  • Atlas 80v Harbor Freight chainsaw vs Husqvarna 50cc Gas Chainsaw - Felling a 1-foot wide tree with the Atlas 80v Battery Chainsaw. The atlas chainsaw has an 18-inch bar and costs about $360 bucks with one battery and a fast charger. I forgot that I went one model up in the Husqvarna that saw is $399.00 I believe I said $299 in the video. Check out your local chainsaw representatives though because they often have better saws for the same or less money. What are your thoughts on atlas tools?
The saw did stop on me twice during the video. Do you consider this to be a professional saw? I would expect run time at about 30 mins of actual cutting. What are your thoughts on the Atlas Battery Powered 80v Chainsaw?
The other saws in this video
    Husqvarna 450e Rancher - 50.2cc - $399.00 (lowes)
    Stihl 211 - 35.2cc -
    Ryobi - ry3716 - 37cc
    Husqvarna 572xp 70.7 cc - not really a comparison
You can check the saw out for yourself at www.harborfreight.com/80V-Lit... - @Harbor Freight Tools

I've worked in this industry most of my life and have used just about every saw there is and if anybody thinks that the atlass is not cutting it they are living in denial , man what a geat saw , in 10 years you just won't whan't to use an ice saw , believe me , great vid !!!

As a farmer I do not see myself using a chain saw more then a few hours at a time. If the battery goes down plenty of other things to work on while the battery recharges.

All batteries loose there strength as time goes bye.. plus your limited by the weather as with a gas type it’s go time all the time. I’m not familiar with other battery chainsaws but they look pretty flimsy. You’d buy a good gas one for small time use for a couple of hundred bucks. I’m a husky guy true and true so I’m going to be biased anyways. Like I tell everyone that I see using a chainsaw is use proper PPE and take your time!

Well, I just got my Joncutter G5800 set up and tuned today and cut just about two tanks of wood up. It is stock with 3/8" .058 chain on it. It is much faster than either of the two saws shown and I have it running rich right now until it is broken in. Powerhead with bar and chain was ~$125 shipped. At this point, there are excellent chainsaws that have come off of patent and can be purchased at extremely competitive prices. I have a H372XP clone that I got with a couple of chains for less than $250 complete and obviously it runs circles around the saws in this vid as it is a much larger displacement. If you are comfortable tuning and make sure that any clones you purchase have the bugs worked out, they are pretty hard to beat for value.

I bought the HF saw along with the HF mower to make good use of the battery platform. I used it to cut up a large honey locust, a red oak 14" limb, and an 80 year old black cherry. After splitting I had over a cord of wood. I still haven't cut up the main trunk of the locust because I need to sharpen the chain and the main trunk of the cherry I am going to slab as one crotch is 42" wide. The HF Atlas cut through all these hardwoods like butter. I only wish they sold replacement chains at the store. You have to call the oem to get one. Also own a small 14" Ryobi battery saw and an old craftsmen corded electric for basic branch trimming. For me, not messing with the gas/oil factor is huge so I am happy the cordless ones are getting this good. Nice rundown on all the options!

Just picked up a remington 14" gas chainsaw for $125 on amazon and this thing is a beauty. It cuts so dang effortlessly, and I'm not talking about pruning, this thing hauls through 12" logs. I love it.
Edit: It's still running strong as ever. Love this thing.

Great comparison. Yeah, I agree, not a professional saw, wouldn't see this replacing a lumber jack's set up. For a home owner, like that last gasser, it was hard to start. For a homeowner who doesn't use their saw much, two stroke fuel gummies up carbs, is a lot more of a hassel than an electric saw and batteries can stay conditioned running other tools. No oil dripping from exhaust, just the chain lube. I see each saw's different forte's laid out well with this. thanks!

Enjoyed this video, as I've been considering a battery operated chainsaw to fell a few trees like the one you dropped. Was trying to decide whether to invest more in DeWalt cordless tools, but I'm impressed that the Atlas seemed to perform better than I anticipated. Thank you!

