    In this video I talk about the Rutlands Vacuum Clamps that are currently available for £69.95 GBP and the time saving advantages they have for me as a person who only works with one arm. It is very much a budget alternative to the Festool Vacuum Clamping System, but is it any good?

    Thanks Leo. This is the second time your videos have literally been a revelation for me. 1st one was with the router templates from @chopsdesigns having spent an absolute fortune on templates from the US and now these clamps. Had to sand new coasters last night and it was a bloody nightmare. This will be a game changer. Thanks and keep up the good work. You're an inspiration.

    hahaha.. Leo, you made my day with the bonus bit at the end. With reference to the clamps - what a game changer! Your enthusiasm is contagious. Can you plug both in at the same time? If so, you could use the system for longer pieces too. It might also help with drawing a straight cutting line, by holding the workpiece in place. What a find! Thanks for the videos.

    • @Hand-i-Craft
      @Hand-i-Craft  4 роки тому

      Cheers Mandy, less said about the hair the better😂. You can connect the clamps together no problem for longer pieces. My tiny compressor struggles a bit with it tbh, but that will be rectified when I finally get the workshop built. As you say though, they are an absolute game changer for me!

    These look a great addition to the workshop. I'm new to the channel having come over from 10 minute workshop following the one handed challenge. You've probably already seen but the Armor "Tool Auto-Adjust In-Line Dog Clamp" from wood workers workshop also look useful especially if your going down the MFT route. Can I also say how I find what you are doing is amazing and also inspirational as I'm also disabled and would love to get back into woodworking at some point and I'm finding your videos a real boost that one day it'll be a reality. Hi Leo, these are life changing for you and potentially many more people in many walks of life. Well done for bringing this to everyone.

      @Hand-i-Craft  4 роки тому

      Cheers Denis. Yeah I don’t want to end up overusing the term ‘game changer’ but these do fall in that category. The clamping force is excellent, but by far the biggest benefit is the time saving aspect. It just eliminates that stop / start approach to me previously working having to continually adjust clamps. Will see how it goes with them, but can see me using them in virtually every project! 😀 Take care, Leo 😀

    Nice review and an affordable alternative to the Vac-Sys. Did you look at adding a foot pedal for quick on/off? You could tee the foot pedal into the vacuum line and pipe it up to the normally closed port on the foot pedal. Then when you step on the pedal it opens and releases the vacuum without having to turn the pump off or manually close a valve. Once the work is removed from the clamp pad you can take your foot off the pedal and you can then reposition your work or change to another workpiece and it is instantly clamped down again.

      @Hand-i-Craft  3 роки тому +1

    Firstly mate I think your hair looks so much better now, it's like a reverse Mohican😂 secondly I actually would really like this because it gets right on my nerves when the workpiece is vibrating all over make a nose and even when I use the black grip stuff it still slips about. Great find Leo, your work flow is becoming so much more efficient, it's going to be great to see what your set up is going to be like in a year or two. 😊

I’ve been in the garage for a lot of today testing them out again and they really are the business. Obviously you’ve got the noise of the compressor but if you’re using a sander / router anyway it makes no difference, plus with some tunes on in the headphones and it’s all good. Very amusing end to your vid Leo :-)
    You are obviously clued up on your technology so I was wondering why you had not elected to go the way of some form of MFT in order to make life easier. CNC Design Wrexham do MFT tops of which I have one and am very happy. In addition they do a very interesting vacuum board which is powered via vacuum cleaner. An MFT board starts at less than £50.00 and they also make templates if you fancy making your own MFT. This wasn't meant to be a plug for CNC design but it seems to have turned into one! Wishing you every success and will continue to follow your progress.

    Festool makes fantastic tools(I have four sanders and the smaller planer and the highest rated vac) but not even as a professional woodworker would/will put 1500€ on a vacume system. Compressor clippers🤔🤔, now there’s a thought 😂. Thanks Rasmo and thanks for the recommendation. I’ve looked at a few UA-cam makers I follow in regards to what compressor they use and they seem to have more complaints about them than compliments. I’ll get by fine with the small Rutlands one I have now, but that is mainly for the brad nail gun, so when / if I get the workshop built, I’ll have more space to accommodate a more substantial compressor. I was very busy the last few weeks so only today I watched this video. Very interesting clamping system. Thanks for sharing.
    When I clicked on the link, it showed text in Slovak language. That surprised me very much. (not everything was translated totally correctly)
    They even ship to Slovakia but the shipping costs did not make me very happy. More than 30 pounds.
    Do you remember how much is the weight of the whole package? I guess no more than one and a half kilo. (1500 grams)
    I should study their web-site. Maybe they have other interesting things as well. How is the clamping systems connected to the workbench?
    Are there (between workbench and clamps) those rubber "rings" as well?)

