    Lead singer Tony Williams recognized as one of the greatest vocalists ever. Listen to his range on their hit Only You. Classic.

      Yes but still so underrated and unappreciated. You really want to get a good sample of his range, try “Where” and “My Prayer.”

    FANTASTIC....The Platters were SUPERSTARS in the 50s.....on both white charts and black charts....it was just unheard of black artists being as popular as they were back then because white radio just refused to play black music and were just outright stealing our music.....lead singer Tony Williams is one of the greatest singers of all times.....he is a Nat King Cole type singer that could powerfully belt out songs with barely an effort.....this group has so many live performances from the 50s MUST SEE.....all you have to do is search for them on UA-cam.....you dont get any classier than this group.....great reaction

      Stealing your music, Mr. Kemp??? The guys who wrote Smoke Gets in Your Eyes were white guys (Otto Harbach & Jerome Kern). The first recording of the song was done in 1933 by a white lady (Gertrude Nissen).

    This is a classic ...........I remember this song from the movie "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" when Larenz Tate playing Frankie Lyman is mad at Vivica Fox playing his wife and he sees his ex girlfriend Zola Taylor of The Platters played by Halle Berry on television singing this song.

    The Platters are without question one of the greatest groups of all time. When you talk about underrated, this group rarely (if ever) make the all time greats list. Despite having more hits than many artists who do, are more vocally talented, and historically significant. One of the reason for that is because there were many different versions of the group. Because of internal strife, their original manager kept changing the lineup to continue recording and touring while former members would create offshoots to tour. You could quite literally run into two versions of the same group performing in the same city. It must’ve been crazy for fans. The frequent change ups earned them the branding of “The Platters: many voices, one name.” The group also suffered a blow to their reputations when the 4 male members of their most successful line up (the ones singing here) were arrested on drug and prostitution charges at the height of their popularity in the late 50’s. Radio stations stopped playing their music and they were essentially black listed for a time. Despite all their woes and changing lineup, the Tony Williams Platters from 1953-1960 should be considered among the all time greats. Check out some of their biggest and timeless hits: Only you, The great pretender, Twilight time, you’ve got the magic touch, harbor lights, and my prayer.

    They were one of the Top Groups of the 1950's who bought so much Romance to folks. This was also played in American Graffiti when Steve Bolander had a Slow Dance at a Back To School Dance. Steve was on his way to College in The East and Laurie was heartbroken because she had just started out as a Senior. Another one of their Songs "Only You" was featured on The Wonder Years.

    Here are some artists and songs from the ‘60s/‘70s you should give a listen to: Mary Wells, Two Lovers, or My Guy; The Marvelettes, When the Hunter Get Captured By the Game, or Don’t Mess With Bill; Martha and the Vandellas, Dancing In The Streets, or Jimmy Mack, just to name a few.

    For those saying that the Platters were a huge group in the 60s. You are right. I was a school girl living in a small town on the West Coast of B.C. Canada. Near Alaska.We could only hear the radio stations in Vancouver and Seattle at night, yet there was a thriving record store in town that mostly sold 45s. I could sing along with several of the Platters hits. (Still can!)
    That's how huge they were.

    Just want to add that The Platters were the top selling black group of the 50s.....the other group is The Flamingos....you already reacted to The Flamingos "I Only I Have Eyes For You"..... but if you want to hear some of the most enchanting and tight harmonizing then you have to react to more Flamingos music

    • @nkcbrazil
      @nkcbrazil 3 роки тому

      yes have to give props to The Flamingoes, and the Harptones, but the Flamingoes had such a unique sound, the harmonizing was somewhat mystical and unmatched. The obvious song and biggest was I Only Have Eyes For You, but also other great ones “Lovers Never Say Goodbye,” Mio Amore,” “Love Walked In,” “You Me And the Sea,” and so many more.

    Thanks for this, not many reactors pay attention to The Platters. Tony Williams was a world class vocalist and kept this band at the top of the list.
    You should do Elvis, in black and white tv, on the Ed Sullivan show back in 1956 doing "Love Me". He was so young and fresh then and really exuded starpower.

    Your dipping back now into the 50’s when the Platters where the king of groups with probably the greatest lead singer. They had so many great songs and big hits, most people will request “only you,” “Twilight Time,” The Great Pretender,” big they go deeper with songs like “The harbor Lights,” and “Where,” and many others.
