  • In this series I take a look at a PowerJack Inverter that I recently acquired and see if it is really as bad as I've heard. They are inexpensive to purchase, but are they worth what they cost?

    I love that your videos are super informative and you are able to present it in a very engaging and comical way. I almost kicked over laughing in this one.
    I was wondering if you could do a vid where you take an average inverter and upgrade it in an attempt to get better performance out of it? Would be interesting to see what can be done.
    Also, i would also like to see a video about inverter safety, not only daily use but when working internally as well.
    Just some ideas.
    Thanks for publishing :)
    You are one of the best out there

    I have an 8000 watt Power Jack ($329), I think the makers are watching the internet and modifying it as they learn more. Mine has a very hefty toroid coil., they also print the picture of the inside in the manual, encouraging replacement of boards. That's actually kind of cool, since I have blown through $300 inverters that didn't handle my deep well submersible pump (my main concern-1800 watt startup-1300 watt running- kill-a-watt tested), I saw a review on the 8000 watt by an Australian and his had two very hefty toroid coils about 6" across. He showed how to add an inductor coil to reduce it own wattage.. I was prepared to add one but when I opened up mine, the new changes were they had added an inductor coil in the same place the Australian man had shown. So that is why I think they are learning as they go and humble enough to make changes as they see how others improve on their stuff. The other main reason I had to get a true sine (but am out of work and surviving on one paycheck with Hubby) was I figured out the modified sines were killing my refrigerators. I now have several dead refrigerators I am repurposing (solar cooker, water trough, garden storage, barn storage).
    The Australian guy on the forum found the 8000 watt he had was able to handle the load, so his was the only review I could find at the time, and I went with it. Honestly, I don't think I will be using more than 3000 watts at a time myself so, maybe no worries for me. If I have my pump running at 1300 watts and a washing machine running 300-600 watts and a non electric dryer running at 300 watts I can be pretty happy.

    I'm building a stand alone solar project for my AC hanger. I really wish you would/could review the later version of the Power Jack 24 vdc to 110 5000 W Pure sine wave inverter the one with the metering panel on the top of the case. From what I can see the construction is totally different from the earlier models, I purchased a used one for cheep with a bad out put plug (the one you hate, I agree it's junk) I do not expect it to live up to it';s rated capacity, however I would love to here what you have to say about it. I just bought a 6000W LF Split Phase Inverter and found that the Charger function is not turning on when connecting a 230V AC 50Hz input to the H line terminal block.The 24 VDC input is also connected while AC input is given. ( Battery voltage is 24.5VDC)
    When I contacted the seller (ebay) and the reply is to use 60Hz input AC for Charger mode to turn on
    As most of the countires are 230VAC 50 HZ, I am not sure if the input has to be really 60Hz .
    Can you advise as what could be the real problem. ?

    .. i have this question about the Inverter Capacity...let say its a 5000w inverter basically i would power up anything below 5000w better if it was a pure sine...but does this mean i need to calculate the input dc voltage also so to not exceed the 5000w capacity connected in parallel..? W=VxA or W/V=Ah... 5000w/12v=416.66666 Ah....is this correct..? ..or can i add more than 4pcs of 12v 100ah battery in parallel..?

    Are you still around? I have a 5000/20000 peak UPS/ATS modal like that. can i "jack" up the voltage somehow, from 110 vac to 120 vac - 120.5 vac . LED lights flicker when the laptop charger is also plugged in. Using a "kill a watt" tester, I see the inverter is a steady 110 vac at 60HZ, with or without the laptop charger plugged in. But my home power shows 123 to 125 vac at 60HZ with no flicker and a littler brighter LED light bulbs.

    I bought a Power Jack inverter some years ago. I killed it, twice. My fault though. Two things that I particularly liked is that it used proper heatsinks rather than using the case as a heatsink. Dead giveaway is screw heads along the sides.
    It is also quite modular, with decent connections between different boards. 2 small (4 MosFets on each) boards for primary conversion, 2 boards for output power switching. All 4 are identical.

      I can't say I much like these HF powerjack inverters, but their newer LF ones aren't entirely terrible. I own a couple and have used them with success. Glad your inverter worked out for you reasonably well. A low price point can cover for some of the sins.

    I was curious if you have ever heard of In Rush Current Limiters. I have seen a review on Amazon for an Inverter that someone was having trouble running their Microwave in an RV. Someone recommended an Ameritron ICP-20. They said it worked for them. I was curious if this same premise would work for trying to start an Air Conditioner. I have an 8000BTU through wall AC unit on my shed. I cannot get it to run off Mod Sine or True sine wave at 1500 Watt. I tried to procure a 2500 Watt Pure SW but it has issues. It is not a big shed and I did insulate it. I would hate to have to replace a working AC just to get better efficiency but that is looking like a real possibility.

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  3 роки тому +1

      Inrush limiters won't help start an AC unit. Your best bet for your dollar is a larger or more capable inverter, heavier cables, or better batteries. And by more capable I don't mean higher advertised wattage but a better unit. The samlex/cotek SK units for example will easily start that unit. You could also invest in a product like Easystart which work though they cost quite a bit.