Kim, thank you for watching. I hear great things about the 60v dewalts and also the milwaukee m18 saws. I think it will come down to the battery platform that you may or may not already be invested in. I think it also comes down to expectations and the amount of tree work that you have. If you have any questions along the way let me know. Thanks again

Battery saws definitely have the advantage with the occasional user doing pop Johnny jobs. Just leave it behind the seat in your truck and your all ready to go (as long as the battery is charged) but for the serious user who cuts a lot gas is the way to go. The other concern is bar oil you have to check frequently. And btw I have the 562xp they like to pinch a fit sometimes. Lol

Im just a home owner that uses the chain saw two three times a year. The gas ones are a pain in the ass whith the mix fuel hard to start and keep running ,especially in ice storms when it is super cold out. I got a cheep electric one and i was so happy with it i got another bigger one . So great i cant believe it cuts great for me . Even the little one i got cheep i cut up a 30 foot tree that fell in the yard . More than enough for a home owner. The gas one i have is also a cheep one so im not talking about top equipment i only use them occasionally.

Thank you for purchasing it and testing it. Cordless Chainsaws make for happy neighbors, they are quiet. As you stated, great for homeowners and individual who can't pull start a saw. They have their place, but you need to get battery powered equipment that can run other tools. I foresee every house in the future with a battery powered car, and interlocking/changable batteries, that you can use in house hold equipment and lawn equipment. Charge them up via the sun, grab them when you need them, and your car acts as a backup generator for your house.

For most of my woodworking, my Husky 55 comes out. Have had that saw since new, it's killed more than a few trees.
For the really big stuff, I wake up the Homelite C-51 with a 36" bar. 32:1 mix gets a little smoky, but it's pretty sweet when it gets into the cut. Great for special occasions.
Dad has a plug-in electric chainsaw, and for what he needs it for, it works great. I bet though, 50 odd years on, we'll be using lasers to cut trees down or something.

Nice demonstration of the Atlas 80V saw.
    A couple of comments:
    1) You were comparing to a brand new gas chainsaw. Gas chainsaws generally need 4 or 5 tanks of gas run through them before they develop full power. Yet even with this. the Husky 450 "landowner-grade" 50cc gas chainsaw took 25% less time in the cut than the Atlas.
    2) Saw comparisons are generally as much a comparison of the type of chain and how well they have been sharpened as they are a comparison of the saw itself... even with brand new chains.
Still, it was a fairly impressive cut for a battery saw. The saw shutting down in during a series of repeated cuts was likely due to the battery or motor overheating from the high current draw. A safety thing to protect the battery & motor. Maybe not a concern for a typical homeowner, who might have longer pauses between cuts.

Thanks for this indepth review, just saw these at my local HF and was debating picking one up for my 4x4 kit. As others mentioned it would be nice to keep all the tools in the same family battery wise, but it is not essential for me. For real work, I will definately stick with gas Stihls or Huskies. But where I live and also where I venture out to offroad, trails tend to become impassible. A local storm trapped some folks 5 miles or so from the main road with downed trees and such. While I would not try to cut my way out of that sitiation with an electric, I have been looking for something that is heavier duty than a sawzall, but doesn't require me to carry premix. This one seems like it bridges that gap nicely. Thanks again!

As soon as my husky gas saw gives me issues on starting, out she goes. Great video. I'm convinced. Perfect for camping to get firewood and quick cutting around the house. No Brainer for me. I have a husqvarna battery powered and although it is not rated that highly against other brands, it does what I want it for. That is the occasional cut here and there. We had a huge wind in January that blew trees down all over town, I broke out my gas powered husky too cut up the downed trees but found the saw hard to start after sitting for months on the shelf in my shop. I then decided to get the battery powered version which is always easy to start but found that the battery does not work in cold temps - 10 that day. Not sure how other brands fair in the cold but this is definitely a problem.

For homeowners just dealing with smaller fallen trees, dead limbs on trees, firewood, that kinda thing, the electric seems hard to beat. Even if it sat in the garage unused for a year or more, just charge the battery pack and go. Small gas engines are neat, but they're also a pain in the arse--and that goes double when it's sat around a while and the little bit of gas left in the carburetor (there's always some) has had a chance to dry out and plug everything up with goo. There's none of that with the electric motor.