      Thanks Hans. I’ve used Rutlands a lot and have frequently recommended them, although not yet to overseas folk. Apologies I can’t comment on the weight of the clamps as they were part of a larger order, but I could check their individual weight if you’d like me to?
      What I would recommend is signing up to Rutlands email offer service as most of their best selling products are discounted periodically for a short period of time.
      In regards to the clamps themselves, on the underside they don’t vacuum clamp down to a workbench (like the Festool vacuum clamp does). They do have holes on the corners though for them to be applied to a surface by a fixing. To be honest for the price they are retailing at I think it is a sacrifice worth making. The top vacuum clamping is very strong, considering the price again I was so impressed by this. Since making this video I’ve been constantly using them and I am very happy with my purchase up to now😀.
      Take care Hans and thanks for the message, Leo 😀

      Hello William, I’ll keep an eye out for the bench cookies, cheers for that. I actually bought the mini compressor that Rutlands sell. I got it as part of the brad nail gun package when it was on offer. I decided to try a compressor nail gun as my cordless Ferrex one kept jamming so was returned. The other reason I went with this compressor is it’s tiny! It copes fine with the one clamp, but seems to be struggling a bit when both are engaged. It’s only a short term problem though. I didn’t get a large compressor because I simply haven’t got the room in the garage for anything else, but I am building a workshop in the summer so will invest in a larger unit and just have the small compressor for the nail gun. Cheers, Leo 😀

Can only see myself changing that when working on a side table / coffee table top. Very happy with them up to now 😀

Couple of reasons really, it’s tiny and very quiet, plus I decided to buy a nail gun / compressor as my cordless Ferrex nail gun kept jamming so had to be returned. And I just haven’t got the room in the garage for any more ‘stuff’. I’m planning on building a workshop in the summer so will address the larger compressor issue then once it’s completed. I’m the meantime this little one copes fine with one clamp, but struggles a bit with the two connected. It’s not really an issue at the moment as I’ll only be using one at a time, but will probably need something with more capacity in the future😀

    hi Leo! Thank you very much for this video, I was completely unaware of the existance of this little kit. Being quite an ignorant when it comes to vacuum technology and compressors I have a question concerning the loudness of the system: Up to now I have been using a box hooked up to my shopvac to create a vacuum in order to "clamp" stuff. However this is obvisouly pretty loud. I then checked the Festool thingy which, at least in the videos, seems to be still quite annoying ( too annoying for the price point). The same goes for the average vacuum pumps. How is it with the compressor solution? Obvsly the compressor at some point will kick on to refill the airtank. However, how long can you run the system without the compressor turning on (and creating noise)? Also: which compressor are you using?

    • @Hand-i-Craft
      @Hand-i-Craft  2 роки тому +1

      Hello Audioventura, cheers for the message. I understand what you’re saying about the noise. I have the small compressor from Rutlands. I bought it as part of a kit with a brad nail gun. It’s capacity is only around 10lt so it kicks in very quickly but it is very very quiet. What I would suggest is what ear protection are you using in the workshop to help combat the noise? I have a pair of in ear isotunes headphones that are excellent at noise cancellation and also to listen to music / podcasts radio etc 👍👍😀😀

This alone saves me so much time as I don’t have to constantly adjust clamps. I’ll have to disagree with you on this matter unfortunately, I don’t see where the issue is on setting up?

      @@Hand-i-Craft do you need vacum pump or air compressor? If regular air compr is enough the cost is not big whit your system, but i dont get how compressor would do it?

      Goran Jelenić Just a standard air compressor Goran. The clamp has a rubber seal around the top of it and kind of a ‘bleed type’ valve that lets a tiny amount of air out. As you place the piece onto the clamp it forms a tight seal with the rubber which locks the piece onto the clamp. I don’t fully know myself, but I can tell you it locks it on completely solid

    I would like to make a serious objection about your bonus piece. My hair naturally looks like yours did. And you thought this was humorous. It can only be described as follicle discrimination. As every other bloody minority now has legislation forbidding discrimination against it, I would like to start a class action for the significant emotional damage your bonus piece caused me.
    Thankfully, this is intended to be funny. I have been follicly-challenged for many years and do not give a hoot about it.
    My first time viewing any of your videos. I’m certainly going to look at others. I am starting to build a vacuum clamping system and have looked at the US vacpad system. I now need to look at Rutland.

      😂😂😂😂😂😂Thanks Theo for the message and apologies for the late reply. Been very busy workshop build wise and also my real world job. I still use those vacuum clamps regularly and need to get them installed properly into the new workshop. Great piece of kit and doesn’t break the bank to purchase them either 👍👍