    • @mreevimusq
      @mreevimusq 3 роки тому

      knurlgnar24 i am torn between buying an AC unit that is designed to run off of an inverter or generator. They cost a little bit less than an Samlex or cotek inverter. I run 2 12hx505-Fr batteries and a 40a Renogy MPPT Solar Charger. I plan to add 2 more batteries. I have 600 watts of solar panels. It is a good start unfortunately the solar power was an afterthought and my AC was not picked out with solar in mind. What are your thoughts on the reliable inverters. WZRELB ones on Amazon and elsewhere.

    9:45 The seal is often not removed on purpose, to make it a little more quiet and less annoying, which I honestly appreciate.
    I'm not saying the build quality is good or anything. And in my experiences cheap Chinese pure sine wave inverters tend to beep randomly a lot and I end up removing the piezo beeper all together. But you know, at least they try to compensate by not removing the seal.

I would pay someone a small some of money to get it going. I am not finding anyone locally. I am not sure if you have ever repaired one of these for someone. Let me know. Enjoyed the video have watched several.

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  3 роки тому +1

      Repairing these is a hobby and not profitable unless you have special access to sellers or buyers. As you know I used them for UA-cam videos for a time but your best bet might be to sell it for repair on eBay. As a repairer I don't see any good deals on repairable inverters anymore so it's a seller's market.

      I found a troubleshooting video on a very similar model. I think I have a bad mosfet on the AC side. I may try to fix it. I have another Question. I also picked up accurate tools that works well but is a 220v I assume you can’t easily convert to 110v? That would be nice but I won’t get my hopes up. I have a centech also that is Mod Sine Wave but it appears doa. I got all three reasonable but only the accurate tools seems operational.

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  4 роки тому

      I haven't actually used any of the newer ones but I do think they are better than they used to be. I'd curb my expectations but give them a shot again. After all the average quality of inverters has fallen so far over the last decade that even these old Aims inverters are better than the new PowerJacks and most other inexpensive Chinese inverters. Sadly, even Cotek and Samlex no longer make all that great of stuff as they have significantly cheapened their products to compete. If you can find one of their older SK designs snap it up! They are much better than the new style.

    The DC/DC board looks like it might have been originally designed for a big car audio amplifier. They typically use split rails. The transformers are small for the wattage since they only have to handle the wattage at a rather low duty cycle. Definitely not the same as 5kW general purpose duty.

    Btw. So far it is nice review. But what i would like to see is Power jack 5000W LF. as low frequency. These high freq. inv will not be able give any surge power. BUt those LF could..So if you can please buy some of those LF inverters and test them. Many ppl are thinking about them. Even power jack is advertising are better option than HF version. Thanks

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  9 років тому +2

      LF designs are not inherently better at providing surge power as commonly believed. Unfortunately these cheap HF designs give other good HF designs a bad name. LF is an inferior inverter topology that I personally wish would just go away, but unfortunately it is easier to make a 'good' inverter with a LF design without doing any real engineering work so they continue to exist.

    • @alelectricll
      @alelectricll 9 років тому

      ***** hf and lf all need good engineering. They are mostly common at providing surge power because there is no semiconductors on the output. Sometimes they harder construct with excellent efficiency.

    Capacitors in series divides the voltage by the number of caps in series(or rather, multiplies the voltage rating by the number of them in series). Meaning 120v x 2 in series would be equivalent to one capacitor rated to 240v.

      +DMAN22yeah Why they should use 400V capacitor for 110V RMS inverter, when they will never see more than 160V on them?
      Performance with higher voltage capacitors will be worse, higher voltage = higher ESR, which will give worse performance, shorter life span of capacitors ....

      I would like to hear your explanation how voltage of capacitors influence quality of sine wave of inverter (I never heard that statement , but maybe something is changed from 20 years ago when I designed my last inverter) especially for capacitors that see only DC current (that capacitors are part of DC/DC step-up converter).

    I am having issues with my unit. Never worked and will not even power a 5 watt LED desk lamp without an alarm. How could I even run a house, or fridge. it was to have a warranty, but evidently they do not support what they say. this never worked without an alarm going off. show me the video on how to stop the alarm. David from PowerJack has ignored me. sent many videos but he fails to provide a solution. DAVID, SEND ME A WORKING UNIT!!!!! Maybe you can't remember me form the thousands of other complaining people.

      ***** Your problems with the Power Jack Inverter have only just begun. Read this blog by Ludens: ludens.cl/Electron/chinverter/chinverter.html. He did a massive amount of re-engineering to prevent electrocution issues, RF interference issues and DC regulation issues. I am very surprised that your Power Jack actually works as well as it does or even works at all.

      ***** Hi Knurlgnar, I love your videos! I am looking at Surveillance Vans and how they manage to run a 8000 BTU Air Conditioner (880 W, 115V, 8.0 A) on batteries for X hours while on pure battery power (no solar & no generator). In Surveillance Van build documents, they recommend 2 x 8D AGM batteries (each has about 200 Ah) and a 2 KW inverter. An RV or Van should be able to carry these batteries (160 lbs ea). But, I am really not sure just how long this sort of Air Conditioner system would run. I carefully watched your wonderful videos but you did not really show "how long" your big 1400 bank would run stuff. Please help me with a battery needs calculation. With AC, I guess you also have to take into consideration a thermostat and what if it is running about 50% of the time (cooler day) to maintain 72 degrees but I guess we also need to calculate 100% run time too (for a very hot day). Not sure. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much! - Aprille
