iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max Teardowns - Worth The Upgrade?

  • Our teardown earlier this week revealed some very interesting things inside the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. But today we’re taking a closer look at Apple’s premium line of phones, the iPhone Pro and Pro Max. The larger Pro Max’s have always been Apple’s flagship devices while the smaller Pro’s have played second fiddle by inheriting most, but not all, of the Pro Max’s features.
    This year that changed, with the smaller iPhone 16 Pro receiving the same hardware as the 16 Pro Max-just with a smaller battery and screen.

    Because the mAh size isn't shared in the video for the iPhone 16 Pro, I took it upon myself:
    Through some little table math the iPhone 16 Pro has a:
    3.83 V 13.9412 Wh 3640mAh Battery
    (The Math: 3640mAh x 3.83 V / 1000 = 13.9412 Wh)
    (The Math (the other way):

    I guess they are testing three different battery design.
    One with voltage to remove rhe battery, another as original apple design and then another metal shell.
    Maybe they won't go with metal shell and voltage run through to release the adhesive together.
    Either metal shell or easy to remove the battery. With metal shell it's more safe, dense and can be removed via anything lol. So maybe this one is the best solution out of three.

They probably will standardize on next Iphone, after they decide which one is the easiest for both their technicians, and Apple's cost for producing an Iphone.

    2:55 that hollowed out section is part of the front speaker's acoustic port, nothing to do with any antennas. Apple moved to this speaker design on all iPhones that have the Dynamic Island.
    Besides, on the exterior of that hollowed out section is still titanium - unless there's a glass/plastic window there, no way will there be any "punching through" of RF signals. The mmWave antenna is actually the thing to the right of the rear camera system with the array of 5 vertically aligned circles. It faces the back glass where the UWB antennas used to be.

    • @Jordan-ru8yf
      @Jordan-ru8yf День тому

      The casing shouldn’t really matter. It’s not for heat dissipation, and battery degradation at different temps is an uncertain topic anyway. Arguably the max has greater starting capacity so you will notice degradation less. You will also run it to near zero less often as a result, so it will probably win out a bit. But the lifespan differences are probably minor and not something to choose between them for. The only real differences of concern is the longer starting battery of the max and the larger (to large now for most people in my opinion) size of the max.

And is it less good battery in the iPhone 16 pro max you thought? Because she is like a classic battery with flexible body. • @Jordan-ru8yf
      @Jordan-ru8yf День тому

      It’s safe. The metal casing probably just balances the real world risk. The larger capacity of the pro max battery means it probably would be ran to zero as frequently, and so will fail and degrade far less often. P.S. the metal casing isn’t for heat transfer, there’s still an air gap between it and the frame. So it only to allow safer repair of the smaller, and so more failure prone, pro battery.

    • @Jordan-ru8yf
      @Jordan-ru8yf День тому +1

      Maybe. Definitely if swapping it out. But the PM also has larger starting size. As such, it may be ran down low less often for most users, which is a known cause of degradation and possible failures. So, Apple could have simple determined the increased capacity of the PM lessens the need for the metal casing safety features. In essence the metal casing may just balance the real world risk of both out for the average user.

      They are probably banking on it reaching the plastic antenna band at the top to gain signal access. But like he said most of the country can’t even use 5gmm signal.

    • @Jordan-ru8yf
      @Jordan-ru8yf День тому

      The frame is bonded aluminum and titanium. You can’t see clearly what parts are which. The titanium frame does have a gap of aluminum to allow for greater signal pass through. It’s just not observable without an expensive scanning equipment like shown in this video.

      He did. You now have some ability to reset and paid parts. Realistically, some balance is good. While Apple for sure will do every they legally can to stop repairs it is indisputable that theft of iPhones has been largely eliminated due to the efforts, which make actual people a bit safer. Without parts pairing phone theft for repair parts would be a thing immediately. Now, this doesn’t mean Apple can’t do much better at allowing third part parts pairing and make the process for actual owners to do it much simpler. But again, iOS 18 does make steps in this direction. Watch the video carefully first.

  • @peterthepanda

    • @Jordan-ru8yf
      @Jordan-ru8yf День тому +1

      Software lock does make people safer. It has essentially killed iPhone theft.
      Now, that doesn’t mean Apple couldn’t make an easier system with better access to verified OEM and third party replacement parts. But some level of parts pairing is good, so long as legal oversight ensure companies don’t abuse it. I would rather some non properly recycled phones have a lock on their parts than have a substantial increase in phone theft muggings since real people get hurt in those situation. Also, iOS 18 has improved the process. Again, more could and should be done but a saying it should get a zero is naive both in terms of actual repairability and other impacts of the pairing feature.

    16 pro signal strength is 100% negatively impacted from the removal of that antenna. I work in the middle of nowhere, however we do have towers that are spread far on this one certain road as you drive down it. Galaxy S21U, S23, iPhone 13, 14, 15 pro's no issues over the years, struggled in some spots but has been great. 5G and LTE active currently, 16 pro barely functioned on the network the entire duration of the drive today almost. One spot it was really good. Not very impressed.

      As others have stated mmWave isn't used for remote locations which is the only use case for the antenna we're talking about. It's higher speed but relatively short range so only makes sense for high density locations like sports arenas, airports, etc. Makes zero sense to put mmWave "in the middle of nowhere."
