- Diane Bish plays "Nimrod" from Enigma Variations by Sir Edward Elgar, at the Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas.
Variations on an Original Theme for orchestra ("Enigma"), Op. 36, commonly referred to as the Enigma Variations, is a set of a theme and its fourteen variations written for orchestra by Edward Elgar in 1898--1899. It is Elgar's best-known large-scale composition, for both the music itself and the enigmas behind it. Elgar dedicated the piece to "my friends pictured within", each variation being an affectionate portrayal of one of his circle of close acquaintances.
Variation IX (Adagio) - "Nimrod"
Augustus J. Jaeger was employed as music editor by the London publisher Novello & Co. For a long time he was a close friend of Elgar, giving him useful advice, but also severe criticism, something Elgar greatly appreciated. Remarkably, Elgar later related on several occasions how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks. The name of the variation refers to Nimrod, an Old Testament patriarch described as "a mighty hunter before the Lord" - the name Jäger being German for hunter.
In 1904 Elgar told Dora Penny ("Dorabella") that this variation is not really a portrait, but "the story of something that happened". As she wrote later in her book; "Once, when Elgar had been very depressed and was about to give it all up and write no more music, Jaeger had visited him and encouraged him to continue composing. He referred to Ludwig van Beethoven, who had a lot of worries, but wrote more and more beautiful music. 'And that is what you must do', Jaeger said and he sang the theme of the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 ' Pathétique '. Elgar disclosed to Dora that the opening bars of "Nimrod" were made to suggest that theme. "Can't you hear it at the beginning? Only a hint, not a quotation".
This variation has become popular in its own right and is sometimes used at funerals, memorial services, and other solemn occasions. It is always played at the Cenotaph in London on Remembrance Sunday.
The great Diane Bish. The magnificent music of Edward Elgar. The universal language of music given us by the grace of God. A joy to hear this. Thank you for posting.
It wasn't master's play. Even masters make technical or interpretation errors. This performance was flawless in every aspect and the dynamics was breathtaking. My deep bow to the lady.
And I bow to king Nimrod. Without him we wouldn't have so many beautiful languages today ;-)
always satisfied with Diane Bish and her interpretation of Nimrod, always straighten up to Nimrod
I think she blew the dust out of the pipes! This is a fave of mine and Di does the best job of playing it! :)
SUPERB, THE MOST MOVING PIECE OF MUSIC IN THE UNIVERSE!!
Amazing ! Great playing Diane.
Perfect tempo and emphasis - excellent performance.
For once she didn't play it like she had a plane to catch.
Best version on UA-cam in my opinion. This piece of music is simply amazing. It would be great to have an organ like that.
I feel that the body releases the soul to the sound of nimrod
This is played on remembrance Sunday in the UK to remind us of those soldiers that fell during the two world wars.
Diane Bish is the most brilliant OrganistI have ever known I like use of crescendo starboard footwork !
Very effective use of the crescendo pedal here!
I do most certainly agree!!
Really it is quite jarring and not smoothly executed. Perhaps it was better from the audience persepctive than the mics hung in the organ chamber.
This work is now for the martyrs and fighting warriors in Ukraine. We the free people will never give in.
Maravilloso!! 👏👏👏👏👏♥️
It would be beautiful to hear this once again during the Elevation during Papal Mass in the Catholic Church.
Oh my god.
Perfect!
HOLY SMOKE.Brillant.
Just sublime
Wonderful 🌸🌸🌸
❤
Grande Organista❤
The Organist in Bath Abbey is far better
2:50: Bring on the reeds.
I think that's the mice woken up
Io
Wonderful din
Is this Diane Bish at the organ?
Yes, it is.
Wow says it all
Sounds flat and boaring. No real gusto or emotion put into this. But it's a American woman playing this masterpiece so not expecting anything exciting
Way overrated
I'm not a religious man at all, but if there is anything on earth that makes me feel closer to God, it's music such as this.
Strange thing to say if not religious.
@@duncanbryson1167 Its a figure of speech.
Ironically it’s not a religious piece although Elgar was a devout Roman Catholic.
As Jesus said "Come and see"! Trust in Him as Lord and Saviour and may God be with you!
I concur with most that this is the most beautiful rendition of Nimrod on youtube. Everything came together: instrument, musician, environment. Audio and video quality are also good. Diane's work is smooth, clean, and unaffected. Only the pure passion of the music comes through. Truly talented people make it look easy. Of course, the music is equally magnificent, passionate, and stirring. Clearly one of my favorites of all time.
Your comments are spot on, and mirror those I might have written. Like the definitive version of Come Sweet Death by Virgil Fox, Diane's version of Nimrod is equally definitive. We are fortunate to have these splendid talents represented by the UA-cam videos for reference, as we can return vicariously to enjoy them with the rest of the world. Bless you. DJ
Ms. Diane Bish was touched by the Holy Spirit to capturing the beauty, grandeur and mysteriousness of this ineffable composition. I have heard very talented young virtuosic organists, but in my humble opinion, Ms. Diane Bish and Mr. Vlademir Horowitz are still unbeatable!
I'm also touched by the spirit.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Ferrerya playing this at the National Cathedral is the epitome of how Nimrod should be played!
Aah she is truly the master of the organ . Reduced me to tears...
World famous organist Diane Bish is the pride of Bloomington, Indiana. She has a unique interpreting e talent shown through her magical registrations. Brava!
True the registration on this performance is amazing.
The first time I ever heard this piece I was a 7 year old choirboy and it was played by our church organist. There began my love of classical music
WONDERFULLLL MAGNIFICIENTTTTT😄😄😄😄😄
The atmosphere in the church must have been absolutely electric
If i am in tears at home, i would be on the ground, bawling there.
