    Great videos. Don’t worry about the length of time.
    I’ve been using Debian 12 Gnome lately, but your Openbox, Fluxbox and XFCE videos really have me wanting to go back to one of those.
    Great work.

    I look forward to the day when xfce supports Wayland. It will be the best DE out of them all. For now I don't to use anything even remotely exploitable

      I think you're doing what a lot of us running Linux do and that's overthink the situation. Will the exploits in XFCE effect your day to day use of your PC?

    Neat! I just uploaded the Xfce and Openbox editions of a family-friendly web-filtered distro I created called F3OS (The Free Family-Friendly Operating System), and I too, like you, love to tinker.
    I set Xfce up with just one panel on the bottom in an attempt to make Windows refugees feel at home. I also set up keyboard shortcuts that use the Windows key to match what Windows uses (Win-D to minimize all open windows, Win-E to open Thunar -- and also, Shift-Win-E to open Thunar with sudo privileges), plus I set up quite a few others to open various pre-installed applications. In the terminal, while regular users have a green and blue prompt, I set root to have a red and yellow prompt. All of these modifications are also present in the Openbox edition, which I refer to as F3OS Junior.

    For me and my use this is the best DE there is. I also like more retro kinda look so mine looks Monochrome Black with some sureal black wallpaper.
    This was very clean neutral look with awesome iconset.
    Nicely done Guy!

    You should also try using picom instead of the default compositor. Especially the picom-jonaburg fork with blur and subtle animation makes xfce look and feel way cleaner

    I finally got around to watching this one. It's a good grounding after some of the WM videos confused me. I may learn more from playing with this than some of the window managers.

    Not bad, not bad. For my XFCE setup, I just have the Gnome 2/Mate dual-panel layout. I could have easily gone with a minimal Mate desktop install but I largely prefer the handling of XFCEs settings and workflow over that of Mate, plus I am more attached to the very first graphical desktop I've used on a Linux install.

    Hey Drew (@JustAGuyLinux) thank you for your latest video. Could you create a tutorial demonstrating how to use ncmpcpp and mopidy to play Spotify songs in the terminal on Debian? I attempted it myself, but encountered errors with the configuration.

    Great video! Is there an option to change the title bar color or border color of the active window? It is hard to distinguish when you have many windows open, mainly in dark mode.

      What you'd need to do is either look for another Xfwm theme or modify your existing theme to get that look.
      When I get around to it, I plan to alter my distro's default Xfwm and Openbox themes to where, while it will still have the basic look of what he's using in the video, the close button will be red in the active windows, while grayed out in the inactive windows (the other buttons will be black or white on the active windows, on light or dark themes, respectively).

    Favorite desktop...except for Thunar. Just built a BSPWM version from Deb Server to eliminate that file manager. Great job.

    • @ytbone9430
      @ytbone9430 10 місяців тому +1

      So you have no graphical file manager now? Or what is it you use to sort, preview and drag pictures around e.g.? Thunar is an emergency solution for me as well, but I looked at most of the other file managers, they all seem to s*ck. There seems to be no configurable file manager out there which allows custom actions and toolbars, with dual file pane and pane for previewing images or documents. Most also don't have a scripting API of some kind or flat view or decent thumbnail mode etc.. If you know one, please let me know! Thank you! o)

      @@ytbone9430I am not sure what you are looking for, but I more than likely don't need it. I use PCman and Ristretto. I can move windows and objects around just fine in BSPWM. Looks like you don't need a minimal OS . Not using XFCE sucks, yes. But I do not like being forced to use Thunar.

    Hey Drew,I always have a question, why is it that when installing debian 12 you can choose the BTRFS format for manual partitioning, and then why do you have to go into a terminal state to format it as BTRFS?

    • @JustAGuyLinux
      @JustAGuyLinux  10 місяців тому

      It is my understanding that Debian does not set up the btrfs partition automatically to use timeshift or snapper. It requires the user to go through the manual process as I demonstrated on the previous video. If you don't want to use snapshots, you don't have to take the extra steps.

    For me all these workspaces are so overrated. I normally setup 2 of them in my KDE environment just to be able to use the 2nd but I seldom use it. Maybe because I don't have so many programs open at the same time. Tiling is also something I never use, I like everything to be full screen so I can see it all.

  • @ytbone9430

    Ok, looks good, but changing the look of everything, does it really help the Linux Desktop?!.. o)
    Applications like Thunar are 20 years behind, Dolphin is not for professionals either (it's written in their documentation, not kidding). So, who is the Linux Desktop for? For the artists and designers! Doing another icon set and window theme, which also does not feature a visual difference between the active and inactive window. Thank you, that's really great to have! I already have that on Windows and Mac. I also have file open/save dialogs on Mac which are hard to use, Linux has them as well, awesome! o)
    Seriously, anybody remembering ASL file requesters on Amiga OS around 30 years ago? You can talk the look, but regarding functionality and usability they are still way ahead of time, it's sad the modern computer world does not build upon things. Its just redesigning every 10 years, losing 50% of the features.. it's a constant decrease in everything.
    I still enjoy your videos, you make it look easy while Linux is a hard place - subbed.
    Thank you and have a nice sunday! o)