My Husky 536lixp has zero lag between the trigger and the chain. But one thing with all battery saws is that if you load it too much (chain starts to be pinched), they will stop. Reset at the top of the cut at full throttle and you are good to go. Also, I would not buy an Atlas for $250. I'd prefer Dewalt over that. And if someone had m18 batteries already, buying the Milwaukee is a no brainer. Such a powerful saw.

That will be great for guys that do the chainsaw carving. I think if you was not messing around with those short cuts you could of chucked up and limbed the whole tree. That would be great to carry in my mud boat in the spring. On the first trip up the creek. I have to cut downed trees out of the creek every year. I hate carrying the saw, gas, bar oil in the boat. I don’t think it would be good for logging or tree trimmers that work in the woods all day. But great review buddy. Love the key finder..

  • @trapperdad121
    @trapperdad121 4 роки тому +5

I really appreciate all of the comparisons you made. It also helps that you obviously have fell a tree or two. I think that the perceived stopping is due to having the blade touching the tree prior to pulling the trigger. It really messes with the cordless saws. Start it spinning prior to cutting. Also, I think they cut better when I pivot on the bucking spikes and keep constant smooth engagement. I haven't used the atlas, but I've put a lot of time on my 56v egos.

Good video, Nick! I didn't seriously think the Atlas would compare well, but it certainly held its own in this instance. I can see that there's a niche market for electric, for sure. For fun, I picked-up a late 1970's Pioneer P26 (51cc) for $50 a few weeks ago. It still runs quite well, even though it doesn't appear to have been too well maintained. I'd be curious to see how that Atlas is doing in 40+ years 😉. At the end of the day, I think I'd have to stick with my old-school gas just for the smell of the two-stroke! Take care, and stay well! They are for different uses and customers. For the person not planning on using them for hours at a time and don't want to deal with all the extra stuff and hassle of a gas chainsaw. The good quality electrics work great. For the high volume wood cutter and someone who has a little mechanical ability the gas are better. I have the smaller ryobi battery chainsaw that is awesome for throwing in the truck for hunting and camping. I use it for cutting up some firewood and cleaning off the back roads after storm damage. Just throw the chainsaw, a few ounces of bar oil, and a couple charged batteries and it is all I need for that purpose. If I was still cutting cords of wood for my house for winter I would definitely get a gas Stihl or Husky.

Been thinking of keeping an electric saw in the 4x4. Don't have to worry about spilling fuel. Or since I don't need a saw a lot I wouldn't have to worry about bad fuel. One of those tools you never need until you forget it at home. It would have to be one of those things where multiple tools shared the same battery style.

billy ???? I’d like to find a small saw maybe like 12 inch bar and either gas or battery that would be perfect for those situations where you could open up a trail. I just don’t like to have bulky stuff on the machine if you know what I mean. I have a folding saw that has worked for us in a jam.

Pretty much any gas engine saw is like that. Break it in with extra oil, say 20:1 for the first bunch of tanks of gas until the piston rings seat. Then use 30:1 and you can try leaning the high speed needle, squeeze a little extra power out of it.
If you're going to lean it so it 'wails' don't run 50:1 fuel-oil mixture as the manual says, use more than that, like 30:1. The leaner mixture won't deliver enough oil.

Hey Nick, nice job on the video. I’m here from Killinger’s channel, I think we bounced a few comments on his Livestream. Anyway, in the never ending supply of content options, I found yours to be refreshing. I took the time to scroll through your comments and noticed a good rhythm. Most of the comments were respectful, and all of your returns were very courteous. I like honest reviews and I would say you were on task. I am a small engine mechanic/fleet manager for a landscape company. I see a ton of hand-held equipment used and mis-used! The Atlas would not make the grade. I have a carver friend who has the Stihl cordless system... Pricey, but Very effective in his craft. As for all of the suggestions folks have for what to try, I only know what I use. The vast majority of my ‘using saws’ are commercial units. The others are mostly vintage relics (‘60’s-‘70’s Muscle Saws) that run, but weigh far too much to use on a regular basis. The electrics are best suited as you have clearly stated, limited and or indoor use. The Atlas would last the average homeowner who is only doing light storm cleanup on occasion. Keep up the great work👍🏼. I subbed based entirely on our conversation and the content of this video.... Now for your Archives! Blessings!