It is very difficult to get the right tempo for this piece as it must be changed for an organ such as this compared to say a massed military band.
Some organists play it too slow and it sounds laboured. Diane Bish gets it so right.
I’m astonished by the unbelievable musicianship but also the setting. A Baptist chapel like a cathedral and stunning organ to match!!! Wow! 70 and never happier than to be amazed. Elgar would be impressed
To me this will always remind me of the Queen , God bless her !
Elegant 😊❤
I feel this is one of the best versions I have ever heard. Well done Diane Bish. This has made my day.
I absolutely adore organ music Is Bach is my favourite play a little looking for sheet music to download especially nimro by Elgar
Diane Bish you are my favourite organist brilliant thank you
I agree, I can't think of a rendition that moved me more than this one. Expertly done and peerless musicality. Well done Diane!
Absolutely divine. Amazing performance.
this is probably one of the most beautiful melodies I have ever heard.
Thanks Edward!
Ah, the wonderful Diane Bish, and the amazing "Nimrod" by Elgar! Brings tears to my eyes! Thank you Diane for this amazing piece on this beautiful organ.
This is wonderful, but to stand on parade in November in London still makes me want to shed a tear. No matter were I hear this, I am transported back to that event.
Or beneath the Menin Gate in Flanders, where it is sometimes played as part of the nightly Last Post ceremony.
Very moving place at the cenotaph. We'll never forget.
Its emotional, but orchestra two bars in,,,
And I'm crying!
This is fantastical!
Just wonderful! Cheers from Australia.
Absolutely beautiful so peaceful
Now all I need to do is figure out how to fit that organ into the house :/
Yes, this is my favorite version of Diane playing this beautiful piece. There are several samples of Ms. Bish playing this version on youtube, however they are all of poor video and audio quality so I ripped then uploaded this version from the DVD that I purchased several years ago. It is still much better on DVD of course, but this is still a decent upload though.
Absolutely beautiful from England
Agree. But not ALL from England has been so amazing...
A wonderful arrangement and performance of this stirring piece.
Thank God she had an organ which she could rely upon. Plies play it yourself.
JML
This is sublime!
Incredible. That was absolutely gorgeous.
I would expand and say that this particular video represents the best job Diane Bish does in this music, period.
Fabulous! Diane Bish is one of the world’s great organists.
One of my all time favorites. Ms Bish is magnificient!
Was mir daran soooo gut gefällt harmonisch gespielte Orgelmusik, da kommen bei mir innere Gefühle der Freude und des Friedens auf. Vielen herzlichen Dank.
Picture this . . . You are hearing this Hymn as God says, Welcome Home as you slowly walk into Heaven . . .
Magnificent!
English music at its finest.
That was a lovely interpretation.
What a fabulous organ. Does it really have 64ft pipes on the pedal?
No, it does not, that is a resultant.
@@praestant8 Thought not. Understood to be betond the human ear.
@@rodsharp1493 Also the Chamades on the Organ was removed due to a Hurricane. Also the organ is now 4 manuals.
The best she played, nice and slow 😂😊❤
Beautiful❤️
Touching.
It would be nice to know something about the organ, the true star of this splendid performance.
The organ was built all pipe by Rodger's. The Chamades on this organ was removed because of Hurricane Ike, so the organ has 4 manuals now.
Stunning: moved me to tears.........
Excellent.
Just sublime
美しいです✨そこに神様や天使がいらっしゃるようです
Beautiful. Still, I love the Lutheran worship concept as seen in old churches like Bach's St. Thomas Church, Leipzig, of Word (with elevated pulpit) and Sacrament reserved for the front-most magesterial attention, music being ministerial in the back balcony.

It would appear in this case all that glitters is Gold. When music envelopes you. Ric from Oz 🙍♂️ 🇭🇲 🦘 👍 😎
I believe a better rendition is on the largest pipe orgsn in Asia. Bish was great but this guy playing the Asian organ is beyind belief.
Thank you for sharing you are a great inspiration in my music playing indeed 🎉
Try listening to this at the Royal Albert Hall. Nothing else after will do.
This musical piece undoubtedly possesses its own unique allure. However, there are a few areas that might benefit from a touch of finesse for a more harmonious delivery. For instance, it was observed that some notes veered off their designated pitch and rhythm was sometimes interrupted by omitted beats. The tempo was also somewhat disrupted, as a number of pauses or note duration were not extended to their full count.
The dynamic range of the piece presented another area for enhancement. Ideally, the composition should commence in a whisper-soft pianissimo, gradually building intensity and concluding in the same delicate manner. However, this progression was somewhat absent. Additionally, there was a missed opportunity for an impactful crescendo to a roaring triple forte near the end of the piece.
Comparisons with other renditions available online, particularly on UA-cam, reveal a range of interpretations, some of which might offer a more satisfying listening experience. However, this rendition's uniqueness should not be dismissed outright. With some thoughtful revisions and diligent practice, it has the capacity to reveal its hidden brilliance and captivate listeners.
Being totally honest, despite her brilliance, I don’t like this interpretation. The organ as well sounds as it is has a lot of “tin whistles.” I fully appreciate I’m going to be a minority voice here. Just my opinion.
🙏🏻😇🙏🏻
sensational
No word
this version is somehow even more powerful than the orchestral versions
Organ versions always are. 😁😁😁
Why is everyone rushing this piece. It is an eternal melody. It should be played like it.
FAN-f*****g-TASTIC
