has different mounting points from the Twintop. Thats due to door design :(