Man those old saws though......tough as nails. We had a steel cased McCullough growing up (NO IDEA model, size etc) and although it was NOT a limbing saw by ANY means i climbed on up and limbed a huge oak in the front yard with it. Even lifting weights in high school at the time and being pretty solidly built it was a WORK OUT holding that thing at around shoulder level for lengths of time (because my father OBVIOUSLY didn't know how to sharpen chains either, lol). Wish i still had that saw though. I live in the mts in VA and burn wood as a sole source of heat and that old beast once you do fell a tree was one of the best bucking saws i've ever held. It's weight alone would just pull it down through when the chain WAS sharp.

I have six Husqvarna and I cut more than average. Cant beat the gas saw
    BUT:
My Daughter just got a Atlas from her BF. My kiddo runs my Husqvarna s with me so .
    We love the darn thing!
The chain is insane and the torque is there.
    No vibrations
It will cut for a good bit but it is not a wood fire stove production saw for filling the pick up truck
Why is this saw best for home owners? Lack of noise and lack of gas required. It is perfect for all the small stuff or the accumulated odd ball pieces that you dont want to be ripping noise wise in the housing area pissing the neighbors off.
I would think that the battery will be used in other power tools so that will be a plus
I recommend this saw for your once in a while use home owner.
I also would use this as a Pro to reduce noise on the job should there be near by dwellings.

It very good if you use the array of tools in the set. The Atlas series has a bunch of interchangeable tools that use the batteries. My wife works at Harbor Freight so I get good deals on stuff, but I would probably buy the Atlas stuff even if I didn't get them cheaper. I use the mower, the blower, the weed-whacker, and the saw and I would like to add the edger but I dunno cause I can do it well enough with the weed-whacker. I just like buying tools! :P
I like having the saw in this setup because I use the saw maybe once a year, if that, for cutting up some fire wood prior to winter setting in. However, I use the other 3 tools weekly, so I get some really good use out of the battery system. If I just had the saw, and no other parts of the kit, I probably wouldn't bother and would just get a small gas-powered saw.
For the homeowner with very light demands, this tool is exceptional. I think this saw is superb for pretty much any work that can be done on a single battery charge and doesn't need the better, continuous torque from the gas motor. However, for any sort of significant work load, I would not bother. It will get bogged down by heavier demands that the gas-powered saw will plow right through.

I've had bad luck with husqvarna saws but good luck with the echo saws like the cs590. I can't run the gas ones anymore hardly. How is the vibration compared the gas. The electric saws are definitely home owner based not ranch or heavier comercial use yet. Being able refil agas tank in a few minutes vs waiting to charge a battery. One good place for a comercial application would be as a limbing saw if its light enough. Nothing worse than a saw that is being PITA to start when you are 20-30ft in the air

Battery chainsaws are an evolving technology. Give them time and they will catch up but at the moment good only for trimming trees. I wouldn't t rely on one to much to cut a trailer load of heavy wood like I would my Husky or Jonsered petrol saws.

    • @devilsoffspring5519
      @devilsoffspring5519 4 роки тому +2

It's not the saw itself, just the battery. The brushless electric motor, and electronic controller that drives it, are 100% fully-developed technology. They're ultra-lightweight and compact for their power, extremely durable, and surprisingly cheap.
It's the battery pack that's the weak spot. They're now very powerful for their size and weight, but expensive, and offer short run times if you want to do heavy work.
Right now, the only way to get a really long run time out of an electric saw is to have a wearable backpack battery and a cable to carry power to the saw. It would be heavy and pricey, but the electric saw is clean and quiet, and will always 'start' so you can use all your energy for working instead of yanking on the starting cord until you're out of breath :)
