Count me as another one who is happening to love watching these Hammer shoots. He is really engaging and kind; down to earth he seems to me. I'm 35 so the matches I seem to remember watching were with him wrestling lesser talents on the lower card; not the matches he had with Santana over the IC title or the matches with Flair and Piper etc.
I grew up watching the Hammer , now listening to him 35 years later giving us the insight of what was going on in the background is a real treat. Thanks for the fantastic interview
Hope Greg knows how much these videos mean to us fans. 🇺🇸 Greg was great to watch but an even better story teller. I'm thankful to live in a time when I can watch the real stories on youtube.
as a heel announcer jesse was ridiculously over. i remember a summerslam in new jersey 88 or 89 around there.... as soon as it was obvious to everyone that the ppv went live a guy a few rows behind me with a booming voice started chanting jesse! jesse! then i started... so i was number 2 in the whole arena.. at the 5th jesse the entire arena exploded (or popped is the current vernacular) chanting jesse. his reaction to it was priceless.
Very underrated duo. Ventura and McMahon played so well off each other, with McMahon doing the slightly naive, straight shooter, good guy play-by-play routine and Ventura doing the cagey veteran, experienced wrestler, bad guy color man routine. McMahon's exasperation with Ventura was never not funny.
Imagine of raw and SmackDown today had announcers like Ventura and McMahon on one show and Gorilla and Heenan on the other. I will watch the show just for the commentary alone. That would be entertaining enough for me. What I liked about it was they weren’t trying to be “ESPN” like they were trying to be part of the package part of the story and the voice of the spectator. It added another dimension to every match. It’s a lost art now for the most part.
Hell yeah, Bobby Heenan! He was extremely quick-witted. I'll never forget Heenan's remark in WCW when "The Giant" (Paul Wight) choke slammed Lex Luger through a table and Heenan said, "Well maybe Lex Luger and Billy Ray Cyrus can get together and sing about his achy breaky back!"
I could kill HOURS listening to these interviews! When I was a kid, I watched Georgia Championship Wrestling and got to see some of the personalities Hammer talks about. This brings back a lot of memories. Thanks for posting all these interviews. Really great stuff.
I hope guys like Greg realize just how much they meant to kids in the Midwest in the early to mid 80s. Where I lived , it was WWF and NWA (WCW) on TV and I gotta say it was must see TV to a lot of us. I loved all the major pro sports in the 80s . Larry Bird, Mike Schmidt , Pete Johnson - they were posters on my wall. And right there alongside them were JYD , Superstar Billy Graham, Greg the Hammer etc. Those guys were as important to me as any of my heroes in regular sports. They really made my childhood memorable and I love the nostalgic feeling I get from watching them reminisce about those days. To me they're legends
It’s just so good to see someone from the old guard, in a good state of mind telling these stories. Hammer was a huge part of my childhood as a fan, so this was really cool to see.
Jesse is either the best or second best announcer I've heard in my over 60 years of being a wrestling fan and listening to ALL the territory announcers (thanks to UA-cam). The guy who ranks right there with him is Dick Lane an bad-guy actor who called wrestling at Los Angeles' Olympic Auditorium for quite a few years in the 1960's and 1970's. Lane was born in 1899 and had an old-school gangster vibe, just right for wrestling in the kayfabe days. Lane loved every baby face and spoke his mind to the heels. For whatever reason, the old Los Angeles territory gets very little publicity today even though it where vaudeville wrestling really got its start with the appearance of Gorgeous George.
yea vince asked jesse if he wanted to be a heel commentator and the rest is history. Gorilla and Jesse were my favorites followed by JR and Heel lawler.
Great point by Valentine about the appeal of Jesse as an announcer. He was a heel and he was biased toward the heels, but he always made good points. It was like he was the heels' lawyer. You could rarely argue with what he was saying, even if you didn't like what he was saying.
I could listen to Valentine talk wrestling all day! The stories he tells give me insight into the guys that were a huge part of my childhood with him being one of the best (although I hated him as a kid)! :)
I agree Greg "The Hammer" Valentine! I remember a Match where Gorrilla Monsoon made me become a fan of yours because of the announcing and he pointing out how much damage you could take and that it took 45 mins to get you warmed up. I believe it was in a Royal Rumble match where he really pushed and I was hooked then and never looked at Greg the same way again. I looked at him as one tough SOB that given the right match could outlast anyone wrestling at that time!
I remember watching Gorilla Monsoon, BoBo Brazile, Pedro Morales, i've been watching wrestling since I was 8 years old, way back in 1966, thos guys were great. My brother and I sat with Greg Valentine and his mom a few times when Johnny wrestled in San Diego,Cali
The Hammer and Macho man my two very favorite guys in wrestling. As a youngster it was fun to cheer for the " bad guys " they were always up to some kind of trouble. Lol. Now at 60 I watch and ask where have all the years gone. Thanks Hammer for all the great memories.
These Greg Valentine interviews are I think the best shoot interviews I have seen with any wrestlers. The Interviewer never breaks in while Greg is talking abd deserves alot of credit for these interviews he does with Greg. I wish he would put the whole interview with Greg even if its 4 hours. I hope he does another whole 4 hours with him again. Greg has so many years and has so much information its amazing. Pretty much every one before hand (unless it was a heel doing guest commentary) was always for the face wrestlers, the non-rule breakers, the fan favorites. Ventura was hands down the greatest heel announcer of all time. He was great at building up the heel as an announcer, but particularly as an interviewer. If a heel did something dastardly to the face, Ventura would really embellish it as a brilliant idea. Or if the heel had certain attributes like being a tough guy or a powerhouse, Jesse would make them out to be twice the man they really were. And he would sprinkle in just enough compliments to the babyface to keep some credibility. The '87 Survivor Series match when Bundy pulls Hogan from out of the ring causing Hogan to be counted out. Jesse timed it perfectly by saying 'what a smart move by Bundy!' because it was. But it didn't diminish Hogan because Bundy made a cheap, but smart move that anybody could have fell for, it just took a heel like Bundy to take a shortcut like that.
I feel like greg still keeps up with the current product, haven't seen him on wwe television in a long while but apparently he was supposed to of been in the legends match at wm 25

When Jesse and Monsoon were calling matches and Jesse would take the side of the heel, the line I always remembered was right after Monsoon was wondering if Jesse was watching the same match as he was, Jesse would reply, "I call it like I see it, Monsoon."
In other words Mr Valentine is saying that Ghram & Ventura could have been the Hogan role & had Ghram Mania or Ventura Mania which they could have. There was talk about Austin Idol Mania Tommy Rich Mania

Jesse Ventura's convoluted attempts to always justify the heel's position were often hysterically funny. Incredibly entertaining.
Ya it was crazy to hear Greg call him a straight shooter LOL!
