- Yvonne Orji is a Nigerian-born actress, writer, and comedian. She first discovered her affinity for comedy when she entered the Miss Nigeria in America pageant and needed an act for the talent portion of the night.
Since then, Yvonne created the concept for “First Gen,” a sitcom pilot based on her experiences as a young Nigerian immigrant growing up in America, and is slated to star opposite Issa Rae in the upcoming HBO comedy series “Insecure,” co-created and written by Rae and Larry Wilmore.
In this “Fresh on the Screen” interview, created by the Vilcek Foundation and presented with NPR’s Code Switch, Yvonne speaks about her path to comedy, and how she incorporates both her immigrant and American sides.
